Update: I cancelled my membership because a good 60% of the equipment is broken. With only 1 working stair climber and people hogging it up, I hadn’t been able to use it in about a month.
There was a large poo nugget in the sauna and I have no idea how long that was there. Imagine the smell. That’s not acceptable.
This place used to be good but rn there are only 2 working stair climbers and it’s been this way for months. Also too many ppl feel comfortable being completely naked in the locker room doing nothing (not showering or using the sauna just sitting there naked for hours). The fountain is broken also. The staff is nice tho

The past 2 YEARS the pool’s temperature has been from 67 - 74 degrees. This is way too cold and way below Olympic standards. I’ve been driving about 20 minutes each morning to the Forest Avenue location. I am a few block away from this location. I will no longer be silent as I know other members have been complaining, but to no avail. LA Fitness when will you finally correct this issue?!

It's good bc they have a lot of room and equipment. It's bad bc the staff NEVER reracks the weights. They say they do, but I've been here at all hours and I know they don't. Also the locker room is filthy, I have never seen the sauna or steam rooms working, the pool water is cloudy, and the free weight area literally has a broken floor they aren't fixing. I'm wondering, when it finally collapses, will they fix it then? I've been told corporate doesn't care about anything unless it affects memberships. It's the picture of a run down place. I’ve been a member at LA Fitness for a while, and I’m really disappointed with the pool conditions lately. The water is always freezing cold — it’s almost impossible to swim or enjoy a workout comfortably. Several members have complained, but nothing seems to change. For a gym that charges premium prices, you’d expect better maintenance and attention to member comfort. I hope management takes this seriously and fixes the pool temperature soon.

I wanted to use the swimming pool, but the water in their pool is very cold and has never been improved. I'm really disappointed. The pool cleaning is also not up to standard. It's so disappointing. It's not worth spending several hundred dollars a year here for me.

I don’t want to sound overly critical, but I feel it’s important to share my honest experience. I’ve been an LA Fitness member for over two years, and unfortunately, the overall quality of the facility and staff experience has steadily declined.
Many of the employees seem disengaged, often on their phones, and are unable to answer basic questions about the gym or its amenities. Equipment maintenance is another ongoing issue — machines remain out of service for months, and repairs seem to happen only around membership promotion periods (like New Year’s).
Additionally, the hot water system is frequently not working, and the sauna has been out of service the entire time I’ve been a member. The steam room only functions sporadically — usually for a few days before the same sensor issue arises again.
For the cost of membership and the reputation LA Fitness promotes, I would expect the equipment and facilities to be properly maintained. It’s time the gym either upgrades its equipment and amenities or adjusts pricing to reflect the current level of service and maintenance.

Broken equipment stays broken too long. For example, the sauna was out of service for well over a YEAR.
The pool water is too cold — and has been for about 10 months now despite frequent complaints. The lifeguards know about it, but are powerless to do anything.
Front desk folks are cheerful enough, but management aren’t reachable — and do not address complaints.

it's three years now and the sauna still not working. They say that they're fixing it but no one's ever fixing it. The pool is always cold. The Jacuzzi never works and the steam room is always hit a mess if it's on. and they want to charge me an annual yearly fee of $61 besides the monthly fee of $62 a month for the upkeep of the gym but what upkeep are they doing to the gym nothing

I came by to this branch to try their pool because someone told me their pool is not crowded. It is so cold, now I know why nobody uses their pool. I changed my mind and try sauna, unfortanately it does not work. Had my hopes high but ended up disappointed.

Dylan is absolutely fantastic! Every time I come into the gym, he’s professional, friendly, and goes above and beyond to make sure members feel welcome. He’s extremely knowledgeable about fitness and always willing to answer questions or give helpful tips. You can tell he genuinely cares about people reaching their goals. I’ve been going to this gym for several years, and it keeps getting worse. I pay for three memberships for my family, but I’m ready to leave. Most treadmills are broken, and many machines are out of order. For example, out of six Matrix rowing machines, only three are working. The equipment is never updated, just patched here and there. Very disappointing — I definitely wouldn’t recommend this gym to friends.

No one wipes down equipment. Dumbbells are left scattered across the floor with no order or oversight. Several machines are damaged with torn padding and missing weight labels, and nothing seems to be getting repaired. The place is dirty, disorganized, and running on autopilot. It doesn’t feel like a fitness facility. It feels like a space that has been left to deteriorate without consequence. The standards here are not low. They are nonexistent.

This LA location is an embarrassment.Zero effort is put in by staff members to enforce gym etiquette. There’s literal craters in the floor by the free weight section. No one re-racks anything. You have to play hunters and gathers just to find 2 of the same weights. Attachments for the cable machines are non-existent. Machines will be broken for weeks at a time. The sauna hasn’t been open since I first signed up almost 2 years ago. Plant Fitness keeps there gym in better condition and they charge 10$ a month.

