I’ve been a paying member at Planet Fitness for a while now, and I recently had a really frustrating experience at the Canal Street location. I stopped by just to use the bathroom while I was in the area, and the staff refused to let me in because I’m only a Classic Member. Apparently, I needed a Black Card membership just to use the restroom — even though I’m an active member who pays every month.

It was honestly embarrassing and made me feel like my membership doesn’t mean anything. I wasn’t trying to work out or use any special amenities, just needed to use the restroom quickly. I’ve never had an issue like this at other locations, and I expected more understanding and courtesy from a gym that promotes a “Judgment Free Zone.”

If you’re thinking about joining, just know that unless you pay for the top tier membership, you might not be treated like a valued customer. Definitely reconsidering keeping my membership after this experience.

Spacious gym, PF definitely updated their equipment as a gym overall which was mostly needed. Would love for them to introduce a flat bench to their gyms & more pre-workout/energy & protein drinks/shakes in their fridges. I went in just to use the location for bag check so I can run. When I returned to shower and change, a worker tells me I can't leave my sneakers by the charge outlet (my phone was dead). Then once I'm done changing a man walks into the locker room like he belongs there, almost all the way to the showers while the worker was inside the locker room at the changing room. I'm all done waiting for my phone to charge a little more and I'm told I can't stay there and "there's a charging station at the front". As I leave the man at reception tells me there is no charging station at the front. What is wrong with this place?! I have a Black Card and I won't be returning to this location. ✌🏼

The new equipment has made a big difference here—machines are almost always available with little to no wait, which is fantastic. Regulars are courteous, and the staff are professional: not overly chatty but never rude. They always greet you with a hello or goodbye.

Previously, some of the machine handles had a black adhesive-like residue that would come off on your hands, but thankfully this issue has been resolved. Occasionally, paper towels or spray bottles run empty, though they usually get restocked. The only real downside is that sometimes staff perform deep cleans using aerosol sprays right next to members mid-workout—these should ideally be used away from occupied areas.

Bathrooms could use a bit more attention. The HVAC system sometimes drips condensation, leaving small puddles on mats that you need to watch out for.

Personally, I find tanning beds outdated and unnecessary, though I understand they’re included as part of the Planet Fitness model. Gym + tanning feels very early-2000s.That said, the positives far outweigh the negatives:
Convenient hours, Huge, spacious, and clean facility, Great music, Friendly and respectful members

Overall, this is an excellent gym with modern equipment, a welcoming environment, never overcrowded, and a great value for the price. Easily 5 stars. Thanks for the new equipment. It has made a huge difference for all of us members.

How ya bathrooms are messed up with no option for me to use a bathroom. There's was no signs at all. Had to find out the hard way. Like I have a medical condition. Who do I have to talk to??? The thing is, I really like this gym. However, for the past few weeks, there’s been a sign saying we’re getting new equipment — but that still hasn’t happened. Basically fraud.

I provided my bank account as my payment method as well as a credit card as a backup payment method. It seems their system wasn’t able to debit the fees, so they reverted to the credit card. Fine.

What’s not fine are the late fees they charged on top of the standard membership and “service” fees, doubling the price. So I disputed the late fees.

Now I’m being harassed by their billing partner, abc fitness solutions or something. When I call them, they tell me to call the club. When I call the club and talk to someone, they say they’ll remove the outstanding balance, but nothing happens. And they harassment continues.

I’d like this resolved.

Walked into the ladies’ locker room today after my workout and was immediately mocked by maintenance workers, possibly because I was carrying my army surplus pack. They were working on the mirror in the main room. I went to my locker first and then to the shower area. Before long, one of the maintenance workers walked into the handicap accessible stall and walked out holding tissue but not before he looked directly at me. He stood there and said sorry, still staring at me. Luckily I knew better and had anticipated this behavior so I was still fully dressed. Nevertheless, employees must go through a background check and training before being allowed to work. I doubt that it is the same for contracted employees. I shouted until he left the shower area and to help keep myself safe. This is a very dangerous scenario. Planet fitness is closed overnight. Either have a pfit worker supervise these strange men in the ladies’ locker room or make non emergency repairs overnight when this location is closed.

