Terrible place to work out. There is no AC, and the air is so bad, it almost makes you pass out after 5 min time spent. A lot of the machines are not functional. The smell on the second floor is absolutely repulsive, which makes you want to run away even before any attempt to exercise. People at the front desk are generally ok, but not very involved in helping new customers. Picking towels from laundry baskets at the front desk is also kind of cheap, not to mention the sight of piles of dirty towels by the stairs from the locker rooms to the workout section. Don't recommend unless absolutely appealed by location.

Fraudulent practices. They originally told me that, given my membership, I could access this location at no extra cost. After I had worked out at this location, they charged me over a hundred dollars for it, against what they had originally said.

This place is so dirty, no exaggeration. The showers smell so bad, like pure rot. It also gets way too hot in the gym, not conducive to strenuous exercise. I’m shocked corporate hasn’t addressed these issues yet considering its prime location. It is an embarrassment.

The second floor where all of the machines are has completely stagnant air. There's barely any circulation and no AC so they rely on floor fans that don't really do much. The machines are fine and most work, but the lack of circulation makes it difficult sometimes to do cardio workouts for an extended amount of time.

I've been working out here for years. NYSC used to have three other clubs in Lower Manhattan: Battery Park City, Wall Street and Water St. Now, City Hall is the only downtown option. They've dropped membership rates (a good thing), but now the club is very crowded. The people who workout here are cool and the trainers are great. The club has everything you need to get a workout, but it is badly in need of rehab. Peeling paint, dated and partly functional equipment and older locker room facilities need updating. Overall a good place to workout, but NYSC needs to give this place a facelift to make it a gym worthy of FiDi.

They literally will not allow me to cancel my membership. I went to the location that I signed up at to cancel my membership and they told me I couldn't cancel it because a manager wasn't there. Their policy says nothing of certain hours for cancelling your membership. Send help.

Good facility but always issues with billing. Employees are just incompetent. They are very quick to blame β€˜corporate’ as if it’s a separate entity. Monthly fees keep going up but service just keeps getting worse. Stay away from this place - so many other options around.

UPDATE: still godawful. There has been little to no hot water in the showers for MONTHS. More recently, there has been little to no soap or shampoo in the showers. I work out, have to take a cold shower, and frequently don't have soap to clean myself. This place is a dump.

DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR CHARGE CARD NUMBER!!!!! I signed my son up on move-in day at College this past fall for a β€œstudent membership.”...well they have been billing my card every month for the full membership price. I had been calling and emailing the GM, David, every month about this and never received a response. I finally received a call from the GM in training, Greg, today 3/12/19 and he was NO help. I am forced to go into SCC and pay travel costs to get them to refund their overcharge mistakes. You would think reputation would mean something for this business but they do not care! Please do not sign up for their β€œstudent membership”! It is a scam....they will bill your card whatever they feel like charging! I am informing my son’s school as parents of out of town kids are getting scammed out of their money!

Gym is not clean, equipment is decrepit, it’s way too hot even in January, the layout and design inside is pretty bad as well. The worst part is that NOTHING feels or looks clean, from the floor, free weights, walls, it’s as if the equipment is not wiped down daily (or at all). This is just disappointing coming from a gym around the corner that costs much less.

This is not a trendy, new club. It has few amenities and the equipment needs to be rehabbed , however everything you need if you want to work out, is there. In addition the trainers are great, people are friendly and I would not trade this spot for another. I can also tell you that they have some really great instructors, Zumba on Mondays at 12 is great as is the Wednesday class at 1. Also Donna Clinton who does the spin class at 6:45 AM on Wednesdays is fabulous. She is an adult who knows that yelling in the morning is not the way to do a class.

This gym has truly some of the best trainers and good classes. However the ladies room needs an upgrade (get rid of the carpet and update the shower stalls). They have the worst customer service. i was charged additional fees without notice and then my membership was raise without notice. I eventually decided to cancel my membership due to their poor customer service from their gym managers.