The manager Nathaniel I believe his name is, the dark skinned man with dreadlocks often makes cunning and distasteful remarks to guests. Most recently, as I was getting in his tone was mocking and fake but doing it on purpose. He was purposefully making guests feel unwelcome for coming to work out. He mocks people as if he owns the gym. Get another job instead of annoying the gym members.

The gym is really spacious and has lots of machines. The class variety is good and so are most of the instructors. The personal trainers are wonderful! However, various amenities are broken and not looking like they’ll be fixed (sauna, pool). There is a shortage of weights and they’re never cleaned up or put back in the right place. The worst part is the cleaning staff doesn’t do their job at all. There’s always nasty hairballs in the sinks, dust that’s been accumulating for weeks if not months in the room where classes take place. The paper towels in the women’s locker room run out at least once a month. This would be a great gym if the manager actually cared about making it functional and making sure the staff keeps it clean and not as gross as it currently is.

I usually don’t leave reviews, but I feel it’s important to share this. Yesterday, I had yet another experience that left me feeling genuinely disheartened.
The manager at the front desk of the LA Fitness on Hylan Boulevard in Staten Island is permanently boring, consistently unengaged and uninterested when interacting with members. He’s not rude — just completely indifferent — which, over time, feels just as unwelcoming.
It’s disappointing when the person representing the gym creates such a flat, disengaged atmosphere. I hope LA Fitness takes this seriously, because good energy and basic professionalism should be part of the member experience.
I hope LA Fitness takes a closer look at how this reflects on their brand, especially when so many other gyms value customer service.

I went into the club to put my membership on hold, and the front desk person did, but let me know that I still have access for another 2 weeks, then I will be charged the $10 fee. This made total sense, but the next day I was charged the full monthly fee. Called and spoke to the operations manager Nathaniel and he said that it was incorrect, and that I should be charged the full amount for the month and then another $10. I told him that was not what I was told, nor did you send an email for this. He just laughed and questioned why I am even calling about this. I told him that his staff told me differently, so how do you expect me to react? All I wanted was clarification and an apology for the misunderstanding but he was speaking to me in a very rude tone. I've heard many members complain about this guy and I'm wondering how he can have such an ego working as an ops manager at LA Fitness... After this altercation, I am questioning whether I should continue to fitness journey here. I already had reservations when I signed up because they were so aggressive in pushing services to me, but the gym has terrible management, the sauna has never been opened.

There is a significant crack in the flooring, approximately three feet long, located directly in front of the dumbbell rack. I nearly tripped while carrying weights due to this hazard. The fact that it has been there without being fixed for over 3 months is miraculous. Literally a lawsuit just waiting to happen any minute now.
There is a blatant lack of effort, care, and professionalism throughout the gym. Don't know if its corporate's fault, careless employees fault, or local management preferring to sit on their hands. The one thing that infuriates me is that ACTUAL MAINTENANCE/UPKEEP that is expected to be done in the facility on everything from making sure all machines are working at all times/replaced if broken, to clean showers, to paper towels being readily available in the locker-rooms. That is the one thing BARE MINIMUM any member that pays dues here (myself included) expects, and time and time again, it's the same old story... no solution, and a blanket response providing no timeline/blaming corporate/procrastinating. So tired of this man.

Not very clean. The biggest reason for just three stars though is the music. Thank God for headphones but the few minutes I don't have them in when changing is excruciating listening to the music on the speakers. I joined LA fitness New Dorp March 1, the first thing that I noticed was a hole in the rubber mats by the flat bench, dust and dirt that surrounds the flat benches. I've been here for about 6 weeks now and the floors haven't been cleaned once it's disgusting, the dumbbell weight rack has an inch of dust on it, all around the base of the flat benches is dirt and filth and when anyone walks by or drops the weight I'm breathing in dust and having an asthma attack. I have video of all of this. It doesn't matter what time I go it's crowded and I'm waiting for machines. The sauna hasn't worked one day since I joined and the hot tub has filthy crud in it and is only 97 degrees it feels like a lukewarm bath and my bathing suit I hung to dry after I use it the next morning smelled like I swam in a cesspool. I tried to upload the videos but Google says they're too large and I take too much time. Beware of false reviews it looks like any review with a management replied and thanked them it's just a phony review I can't see how anyone can do a review and not mention how filthy this place is the urinals stink this filth and poop and urine on the walls and the floors are just cruded up and filthy like they would never cleaned. And they're charging me a maintenance fee every year that they already charged me for unbelievable. The manager of this club should be fired.

