Persistent, major inconvenience with towel availability!
There is a recurring and significant problem with towel availability at this location. It's a major inconvenience to not know if a basic amenity will be available.
Today: Only small "face towels" were available, with no shower towels.
Earlier this year: There was a period where there were NO towels available at all.
Occasionally: They experience shortages and are forced to limit members to only one towel per person.
This has been a consistent issue. I hope management can find a permanent solution!

I love this gym and the classes they offer. I try to take yoga with Alicia Cruz a couple times a week, she is an amazing instructor, always offers an excellent class.
I also love the sauna.
My only complaint is other members will sit on a workout machine for long periods of time scrolling on their phones, while other people are waiting to actually workout. It would be great if this issue could be resolved.

Upper East Side: I go there now that the NYSC on E 86th Street has closed. Multi-level workout space; good selection of aerobic and weight machines. Reasonably clean, free towels, and a pleasant atmosphere.
UPDATE - THEY No longer have plastic bags for your wet workout clothing and the sauna is not consistently hot enough.
Otherwise, I'm satisfied with this sports club.

Very pleasant gym, with some notable issues: 1. Out of only 3 stairstepper machines, 2 broke and were abandoned for junk. Only one remains functional; staff ignores emails about fixing them: 2. The temperature in the gym varies too widely. On the 4 th floor, it’s nice and cool. On the 3d floor, it’s so warm that you sweat profusely just doing pushups; on the cardio floor, it’s stifling quite often. They have o my 2 fans, and they only reach one row of machines. I am pretty uncomfortable working out because there’s no air moving, and the temperature is not appropriate for the activity level. 3. The front desk staff is the most unfriendly of any of the four NYSCs located on the upper east and west sides. They don’t even make eye contact; and forget about a smile or Good Morning. You usually have to ask for a full sized towel, as the only put out tiny ones, and the staff just hands you one without even looking at you. Very, very unfriendly people.
In spite of the foregoing, I rank this gym as second out of the four on the UWS and UES. It had a very nice vibe, and good weight equipment. If it repaired its cardio, corrected its AC issues, and given its front desk staff training on how to be pleasant to guests, it would shape up to be tied for first place with 91st and 3d (about which I have no complaints).

I was unable to work out because the elevator was not in working order and will probably be out of service for an estimated week or two. If it needs a new motor, as I was told it might, then one- two weeks might be an under estimate. I can’t schedule my workouts in this situation, or other activities that require a firm schedule. Other aspects of the club were evidencing improvement, but it doesn’t much matter if the toilets are clean or the lockers in good repair if I can’t even access the club.

Opinion from an average office gym sis with 6 years of disgreaiful results (181cm x 92kg @11%).
They give you a towel. Dirt plagues the gym. You can do most things ok. All matrix equipment. Benches are life hazardous unstable.
Bb: 1 double cable machine, many cables, dumbbells up to 100lb. Many machines missing. If it is crowded, there is not enough equipment.
Pl: 4 squat racks in two different floors. 2 deadlift location. 2 benches with no safety bars. Plenty of discs.

But here's a longtime problem: Only 3 sit down aerobic machines at the front of the first floor. You should get one or two more. Too often they are in use. Very frustrating. It's a good machine for the older folks like me.

I had David Orsini for a personal trainer session and he is fantastic! I am a somewhat experienced lifter but he was still able to show me how to improve my bench and squat through accessory exercises and form improvements targeting my relatively weaker muscle groups. If you need someone to push you farther than you’ve gone before for both cardio and strength training he is your guy.

I rarely write reviews but as a gym owner myself (in FL where I split my time), I feel obligated to do so here.
By FAR, the nastiest, most unprofessional staff I’ve experienced. Backstabbing each other and members, making silly accusations, disparaging people who are just there to workout…just horrible people.
I split my training between E 76th and 3rd Ave locations and this issue seems systemic. Both locations were like this. Honestly, that was the most shocking part to me.
Maybe at some point they will recognize their issues with staff, but unless you are looking to be gossiped to, gossiped about, and treated like a criminal for having the audacity to train with a partner, find another place. I’ve even offered to meet or speak with someone from senior management to discuss, because it is highly unlikely that they truly understand how bad this feels and looks to members.
It just isn’t worth the drama and negativity when you just want to workout.
Oh, and like far too many gyms, they make it nearly impossible to quiet without jumping through hoops. If you do, call your credit card company and block them. You likely will save yourself a bunch of money.

