After careful consideration, we have decided to close the Retro Fitness East Meadow location effective 4/24/20. This was a strategic decision by the entire Retro Fitness team as we continue to Get Real and focus on providing our members with what they really want from a gym membership. Friendly staff, generally clean and kept together. The gym needs alittle touch up (ripped machine covers, missing pins or clips, wavy floor by dumbells) but otherwise it's a nice workout spot close to Nassau College. In comparison to the retro in farmingdale, it definitely has more plates which is awesome.

Was a solid gym but place seems to be falling off. Half the ellipticals are are busted or don’t power on and missing water bottle holders. Cable machines are either missing clips for handles or pins for the weights. Makes the experience a bit frustrating.

I wanted to cancel my gym membership so I spoke to someone at the front desk she assured me that my membership would be canceled and there were no forms that I needed to fill out I wanted to speak to a manager just to make sure because my brother, his friend & A guy waiting at the front desk all had issues canceling their membership they were charged even after they had canceled I waited an hour for the manager and no one came out of the office eventually I had to leave . i’ve been calling in to make sure that my membership has been canceled for the past two months and every representative I spoke to has a shored me that I would not be charged any further and I would only be responsible for two months after the date of cancellation get a check my history and surprise I was charged for the month of September as well . I knew that Many people have had issues canceling their membership with this location hence why I did call in almost every month to make sure that it was canceled but then I was still charged. I called him to ask to speak to a manager and I was advised they would be there at 4 PM I asked if there was a phone number for any of the managers so I could speak to them at that moment in time but I was told I would have to wait till four. I’m a very busy person and I don’t have time to go to the gym or to go in person or to wait until it’s convenient for them to speak to them hence why I’ve been proactive and I’ve been checking to make sure that it was canceled . For your own good you should stay away from this location it seems like they are money hungry and will give you a hard time when you’re trying to cancel your membership even if you do everything that you’re supposed to and you follow the procedure

I have a membership in the Carle Place location. A friend of mine invited me to work out with him so we decided to use this location. When we walk in the heavy set white girl at the counter was getting ready to leave she immediately assume that we did not have a membership even though both of us scanned over cards...She stalked us until another member told her that he knows my friend and he is a member..This was very embarrassing I guess being black while exercising is unacceptable in this east meadow location even though we are paying for a membership .This happened Friday August 16 2019 at 5.40 pm I think her name is Bernadette..please teach your staff to be more tolerant/respectful of your members, their differences and their ethnicity..BLACK people money is green too.

To all the many patrons (including my daughter) who have been scammed by this facility and treated so disrespectfully by the manager, please read on. Contact your local district attorney and inquire as to the legality of their collection and billing practices and policies. There seems to be much too many similar complaints regarding their policies and unprofessional manager. Also complain to the media. Arnold Diaz, Lynda Baquero etc. Also the department of consumer affairs. Don't give up. The owner and or corporate should have taken action to rectify the similar ongoing problems that so many are experiencing. Shameful! Their practices are highly suspect.

I switched to Retro Fitness mainly for their daycare services, but the facilities have everything that any gym goer needs. It’s a great gym that has all the equipment you need to get a great workout in. Plus, it’s always nice and clean! In regards to the negative reviews about cancelling, I had previously cancelled my membership when I moved (I have since rejoined) and had no issues. I think people probably did not read the contract and were unaware of the process, even though managment explains it as well. I do not think this should be a reflection on a great gym or franchise owners if they are rules set in place by the corporation πŸ™ƒ.

This is a nightmare of a Fitness club, it's not a clean place, equipments are dated! So I canceled my membership after a year in January and 5 months later, they are still charging me every month, I've been there 3 times and everytime they tell me that they would fix it but still not done! If I could give zero stars, I would. I can’t even begin to describe my frustration with this gym. I cancelled my membership back in November and understood that I was liable to pay for the following 2 months as part of the cancellation fee. However, they charged me an extra month and when I called the manager to inform her, she said she would take care of it and refund me the payment. Then it happened again... and again. I was charged for 3 extra months and was NOT receiving the reimbursement. I called several times a week and even went in several times only for the manager to be extremely rude to me and lie to my face. Absolutely TERRIBLE customer service. I am shocked that this facility is still in business. If you are looking for a quality gym, it is NOT this place. Trust me. Completely awful experience.

This place is a scam. I cancelled my membership back in Jan and I am still getting charged. This is happening to a lot of other people to... the lady specifically told me my last payment would be in March. I call everyday and a manager is never around or never returns my calls. I give it until Wednesday to be contacted or I will file a complain with the Better Business Bureau and a State Complaint.

