I did my research to find the best place to train and this is it! I commute here from Hoboken on my days off to train with Jay. I have worked out in gyms my whole life and no one has shown me all the little "tweeks" and exercises Jay has that are starting to make all the difference. I highly recommend this gym and specifically Jay as a personal trainer!

One of the greatest things in my life is finding Maik’s gym and working with my personal trainer, Greg. As someone who had already considered himself relatively fit, ate healthy, stayed active, I was really just looking for a consistent routine to get in a bit better shape. For years, I found myself stuck in the same cycle, doing the same exercises, making some progress, then getting injured and starting over again. It was so depressing as its a 0-100 mindset, and I finally came to the realization that I didn’t truly know how to train properly and need some help lol.
I decided to train with Maik after following countless Instagram influencers and realizing I wanted an in person experience and have that insurance where someone is watching what I am doing as I am injury prone. As a former Olympian and bodybuilder, my thought process was that Maik could be a great fit where I can learn from his past skill sets. The experience has been awesome so far. Maik created a strategic, personalized roadmap for my fitness goals, with workouts that are diverse and challenging. The gym is clean, and has great vibes.
Even though I travel all the way from Long Island, at 42 I’m at a point where I am now making my health a priority and investing in myself. It is a financial and personal commitment, but its a fun process when you start feeling results. Maik’s coaching has made me physically stronger but also helped me mentally, bringing clarity and confidence back into my routine.
For me, the true value is being able to show up, train hard, trust the process, and have mental health without having to overthink and always come up with a different work out routine.

Not only is he incredibly knowledgeable about fitness, form, and nutrition, but his energy and attitude make every session something I actually look forward to. I have been working with John Michael (JM) for 6 months and I’m so glad that we work together so well. I have had many trainers over the years, but this is the first time I feel like my trainer is truly in it with me. Not to mention his story is inspiring and his positive attitude is infectious.
I don’t have super specific goals - just that I want to gain muscle and lose fat - and that’s precisely what I’ve been doing. (The scale is down 20lbs so far.) I’m sure I will get more specific with my goals as I get closer to where I want to be, but JM doesn’t pressure me to define my goals beyond what they are currently.
Since I’ve been at this for so long, I am curious and ask a lot of questions - this may annoy other trainers, but JM seems to actually get excited to share his knowledge. He is passionate, which I wholeheartedly appreciate.
I have a history of eating disorders and physical ailments, and we talk about them often as nutrition and injuries are bound to get discussed in a trainer-trainee situation. We’ve also had some very difficult conversations. Because those too are bound to happen. JM doesn’t shy away from them. I already respected him so much, but seeing how he handled a particularly difficult conversation recently, I was very impressed.
We joke, we laugh, we have a great time, but we also train hard. Most days, really hard. But if I’m feeling off or I have other things going on physically, JM adjusts my training on the fly. My favorite thing though is when he pushes me beyond where I think I can go - that extra rep or two that I don’t think I can do - but he does. In those moments, I want someone who will be tough and really get into the coaching mindset and JM does. But when that’s over, it’s back to laughing and positive vibes.
We don’t agree on everything, but I feel supported in a way I’ve never had in any part of my life before. I’m beyond grateful to have JM as my trainer.
And not that I want his calendar filled, but he is awesome and I highly recommend him as a kick-ass personal trainer who can help you achieve your goals. Just don’t take my time slots. Please.
(I’d also be remiss if I didn’t mention that the gym and equipment are great. Although the bathroom leaves much to be desired - it works. Maik and the rest of the trainers are wonderful and we have a great rapport as well. Moral of the story: I enjoy coming to the gym 💜)

