As others have mentioned, I want to warn you about what appears to be a recurring scheme at New York Sports Club. As I explained to the manager Marvin Perez (who has notably yet to return my call, even after promising to do so), before my one-year membership at the 73rd Street location ended, I explicitly confirmed with staff in August that I would not be continuing in September. I was told directly that my membership would not renew.

Despite that, they continued to charge me month after month — even after I moved away and provided proof that I no longer lived near the gym. I haven’t used the facility once since my membership was supposed to end, yet they refuse to reimburse the money they wrongfully took.

This isn’t just poor customer service — it’s a predatory and dishonest business practice. NYSC seems to rely on members assuming they’re canceled while quietly keeping billing active.

Be extremely cautious before signing up. Get everything in writing, monitor your bank statements, and don’t take staff assurances at face value.

I plan to file a complaint with the New York Department of State soon and will post a copy of it here.

Friendly Shan at the front desk always welcomes us with a smile at NYSC. Shan is always cheerful when we come, and the atmosphere is very nice. Nathan is also a very friendly worker and is always polite whenever I enter or leave. 🫡👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
And Shan always opens on time at 7:00 — never late.🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡🙏🏻

Susan is a great teacher. She always encourages her class to meet the challenges but also is always there with easier options as needed which is always welcome. As a senior looking to stay as fit as possible for as long as possible, Susan’s class is perfect! Not too easy, not too hard. I only wish that her class was available more often. And it wasn’t so crowded

Ryan Hick’s Pilates class was excellent. His exercises flowed well, and he often offered difficulty options for each position. He is both challenging and entertaining, and it would be great if he taught a regular class at West 73rd NYSC.

I love Marienella’s spin class. The music is great (hurray for at least one Taylor Swift song) and she creates a very positive atmosphere. I rejoined NY Sports Club because of her class and another class. I like how she chats while doing the workout. Always leaves me feeling like I did a great workout!

UPDATE: I went to this location last night (first time in months) because I needed to stay close to home, and I was actually IMPRESSED with the changes they have made. FIRST, the gym was air conditioned! Every room was comfortable in temperature. This was a huge deal. SECOND, they also made some nice esthetic changes. That said, they have a total of 6 elliptical machines for all those people (every single other NYSC location I go to has at least double that amount), and I really don't enjoy this gym because it is so busy that you can't get the weight machines you want, and it doesn't have a nice feel (like it had before the renovation). Best in class still are on the Upper East Side.

It's an okay gym. The.location is convenient and I like to hang out in Central Park after a workout. The gym recently upgraded its equipment and most of it still works. One of the new elliptical machines has been broken first least 5 weeks. On a more positive note, the towel service has been restored

Totally customer hostile gym. Everything they do scrimps on things that make a gym an enjoyable place to go. Equipment maintenance is lousy -- broken equipment sits for weeks unaddressed. They limit towels to 1 per visit, which is totally inadequate for working out, sauna or steam room, and shower. Totally unhygienic. The other members are great though -- suffering together.

Every time I walk into this room I sneeze. I workout in here until I have a full on allergy attack and have to leave. Every time I leave I’m in a full torture allergy attack situation and when I get outside I take a full huge deep breath of fresh air.

Most of the machines or benches I use in here there are three of; in all the situations one of the three things is broken and I have to wait or don’t get to do that exercise. Only reason for 2 stars instead of one is the super friendly greeter guy who wears the coolest purple Nikes I’ve ever seen

Cycling with Erin is the best! She makes everyone feel welcome and does a great job keeping folks engaged over the course of the 45 minute program. She carefully designs each class to help you maximize HIIT style training by putting you through a variety of challenges in terms of speed and resistance. But, she also gives everyone space to set their own goals. Her 630 am classes (W and F) are usually packed and book-up within minutes of opening online. It would serve NYSC well to add back 2 or 3 more 630 am slots so that more members can take advantage of her classes.

I been going to Nysc on 73rd for about 2 decades
For most of the time the place has been pretty much the same but these past few years the management a staff have really stepped it up. All new equipment place is official. New equipment, the staff is always on point. Very nice and courteous. It’s make ur work out that much better when u walk in and are greeted by the team at the front. If I had to make one complaint it would be ever since the gym at 81st closed most of those member came here an that’s fine but they come to take up space an sit on a piece of equipment for half hour to do one set. If u gonna work out work out if you want to watch ppl go to the park. But it’s ok I still get it. I recommend this gym if you want to exercise, I don’t recommend this gym if you want to be in the way

My god. Just save yourself. Let’s just say that I was a member of the 80th st location before they closed. I was moved to this one and they messed up my billing and charged me multiple late fees despite my card being on file, and my card always having an automatic payment service active. When I cancelled my membership because their equipment is always out of order, or how there’s no WiFi in the weight room, or how I felt like one of those people who they scammed during Corona virus and lost a class action lawsuit, I told the person when asked why I’m canceling “because I need to” that was an understatement. I disliked my experience at this location so much that I cancelled and payed the fraudulent late fees just to put this place in my past, and I’ve been happy ever since. Avoid. Avoid. Avoid.