I would give New York Sports Club a negative rating if I could. The gym at this location is nice, but after I canceled my membership they continually charged my account for another two years! Of course they had no record of my cancellation, I guess if you ever were to cancel with this so called "club" make sure you keep records for yourself cause this "club" will not do anything of a sort and will just keep charging you.

Unfortunately I cancelled my membership because the prices continue to increase without services to match it. Steam rooms don’t function properly, a rat crawled out of the toilet in the ladies restroom downstairs, classes fill up way too fast and I was not benefiting from this gym in any way. The only class I could get into and enjoyed was boxing.

Another reason I cancelled my membership is because when I had questions regarding the pricing of my membership I was placed on hold for 20-30 minutes waiting for Ricardo Ortiz to take my calls. He never answers his calls and I was told that he left or was in a meeting or not in his office. I was only able to reach him via email. The customer service at this NYSC City Hall location is non-existent.

When I came in to cancel I was not informed of the 45 days it would take to cancel nor was I informed of the β€œpro-rated amount” would be. I also was not informed that there would be a cancellation fee to which Ricardo Ortiz was very smug about. I will be taking my business to Blink down the street for a fair price and better customer service. This is the worst gym I’ve ever joined. NEVER AGAIN!!!

This location is really not the best. Not enough weights. Showers are not the best, and I witnessed an altercation wherein one member confronted another that was going through lockers trying to steal. Management did nothing and that person (who has to be a member to even get in) got away. So if you come to this location lock your stuff up tight.

*UPDATE: Reunited with the gentleman mentioned below, and we had a friendly exchange about what went down. I really respected his respect, understood his perspective better, and was glad to talk about it. He showed great character, and we shook hands. I had a great rest of training that day. I want to add that the energy and cleanliness in general has clearly improved since days past, and I think it important to put that on the record, too. Good job, NYSC. I see you. Keep up the good work!

I started my membership at this location, but find myself only going here when I have to. I'll prefer to extend my commute to better run locations, as the extra time traveling is worth the better workout. Here's why: as a respectful and avid gym-goer, I'm pretty disappointed with the etiquette prevalent at this location. Other members are one thing; them you can't much control- but when the personal trainers themselves don't clean up after themselves, or after their clients, it is a loud sign of laziness, and selfishness, quite frankly. Put your weights away. Pick up after your clients. Respect the gym. This is our home. Unfortunately, this location is fairly congested, so a little mess goes a long way. Thus a big mess goes a very big way. Sometimes, it gets borderline dangerous the way dumbbells are scattered.

This, however, prompted my writing this review: the other day, I was working in the TRX area, when I was told by a personal trainer that the entire athletic area is off limits during [insert timeframe here]. Sure it was a little annoying, but I understood he's a PT, and he's about to run a group training session, and he needs the space. As an independent personal trainer myself, I understood and respected his demand. I can always find other exercises to do. What's bothersome is when I take note that during his whole session (only three clients showed up), he not once utilized the small space I was working out in. Not even close, quite frankly. It was so clear that we all could've respectfully continued our own workouts, and it was so clear that he blatantly just didn't want to deal with anyone else, that his request for the space seemed like just a power trip. He was hardly paying attention to the clients he was working with anyway, and 90% of the time leaning on equipment like he was bored out of his mind, so all in all, his personality just snowballed into one big mass of a turn off. Then...moments later...another PT came over with a client during the first PT's "private session" and took up more space than I did. If "camaraderie" outranks logic, I don't wanna be right. Perhaps I sound ranty, or like I may be a drama queen, but I'm a really considerate and rational guy. It honestly is an amalgamation of months of putting up with a sub-par ambience, and sub-adequate, spacey training staff.

For the record, the managers, cleaning crew, and front desk folk are awesome, and the steam room and other amenities I am very grateful for. That said, I will always hit up another location before this one if I'm able.

