PERMANENTLY CLOSED FOR NON-PAYMENT of RENT

You get what you pay for here. After being a member for 7 years I’m going to miss this gym when it closes in March and miss paying $45 a month for a gym even more.

What I won’t miss is the staff who is asleep at the desk, constantly broken machines, weights left everywhere, and an incompetent management team.

NYSC, it’s been real.

It seems they finally got their act together at this location but it's pointless as this location is scheduled to close permanently in March.

What a shame.

UNETHICAL BUSINESS PRACTICES!!! Awful customer service. When I left the club they continued charging my monthly membership for several months. When I noticed the charge and called them to rectify the charges, they consistently avoided passing me on to the manager (Kelvin), who never returned my messages

Facilities average, cleaning suspect. Staff nice but not empowered. Had items stolen from locker room; staff spotted the suspect, still waiting manager to help who refuses to evaluate despite first demanding a police report. Putting aside incident. price is high relative to the value esp given different options available.

I honestly do not recommend this location. I tried to get in touch with the NYSC team so they could help me cancel my membership, and I was either put on hold or hung up! I even called corporate, and they told me I had to reach out to the location I applied for and speak with them regarding the cancellation. I can’t wrap my head around this kind of customer service; I never got a call back after many voicemails and online emails. The only option at this point was to free the membership. On top of everything, You get charged $5monthly for the membership being frozen 😑 so upsetting. I was still getting charged for a service I was not even using.

I do not recommend this location. If you want to enjoy your time at a Gym with great employees, I highly recommend researching and choosing the right place.

You get what you pay for. It’s cheap and generally sucks. Not enough stationary bikes especially when one of them has been β€œout of order” for months. Several pieces of equipment I’ve used have an unsteady shake to them so I’ve stopped using them. They never get fixed. I never see anyone cleaning. Ever. No staff on the floor. Weights are all over the room. Woman at check-in desk rolled her eyes at me because evidently I interrupted the personal phone call she was on (her AirPods firmly in place). This is why Equinox costs what it does. People actually do their jobs there.
If there’s a Planet Fitness convenient to you, so that instead.

What I liked: Great location,. great staff, decent equipment.
What I disliked: Dystopian and unAmerican vaccine mandate. Note this is not the fault of the business itself. It's the fault of NYC government. But I was forced to cancel my membership and move to another state to escape the insanity. What is going on now is NOT normal. It is unAmerican.

AVOID AVOID AVOID - Sketchy (at best business practices). Not only was I charged for additional months after the pandemic forced every gym to close, they've continued to charge after trying to terminate my membership. DO NOT give them your CC/Debit card for monthly fees as they'll do what they want and you'll have no recourse. If someone does answer the phone you'll get only excuses, "manager just stepped out", etc. It's amazing they're still in business. Several other gyms in NYC - save yourself the headache!

Haven't been to this location since before Covid when i had a rental locker. Club opened last week and came today to get my things when shockingly my lock had been clipped. My things were still in the locker there (nothing of value otherwise would be gone). When i asked the front desk about the locker being clipped - they had no idea. Def someone looking for something of value. From broken a/c, to disgusting towels to machines that looked like they had ever been wiped, 45 day cancellation + 10 dollar fee, this whole company is a joke and good riddance!

Same. Scammed. They scammed me membership fees and personal training fees during COVID. Now they've started charging me again for September despite my home gym at Varick Street not reopening. I've contacted my bank to reverse all fees before they go bankrupt and run off with my $1000. I advise everyone reading this to do the same. Immediately. Will never go to a NYSC ever again.

SCAM. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic they had to shut down but still charged me, ignored cancellation and refund requests, and now that they're able to open back up in the city have charged me for September as well. Had to block them as a merchant from my credit card as it seems that's the only way to get them to stop taking money out of my account.

