Tried a community mat class with Abby Lee-Zampi and it was amazing. I've never really liked any kind of exercise class before, but with her, I've been craving going back again and again. Wish she taught more sessions. I'd follow her into hell if she had classes there.

This place is amazing and JoLynn is the best instructor and teacher of all time. I had never done Pilates. I came in and said "I want to work on glutes and abs" and JoLynn and I got to work. Pilates is a tricky concept to learn and the exercises don't always make sense but JoLynn makes them clear. She is an encouraging and optimistic person. I trusted her to guide me and she gladly answered all of my many questions. She helped me build mat exercises for me to do at home. We set goals together and updated them as these goals were achieved. The results have been nothing short of miraculous. I am in much better shape. My abs, hips, and glutes are strong. My posture is so much better that when I saw my doctor and he measured my height I am now 1" taller!!! I move so much freer and easier than before I started. Pilates Garage and JoLynn have changed my life - thanks soooooo much!!!!!!

I had been meaning to try the Pilates Garage for a while now (I live just up the street) and I’m so glad I finally did! I had an incredible first session with Paige – she was super encouraging and engaging. I appreciated the variety of the session and all her guidance to make sure it was totally comfortable and accessible (though still challenging!) for a beginner like me. I left feeling better than when I came in, and I’m looking forward to making this part of my weekly routine.

I've been working with Satori on private mat sessions, and she's just. the. best. Her cool and calm demeanor relax me and her creative and playful approach help me find deeper expressions of the work we're doing. And while I rarely emerge having broken a sweat, the work we do is clear in how my body feels the next few days, and beyond.

Beautiful oasis of a studio with the most wonderful instructor in Donnell Oakley. Can’t sing her praises enough. I have watched my body change: strengthen and heal. Highly recommend.

Consistently excellent over many years, and through trying times, this woman-owned small business is much loved. Exceptional instructors, a recently renovated studio and addition, top quality equipment artfully arranged, these are core assets of the PG. I am grateful to all who I have worked with, especially Margie, Hannah, & Donnell.

Donnell has literally changed my life. I went from daily pain in my hip (after a hip replacement) and back (disc issues) to little-to-no pain, as long as I see her once or twice a week and do the exercises she has taught me. She is extremely gifted in her knowledge of the body and how it works -- constantly checking in and offering micro adjustments that make all the difference. She starts every session by asking how my body feels, and then tailors each session according to that as well as growing my strength in a deliberate and strategic way. I can not recommend her highly enough!

Historically "a quitter" when it comes to exercise plans, I have been working with Donnell since 2019. As a 20 year early childhood educator, I know that good teaching requires identifying each student's learning style and then delivering information in a non-judgmental way that works best for them. It also requires warmth, humor and infinite patience, which Donnell has in abundance. She is a truly gifted teacher, who conveys the intricacies of muscle systems, posture and movement in ways that make sense to me and have made enormous change in my life both mentally and physically. Working with her has given me the physical self awareness, strength and mobility to do the job that I love, without pain or injury.

I've been attending classes in person and on line for almost 3 years. Theresa S. has been my primary teacher. What I love about her class - her ability to use descriptive language in such a way that we can create mental pictures in order to execute proper Pilates techniques. The moves are simple but effective and afterwards I feel stronger yet relaxed. Theresa is conscious of all injuries and limitations we may have and never hesitates to adapt her workouts for us. I highly recommend Pilates Garage and Theresa.

I feel so fortunate to have found PG! All of the instructors I have worked with have shown enormous compassion and a personalized commitment to healing and building the core strength needed to stay strong and healthy. I came to them with chronic back pain from years of a very physical job and I am successfully learning to manage my pain through exercise and by learning new ways to carry my body. I found many places that were all about "getting fit" but PG is about healing and long term strength and that is exactly what I was looking for. I cannot recommend them enough!

I've been taking private mat classes at the Garage and lately remotely for 13 years. The senior instructors in particular are really well trained in multiple disciplines and I've enjoyed all my time there. Administratively they have always been very easy to work with and have gone above and beyond to help me out on occasion. I don't think you'll find a better place to learn or continue Pilates.

My wife and I have been taking private classes with Donnell at Pilates Garage for 3 years, mainly to help with neck and back pain from working on computers all day. I never thought I'd be the type of person to go to couples Pilates classes. Now, not only am I that person, but I am also the person recommending it to everyone I know. Truly a game changer for any kind of pain you are looking to treat (far more effective than chiropractic and massages, in my experience). Donnell is easily the best instructor I've ever had, she's super kind and incredibly knowledgeable. We love working with her so much that we've moved twice, further and further from Gowanus, but still keep coming back. Go!

