About the Club

JDI Barbell was founded to offer serious strength athletes in New York City a place to call home. Over the last four years, it has grown into so much more.
Although we are home to some very high-level weightlifters and powerlifters, we also work with and develop beginner better than any other barbell club or strength gym in New York City.

A gym unlike any other! Whether you want to get started with strength training/powerlifting/weightlifting or you're already a pro, there's something for everyone -- except a lot of machines.

I. Love. It. Here. The owners/staff are amazing (shout out to Priscilla and Alex!), the facility and equipment are top tier, and the community/members are considerate, supportive, and welcoming. SO grateful to find a gym in NYC that feels like home!

Three stars are solely for the trainers that work here as they make this gym worthwhile.

I’ve been working out at this gym for a little while now, solely because it's in the only gym that's close by, and while there’s a lot to like, there are a few areas that could really use some attention.

First, the coaches are fantastic. They are intelligent, knowledgeable, and truly top of their game. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced lifter, they provide excellent guidance and programming. Their expertise alone makes this gym worth considering.

That said, the cleanliness could be drastically improved. The floors and equipment often feel dusty or sticky or sweaty. Equipment clearly isn't wiped down between use or as part of a daily cleaning regimen. The disinfectant wipes are frequently dry, which makes it tough to wipe things down properly, which is a little alarming in our post pandemic world. More attention to tidiness and a consistent cleaning schedule would go a long way in making workouts more pleasant.

Another surprising aspect is that dogs are allowed to roam freely in the gym. While I love pets, having them underfoot during workouts, especially when people are lifting heavy, can feel unsafe. Dogs can get underfoot or even just serve as a distraction while people are lifting heavy weights, creating a serious tripping hazard or even just shifting your focus enough that you seriously injure yourself when you are in your meditative gym mindset. A gym should be a controlled environment, not a pet playground. A designated pet area would be more appropriate.

The equipment is solid, covering all the basics and then some. There’s enough variety for a great workout, and everything is generally in good working order. Yeah, the equipment is all mismatched and kind of looks like they all came from buy nothing groups or if other gyms were closing and giving away all their equipment, but hey, it gets the job done.

Overall, this gym has potential, due to the amazing coaches. With more focus on cleanliness and safety, it could be even better.

I had to serve jury duty and needed a spot to get a sesh in near the courthouse.
This place is incredible. No frill and all frills!
An Olympic or powerlifters dream spot - Eleiko competition and bumper plates, many racks, sled, kettlebells (I needed two 24KG’s for my program and they have them)
Bathroom is clean with beautiful tiled shower and strong water pressure.
Ten stars!

This seems like a solid place to come to for your weightlifting fitness goals. I hope to join sometime in the near future. I came for a drop in class and I was very impressed. The basic barbell instructor was enthusiastic, knowledgeable and welcoming along with the other clients as well. Im glad Harlem has a location. I could tell by one visit that anyone looking to join here would be on for a treat.

May be an okay Powerlifting Gym, but i have No clue how this gym became a Hyroxgym.
Its way too small and messy. You are not able to perform Wall Balls because of the Height, Sled Push and pull is nearly not possible because of overcrowding and there were no Sandbags for Lunges.
The sled glided so Bad, that I Barely Could move it.
Im sorry for myself that I Paid 35$ for one Hour.

JDI is different. JDI makes powerlifters. JDI helps build the confidence that you don't get at a commercial gym. It's a small family, and that's beautiful. I started using the bar because of JDI. I no longer fear heavy weight; I no longer fear the barbell;
I no longer worry about not being able to lift. JDI also has a community of girls who lift and empower each other through friendship and every lift. Once a month, the Strong Gurls Club gets together and has an event which I look forward to. The best part of my experience is not only am I getting stronger, but my mental health has done a 180, and that's priceless for me. free endorphins!!!!

I have been a member for three months, and been lifting seriously for about a decade. I strongly recommend JDI Harlem.

If you're expecting a spa, JDI Harlem gives a rough initial impression, but if you want to train, it's a playground.

It has everything you need where it counts for solid strength training: fantastic programming in the app, coaching hours where you can get constructive critique on your lifts, and a community that shares a strong drive for self improvement.

For intermediate/advanced lifters, there is programming that will challenge you in the app and all the necessary equipment to execute.

For beginner lifters, there are coaches around during coaching hours to make sure you're lifting safely and give you technical critique, BUT they split their time between individual clients and the two JDI locations so if you want a specific coach you should speak with them about scheduling or consider getting a session yourself.

If you want to train strength or get into olympic lifting, JDI Harlem is your best shot in town.

I used to go to this gym a couple years ago before moving away. It is the best strength training gym I’ve gone to and unique in the level of care that the coaches/instructors provide. I felt safe learning to lift at this gym and learning how to safely lift. The coaches treat other people with kindness and empathy. I am thankful for the experience going to JDI Barbell and recommend it to anybody who lives in nyc who wants to learn how to lift or who wants to go to a different gym.