This is a ZERO star rating. I have NEVER posted a negative review of anything in my life, however I have had the WORST experience with this gym. I cancelled my membership on 12/29/18 and was liable for another 2 months of payments (as per contract), which was not a problem. My last payment was supposed to be in February, however I was charged for March. I had to contact my bank to get the March payment back and stop payment on all other charges from Retro Fitness moving forward. I called the gym over ten times throughout a two-week span and left messages (each time with numerous employees) for the manager/owners (who apparently, are NEVER there). I even went there in person, and again, no manager/owners were present (I left my name and number). I have not received one call back from anyone. I then receive an email and text from ABC Financial stating I am overdue. Upon calling them and explaining the situation, I was told that they β€œdon’t handle cancellations” and to contact the gym directly. I can’t contact anyone if they are NEVER there. Maybe if Carlos wasn’t on his personal cell phone when cancelling my account, it would’ve been done properly. I patiently waited (over 6 minutes) for him to finish his personal conversation, to then be treated curt and rude while cancelling my account. I guess he was upset he had to help a customer rather than be on his phone. This is an absolute horrible way to do business and I hope no one else has an experience as I have had with this place.

Terrible management. Very discourteous. I signed up for an annual membership and 3 days later got hurt and they refused to cancel it. I had to transfer it to my husband and every time he had a billing or membership question, he had to leave a message for a manager and they never returned the message. Amanda the β€œmanager” is very irresponsible and non chalant. Every time I asked her a question she never gave a straight response she always gave me the run around, whether is was a question about my account or if it were a request. Such as requesting a towel to clean off the sweat from the dirty machines. This branch is very poorly kept and ran. This place is the worst I wish I could give zero stars when you try to reach a manager nobody is available I have try to cancel my membership and I was told I had to wait for my renewal which I was ok since I was pregnant and it was a high risk all of sudden they charge me with the anual fee and I called to cancel I was told to come in person and will still be charge for another 2 months of gym that I have not used for over a year I live an hour away from this gym the customer service told me that if i want to cancel I have to come in and when the manager is there like I don’t have things to do and I have to get there when a manager is there like really??? Decent array of equipment - can get a bit cramped at busy times waiting on a bench or a specific set weight of dumbells - or cable machines - but at other times it's quite ample...

I do wish they had spin bikes & classes here but sadly they don't...

Most unprofessional business I have ever dealt with. Cancelled my membership in December and I am still getting charged. It took months to get a manager on the phone. Finally I was able to catch them one day and they assured me that they would handle this and make sure I get reimbursed the extra charges. 2 months later still getting charged. How do you run a business this way? Customer service should be their #1 priority but they have zero interest in making their customers happy.

[Update May.20] Guys I finally found out a way to cancel this membership. You have to go to BBB's website and file a complaint with "ABC Financial", which is the gym's billing company (they work closely together). About 2 weeks after I filed up the complaint, I received a call from ABC and the lady basically told me that the gym said I have to delete this review in order to cancel my membership (the gym is worried because everything I said is real and I keep evidence). This is absolutely ridiculous, so I did not delete this review but I promise that I will update this review after my account is canceled, and guess what, after another week, ABC responded to my complaint and they canceled my membership without any further request. They also sent my a confirmation for proof. So, if you are having trouble with cancellation, simply send a certificate mail to this gym and after a couple month if they are still billing you, file a complaint with ABC on BBB's website and ABC will handle everything for you. Do remember to keep a record of everything just in case they ask for it. Do not try to file a complaint with Retro Fitness East Meadow. They don't care about complaint because their score is already "F". There's nothing to lose for the gym. But ABC do have a score of A+, so they have to solve the prob.

Really hope the managers of this gym see the problem and stop playing the games.

[Response to the Owner] The first time I stopped by the gym, the front desk told me they will not renew my contract after a year. They will stop charging me after I honor the contract (which I didn't even know that exists!). The second time I stopped by the gym, the front desk told me to send a cancellation form through USPS Certified Mail service, which I did, and i received the return tag. Both didn't work. And now I live one hour away from East Meadow, you ask me to "stop by the gym"? How funny is that? I can't believe this kind of situation is really happening on me.

If the gym keep charging me, I will probably take legal way to stop being charge with no reasons! And the manager, please don't worry, I do kept all evidence.

There's no excuses. If anyone join this gym, it will be a huge pain in the butt to cancel it.

Do be careful when you sign the contract. It is absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to cancel the membership. Do not sign the contract unless you want to be charged FOREVER.

