People working here are nice and some of the ropes routes are great, but the Boulder setting is pretty uninspiring and just not fun to climb on. Fitness and yoga classes are very infrequent and the fitness facilities arenโt great. Come for rope climbing if you rope climb (not many good options beside movement in the city anyways) but for boulder youโre better off at another gym

Here and Harlem and Gowanus, all awesome. Routes and setters bridge gaps as I go to all three. So I feel challenged and like im making progress. The staff in all 3 placed is a delight, helpful and supportive, like the patrons.

Mostly older equipment and climbing holds so itโs not going to compare to more modern gyms. I was disappointed in the boulder setting. Lots of small box boulder problems - there were a ton of children so thatโs maybe why. The upstairs section felt like a waste since it only featured a handful of run and jump climbs. The bouldering area is already small to begin with so would be great to maximize the space available. Grade consistency was all over the place - A couple of V4โs harder than V7โs (also possibly related to the small box/kids setting style). Overall movement was not very interesting on most boulders. Density was good. Community was friendly and the front desk staff were super cool. Many people mentioned the setting being better under the previous ownership. Could be a great gym with a cool old school vibe if the setting is improved. I hope Movement takes better ownership of what is clearly an older gym with a lot of history and a cool community.

Started using the facility for their gym but ended up picking up a new hobby! Staff are amazing and very helpful. I got the membership trial since I was in the process of moving to another state but even that was enough for me to fall in love with the place. Will def try to join one of their locations close to the place I am moving into!

Probably the biggest rock climbing/bouldering gym I've ever been in. They have a ton of auto-belay to ropes and a section for bouldering. Upstairs is a mini gym with barbells and cardio machines. There's also small study area with outlets and free wifi. Lockers are on the smaller side and surveillance entrance to hang jackets (bring a lock and waterbottle). My friends and I did the intro to ropes and instructor Lukas and the staff were super nice. After the 1 hour lesson, we were off to do everything on our own with ease. Definitely will come back here.

Often come here, but the main factor between going here or Gowanus is the locker situation -- often the big lockers are taken, so I have to push my work stuff and shoes into a small locker which isn't great. There's also not a lot of floor or bench space, so it's uncomfortable to get situated when arriving / leaving. A lot of people also leave their shoes under the bench, and it's not great to navigate around since they're in the walking areas.
I would totally come here more if there were an upgrade to the lockers.

Been climbing here since it opened. Since the change of owners things have changed. There are a ton of team kids between 5pm and 7pm every day. They love to put the kids in the newest wall and make them do make-up and 4x4! If you want to climb here between 5pm and 7pm it really stinks. They have a decent retail shop, bathrooms are clean, gym equipment works and there is a lot of option on that front, there is a slack line, autobelays, yoga classes, meet ups and member nights. In the summer check social media to make sure the air conditioner is working. They have problems every year with it and it sucks to climb in that heat. But when the air is working, it's fine.

TLDR: if youโre new and want to explore bouldering, this is
NOT the place to go. Weโve heard good things about this gym but it does not lived up to expectations.
Yesterday my friend and I decided to try out a day pass. When we got there one of the employees asked us if we needed gear and, being new to all this, asked them if they meant shoes. I was taken aback when they responded with โyes shoes and chalkโ in a demeaning tone. I was only asking a clarifying question because this is an unfamiliar activity for us! Since we had athletic shoes (not knowing climbing shoes were different) we said there was no need for shoes and I proceeded to ask where we could get our harness from. They looked at me and goes โI literally just asked you if you needed gear and you said noโ. I asked a few more questions about what we could do here given we do not have licenses and she vaguely directed me to a beginners area with an irritated voice.
We are both new and no one gave us the lay of the land and felt so lost. Any time we asked questions she was unhelpful and condescending. We felt very unwelcomed at this gym and are hesitant to return given the absolutely terrible experience weโve gone through. Do want to give some credit to our fellow climbers โ one lady was super kind and walked us through what the employee should have.

It is great climbing for all ages
Edit, Iโve been climbing here for 3 years now and I have the same problem, all the team kids skip the lines and DONT SHARE THE WALL. Not only that the staff donโt care about it which is really annoying. Also the mini fridge is never fully stocked up.
Also ever since the gym became โmovementโ the staff got more rude, the food and drink stock went down, the simple first aid stuff disappeared, and more kids would run around unsupervised, Please fix this

Equipment is dated but works well. However, one of the staff members (named Joe) was incredibly rude to our group for no reason. We were respectful, followed all rules, and have experienced no issues before, but Joe was extremely rude, snarky, and sarcastic to us, which really ruined our experience. Gym equipment is limited and outdated. A third of the cardio machines (~3 out of 9?) were under maintenance for repair. Bathroom lockers are extremely old and barely open/close. The whole gym reeked of feet and was it rather stuffy, so I suspect there isnโt enough moving air/air filters?
TL;DR probably the worst Movement location Iโve been to.