I've had different personal training experiences over the years and this is by far the best experience! I've done personal training through gym chains, and a personal training outfit a couple of years ago.
In the past, i would see some results at the beginning, but then it'll taper off. Ever since starting here last September, I've been steadily losing and getting leaner than I could ever imagine.
Greg, my trainer, laid out the workout and meal plan for me. He created the meal plan based off on what I was currently eating so it made the transition to watching my calories and hitting my macros easier. Greg is a phenomenal trainer and educator. He answers all my questions and the workout sessions fly by.
The best thing about my experience, besides getting the results, is that I've learned so much about strength training from Greg to the extent that I'm confident enough that after hitting my goal, I'll be able to continue my workouts on my own. At the other places, I never had the confidence to train on my own after I stopped training, then I would see my gains go away.
It goes without saying that to maximize the results from your training, definitely make sure to follow the meal plan.
Here are some other reasons this place is better than my previous experiences:
1. Free trial session - I decided to sign up for a free trial session since there wasn't much of a downside. Maik got back to me really fast and I was able to do the trial session the next day since there was an open spot.
2. Equipment - Really nice equipment that makes the exercises really easy to do and puts less stress on the body.
3. Clean Gym & Bathroom - This is the cleanest gym I've ever been to and the bathroom is clean. The bathroom is nice because it's not one of those shared bathrooms and you can change into and out of your work clothes.
4. Friendly Environment - The trainers and the clients are really friendly and warm. I feel pretty at ease working out there.
5. Knowledge - Everyone there are very knowledgeable and will explain the exercises, concepts, the reasons for doing certain things. They'll always answer any questions you'll have.
6. Location - It's ideally located in Midtown near the E, F, N, W, R and the Lexington Avenue bus lines.
7. Pricing - The pricing is higher than the other places I went to, but I feel the quality of the training justifies it. Also, it's an investment for my own health and quality of life, which should save me money in the long run. I like the fact that you can buy a number of sessions instead of being charged as you go like the other place I went to.

Everyone that works here is incredibly knowledgeable, welcoming, and helpful. And they met me where I was and at my level.
The equipment is unparalleled (see image), and it’s hard to put a price on the level of expertise. And it’s also awesome to meet ppl who are so proud of what they do. I have enjoyed my time working with Greg and Maik. All of the trainers have been super friendly and helpful. The equipment in this gym is second to none. But most importantly they spent an hour with me at no charge the first time to evaluate me and understand my past training and future goals. Greg put together a plan that has allowed my 60 yr old body to safely build muscle again. Safely being a key word as the safety gives me confidence that I can do it and the measured start has allowed me to lift much heavier weight over time! This has been one of my favorite training experiences! Definitely a hidden NYC health and wellness gem.

I usually don't write reviews for PT training. All of them tend to be average. However, Mike system of trainers and workouts stands out from the ordinary. Not only is his equipment A class but his routines truly, truly, truly hits every part of the body. If you are serious about workout and getting results this is the best place for you. To me his prices are fair most other places are much more insane for Manhattan. A class trainers and A class training.

I have been going here for 3 years now. And I must say it has only gotten better. My trainer Greg is excellent at his job. No workout is ever the same and routines are not monotonous. He is always creative with your workouts and pushes you to give your best. The cost is very reasonable for the economy we are in. I never feel like the workout period is short. I think for even first time people who rarely workout you can still get the best results as long as you are willing to put in the work. Also unlike other trainers at other establishments, Mike's team is very personable and honest. You never ever feel like you get ripped off. But for me Greg is one of the best on the team. He knows his stuff and can get you to your workout goals.

I’ve been exercising regularly for years, with little progress. But my trainer from Maik Wiedenbach helped me learn why I haven’t been getting results, and designed completely new workouts tailored to my personal goals.
I’ve had several personal trainers before, with mixed results, but I’ve had much better improvement with my trainer from Maik Wiedenbach. In addition to learning how to workout more effectively, I like having an app with videos showing how to do exercises at home, and rather than just telling me what I should and shouldn’t eat, they tell me *why* a certain nutrition plan works for my goals.

This gym is the best. I’d been a casual gym goer before this, with some decent stretches of weight training without much progress beyond newbie gains in terms of muscle growth or fat loss (and often with loss of mobility or even minor injury). After a few years of working long hours at a desk job and my body shape going in the wrong direction, I decided to try out Maik’s gym. I have seen way more results in 2 months than I had in years of trying to workout on my own. My main trainer Alex is so smart on diet and training, and he has helped design a diet and workout plan that has made me healthier, stronger, leaner, and more flexible than I’ve been in the past. I love training with Maik. He is fantastic. First time I walked in he told me my shoulders are too high which means I have a weak back so we worked on this. It helped me a lot with the neck pain I used to get. I’m getting stronger and also more muscle defind. What I like especially about training with Maik is that he has a very scientific approach to training. He’s an absolute expert when it comes to machines (which he designed himself) and also the connection of training and nutrition. I joined Maik's gym about two months ago and have been working with Alex. I have had a wonderful experience that has exceeded my expectations. Prior to working with Alex, I was weight lifting but not seeing improvements in my strength or changes in my body. I told Alex my goals and he set me up with a workout and nutrition program. Since working with him, I have been able to lose weight at a steady rate and have gotten stronger in all my lifts. JUST GO! The trainers, equipment and the gym were excellent. I've lifted for years, but I think this place is a "step above". The equipment is made by Watson based in Liverpool. It was the best I every trained with. The gym is on the 6th floor (57'th and Lex) with large glass windows around two of the main walls. Bright with great views. Was visiting NYC for 2 weeks, I found the place through Google maps. Immediately called and the owner gave me call back in one hour! I signed up for 8 visits. Trained with Maik (owner) first day; awesome introduction to the machines, new movements and the staff. Trained mainly with Shane. Super knowledgeable and great sense of humor. I really wanted to thank Shayne for teaching me many things I was missing about lifting in general (form, frequency, focus) but especially stressing the legs. Also, thanks to Alex who effortlessly handles all the scheduling for everything while accommodating flexibility. Great experience!