I waited for a year and honored the unfair "agreement" they gave me, and they are still charging me monthly although the "AUTO-RENEW" is not on. Their financial company, ABC Financial Service once threatened me that they are going to send my debt to the collection agencies if I stop paying(to ruin my credit score). I called the gym many times and they always trick me on the phone calls. They felt my name is long and funny and they mocked at it, and always said that they couldn't hear what I say. I sent them certified mail to cancel but they never did. I've already contacted my lawyer and we will sue this gym in the next couple weeks. NEVER GO TO THIS GYM. GO TO OTHER GYMS. And for those who try to cancel the membership, do keep the records of your payment history, cancellation form and the certified mail receipt, membership agreement and other things together just in case you want to take the legal way. If you don't believe what I say, simply go Google "Retro Fitness Cancellation". The the company they use to bill you "ABC Financial Service", you will figure out what is going on with this gym. I didn't listen to other peoples' advice when I joined the gym, and now I have to spend more money taking the legal way to get rid of this membership.

By the way, when you contact the ABC Financial Service, they would say they are only there to charge and bill people, and that I should only call the retro fitness to cancel my membership. Also on the contract, it also states that do not contact ABC Financial Service. I don't understand why the general manager is telling other people to contact ABC Financial Service. That is obviously lying.

You try to cancel your membership at the location, they tell you to call ABC Financial. You call ABC financial, they tell you to talk to the location about canceling... I understand there are terms in the contract that require 60 days notice for cancellation - thats fine with me - but it's totally unacceptable that Retro Fitness just brushes off responsibility and says "eh, it's ABC Financials problem, we don't want to deal with it" ... shady way of doing business if you ask me...

I have been trying to get credited on two mistaken charges since August. It is now December 2017. I spoke to manager, member services manager who both assured me it would be taken care of. Nothing. It’s almost impossible to get the manager in person. It seems she is never there. They gave me no paperwork except two welcome emails and constant calls from a collection agency to update my credit card. It’s a great gym if you don’t have a billing problem.

I tried cancelling. They initially and correctly told me I had to wait for my year sign-up to end, which is fine. But then I tried cancelling and "sorry, Retro Fitness Requires a 60-day pending period before letting you cancel. "Your last payment will be at the start of October." this East Meadow location tells me in-person.

Fast-forward to the beginning of November and I get a charge on my credit card. I call, and they admit this is a mistake and that it will take a couple business days to reverse the charge. It is now November 11th, and the charge has yet to be refunded.

This location is a rip-off. even when I decide I can afford a gym again, I am not going back here.

Edit: On November 16, I received an email saying my account is in collections. I have tried calling multiple times with employees promising me that a manager will call their Financial dept to resolve this and either email or call me to confirm. It is now November 21, no response.

If I could give this gym zero stars I would. Not for their equipment, not for the staff, but for the fact that my husband and I cancelled our memberships in June and were told that we'd have to pay 2 months post-cancellation, and then we'd be removed from billing. Now, it's almost December and we've still been getting billed every month. We've spoken ad nauseam to the manager (I believe it was Christina) and their staff, and are told each time that it will get taken care of. And every month that goes by and we get billed, we hear nothing back from them! We call constantly, and the staff tells us that they are not authorized to remove us from the billing. My question is: how difficult can it be for the managers to do so? $20 a month doesn't seem like much, but now, two people and several months later, that money is adding up, with no sign of getting credited.

Stay far, far away from this gym -- unless you don't mind paying for something that you don't use anymore for the rest of your life. Shame on them for stealing their ex-customer's money.

I am pregnant and im still trying to cancel and talk to the current manager about a refund. Never go trainning with the β€œpure core” . The same exercises every seccion, no motivation. When I tried to cancel they told me they would still bill me 2 more months. They said it was in the agreement. The problem is that I was never told there was an agreement in between. When you sin in in person, they run your credit card and you sign in the screen as you do in a pharmacy, supermarket or restaurant. It was never clear or pointed out that there was an agreement. Fine gym until you try to cancel. They make you go to the gym to cancel only to tell you you have to do an additional month at the end. This was not specified when signing up. I canceled in May and in September I'm still getting billed so I canceled the credit card. Now I get calls daily from some billing company that tells me my account is still active and I have to go to the gym to get it taken care of. Been there 4 times and there's never a manager who is the "only one that can do anything about it" and I'm still waiting for the manager to call me. And from all the reviews here it seems to be standard practice. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

The owners are a joke. My girlfriend injured her knee and submitted doctor authorized paperwork to cancel her membership because she is unable to continue working out and they still continue to attempt to bill her. They return zero phone calls trying to resolve this and now have a secondary company trying to collect payment. Amanda the owner is a crook. You dont run a buisness this way. No wonder your gym has a F rating and 30+ complaints on the better business bureau. Completely unacceptable and unprofessional to the point it will effect her credit because you refuse to take 10 minutes of your day to fix this. I highly advise staying away from this gym and going to one of the other 20 local places to work out.

