Management isn’t the best. Machines, plates, and dumbbells are always missing. The early-morning crowd isn’t bad, but from midday to night you’ll have a tough time really locking in for your workout. The machines themselves are good, but if you progressively overload properly, you’ll find yourself maxing out the weight on almost everything. A maxed pec-deck is only impressive so many times before you start wondering if there’s a gym with heavier stacks (there is). Sure, you can solve it by buying a gym pin, but at that point it feels redundant.

Considering the cost of membership, you’re honestly better off going to the Planet Fitness five minutes away—its machines might be a little worse, but at least you can actually overload over time. Bathrooms aren’t clean, the pool looks like something out of TMNT, and the showers smell like a basketball player’s sock from the 1800s that’s never been washed.

It might work as a day-pass gym, but for any real commitment, you’re better off going somewhere else.

Joined today after did a trial here and several other gyms at different price points, but this gym honestly had everything I needed. The negatives reviews I read I didn’t see. It’s clean, and was able to workout easily. The overcrowding there is a lot of people but gym big and I only waited once. They also have the only women area the best. The jacuzzi had seen posting not working it is people were in there. Next weekend plan to take advantage of sauna and jacuzzi and yoga class happy with my choice.

Has more "scheduled for service signs" than they have working equipment. That applies to toilets, urinals, and the sauna too. After over a year of the sauna being scheduled for service, they got it working for like a week and its out of service again. Besides for needing a full time maintenance person, they could use major help with cleanliness too. Soap, toilet paper, and paper towels are not usually refilled, garbages are overflowing. Dumbells, various handles for cable machines and some other items tend to be MIA too. Get this gym together.

This LA Fitness location needs serious improvement. There aren’t enough employees keeping the facility clean and organized, and the ventilation is very poor. The equipment is packed too close together, many of the machines are broken or damaged, and overall, the gym feels dull and lifeless almost like being in a prison yard. The atmosphere is gray, uninviting, and lacks any real energy or motivation.

The pool area often doesn’t smell clean or fresh, and the crowd can sometimes be unpleasant. There’s rarely any staff around to manage rude or inappropriate member behavior, which makes the experience uncomfortable. On top of that, there aren’t enough sanitizing supplies to properly wipe down the machines and the few that are available aren’t placed conveniently.

Even the small details show neglect. The light on the front sign has never worked since the gym opened, and several bench press machines are uneven or misaligned. Many of the instructional stickers and images on the equipment are missing, making it harder for members to know how to use them properly.

The bathrooms are often dirty, and the trash cans are frequently overflowing. It’s frustrating that management is quick to call if you’re late on a payment but doesn’t put the same effort into maintaining the gym or improving the member experience.

I go often because it’s close to home, but when I compare it to my other home gym in Howard Beach, the difference is night and day. I work overnight and sometimes stop by the Howard Beach location in the morning it’s spacious, well-ventilated, and the equipment is always in great condition. Unfortunately, this Rockaway Turnpike location makes LA Fitness as a brand look bad. It feels neglected, and it’s clear the owners or management don’t care to keep it up to standard.

Still....This is by far one of the worst gyms I've ever been to, and I've worked out in literal garages and in the freezing cold, this places makes that look like luxury. Weights are all over the place (the culture here is "just make a mess"), the cable machines are dodgy I had one literally break while I was using it. I've seen them use bic pen caps as weight machine pens...safetly first right?...water bottles are all over, tisses on the gym floor and the chlorine smell of the pool is overwhelming at times. The clean place in the gym is the womens bathroom which is ironic to say the least. If you need to run on a treadmill and just go home this place is awesome otherwise go somewhere else. I feel sorry for the staff because management really just threw them to the wolves with no direction and it shows.

Sauna been out of commission for over 2 years now.

There are no paper towels in the workout area, which makes sense…. But when you go to the restroom to wash up…. THERES NO SOAP OR PAPER TOWELS. How are you a functional gym while missing the basic essentials.

The personnel at this gym is very Karen/Ken to hue men. On several occasions they have overreacted . My son this morning went to the jacuzzi and was told it was closed meanwhile another person walked straight in no questions asked.

My son asked what about that guy and was told he’ll get to him which he never did. Thankfully I’ve raised my boys to avoid issues and go high when they hit low.

I’ve been a long time member and may decide to take my money elsewhere. This place is always dirty and the bathroom smells disgusting. Leaks everywhere when it rains. Lack of good equipment like Garden City. I will be calling management tomorrow.