Maik is arguably the best personal trainer in NYC and the absolute best trainer I have ever had! He helped me with my postpartum transition back to my fittest self through weekly in-person training sessions that left me feeling like I had actually worked my muscles and not just moved weights around. The Trainers & Their Approach:
- Their emphasis on no-BS, scientifically backed, sustainable training practices and realistic goal-setting, all tailored around your specific abilities, experience, and schedule, is really refreshing
- You can't go wrong with any of the trainers here - having trained with several, I can attest that they've all been highly knowledgeable and encouraging, and know how to push me safely
- My work hours are fairly demanding and they've always been flexible regarding scheduling around that + tailoring workouts to take advantage of the limited time I have away from the desk.
The Gym:
- The gym itself is also phenomenal. It's packed with high-end, custom-made equipment that feels – and in many cases, is quite literally – brand new

When I first discovered Maik's gym about 3 months ago, I was a lap swimmer struggling with neck pain and had zero knowledge about strength training. But now I can confidently say that working out with my trainer-Jay, is always the highlight of my week.
Under Jay's tutelage, I have been gradually working on the weaker parts of my body and getting a little stronger each time we meet. I still often struggle with some of the exercises but Jay always find adjustments and adapt the workout to me. He doesn't only challenge me during our sessions but also inspire me to make changes in my life that have brought me better physical health.

TLDR: If you want the best and are serious about your training, go to Maik.
I've worked with many trainers in my time -- from boutique gyms, group training, to individual trainers. Through my search, I can say that Maik is the best trainer I have ever worked with so far and here's why:
1) Tailored Plans: There are many personal trainers out there and most of them do not have the expertise to work with specific goals. Sure - any training is better than nothing, but if your goal is to achieve a certain aesthetic and to do so efficiently, you have to go to Maik. He tailors the plan based on your goals and if you stick to it, the progress follows.
2) Knowledge: Maik has a wealth of knowledge and no nonsense attitude when it comes to building muscle and diet. I can easily say that majority of trainers learn what they need to in order to attain their license and perhaps not much after that. In my first few sessions with Maik, I have learned so much. His concepts are nuanced because they are based on a combination of science and experience. Too many trainers base their training plans purely on the anecdotal but that's not going to work for everyone. And speaking of his experience, it leads me to my third point.
3) Credentials: As a bodybuilder and Olympian swimmer, Maik has gone through all of the discipline and training in order to achieve the highest level or fitness and athleticism. Many trainers do not have these credentials. Sure, being a high level athlete doesn't automatically make you a great personal trainer but given #1 and #2, having these credentials really lends to the credibility.
Anyway If you are truly serious about your goals, you really need to visit Maik and his team. Other than the points above:
- The gym has the best equipment -- many which I've never seen and are custom made from Germany. It's also very spacious and is never too crowded
- Everyone is very friendly and it's not an intimidating environment.
To keep things fair, if I had to call out any negatives:
-This style of training is not for everyone. It's not a place to only sit and chat or complain about your exercise.
-It's a no frills place when it comes to amenities - but I would say the quality of training, expertise, and equipment greatly overcome this
- Lack of cardio equipment (specifically a treadmill (I'm biased as a runner)) - there's a rower but that's about it. In Maik's defense, it is not what he specializes in. Why cast a mediocre wide net?