For a clean gym floor, and a productive environment, I'd recommend a different location. Love the franchise, don't love City Hall.

Best,
Jacob

Please stay away from this gym. My wallet was stolen from a locked locker and it was found by the Gym's manager. My cash and metro cards were stolen. The manager told me that it was found by another member. I was told that three other members' lockers were broken into. The gym told me that they are not responsible for anything. The security at this gym is terrible and the management is completely not serious about it.

I would not recommand anyone trying this gym on a trial basis. I tried their discounted trial period and was told that I could cancel anytime before the trial was over, later had a hard time communicating with the staffs there, finally I thought it was resolved, couple months I got a letter from a collection agency... apparently I couldn’t cancel my membership after I signed up even if there was no contract of any kind.

This was probably the worst gym experience I have ever had, and I am so glad I did the trial before signing. I was confused upon walking in... there were childish posters all over the alls, and I felt like I was at a kiddy day camp. I check in, grab a towel and head to the stairs, where I notice a brown liquid (garbage juice?) trailing all the way down the stairs and into the locker room. Repulsed. I change, peek at the showers/sauna area because that was the reason I wanted this specific gym, and it was as grimy as the dirt leading up to it reflected. I said to myself, hey, you don't have to come back here just work out because you're here. I get on my first machine, an elliptical, and put my phone on the phone stand because I was listening to music on bluetooth headphones. I step down to begin and the machine flies to the right tossing my phone off of the machine and shattering it. first second!!!!

Rest of the time, I am already pissed, but take notice of the lack of hygiene in other members and lack of cleaning staff visible. I advise everyone to dodge this place.... it seems like they built this place with the old machinery from their better locations, and pay it no mind.

I've been a member of NYSC for over 15 years but last month my loyal membership ended.

My rates have steadily increased while the quality has decreased. Many locations I frequented are now closed - 44th St, W4th St, Wall St, and 86th St. 24-hr locations are no more. Nevertheless, that's not why I give it 1-Star.

The 1 star is due to the quality of experience. For almost $100/month (Crunch prices) you get $19/month (Planet fitness) service. Machines at peak hour our not only full, they are excessively full. I suspect it's probably due to many gym closures.

No longer is shower conditioner, paper towels, nor lotion offered. Toilet paper and Tissues are often lacking. One of the soap dispensers and electrical outlets have been broken for months. Towels are only for upgraded memberships (as are classes). The $19.99 membership is no longer offered - which would have been ok since due to the closures, this is the only location I now frequent.

Oh yeah, and the carpet in the men's locker room is MUSTY!!! Who puts carpet in a shower area?!

I've since switched to BareBones Blink. My only regret is not doing so sooner. This place only remains viable if you plan to partake in fitness classes, sauna and steam rooms, and travel outside of NYC to its better run & cleaner locations (a la Boston and Philly SC).

They closed Water Street because of Sandy, they closed the one that use to be on West Street by the movie theatre and DSW after Goldman Moved in, they closed TriBeCa, why.... Because the rent was too high! Now they closed ( oops I mean Relocated) Wall Street to a dump with no steam or sauna and list it as a Premier Club! What a joke. City Hall is the only decent NYSC in Lower Manhattan!!!!!! And they tried to lure membership with a $16 membership with no towels! That didn't last long. Now the steam room was closed by the Health department, the sauna is never hot and now they aren't providing lotion in the locker room!!!!
Sounds like a slow move to Out of business like remember Ballys!!!!! And finally all this I get for $85. each month???? TownsSports Corp your days are numbered with me!

Top Notch! It's a little small, and the treadmills, well, there is a kind I like that they don't have. But the staff is very professional, knows what they are doing, and if you go at certain times, they are always willing to lend a hand with a spot or some advice, if they don't have a client. As long as you go at the right time, you should be able to get most of what you need done. It does get packed at times, but what NYSC doesn't get packed after work?