When they sell you a membership, they fail to mention that key amenities — like the sauna — are completely out of service, and the pool is in a shocking state: green, filthy, and clearly neglected for months. This isn’t just unpleasant, it’s a clear health and safety concern.

When I asked when the pool would be cleaned, the only response was, “Sorry, we don’t know. You can call 311 to complain about it.” That level of indifference says a lot about how this location is managed.

This LA Fitness has had a broken Sauna for over two years. It’s a signature club and you have to pay extra to be a member here, yet they’re terribly run down. After visiting this location for about a year now it’s been Something I have to put up with because it’s the closest to my house. I tried to speak with the staff, but they are very unprofessional and they lie.
The location is never equipped with Basic essentials to clean up after a work out , such as paper towels in the men’s room or even soap , there are about 9 sinks and none of them had soap. When I tried to alert the staff member she starting laughing and pointed at a member and stated “he was the manager go talk to him”. I am currently looking at other gyms

*EDITED* This place is the epitome of mixed bag. There are tons of quality machines, nothing is broken, it's never overcrowded and priced reasonable. However, this place is absolutely filthy. The bathroom garbages as well as the cans on the floor overflow, constantly. Not only are the people that go here disrespectful towards each other by being so filthy, (wipes all over the floor, i've never seen anyone re-rack their weights) there doesn't ever seem to be a porter or cleaner on duty, and if they're on duty they're on their phones. Weight plates, dumbbells and barbells are scattered all over the floor at ANY time of day, guys in here blasting speakers. Not even sure if this place has a manager to even speak to.

*edit* 12/1/24 machines are now constantly broken, place is getting FILTHIER, the sauna hasn't seen a working day in over a year, at least twice a week they're late to open. They're late about an hour already today... to top it off, corporate doesn't give a shit about this location and it shows.

*edit* 2/10/25 i didn't do this the last 3 times it was late to open and I should have but I will continue it now. It's now 5:30 unopened. I really don't think corporate cares about this location. This is absurd.

If I had to join based on these comments I probably wouldn’t have, I’m happy I tried it for myself. But from the photos I’m seeing, I see that the men’s locker room has trouble remaining clean, possibly due to main character syndrome and lack of home training. That’s something you’ll certainly encounter not only here but everywhere. In any case, the price you pay for access to any club and classes that you want is a win in my opinion. This location isn’t “filthy”, in fact there’s always staff sweeping and mopping, the women’s locker room is immaculate. It’s a fitness facility that gets the job done, there may be a wait for some popular machines depending on what time you go, you might have to look for a specific weight every now and then…overall, there’s not much that can get in the way of me exercising. My only suggestion is that they install more wipes stations, other than that, I just bring my own 🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️Thank you to the staff at this gym for the work they do!

Did a free 3 day trial Sauna on the woman’s side has been broken for OVER A YEAR according to members! I asked today when will it be fixed it has been a year and the response is I’m not sure I haven’t gotten an update I said I mean it’s been a year clearly there’s no desire to fix it! Update: After emailing them multiple times without a response (it’s concerning that LA Fitness will respond to negative reviews but not to emails!), I finally reached them by phone. However, they still refused to refund my monthly membership payment, claiming that “I agreed to their policies when I signed up.” I feel completely manipulated!

Horrible service! I had to dispute my credit card to cancel my membership. They did not allow me to cancel my membership online or over the phone (though I signed up over the phone!). I told them that I'm out of the country and cannot physically come in, but they did not care. I will never be a member again.

I was in the middle of my set and was stopped because there was a session about to begin in ten minutes. I asked if I could just finish my set that they rudely interrupted and given attitude

Absolutely garbage. I got a membership through online and now that i wanna cancel it they need me there in person. If i can give a 0 star rating i would have. Horrible gym with broken equipment and unsanitary. Spoke to the manager and he started ignoring me when i asked questions.

This gym has wholly the worst, most abysmal, dishonest customer service that I’ve ever experienced. I’ve been trying to cancel a service with them for over a month. When I signed up, I was told that it would be simple and easy to cancel this service for any reason. I was not shown the contract that I was signing, I was just told to initial in places, since employees were “explaining” it to me. I asked many questions about how to cancel for various reasons. They said it’s easy to cancel and/or get refunded if I needed to. But this was all verbal signing over the employees computer. BIG MISTAKE!!! It’s basically impossible to get in touch with anyone (can’t get to the appropriate person in the gym at the right time, and can’t ever speak to someone at corporate). But in the rare occasion that I can actually get through to someone, I’ve been thoroughly dismissed. Everyone who works at corporate will lie to you. They will just try to scam you for money. PLEASE go to another gym and avoid la fitness as a whole if you can!!