Decent facility for a lower cost option. Generally pretty over crowded after work and never seem to have enough smaller weight plates in the free weights room. Always a scavenger hunt to find 5s, 10s, etc. (convinced there’s only 1 set of each and never can find safety clamps). All the dumbbells seem to be mismatched. Janine’s Pilates Class was transformative and healing. I’ve been dealing with back pain and her awareness of the body and gentle strength training is amazing. Unfortunately, not all instructors or experiences are as body conscious. You really have to pick and choose instructors given the constant changes that longtime NYSC have experienced over the years. The gym is often in repair, the air conditioning was finally working in the studio again, and with other locations closing the gym can get packed. But the classes instructed by seasoned teachers are absolutely worth the less savory aspects of being a member.

They’ve blocked off an entire area of the gym because of “noise” after building an entire barbell area. Now we are all squished into an even smaller area of an already small gym while no solutions have been made for at least a month now. They also block off the entire top floor for trainers, even if there’s only 1 client training. That’s more real estate wasted while we look for places to workout in there. Not the best planning. Felix Odman is simply The Best Yoga Instructor at NYSC right now, & has been over the last several years. He (& his Classes) is punctual, reliable, diligent, attentive, caring, informative, assertive, creative, challenging, exploratory, & Fun! We always know it's going to be an awesome & occasionally transformative class, or session when Felix is guiding our Yoga time!

Only suggestion is that the Classes are truly limited to the 25 max capacity #'s at least at the 73rd Street location, b/c any more then those who have appropriately registered for these Sessions makes the Studio too cramped, crowded, packed like sardines & less beneficial for all of our flow, exercise, & health overall.

**Another possible "Fix" or Solution as discussed w/Nathan (Nate) at the front desk, reception, after class last Saturday, April 5th, would be to PLEASE ADD A FEW MORE YOGA SESSIONS throughout the week, or on the weekends at the UWS NYSC locations. Which at this point seem to be down to 73rd & 94th - After the closing of the 80th & Broadway location. **Please add more YOGA classes - If you ever attend or look in on the Saturday or Tuesday Sessions at 73rd St. with Felix Odman & Donald Cruz (also excellent!), you will plainly see the Demand is there!

Thank You & Namaste,

PB

Ps.. To be clear - Felix Odman & Donald Cruz are 5 out of 5 STARS. It is the overcrowding of these classes, & lack of enough additional ones that force me to leave 1 star out, plus the lack of Towels - NYSC recently lost their main Towel vendor & it's been several wks already w/o a replacement. Plus, the Men's Locker Room facilities can use an upgrade on both 73rd & 94th. Otherwise mainly good. Nate at 73rd, & Jonathan + Jeremy at 94th are Fantastic employees as well! Thank you.

The weight room is tiny, and dumbbells are horrible. There aren’t enough dumbbells and dumbbells aren’t matched, the grip sizes are different on the 30-65lbs. Plus there are no 10 5 lbs plates. No calf raise machines and no leg raise stand.

The location is basic but it gives me what I need. However, after the switch to the new machines, there are two things that are needed: one is the old “captain’s chair” back. Whatever the new replacement machine is supposed to do, nobody likes it. Secondly, we need two Abduction/Aduction machines. What is now one machine used to be two. We need two of these.

Shame on NYSC for refusing to listen to their members and putting their bottom line over the valuable community they have the chance to create and preserve. The recent class schedule changes, including the removal of the Body Combat classes and refusal to put new classes into slots that had very high attendance, are the latest in a line of pennypinching shortsighted mistakes that continue to alienate members.

As another reviewer mentioned, a simple solution to cover the cost of a continued Combat license would be to charge a premium for access to Les Mills classes, something many attendees would be happy to do. As it stands now, we are paying the same (if not higher) fees for fewer class options and fewer location options (within the past three years I’ve had two different home clubs close), and frankly I and many others are sick of it.

I would otherwise give a 5/5 score — the staff is outstanding, the gym clean, and the machines and equipment is great. However, it's often not in order. Dumbbells and bars are left a mess or not replaced where they came from. Huge plates are left on machines. And it doesn't seem that members are held accountable for customary gym upkeep and etiquette.

Still learning my way around the gym. Only my second visit. Haven't found all of the machines I normally would use. So far 1:30 and 2:30 have been good times to visit-not too crowded

very clean facility. a good majority of the equipments are new and good working conditions. personally, i prefer metal plates, which allows more weights to be added. the plastic-coating are fine but doesnt allow for max plate loading. but it is a good gym

Update: it's no longer a Dirty, run down gym. They have upgraded the Broken machines. And they toned down the often loud music so that The 90% of members wearing earbuds can enjoy their own sounds. The workout area is no longer a dump. I won't comment on the locker rooms because I live 300 ft away and don't use them. Also, the staff is pleasant.

Perhaps one of the best NYSC in town. There is brand new equipments and the cleaning people is always working. The manager of the club is Caroline who is amazing and hands on. She is knowledgeable, kind, straight forward in solving any problem. I must say that before Caroline, there were a bunch of awful managers and bad behavior employees that were unacceptable. I am glad that NYSC was lucky enough to find Caroline who has improved so much the club.