Consistently overcharged and made extra charges to my card without my consent. Attempted to cancel and just when you think things are fixed they do it again. 50+ different emails over the last year to a handful of different people in management. Almost never respond and certainly never fix the issue. Mario Martinez (the manager) doesn’t take any responsibility and just ignores your emails. Save yourself a lot of trouble and go somewhere else.

We were exiled from the club we'd joined in the Village last summer, told they were renovating and would reopen in three months with the "opportunity" of using clubs in the area, namely this and one on 14th Street. The 14th St. club just closed, leaving us to this one, which has almost no monitors working and now the air-conditioning isn't functioning correctly. Nothing gets repaired, which makes me suspect they are letting the clubs run down and will then close them. This is now a year later. They have never contacted members, trusting we will read a sign that was up briefly saying our club would open as a Dave Barton Gym and we would be entitled to a discount. I've read that they assess fees when someone wants to quit. It's been a most unsatisfactory experience. Months later, things have declined so that almost no monitors work properly, many machines are out of order and if you question the management, they assure you the equipment is being replaced soon, but it never happens. The place is embarrassing.

I’m really disappointed with my membership here. I’ve been going to this location for about 9 months now, while I can’t speak to other locations, this one is not taken care of. The cardio equipment is consistently either out of order or have a myriad of issues, which actually inhibit a quality workout. Literally 6 of the 9 ellipticals have something wrong with them - either the resistance or incline function doesn’t work, or the entire machine is on a literal tilt so it makes the whole thing really uncomfortable. This doesn’t include machines that already have a β€œtemporarily out of order” sign on them. I’ve communicated issues with some of the equipment to the front desk before but they didn’t seem surprised or interested in resolving the issue. It has been the most frustrating experience. Additionally, the space is very small given the volume of people that go to the gym. Space to stretch or use free weights is super limited. I cannot wait to find a new gym.

There is almost nothing about this NYSC that I can find to be redeeming. In short, the machines are outdated and consistently 'out of order', the facilities are overcrowded, and locker room conditions are miserable. As someone who enjoys running at the gym, I can't find one treadmill that functions at 100%. This gym would do itself a favor to re-invest their profits into new machines and infrastructure upgrades in general. After 2 years of continued disappointment with this NYSC, I doubt they will take any initiative to improve.

Lacking in gym equipment and space. Only a corner of the room is for free weight lifting and as an avid gym lifter, that’s really important. But for the price point, it’s not that bad. I still prefer Crunch as their spaces are better, more geared to weight lifting, and for the same cost.

First let me start of by saying that this is one of the most cleanest clubs I have been to, this club is great on the weekends when the work crowd are home and not at work, working out during lunch break or the evening rush. Saturdays and Sundays the club is a ghost town great for meatheads like me wanting to use a lot of equipment. The only downfall is that they freeze the place like a meat warehouse and they have carpet in the locker room, even if clean makes the carpet smell rotten. Staff is very inattentive but it doesn't mean anything to me. Equipment is average but definitely one of the better locations that are not elite or flagship.

I purchased what was told to me a one week no commitment trial to try out since the location is very close to my job. I worked out once and it turned out it wasn't that convenient for me so I did not go again. Two days ago I see a charge on my card. I showed up at the location and met the same sales person I had talked to before and he tells me that it had "rolled into membership"! What?! Next he goes on to tell me that the trial price was a credit towards the membership and I had to call before the trial end to cancel the membership! I had not signed any contracts with them. I hadn't agreed to any charges. And above all, I know what I heard when he told me it was a no commitment trial. He also couldn't do anything about the charge so I had to take it with my bank. Somebody was also supposed to cancel any future payments and send a confirmation email. Surprise, surprise... no email yet. Anyways, I took care of it with my bank and won't be thinking about this gym again.

I want to love NYSC, and they are a decent option if you're looking for reasonable rates with lots of locations. The big thing I don't get is why they don't make the locker rooms just a little nicer. The ones here are carpeted (what were they thinking?) and smell of smelly feet crossed with old gym kit. If the locker rooms were a bit more Zen I'd probably up my review to a 4.5* as the gym facilities offer most of what you want for a workout

It took me 2 weeks to cancel my membership. Every time i tried to cancel in-person or on the phone, the representative would say "I'm so sorry, the person who handles memberships is on vacation" or "my manager left early, only she can cancel your membership".