If you have any fitness goals and are looking for the best team of people, and you are NOT with Maik, you are wasting ur time. Maik and his team are the best, most realistic and factual team you can ever associate yourself with. One look at my body frame and Maik told me what workouts would be most beneficial to my build and which ones would be simply wasting my time. 2 months in, my friends and family are taking major notice at da gainz!! I feel my best.
It’s also never about their success, it’s about their clients, and I feel that. It’s about learning how to execute exercises, learning the science behind it, and being able to do it yourself! Better body after baby. After my second child I couldn't get back in shape. I tried my old cardio routines but they did not work this time. I have a vague idea I need to do weights to gain muscle, but I don't know how. Luckily I found Maik. I was impressed after my first session with him. First, cleanliness. Maik Wiedenbach is, indeed, the best personal trainer in NYC. Period. I am a now retired semi-competitive long-distance runner. I traded my running shoes for dumbbells and cable weights this summer after a bad winter and spring of running injuries and the worst weight gain I have ever experienced (thanks, COVID and anti-maskers). I was very demoralized with my lack of a fitness routine and overall appearance since I have always been an active and fit person. Once I made the decision of investing my time and money into a personal trainer, I definitely did my homework. I was impressed with the reviews, Maik’s YouTube channel (hit it up because it is smart, clear info) and other social media accounts, and his history as a TRUE international athlete and an academic at NYU. If you choose to train with Maik and his team (shout out to Shane O’Dwyer!), you will be taught by experts who will lead you with science, discipline, kindness, camaraderie, and the utmost professionalism. There is no “bro” grunting, show-off culture to be found here. Maik’s impressive gym on E 57th has all the best equipment, it’s never full (which makes me feel safe and at ease), and I always see people of all shapes, sizes, ages, and genders there doing their best. It is very welcoming, as it should be because weightlifting and training are definitely intimidating at first, especially for a novice like me. I was looking for a trainer that wasn’t obsessed with social media fads or bogus diets, but one who cares about explaining the exercises via common sense, science-backed methodologies, nutritional guidance, and with personalized check-ins during the week to follow progress. I am almost two months into weekly training with Maik and Shane. I have already lost most of the belly fat I want gone and I can see muscle gains I never thought my skinny runner’s build could ever attain. I cannot recommend Maik Wiedenbach enough. My god!

I can see why this place won Top 5 personal trainer in The City For 2020. The training and nutrition coaching here is just great and changed the way I used to think about working out. I thought to have a nice body I had to bench like a 100Lbs but Maik educated me on how that really isn't ideal because I had long limbs, which explains why I wasn't feeling like I hit the right muscles when I used to bench press. I happened to stumble on Maik's name by mere coincidence on YouTube. Checked his website and was very impressed with what I saw and read. Made a few enquiries with the my local gym trainers and was even more impressed from what they had to say.
Got in touch with Maik and conveyed to him what I was looking for - a good, effective workout program for a 65 year old guy like me.
He send me two different very effective workout programs and have been following it since the last 3-4 weeks. The good thing is that it can be continued for as long as I wish without having to change the program every once in a while. He has also given me dietary guidelines that suits my taste and lifestyle.
Been communicating with him ever since on WhatsApp as well as email. He never gets tired with my numerous queries and his responses are very prompt.
His approach is friendly and professional. Worked with quite a few internationally famous trainers but their programs were standard and the personal touch was never there.

I found Maik online (through Yelp, actually) and decided to give him a try. I had worked with a few trainers before, but a lot of personal trainers (despite being in fantastic shape themselves) I have found to be either not great teachers (looking at phone, not correcting form, etc) or not thoughtful in building a progressive plan specific for you.
Well let me tell you - Maik has really changed my life. I have been going to Maik twice a week for 10 weeks. Ignoring the aesthetic benefits of looking and feeling 10 times better, receiving compliments, etc - the way I eat, exercise, and treat my body is completely different because of the KNOWLEDGE I have gotten from Maik. He is like a walking repository of health/fitness research (and history, if that’s your thing!). I have had trainers who yell and push you until you throw up - that is not Maik. And it is because he does not have to - it just is not necessary to getting the results you are looking for. It is about science, what and how much you eat, how you execute specific exercises to target certain muscles. Maik is extremely methodological, thoughtful, and has a great sense of humor, which makes the workouts more fun every week. I'm that skinny kid with a layer of fat and all I have ever wanted was to see definition and muscle growth. When I met Maik he just guided me along the way with his vast knowledge on diet, food, exercise and motivation. After working out with Mike for several months, I find myself being more motivated than when I started with him on the first day.
I have now seen my body transform to the way I want it to be with more definition and muscle growth and we still got more work to do. If you are serious about a personal trainer who is going to be there for you and support you along the way, then Maik is it. If you put in the work and follow his lead, you will see the body you are dreaming of.
Maik is a great coach, friend, he's quite funny too and he doesn't take himself too seriously - which is the best part.