This branch, on East 76th Street in Manhattan, has two BIG problems.
These problems lower the quality of this gym.
1). Members sit on machines for 15 or 20 minutes without using them — just scrolling their phones. Two of the gym’s four floors have one tiny, inconspicuous sign saying “Cell Phone Use Restricted.” No one can see these signs.
There need to be large signs, including on the TV screens. Staff need to mention this.
There needs to be a campaign. It makes for a bad experience.
2) There need to be clocks with a second hand. These are necessary for timing balancing and other exercises. This gym used to have them but they were replaced with digital clicks that do not show seconds. (Obviously, you can’t use your phone to time yourself while on one foot).

They recently changed towel service vendors and the towels are hand towels. It’s ridiculously small! You can’t shower or use the sauna with these pathetic towels! What is going on with this gym! It’s unacceptable.

The same garbage was on the floor of the men's locker room on Sunday (Dec 29th) as it was on Saturday (Dec 28th). And, does anyone ever clean the lockers (same issue; the same garbage remains in a locker, for days on end. Update as of 12/09/2024
I've had to downgrade my rating from 4 stars to 3 because the customer service at 76th Street keeps getting worse. I'm considering switching to another NYSC location. This would be a shame as I enjoy the classes, most of the staff and members, and the location. But I left the club today with a stomach ache. I go to the gym to reduce stress , not to increase it.
The good news: I'm now taking classes, and I love them. "Total Body Conditioning" with Zachary Allman; Pilates Mat with Courtney Crews, Yoga with Alicia Cruz, and Zumba with Go Kato are all great classes with terrific instructors.
The bad news: Management is doing a great job of driving long time, loyal customers out the door. No wonder this place has so much churn.
The two staff members that seem to be responsible for most of the problems are Jonathan, the antagonistic, do-nothing "General Manager" and Agostin, a staff member who often closes the club at night. The club closes at 10 pm most weekdays, and lately if you are not out well before 10 pm, Agostin locks the doors so you're trapped inside. One evening last week, I was about 1 minute late and he locked in at least twenty people for an indefinite period of time, as he never bothered to tell us when he was returning. He finally opened the door about ten minutes later without any apology. Someone suggested that I complain to Jonathan, the "Manager". I replied, "Won't he take Agostin's side?” "He won't", the person replied. In fact, when I complained to Jonathan, he did exactly that. And he blamed me for getting myself locked in, as if I had caused the issue. When I pointed out that no other staff members did this, he rebuked me like I was a child and told me that they all should lock the doors so homeless people wouldn't wander in. Nothing makes me angrier than being blamed for a problem by the person that caused a problem. These two clowns either don't know the first thing about customer service or they don't give a damn. Agostin starts bellowing about a half hour before the club closes about how we only have half an hour left, etc. I am sympathetic to the fact that the staff is tired and want to go home and I generally leave on time. But the attitude from these two is unacceptable. I have never been locked into any gym before in my life, and I've been working out for years. I think both of them should consider changing careers to some job in which they never have to speak to customers---digging sewers, for example. Because they are both awful at dealing with customers.
My complaints about broken machines in my earlier review have not been addressed. There’s a spin bike on the gym floor with no seat and a broken resistance dial that’s been there since I wrote the original review 6 months ago. The gym purchased new mats, so the shortage of mats on the third floor has been somewhat alleviated. They also bought more eight pound weights, but there’s still a shortage. The sauna's been fixed (sort of) but it's still not hot enough. A lot of people who used the ellipticals have left, because the machines have been set to stop if the user pauses or steps off. Apparently, the TVs on the ellipticals no longer work. The massage tables constantly break. The third floor classroom is now perhaps 50 degrees, instead of frigid. But the third floor outside the classroom is still freezing. When people raise issues with management, they are mostly dealt with rudely, dismissively., and dishonestly. (This doesn't apply to all the managers---just Jonathan. Denise, Kim, Carmen, and the other front desk people have been helpful. The other staff is nice).
Members are being told the club is being "improved" to justify raising fees, but this is nonsense.
If this continues, I will consider another NYSC location, at least part of the time.
76th St. had a good thing going. But their refusal to heed customer feedback and the hostile attitude of certain staff are ruining the place.