not sure what it is .. when i signed up for the trial in May, staff was friendly, joined couple of community events everything was wonderful so i signed up for the summer membership and thought maybe i'll keep going and freeze it for a few months in the winter but recent there seems to be a change in management the staff aren't friendly anymore almost seemed annoyed when i brought my friend for member day and insisted it's not 7/23/24 when it was on their calendar when i walked in. i also had email confirmation. turns out the person hosting the event doesn't work there anymore and there was no emails on the cancelation. another thing that bothered me was that i had to wait for 30mins on a Saturday because the person who had the key to open the gym was late. it was really a great start not sure what happened so after summers over i'll try brooklyn boulder also in lic heard great things from friends
Also, my review is biased because Iโm very sensitive person and the only reason I signed up was because the friendly vibe and the girl who gave me the initial tour was super nice and chill. It felt like one of those gym that I can retire with everyone was nice even the rope certified examiner (had to take it twice but learned so much.) Then the nice friendly people I met in the beginning started disappearing I was out for a few days then when I came back it became a subpar gym. But if youโre happy do stay it is a great community the members are great. Some ppl only care about the convenience of the location. Itโs just not for me. I feed off on the energy from the people. It affects my mood and my climb Iโm just weird that way.

Corporate greed ruined a good thing. Goodbye, Cliffs. Hello, money-grubbing membership rules and punchcard restrictions. Want to use your punchcard at The Cliffsโer, โMovementโโGowanus? Sorry, out of luck. Off-peak, on-peak, no peak, money pit.
On a recent Saturday morning, the gym opened almost 40 minutes late. Is that what we pay for?! Of course, they have a virtual monopoly on rope climbing, so expect crowds and prepare for rude Daves talking at the top of their lungs about corporate mergers, mansplaining climbing basics to anyone who will listen, and complaining of the flu theyโve had all week while not wearing a mask. Awesome.

Ever since itโs become โMovement LIC,โ the staff canโt be bothered and/or are too lazy to refill the sanitary wipes by the cardio machines consistently.
Considering this isnโt a low budget gym, it isnโt too much to ask for. Suggestion to management: have staff regularly check the sanitary wipe bin, especially during peak hours. Itโs disgusting. Stop being lazy.

I love this place as I do the place in Gowanus. This place is great because itโs all laid out on basically one floor. There is an upstairs but you can see and wave to friends from the first floor. Just one big climbing dome. It gives me a sense of community when I see some of the same people switching it up on the weekend from here, Harlem and Brooklyn. Iโm glad not too much has changed once Movement took over. Love the staff, love the art work and of course love the community. Good vibes only.

This seems like a great place for top-rope climbing, it's a huge facility with plenty of options!
My lower star review is for the customer experience I received when I went for the first time last Wednesday.
I was telling my friend not to rent a harness and the woman who was signing us in then said, "you do know that all the bouldering is closed off today, right?". I'm not too sure how we were supposed to know but her coworker helpfully told us that it was closed due to an upcoming competition.
What really put down my mood was that the worker seemed visibly annoyed when asking us if we knew how to use the ropes and huffed when her coworker brought up orientation/training for us.
I believe that the worker realized because she was animated and cheerful when she was orientating us. Afterwards, she then told us that we were restricted to one small area because you had to pass a test if you wanted to use any other area.
The excitement that I felt before coming was gone at this point and I felt a bit swindled. They knew we were newcomers, so I wish that they could have told us that the bouldering was closed off AND that we are restricted to one wall before we paid.

Amazing ropes climbing. No doubt the best place to climb ropes in the city. The arching cave in the back of the gym is exclusively for lead climbing and unapologetically hard. We hosted my son's 8th birthday party at this climbing gym this past weekend, and it was an outstanding experience from start to finish. Cole N. the events coordinator, was incredibly helpful throughout the entire planning process, providing prompt and clear communication via email. He made sure every detail was taken care of, ensuring a smooth and stress-free experience for us as parents. He even provided a great recommendation for pizza delivery nearby.
We also opted for a private lesson couple of weeks prior with Jonathan R. for our son to help him feel mentally prepared & comfortable at the party, and it was one of the best decisions we made. Jonathan was patient, knowledgeable, and did an excellent job of instilling confidence in our son before the big day.
During the birthday party, our instructors Matt, Rachel, & MJ were absolute rock stars. They were not only skilled climbers themselves but also fantastic with our group of 13 energetic kids + their grown ups watching. Their enthusiasm and encouragement were contagious, creating a fun and supportive atmosphere for everyone involved. It was evident that they genuinely cared about their jobs and the experience of each child, especially our own.
Overall, our experience at this climbing gym was nothing short of inspiring & wonderful. We highly recommend it to anyone looking to host a memorable and enjoyable event. Thank you to Cole, Jonathan, Matt, Rachel, MJ, and the entire team for making our son's birthday party a success!

Friendly staff, friendly climbers with a lot of experience, and a large facility with showers (but no sauna). They have tall walls, a top-out boulder (but few boulder problems top out anymore -- too many injuries I guess), many lead routes all over the gym, a wild lead cave, and a few auto-belays. They have a low slackline for practice and a highline (with belay) for realz.
The routes are interesting and suitable for first time climbers through national champions and you will find both of those (and everyone in between) on a typical night. And it'll be a little crowded after 5pm.
Easily accessible via subway from almost everywhere, and it's worth the trip from everywhere in the City. They have a good gear shop and you can rent shoes, harness, and chalk bag. As you can imagine from all this, it's not cheap. Cliffs at Gowanus is larger.