Sounds like the one person who is capable of anything is never there! Or more likely, NYSC has reprehensible policies for cancellations. They were real quick to sign me up and charge me but they sure like playing games when it comes to leaving.

Beware of ever signing up for this gymβ€” they will raise your rates without any notice and make it nearly impossible to cancel your membership.

This past January, NYSC charged me a $50 annual fee and raised my monthly fee by $10 without any advance notice. They told me I had to speak with a manager, in-person, at the NYSC location that I had originally signed up for. After going in person, they continued to charge me for months after I canceled. I called 4 different times and they said I needed to speak with the manager, who was never available. Each time, I left a message with the manager who never called me back.

This is now my go-to workout location. I live uptown so it would normally be a bit of a hassle to go all the way down to this area to work out, but I work in the area so this location is a convenience for me. The gym is spacious and not overly packed with equipment like I've seen some of NYSC's locations. The locker rooms are always clean and maintained. They can be a little warm most times though. They keep fresh towels stocked at the desk and they don't look old and overused. This gym can get busy sometimes, but doesn't seem busy as I'm usually able to access whatever equipment I'm looking to use. Great spot.

This is one of the cleaner NYSC in the city. Very busy before and after work, even first thing in the morning. The location is a bit small. All the equipment either faces inward or faces a mirror so if you're self-conscious you might feel like you're always being watched. The men's locker room only has 2 stalls and no urinals so there is often an awkward line.

OK gym but they need to update some of the equipment. Television screens on the treadmills don't work.

Decent size New York Sports Club with semi-updated machines and clean facilities.

The lady at the counter was super friendly and made me smile with her warm personality.

The gym is laid out by sections. One of the better NYSC in the city. Would recommend.

Great gym. The addition if a second squat rack was one of my happiest days. Good classes as well.

Competitively priced when compared with other gyms in the area. Staff is helpful and friendly. It's shower and facility are kept clean/ in working order. NYSC can get a bit crowded at times which leads to a lack of towls but besides that it is a good gym.

It's a good club, Very clean, great showers--very private--nice, personable folks at the desk, machines always work. Nothing too luxurious, but how is that relevant to a gym? I give it only 3 stars because of the usual (new) towel policy. Put a sign up requesting that customers use only two towels. Trust us, before you sic the towel-police on us!

I'm torn. It's clean and convenient but coming from bally's it's small. The stretch areas are usually occupied and the machines are on top of each other. However, the quality and cleanliness makes up for the slight claustrophobia i experience. They've improved staff and management in the last 2 years and it shows.

P.S. The classes and staff are great here

No bad GYM. But personal trainers(may be not all)... I saw how one trainer (it was woman) trained one guy... He did dead lift. His back was bent (style -dog makes sh#$@t )and she didn't say nothing, just go ahead, do more.
Yeah, this not my business. And I didn't say nothing. But how thay tacks "PERSONAL TRAINERS" - just for pretty face ???

I don't go anywhere else mostly because of their friendly staff - excellent towel service, cleanliness, and sense of community and support.

This gym is very poorly run. The people who greet you at the door are nice enough, but the management and sales staff are terrible. The gym is dirty and there is no one in charge to discuss customer service matters. I would stay away from them. It's worth spending a little more at Crunch, or springing for equinox if you can. When I initially went in to sign up, they were running a special, which happened to expire on the very same day I was signing up (amazing!). Anyway, I was told I would be given a free month and charged a special promotional rate, but they went back on their word and overcharged me. They would not give me a refund (it took me a month to get anyone to even discuss the issue with me after persistently following up). I signed up because it was cheap, but it wasn't worth it. I'm back at equinox and much happier. My credit card company is getting my money back for me.