For almost 5 months the sauna has not been working, the showers are not cleaned enough and the restroom area is always disgusting, the handicap restroom is treated even worst. Management either doesn't care or it's none existing.

Update: 8/9/24
The sauna has been out of order for over a year at this location in the men's locker room. This location lacks many things and even the common facilities are often not available. I'm moving further away from this location and couldn't be happier because this is by far 1 of the worst experiences I've had.

The only good part is they give you a 3 day gym pass to try their gym out. But for a gym charging $35 a month (for single location) or $39.99 a month for all locations. You’d expect it to have some decent amenities other than just a pool. This LA fitness location during my 3 days there was a unique experience to say the least. They have some decent equipment. The staff for the most part is friendly. But it also seems as if nobody that goes to the gym knows how to re-rack their weights, dumbbells and plates alike. They just don’t have 35lb plates either which is mind boggling because they have literally every other plate variety even down to 2.5lb. When I asked the staff they mentioned “oh yeah when they opened this location they just didn’t purchase any 35lb plates” which to me is ludicrous but whatever. Also I’m attaching some photos of the lockers in the men’s locker room. All 3 days I kept my bag on me as from what I saw I didn’t want to even lock my stuff up in there as it looked like countless lockers were physically damaged and you could see indents into the metal areas like someone was trying to break in and was successful. Although it’s just 3 photos I took I wish I took more. I’ll leave this off with, for a company with over a Billion dollar valuation this is disgusting quality for a gym, plus the one time fee is expensive and you on top have an annual fee. I didnt even want to sign up so I never asked to see the sign up contract to see what else could potentially be there for members who wish to cancel etc but yeah. Maybe other locations are nicer, I just know I found a better gym for myself and it’s not LA Fitness

If i can give a 0 star rating i would have. this gym is disgusting and very unsanitary. they never clean the bathrooms, floors, lockers, or any equipments. There is never any paper towels or wipes to clean the hands or machines. They are so bad in their service and very cheap in maintenance. Half the machines are broken and take weeks to months to be fixed. I gave them so many trials to see if they will get better but no luck there, so it has been month after month and the same result which is extremely disappointing. I will never come to this gym again and this location ruins the LA-Fitness reputation and name. This is a friendly advice please do not go here, there is so much better places elsewhere.

I came in in April to cancel my membership (they make you come in, unfortunately), and I just realized now beginning of July that I’m still being charged. I called them and they told me that there were no managers there at the time and many discrepancies happened and many papers of cancellation have just been misplaced. They told me they will cancel it now, but they can’t promise a refund for the past two months and there’s no one else I can contact. dont trust them!

I’m absolutely hate this gym. It feels like a nightclub. You walk in and everyone is playing there music on a speaker so loud you can barely hear your music in your headphones. Why should i have to hear your music when I’m working out. Waste of money you better off at planet fitness

in April 2023 i was in there 3 times at nite, and then again at nite on April 9th, 2024, and the entire interior still looks brand new & very kleen !!!! To the west of the front counter is the section where the personal training is scheduled, and the 4 managers are outstanding, especially Miss Giselle !!! 5 ***** to this location !!!!

Dirtiest gym I've ever been to. Absolutely disgusting. Machines are always broken. Dumbbells are scattered everywhere! Hardly ever see staff cleaning. Wet wipe stations always empty. Soap dispensers in restroom empty. Paper towel dispensers empty. Who is managing this place? They have 2-4 staff members sitting at the front desk doing nothing while the place is totally trashed.

Parking is horrific on a good day. Meanwhile the locker room and bathroom areas are absolutely disgusting. I went in the other day at 8am on a Saturday when they open at 7am and paper towels were all over the floor and the garbage was overflowing. I would think that the night crew from the previous shift would make sure that everything was up to cleanliness standards set by the local Board of Health or staff would clean up prior to opening. However this is the normal standard of operating procedure, as I have witnessed this occurrence on numerous occasions. As a result I have canceled my membership.

Unfortunately all of these horrible reviews are all true. you pay $50 month and half the machines, pool, sauna, are always out of order and the place is filthy. save your time and money and go elsewhere. its sad management is losing so money paid customers, and still doesnt recognize the issue or attempt to resolve it. How can a gym not have hot water for 2 weeks? terrible service.