This place is terrible. They continue to charge after you cancel your membership and advise that they will refund the payment but it takes an extremely long time and they blame it on the financial company that they work with. I recommend that nobody join this gym because they will continue to charge you even after you cancel your acct. The manager also took several days to return my call and she is the only one who can even refund the payment. Then, I spoke to a rep there on the phone who spoke to me inappropriately and told me that theres nothing she could do because she's new. This gym illegally will charge you when you cancel your acct.

I have been a memeber for over 5 years. The place is always clean and the people that work there are always friendly. Even at their busiest times I can always find a tread mill to use. Contrary to some of the negative reviews posted, I have alwyas found the front staff to be very friendly and responsive. I will happily continue to go to this gym. At $20 a month, it's great deal!
It appears that othe members have had issues with cancelling thier memberships but I cancelled my son's membership when he went away to college 4 years ago and had no problems. The only criticism I would make is that I wished they had two rowing machines, instead of of just one.

This is the worst gym I have ever signed up for.

After I cancelled, they charged me for another month. Now I keep trying to get my money back but they keep saying there's no manager in. I've called so many times for them just to tell me "I'll leave a note on your account for a manager to call you." BUT THEY NEVER DO. I would recommend this gym to no one.

They don't update the comments on your account. So everytime I call they say well the last update on your account is this.... I'm like I've talked to yall since then!!!!! UPDATE MY ACCOUNT.

This gym is always packed, machines are usually broken for a while and there's just not enough equipment to go around.

This is a very good gym. I'm not sure why people giving it 1 star. You should be rating the overall experiencing and the facility not the fact you having issues with your account. The gym is usually crowded on weekdays but that's peak hours which is expected. They have enough equipment for everyone to enjoy a good workout. Staffs are friendly, facility is clean - especially lockers.

I had to downgrade to a 3 star from last time because the cancelling policy is absurd. Now I see why people give it one start since this is part of the overall experience. This is 2016 I shouldn't have to mail a letter and wait 60 days to cancel my membership when it takes 2 minutes to join. Retro fitness needs to do a much better job about this process.

Scammers , The manager amanda is rude, you could never get in touch with her, canceling is a "nightmare", they will still continue to bill you and lie to you and say they are trying to resolve the issue. I signed up over the phone which is illegal, the tricked me into a year long contract which I thought was a 2 months free trial with no obligation, so after be charged for 1 year every month i finally got the opportunity to cancel. the problem is I am still continously being billed. Don't ever trust the front desk staff they will tell you anything just to get you out of the ear. a real nightmare. I cant believe they are willing to ruin there reputation for 20 bucks a month all the negative comments are valid because i have experience the same thing. join at your own risk. I cant believe amanda still has a job with all the negative comments about her.

My poor experience of the East Meadow Retro Fitness began not when I was attending the gym but upon cancellation of my service. I cancelled my membership several months ago and was advised by a gentleman working there that I would be charged an additional two months after cancelling. I did not agree with the company's tactics but signed the cancellation form and that was it, or so I thought. I was charged for an additional two months as expected but the charges did not cease. Then I was charged an annual renewal fee of $39.95 and that was when I first called. I spoke with ABC finance whom handles the membership fees and they immediately advised that they could do nothing to reverse the charge and I had to speak with the gym personally. I visited the gym and spoke to a woman who was pleasant and seemed knowledgeable. She advised me that there was certainly a mistake and she would reverse back to my account a total of $58.99. Two months later I have yet to see a credit to my account and of course ABC finance is still attempting to charge me. The only reason they could not charge me is because my debit card expiration changed. I contacted ABC finance again and the woman seemed quite unsure of every piece of information she provided. She said she would have an account manager contact me, which of course never happened. So I visited the gym in person again and spoke with another young lady, Lisa I believe. Again, she was courteous but advised there was nothing she could do. She apologized, stated that she sees notes on the system and that I should have been credited by now. She said she would have a manager call me back but again nothing. At this point I have no choice but to visit my bank and report Retro Fitness as conducting fraud on my account. It is scary to believe that in this day and age companies still conduct themselves in such a poor manner. I only hope that whomever reads this acknowledges the ongoing issue and actually finalizes a resolution.