BEWARE!!!! I rarely write reviews, but I feel compelled to write one because of my egregious customer service experience here. This is honestly one of the worst gym experiences I’ve had and I’ve been a gym goer for YEARS!!!! At this location, someone stole my AirPods. One of the former managers, Alfred, handled the situation very professionally and was proactive in reaching out to me and giving me updates. He identified the thief, confronted him, and he was able to retrieve the AirPods and left it aside for me to pick up. Unfortunately, he no longer worked at planet fitness the day I wanted to retrieve them. And mind you I was gonna retrieve them literally the day after he got them! So it’s not like I let a lot of time pass either! So I asked the new management if I could retrieve them. However, the new management claimed that they were gone, and they also claimed that they’d check the cameras but I don’t think they ever checked it for me. How could my AirPods have gone missing when it was set aside for me to pick up? I think that sounds fishy… The new management isn’t proactive at all in reaching out to me. It’s like they’re not even trying. Alfred handled the situation within a couple days, but this new management is taking forever to figure out what’s going on after they lost it, I don’t think they’re actually trying to help. They basically said that there’s not much they can do on their end. I’m super disappointed and ashamed

Been to this location a few times, clean space but not so much for the ladies room + changing area, especially in the night. Dirty when I come in, dirty when I leave. One night I arrived and there was a females pad in the garbage, I go workout, comeback 3 hours later and it’s still there, untouched. I have never seen someone in the bathroom cleaning.
Something needs to change. That’s why PF has a bad rep.

I have been debating on posting these. I enjoy going to this planet fitness in the morning, the staff is really nice and the people are friendly . But the SHOWERS of the women’s restroom is atrocious!!! There are 4 showers 3 out of those 4 showers have mold on the walls and on floor. and the 4th shower has a small sized curtain which makes the shower unusable. These showers are not cleaned at all, I have waited two months to post this and the showers still look the same!! Please planet fitness do something about this can definitely be a health code violation.

They haven’t updated any machines since the opening of this gym, if someone’s finger gets stuck here while working out it will be a huge lawsuit. This gym is trash because the owners don’t care about the workout equipment. The staff could not care less. Tell them about anything they should care about - broken equipment, broken fire alarm, whatever - they don’t care. When asking when the fire alarm would be fixed, such that the low-battery alarm can stop beeping and annoying everyone as it has been doing for at least 5 days, the manager informed me it was only his job to communicate to someone else about the issue - uh, no. The manager of a place is responsible for keeping it running well, and responsible for getting things fixed when necessary. Doing a job well means getting it done.

I was in New York for a week and planet fitness representative at this location told me I could sign up for a membership and then cancel it at the end of the week. I followed the directions as I was told and then realized three months later that I was getting charged a monthly fee When I found out there to planet fitness and to help you, but somebody at the front desk of the location where you signed up. And they canceled the membership, but they said they couldn’t refund any of the monthly membership dues they had charged me and I needed to call back at a different time to speak to a manager They gave me to a manager during the time that I was calling, but I was told I don’t know where he is right now you’ll have to call back like I have time for this.

-I watched somebody paint - (spray paint 😂) one of the machines during gym hours, with paint and fumes going everywhere

-Urinals and toilets always messed up

-There has been a constant beeping noise coming from an exit door that is maddening, for months. But they are too short staffed (apparently) to shut it off

Pretty convinced PF is involved in a program where, homeless can lock their belongings overnight and utilize the showers and not even workout. I’ve avoided posting this for months but the guy that uses this locker is definitely not well. When I happen to cross paths with him, he talks out loud about “being a good father” to his kids, “you can’t trust no one” and even one day accusing another man of looking at him in the showers. When he opens his locker the whole locker is full of clothes. He has the long large locker. Then, he spreads out all his clothes taking up a whole bench. I thought the purpose of the gym was to workout and go. My only issue is nasty clothes locked in a locker for days might track in or spread bugs and his mental outbursts that don’t make sense. This is why I thought there was a general rule of locks being clipped at the end of the night. I suppose that rule has changed. I’ve also noticed someone living out of a locker at the Chelsea location. This is bad for business. Might consider Blink where this definitely doesn’t happen.

I joined recently specifically because I work in the area until 10:30 pm and want to get in a quick workout on the way home. I came in this evening at 10:35 and was accosted and verbally assaulted while putting my stuff in a locker while in the woman’s locker room alone. It was a scary experience as the employee was extremely angry and wouldn’t let me walk away. I was told they’re “getting everyone out! and that “this can’t happen!!!” despite the fact that there was still 25 minutes until closing. I told the cleaner/employee that I joined specifically to workout until 11 pm as this is their closing time and that I would speak to the front desk to try to understand their apparent actual hours that differ from their stated hours and walked away quickly to avoid the bizarre confrontation. I’m currently at the front desk attempting to cancel since I’m legit scared to come back and they won’t provide the manager’s information nor an apology. Such a bizarre experience, really don’t reccomend this gym. If it was one aggressive employee that’s one thing but it’s apparent that the entire staff is this way. Not welcoming or professional at all.

Staff are so nice. Facilities are spotless. Daily class options available with the trainer via Black Card plan are great motivator. It’s never too crowded, and the atmosphere is very low key and comfortable to get a workout in. Love it!