I've been to my fair share of studios over the years, but once I found the Pilates Garage several years ago, I never left. While I've participated in a few classes, my focus has been more one-on-one sessions where I have had the privilege, and I do mean privilege, of working with Margi using both the Alexander technique and pilates to keep my body in balance, and frankly to help my mind. I literally crawled in there with a back issue and Margi worked with me using a smart approach grounded in gentleness and healing. Eventually, I got back to playing tennis, dancing and tai chi. I've had a lot of up and down health issues since then, and Margi has adjusted our sessions accordingly so I can still receive the benefit of movement. This is not a factory; the instructors know what they're doing and are consistently educating themselves on new techniques (and you get educated in the process of working with them). If you want personalized attention (even in a class) combined with caring expertise, make an appointment or join a class. And it is next to one of the great bakeries in Brooklyn :).

The Pilates Garage is a professional studio of seasoned experts. This is not a studio where the instructors pay no attention to your form, resulting in injury, which is pretty common around the NYC fitness scene. I first saw the Pilates Garage in early 2020 while riding the B37 bus. After reaching out I was paired with senior instructor Donnell (the breathing, stretching, massage, body mechanics explainer extraordinaire), who I worked with for several weeks before COVID derailed us. We were able to reconnect about a year later, after I had a baby and needed help putting my body back together. In five short months Donnell has learned the ins and outs of my body’s weaknesses and helped me further rehab my abs, pelvic floor, ankle/foot injury, and 20 year old shoulder injuries. Anyone who has given birth understands that you sometimes feel like you’re in a foreign body afterward. Donnell and the PG have helped me learn to feel at home in my own skin again.

We have been going to Pilates Garage for almost ten years and we are still being challenged. The instructors are amazing. They are experts. If you want to travel back in time to your elastic youth, do your body a favor and give them a call.

I have been going to Pilates and working with Margi Douglas for several years. She always tries to mix up the routine whether it is virtual or in person and really personalizes the session for me. She is also very mindful of any issues I may have with my ankle or other parts of my body each time and always asks me prior to the session if there is anything she should be aware of or anything I would like to work on that day. She mixes in some Alexander treatment with the Pilates for me so working with Margi is interesting and I always feel great whenever our session ends. The studio is also very comforting and they have been super careful during the pandemic. The studio is always sanitized and I rarely see more than one other instructor working there for my in person sessions and most of the time it is just myself and Margi.. I would highly recommend her if you are looking for hands on personalized sessions..

I started doing Pilates about 20 years ago. After trying out most of the Pilates studios in the general Park Slope area, I settled on Pilates Garage. I have been taking private and mat classes there ever since. The studio is a gem. It is a small studio with a dedicated, experienced group of highly trained teachers and extensive equipment. The mat classes are rarely more than 6 people, which allows the teacher to adjust to clients' requests, learn clients' individual needs and provide alternatives to accommodate injuries and limitations. The degree of tailoring is much more typical of private than of mat classes in most settings. Since Covid all mat classes are still on Zoom; I have been so impressed by the ability of the teachers to provide detailed feedback even on Zoom.
I cannot recommend the private classes highly enough. All the teachers bring a nuanced and sensitive understanding of the body to the sessions. (There is even a (synthetic) skeleton we call Bones, to help the client understand body mechanics.) They draw on their study of other disciplines like Alexander Technique, Yoga, Dance and even Theater to deepen and broaden their Pilates instruction. This means that whatever your limitations or injuries, or level of activity, they are able to create a practice that will help you get stronger and more fit, and feel better.
I have been through several injuries over my 20 years, and my work at the Garage has been invaluable in helping me recover. The support, knowledge and sensitivity of Margi Douglas and the other teachers enabled me to continue taking class even while my practice there went from very challenging to very gentle and back again more than once. I venture to say that the Pilates Garage is one of the rare studios that has enough knowledge and flexibility to provide that kind of instruction. I cannot recommend the studio highly enough.

Pilates Garage is a local gem. I've been fortunate to work with the owner, Margi Douglas, who is doubly certified both as a pilates instructor and in alexander technique. She integrates the two during our sessions to help me with posture and body awareness. I have met a few of the other instructors but have not worked with them personally - they are all lovely humans!