This gym EAST MEADOW RETRO has the worse front desk ever! one girl in particular her name is Amanda Gould. I got her name from another member there she was so rude and nasty and many members have said they have had VARIOUS problems with her. she was so rude to everyone that walked in, was on her cell phone the whole time and when I needed help was laughing and mocking other members that were there. She was literally making fun of everyone walking in. in front of other members. Their service is terrible at the gym. They should be ashamed of themselves. DO NOT JOIN THIS RETRO. I have had a number of problems with them and the memberships and they don't seem to care. They should be ashamed of themselves.

If I could give worse the one star I would. I am a local mom and I work hard. Please don't waste any of your money here. They are sooooo rude. No one and I mean no one returns any phone calls if you have a problem and or a question. If you try to cancel good luck, they just bill and bill and bill you. Even if you block them from your credit card, they then send you to collections and call you 100x a day. Zero customer service. Look them up on the BBB before going here. They have a "F" rating...with many, many, many complaints. Do your research!!

this establishment is a 5-star scam. I'm another example of a person they've been stealing from for a whole year now. i cancelled because i live in queens now and dont have time, so they hit u with two month cancellation. alright scumbags take it. i dont check my account too often but when i did, i was surprised i see a charge from retro 5 months after i cancelled. so i called and the girl says oh yeah i see you did cancel we ll put it back on your account. 3 months later i see it again and i go through the same process they say itll take 7 business days. but this time i watched and they didnt pay me back. once i called and theyll finally inform manager dearest. she calls and tells me they dont have paperwork... and they dare mention the two month cancellation period. the gym is fine, but this dirty business makes me sick to my stomach. dont get lured in by the price tag. it ended up costing me more than i can afford.

I joined Retro fitness and was a member for about eight months before I decided I no longer wanted/needed it. I read the reviews and felt "this will not happen to me, I was a loyal client". I could not have been more wrong. I sent them a certified letter, knowing that I would be charged an additional 60 days. They charged me 90 days after I cancelled. Retro claimed it was not them and sent me to the billing company, the billing company sent me back to retro and so on. The company gave me the same run around they gave other clients. No one would take responsibility for continuing to charge me. I have never written a bad review but this company definitely deserves it. It is poorly run and need to practice better customer service. Unless you plan to stay with them FOREVER, I would not sign a contract with them.

My experience with Retro Fitness could not be worse. I moved to another town in September. Therefore, I went to Retro Fitness to cancel my membership. However, they said they could not cancel it because I just moved from East Meadow to Franklin Square (just a 30 minute trip one way!!!!!!). They said I had to wait until my contract expired in April 2014! Well, I had no other alternative but pay until my contract expired, but I asked them to cancel my Yoga class (10 dollars more) because that was an extra activity and it was not included in the contract. To my surprise they continued to charge for the yoga until a few months ago and only after I called them a few times and went there in person to complain. Every time they would say they would tell their manager. Well, they finally removed the yoga from my bill, but it is already July and they are still charging me for my membership!!!!!!!!! The woman on the phone was almost stuttering trying to explain why they were still charging me, and again she said she was going to tell her manager. I think that for them $19,00 is more important than being respected and referred to other people. I am not sure it is pure greed or disorganization! I will never refer them to anybody and every time I have an opportunity I tell every person I know about this awful experience. They are going to lose more than $19,00 with that policy and bad philosophy of work.

I've been going to Retro since October of 2012, and I've had nothing but a good experience with them. Contrary to most of the other reviews, the staff is very nice and always helpful, and the owner is one of the nicest guys I've ever met. The gym itself is nowhere even near what could be considered "dirty", it's actually one of the cleanest I've ever been to. Membership cancellation issues don't really fall on the gym or its ownership. If YOU didn't take the time to look over the contract before you signed it, that isn't their fault. All in all, Retro is a much better gym than the google reviews reflect.

I didn't quite understand those other reviews. I have been to manyyyy gyms and have never been in a gym so clean in my life. The staff always seems friendly and helpful to me and unlike almost all other gyms, there were no weights laying all over the place, and all the weights were organized. I would definitely recommend this gym and for $20 a month I have yet to find anyplace better!

RETRO Staff tell you your membership is cancelled and then they still charge you because when you first join part of the contract which no one tells you is the contract actually renews when it self when it expires ....another scam to get your money DO NOT JOIN UNLESS YOU WANT TO GET SCAMMED!!!!!!!! When you ask to talk to a manager they say "SHE'S OUT" then you leave your info because they say she (the manager) will call you but no one ever gets back to you. The Worst manager ive ever seen in any type of business The Owner should be ashamed lol