Maik is THE REAL DEAL. In a city where there are many wannbe or less skilled trainers, I was fortunate enough to find Maik and his team. Maik has an impressive résumé and is extremely well versed in exercise science and nutrition. One look at his physique and you are a believer that this man knows his stuff and not to be doubted. I love the customized workout plan and suggested meal plans. Maik says it best – “we can only give tips”. He and his team will deliver a serious workout, you have to bring the energy and commitment. Though only two months in, I can see a marked increase in my muscle strength and feel fantastic after each workout. Greg who works alongside Maik is equally professional and inspiring. Maik is very intuitive - he identified immediately where my deficiencies were and put together a plan tailored to me. Maik's terrific! In just a few sessions, Maik was able to design a weight-training program to help alleviate some of the persistent issues I deal with due to poor posture and old back & shoulder injuries. I started working with Maik in late January and so far the experience has been great. I (and others) have noticed changes in my physique and I have begun forming a much better routine/habits than what I was doing before. Maik is extremely knowledgable and realistic about fitness. I've worked with Maik for about 2 months now, and I've seen considerable results: lost 15+ lbs of fat (196 to 178), improved all around strength, gained noticeable size in my lesser developed shoulders and arms. He gives me personalized nutrition and workout plans while conversationally sharing wisdom on anything from bodybuilding to early 20th century European history. I'm very pleased, but we still have a lot of work to do, so I'm looking forward to working with Maik for the foreseeable future.

Maik, is seriously one of the best in the business. Extremely knowledgeable about nutrition and the specific workout to fit your needs. I was always told that to gain I need to bench press, bench press, bench press-when I came to Maik, he specifically looked at my body build and started focusing on exercises that would make changes for my body (and it wasnt bench pressing). He also is extremely aware of the trends--vegan, supplements..and what is best for your needs nutritionally . Forget all else, he is one of the nicest trainers around--he might give you that feel of a big body builder but more importantly he has a big heart. I would strongly recommend that anyone who is looking to work their body and mind use Maik!

Let me preface this with the following... I do not write reviews often. When I do, it is only for OUTSTANDING people or companies (or the total opposite).
Maik Wiedenbach and Greg Pizarro are more than outstanding. A little background about myself... While I am no beginner (as I have been lifting for several years), I am also not advanced. After three years of too much fat bulks and not lean enough cuts, I sought help from a professional and encountered Maik from his many positive reviews. Note that I was pretty book smart from an abundance of research online but was not able to execute properly either due to something lacking or my own pure laziness...most likely the latter.
Maik quickly answered my email the next day. We set up our first meeting quickly at Lift Gym, a convenient location. It was a free no pressure evaluation. When I first saw Maik, not only was I stunned by his physique, but I was also very impressed with his knowledge and quick diagnoses - lagging hamstrings and inflexibility in my shoulders. We decided to focus on working with legs (not a surprise) in order to bring up my hamstrings. Although I wasn't sure about it yet, that was the day I also learned his secret of how to maximize gains (that I was not able to get by myself) while minimizing injuries, a huge plus as I am getting older.
Quickly after that meeting, I received a personalized diet plan and workout plan. I was impressed by the layout and the architecture of the plan. It was easy to understand and was detailed so that even the most novice lifters could execute. However, as a more advanced individual, I texted Maik regarding the volume (# of exercises, sets, reps) in one workout as I was used to doing more. He told me to execute his little secret and to just test it out. Geez was he right... I was dying every workout that week. Very brutal and intense (in the best way possible).
We met several times afterwards and had great sessions. I'm getting the results I sought out for so long and Maik (and Greg) have definitely sped up my goal of fat loss while giving me a great understanding of how to maximize gains afterwards.
Maik is fast to reply and answer to my many questions and requests. He is very friendly and has checked in on my progress even between sessions. I can not recommend him highly enough.
If you are seeking muscle gains or fat loss, Maik Wiedenbach is your man.