Quite better than before. New machines are really good. Laid out much better as well. The 73rd street branch definitely needs more 10 pound weights for the barbells and machines desperately though. There's a definite shortage. Also, the staff should probably keep up with filling the hand towel and the hand sanitizer dispensers much more.

Great renovation, club looks great, in terms of cardio equipment, well done, we could still use new & better shower heads, better toilet paper dispensers (that don't get stuck), (women's locker), better availability of free weights. A work in progress.

Donald is the best! He is a very kind instructor with great energy. I take his bodypump class weekly and wish he taught another evening session! That being said, the gym really needs to update the bars for the classes - they are all very bent and overused especially given the recent raise is membership dues and closing of the 80th street club.

-a 3 minute walk from 2 different subway stations and 5 train lines, B/C and 1/2/3 at 72 st.
-excellent local neighborhood gym
-decent hours for new york city
-good overall equipment from a calisthenics area/stations such as chin/dip assist, to cable machines to free weights, giving your body a complete hybrid workout regime
-towel service included
-VERY important - nearly every gym will blast the music on its workout floor, which is very annoying but af this gym, they play the music just gentle enough so you can barely hear it so you don't have to compete against the audio with your own headphones, or if you want to work out in peace; it is not jarring. it is bad enough that gyms force their music on the public which doesn't want to hear it in the first place as this is not a nightclub/disco. i understand they have to follow corporate policy of running an audio system, but at the least, this gym is considerate enough to keep the decibel level reasonably low
-i was able to build an amazing body because of the equipment and the location and operating hours which encouraged me to use it four days a week

i only am a part of this gym due to their offering of les mills body combat and body pump. not offering these classes anymore is a shame and will force me to drop my membership. management is out of touch and doesn’t understand what people want. how does it make sense to keep LM core when it has less offerings than combat? the combat classes at this location are so full that i have come and not been able to attend bc there were too many people. how does it make sense to offer new classes like conquer which have even lower turn out from members? if the licensing is too expensive, charge members for access. it’s a shame because body combat is actually a pull that nysc has in the city and they’re throwing it away.

corporate is out of touch with what members want. i don’t know where they’re getting this data from but the combat classes are full. maybe if they didn’t have classes at odd times in the middle of the day people could actually attend after work. wednesdays combat is my absolute favorite thing and i can’t go to nysc if it’s not there. tee/flora literally run the best combat class in the city and its a real shame to drop it.

also, there’s no AC in the basement which makes working out pretty dangerous so maybe that’s why numbers of attendees may not be that high either.

i’ll remove this review if combat is reinstated!!! i don’t know how else for corporate and management to get the message

I would give it a 1 star but the floor staff here is great.

Initially things were looking good after the long awaited overhaul 3 months ago, new equipment, a good floor space/turf for TRX and calisthenics, stretching. They even had 3 Olympic platforms. Which is great because there’s more than a few people that (now used to) go here who lift pretty heavy

Unfortunately someone from corporate seems to think we didnt need any of that. They tore out almost all the turf, got rid of EVERY oly platform, even removed the majority of the bumper plates.

They removed all this to stack the floor with matrix machines that all already breaking literally weeks later.

I would say go anywhere else but the other NYSC in the area are barely better. So I’d say find a different gym, I know that after coming here for 6 years I’ll being doing that myself

Edit in response to the owner response.

It brought in new racks, three Olympic platforms and a large new turf section. The latter of the two were promptly removed after a month. My review is subject to change and improvement pending the return of at least one Olympic lifting platform. For the sake of safety alone there should be at least one platform.

Second edit for the new response. You did have expanded turf. Emphasis on did. Then took out the majority of it and did a patch word job of more turf in the upstairs ‘reserved for private training’ area. The new machines are Matrix and while they look sleek they leave much to be desired. And on the desired note you only have 6 sides of the 8 way functional. When you got rid of the old cables you replaced it with less. But I’m not here to talk about machines. I just want one platform

As stated and again for the record. We had one platform before renovations. We had three platforms after renovations. Then *someone*saw fit to remove all of them. The lack of platform leads to a safety issue for lifters. A lack of understanding for those around them to stay out of the zone of dynamic motion and leads to the damaging of your own building floors.

I'm so sorry to say I'll probably be cancelling my membership. Not because I don't like the club but at this point all the reasons I joined no longer exist... they've closed the 45th st location with the pool and swimming is my main outlet...now after renovating this location (w. 73rd st) all the machines I used for my workout are no longer available here, and I have no liking to alter my workout with new machines... although the staff are first rate and actually so is the location, I simply can't justify the monthly fee simply because they have friendly people working there...my purpose is for a good workout and keeping my body in shape...all they have to offer me now is sauna and that's just not good enough...

It does the job, Very convenient location, and a big locker room. There’s plenty of weights and cardio machines, covers just about everything you need. The free weight and dumbbell room in the back is pretty small and can get fairly crowded. Wish there was more room to puts mats down and do abs; that space tends to get very crowded as well. It’s not as nice as Equinox of course, but for less than half the price, it does the job well.