AC is not working since summer and looks like there is no effort to fix!!! Nobody knows what is the status of repair AC. Weight is all over places and never enough. Just Reactivated my membership to this location two days ago, and I already regret it the first day I came back. Worked out first thing in the morning no soap bathrooms are disgusting. No paper towel… Went back in the evening for another workout still, nothing was cleaned or refilled… Came back today (next afternoon at 11am) Bathroom is in the same exact condition and then almost broke my ankle in a 3 foot wide crater in the floor that’s about 3” deep they leave wide open for people to trip in. Three times I’ve already mentioned that there’s no soap in the bathroom and each employee gave me the excuse
“We’re supposed to be getting soap from another gym.”
I’m sorry, but that’s not acceptable. People need to be able to be sanitary and wash their hands after going to the bathroom. There’s no excuse for that. They should be going out to a local store to stock the gym bathroom with soap while they are waiting for a shipment. Very unsatisfied. You tell the kids at the counter and they’re a bunch of 20-year-olds that don’t care about anything. Go elsewhere!

The sauna is more often closed for whatever new reasons rather than open. The staff is eager to sell their services, but don’t want to put much effort in creating a clean and healthy environment, or to fix the treadmills. My favorite treadmills are not working. They have more problems, rather than a conducive operation of all the equipment and gear, the staff is hot helpful, if the need arises; it’s been like that for months. I wish the gym operates better than that because the location is convenient.

I had a disappointing experience at this LA Fitness due to a trainer’s unprofessional and aggressive behavior. While using the Smith machine, I was unfairly singled out and publicly reprimanded for weights that another member had left behind. Instead of addressing the real issue respectfully, the trainer humiliated me and even threatened to cancel my membership. This kind of treatment is completely unacceptable, and I hope management takes action to ensure a more respectful environment for members.

If you are paying extra for the amenities don’t, the sauna for women has only worked twice in the 5 months I’ve been here, it’s usually overcrowded the bathrooms are always dirty and you get no more “advanced machines” then a planet fitness. Here you get fake turf with tires and an unassisted bar. At that point you’re better paying less at pf or paying more to go to an actual gym. If your are going to use la maybe just avoid this location.

This gym is disgusting and I’m 100% certain I got the flu from the disgusting people who go here. I’ve seen people here sneeze into their hands then touch equipment, drip sweat all over a machine and not clean it off, I’ve never seen anyone re rack a weight. This place is always a mess and visibly DIRTY. As soon as you walk into this gym you’re hit with a thick hot smelly air, like the air quality actually changes when you step inside…machines are always broken. The staff is never regulating anything or anyone or cleaning or wiping anything down ever. This place needs a complete miracle and everyone who goes here especially the gross men / young men need a lesson on etiquette. I am afraid to go back here because of how gross it is especially after being infected with the flu after being here. I will be canceling my membership soon. If you were looking to start at the gym and you don’t want to be surrounded by annoying gross people and filth, skip this one, run far away from this gym.

This is a great gym! If you really want to do something for yourself and feel better you can choose something for yourself here. Absolutely friendly and nice people working here. My son (Arthur G.)started not that long ago and we feel really good about our choice. Big kudos to Aaron who is the friendliest person on earth and he really listens when you talk to him . I honestly love this gym I come really early ,Roy is really nice in the front desk , I’ve went to crunch and retro fitness and this gym really is better then both . Maintenance is always cleaning in the morning when I’m there . Personal trainers have their own space and don’t bother you. Gym has a lot of space so if you’re using free weights you’ll always find a spot. Womens locker room is nice and clean . No complaints

Come here as a guest to a friend once a week on Saturday mornings and find that it’s comfortably populated and not over-crowded. Can’t speak for other times though. This gym has a good selection of weights and machines though I do find that members tend to move free weights and machines attachments around to the point that it can be difficult to find what you’re looking for.
My main “could be better” is the sauna, bathroom, and showers. It feels like The sauna breaks once every 2-3 months and becomes out of commission for a few weeks. To their credit, once it’s fixed it works great. there are two sauna rooms and only one has worked for the entirety of the time I’ve been going (fyi for anyone considering joining for the saunas). The bathroom could be cleaned a little better but the showers could really use more attention. There’s a stale smell and I often find clumps of hair. There’s also one stall that had a lot of bugs flying around in it. Other than that, good gym!