Dropping my review from 2 stars to 1 star. Shocking how mismanaged this gym is. It’s been two weeks without proper ventilation in the weight lifting area. Smells horrible and the mirrors are fogged up. I will now be looking for a new gym in the area.
Decent gym but they’re very disorganized. They don’t have proper labels on the dumbbell rack which leads to 10lbs sitting next to a single 80lb which is next to a 50lb. They also take forever to fix broken machines. The stationary bikes have been out of commission for months and the benches are somehow always missing one or two parts from the base.

Zachary Allman is THE BEST INSTRUCTOR if you want to get fit. I always leave his classes on cloud nine because he gives really fun exercises perfectly timed to the music, he's able to motivate and challenge you to keep up the optimal pacing throughout the entire class, he teaches clearly and corrects form to protect you from injury, and overall is super responsible and passionate about what he does. As someone who relies on external motivation to work out, I am supremely grateful to have found Zachary at NYSC because he's the reason I lift weights and do cardio 3 times per week. Bottom line: The man is a national treasure and must be protected at all costs!
Also, Agustin at the front desk is fabulous. He is so kind, positive, and helpful, and always makes me smile. What a ray of sunshine. Give the man a raise!

The sauna is falling apart and needs to get repaired. Old stinky wood with missing and broken pieces. It is a lawsuit waiting to happen if it doesn’t get fixed. 1st and 76th location. Once that gets fixed (probably under $1000) I will write a nice review.

The location near my home is East 76th Street. Here, the showers are disgusting. There tiny black bugs (DRAIN FLIES) in the shower all over the walls. See attached photos. NYSC has declined seriously since I first joined in 1998.

I have always maintained that NYSC offered a solid product: an adequate range of machines and services, no frills, at reasonable pricing. And I have been a loyal member for >20 years. But today I was told that fixing the elliptical machines (which have been malfunctioning for a while now) was “not really a priority”, no timeline, “may not even happen” - so if fixing basic equipment for members so they can work out in this location is not a priority, then what is?
Update: I haven’t been to this location for one month, figuring that should easily be enough time to get the machines fixed- silly me! Exactly the same situation. In the meantime all members have been notified that their dues are going up by $10 month - seriously?!

I made a last-minute dash to NYSC E76 on Saturday evening, hoping to relax in the sauna. I knew the club was closing at 7pm. As I arrived after 6, I asked the front desk person when they close the sauna. She smiled & said, “7, so you have enough time.” Well, it took some time for me to shower & wash my hair (I was pleasantly surprised to see all 3 bottles of shampoo, conditioner & body wash were full to the brim, especially since I had notified one of the staff that there wasn’t a drop of any in any of the shower stalls last time I’d showered there), so I ended up in the sauna at 6:45, afraid that I’d be kicked out. But no—the sauna had been shut off, but it was still pretty hot, and I was able to enjoy it until 6:55. As I was dressing myself, the front desk person came into the locker room. I expected to be scolded, but instead, she smiled & said, “you know we’ll be closing at 7.” As I left the locker room, a male staffperson, who seemed to be ready to do some maintenance, asked me if anyone was still in the locker room, before he entered. The staff response made me feel welcomed & not rushed, even though I had arrived so close to closing time. I really appreciated it & left feeling happy & relaxed. Next time, I’ll try to arrive a little earlier!

I enjoy going to NYSC the only thing I would have to say is the class selection is limited in terms of timing. I wish they had later Pilates or yoga classes considering I work throughout the week and can’t make a mid day class. However I have to say that I really do enjoy my Saturday morning Pilates class with Cheryl!