Best gym in Manhattan for Olympic weightlifting by far. Four platforms with nice bars (plus deadlift platforms, racks, benches, etc. for powerlifting and general strength training), 24/7 key fob access, very reasonable membership prices, and <5 minute walk from the subway. Also a very welcoming space for female athletes and owners are great.

JDI is the real deal. This is the go-to facility for people who are serious about training. They have a wide range of gear and well-stocked facility. Their trainers are not only experienced and knowledgeable, they have the ability to transfer their skills whether its for competitive powerlifting or learning the fundamentals. They also implement computerized personal training routines that are literally fine-tuned to the pound based on the person's experience. Where JDI really stands out for me is in the supportive, team-like, fun yet down-to-business environment that they create for anyone lucky enough to train there. This includes competition-level athletes as well as beginners and men and women of all abilities. I attribute all this to owner's personal involvement with every aspect of the operation. Keep up the good work.

If you’re looking for something different from crossfit and the avg. big box gym, this is it. I can’t speak to the facility at their new home on Park Ave, but I was a member at their LIC location for the last two years. And I can say with certainty, the coaching and the overall experience was top notch. Jesse and Alex are good people who offer down to earth coaching for Olympic weightlifting and Strength training from the beginner all the way up to competition level. I only wish they were still in my backyard. LIC’s loss is Harlem’s gain. Best of luck in the new digs!

This is the best strength gym in NYC. If you're a powerlifter or a weightlifter this is the place to be. The members are a close-knit group of friendly, fun people. There is a whole cast of elite athletes that spend time here from powerlifters to weightlifters to kettlebell competitors to muay thai practitioners. It is no frills, but that's because it's all about focused training and performance. However, the environment is welcoming of all levels, especially new beginners.

After getting hurt in the Iraq war - I had been a triathlete and middle distance runner before, and a perfect PFTer in the Marines - I found myself unable to workout due to my injuries. I tried so many things, but was just unable to keep going. Running, gyms, swimming, nothing stuck. I always felt so tired. I wasn't seeing results. And my working out was so inconsistent. But then I came across JDI. Consultation with Jesse, the owner. He listened to my history, my story, built custom programs that work around my injuries and issues. The programs always push me, but are never so hard that I'm too fatigued for the next workout. As a guy who has always pushed himself to the limit and beyond, their ability to hold me back has been a blessing. So I find that I'm able to work out for the first time since the war - that's 15 years. And that's after trying high-end gyms, personal trainers, reading books, articles, and trying to do it myself. And it makes working out easy. I just show up, do what's on my list and go home. An added bonus: there are always coaches around in the gym making sure people are doing exercises safely and correctly. Even though it doesn't look like it, this is a very high touch gym. Frankly, I've tried gyms that cost 3 times as much, and you don't get as much attention. The community also rocks. The cons: class times and coaching times can be a little loose. And they need a copywriter for their emails to make them a little clearer. But overall, it's the best fitness experience I've ever had. Highly recommended.

I'm grateful Joe introduced me to this place. I like it for several reasons:
- Jesse, who owns the place, is:
A. A pro when it comes to coaching people about lifting weights (he's competed and coached before AND achieved success)
B. Listens to your goals and tailors a workout program based on these goals if you sign up for training.
C. A great teacher. He helps you learn a skill without talking down to you.
D. Answers any question you have - including those that seem silly.
E. Generates a spreadsheet so you may track your progress over the course of the next 8 weeks.
- The place is great because:
A. The people who go are super chill.
B. If you join the weightlifters or powerlifters, you gain a bunch of supporters who cheer you on your lifting journey.
C. Has calibrated and fractional weights you may use. Helpful because strength gains come in increments
D. Multiple bars and lifting platforms available to use. At worse you work in with someone. But hey, at least you met someone new in the process.
- Note: Though i think everyone can benefit from weightlifting, this may not be the place for you if:
- You want to exercise on an infrequent basis (Though if you lift regularly, you could pay $15 to 'drop in' and lift to use the equipment.)
- You prefer to do cardio for most of your workouts
- Don't come in with an open mind about the workout you're assigned to do. (My idea of what it means to be fit has changed after coming here - in a good way)
In summary, JDI is a good investment in your health if you're willing to challenge yourself and remain committed to your goals. If you 'embrace the suck' you may just surprise yourself a couple weeks into your own program.

While there are a lot of good gyms in NYC, anyone who Olympic lifts knows that the most crucial component of training is coaching. And that is where JDI stands apart --- Jesse Irizarry is the most encouraging, informative, knowledgeable coach possible. To top it off, you'll be surrounded by a strong supportive team. If you want to learn and get better, JDI is where you should lift.