As a member of La Fitness and a frequent shopper at ShopRite, I have experienced recurring harassment and verbal worst in LA Fitness under below parking lot, including an incident where a man aggressively told me to "get out here" and used profanity and insults; furthermore, on a separate occasion. Do security camera check footages or to take immediate action, including apprehending the individual responsible. Furthermore, I question whether the 2009-2011 Volkswagen Routan was authorized to be present in the parking lot, particularly given its suspicious behavior, which included multiple loops, a distinct and irritating engine noise, and potential solicitation for cash or car repairs, all executed in a seemingly surreptitious manner. Meh. Big and spacious but poorly maintained. Dismissive older management makes you feel unwanted and like a burden for asking questions. They have both dry and wet sauna and both are not operational. When I called to ask for an update the call take told me they were out of service all over the country, and who knows when they could be fixed. So I went to the Richmond location where it's busy, sure, but sauna works fine and facility is kept much cleaner. On a thread though, because of all this I actually miss going to crunch and might re- sign with them soon

Edit-i see people complaining about reracked weights…which is no problem to me, neither is the sauna, this gym has more then one set of weights, more than 5 benches for chest and plenty other machines and equipment for more than a decent workout 🏋️♀️ 💪🏻 take a guest pass and judge it for yourself, doubt you will be disappointed 😄

The gym has plenty of equipment and a good environment, apart from the constant unavailability of things like the sauna and pool, and machines being broken for too long a little too often. However, my main issue is with an employee who always seems to give a disinterested or bothered attitude whenever I need to ask something. I’m writing this mainly because on monday, I asked if I could bring a guest with me, knowing the requirements involve someone being 18, but not sure if it would need to be me or the guest. I asked, and instead of simply answering, “the guest has to be 18, sorry”, he replied with an annoyed tone “is the guest 18” “no” “does she have a parent or guardian” “no” “then she can’t come with you.” there have been multiple other interactions like this, always with the same tone

I recently visited LA Fitness to inquire about freezing my membership, as I wasn’t planning to use the gym for 2 weeks. I had assumed that “freezing” would simply pause my membership temporarily for whatever period of time (days and weeks) but I was shocked to learn that it required a full-month commitment. When I asked for clarification at the front desk, the manager—who sports braids and wears glasses—handled the situation in the rudest manner imaginable.
He explained and rolled his eyes and when I asked for clarification he reluctantly passed my question on to another employee, all while exuding an air of disinterest that made it seem like he’d rather be anywhere else but there. His attitude not only left me feeling frustrated but also deeply disappointed, as I was treated with blatant disregard despite being a paying member.
This experience highlights a significant lack of respect and proper customer service at LA Fitness. As a member who is paying for the privilege of using the facility, I expected courteous and helpful service, not dismissive behavior from someone in a managerial role. If this is the standard of treatment at LA Fitness, it’s a clear indication that they don’t value their members at all.

This gym has so much potential, but unfortunately, poor management has run this place to the ground. There’s no staff cleaning or re-racking weights ever, yet there are four employees sitting in the center of the gym playing games on their computers. The sauna has been out of order for two years, and the jacuzzi is ice cold and completely unusable.
On the other hand, the Arthur Kill location is a amazing it’s clean, the sauna and jacuzzi are fully functional, and they even provide a hair dryer in the locker room. If only the management from that location could be brought here, this gym could be amazing.

Went this morning and bought a water at the vending machine for it to get stuck. Went to tell the older associate with white hair and glasses at the front desk, but he was busy playing a game on his phone. When I finally got his attention, he told me it wasn't his problem with an attitude and then went back to the game. I left to go workout but not ten minutes later, the vending machine vendor comes in to stock the machine. The associate couldn't have just told me this? After my hour workout was done, I passed by him and his head was still down in the game.

He didn't try to ask me why I was canceling instead giving me the I don't care if you cancel and get out

It's too terrible! If you want to cancel the membership, you need to go to their office,and when you get to the office, they always say the supervisor is not here, and they are not sure when the supervisor will be available. They have all the information, they just charge you at anytime. If you really want to get the membership, make sure you pay in cash.

1 star. The overcrowding at peak hours makes it nearly impossible to access essential equipment, with wait times often exceeding 20-30 minutes for basic machines. The facility's maintenance is a serious concern - the locker rooms and shower areas have a persistent sewage-like odor that makes them unusable. Despite bringing these sanitation issues to management's attention, there has been no improvement. While the location and equipment selection could be great assets, the overcapacity issues and hygiene problems make it impossible to recommend this gym.

it seems the owner owner thanks for positive reviews (ironic) but heres a non positive that will probably go unnoticed and with many of the issues not fixed. for starters as many as you have already seen, the sauna has been broken on and off for nearly a year. The machines are hit or miss, sometimes work sometimes dont. Ive been a member for a while now and havent gone frequently due to the issues. there are other gyms for the price of this, sadly I don’t think management cares enough if folks keep coming. Go elsewhere

Dry sauna is not working. I was told by the front desk that it was LA fitness policy to shut them down permanently. I then asked if other locations have the dry sauna open, and the response was yes.
If management neglects to fix the sauna, then say so. Don't lie to my face about it.
