Do not join this gym. The management is a disaster. I am canceling my membership after a series of completely unprofessional and unacceptable interactions with the manager, Mike. He made inappropriate comments about my workout partners and created a hostile environment.
More egregiously, he told my coworker he had canceled her membership, only to have her receive a collections notice months later for a bill he explicitly said was handled. This is not just poor customer service; it's deceitful business practice. When I tried to simpliy cancel my membership today they wouldn't even give me a simple written acknowledgement that it is cancelled.
Additionally, on another occasion, Mike made an incredibly inappropriate and rude comment to my girlfriend, asking "which girl is this" and saying it was like the "third girl" I had brought in. This kind of unprofessional and personal commentary is completely out of line for a gym manager.
This manager's behavior is a liability to the gym and a complete disservice to its members. The lack of professionalism and integrity is shocking. Save yourself the headache and find a gym with a management team that actually respects its members.

Terrible hours and terrible service. Employees shut off the lights before closing time without warning and told everyone to get out using their phone flashlights. I don't know how this place is still open.

The gym itself is pretty good (not super packed, complete equipment for most things)
Giving it a 1 star because that doesn't make up for absolutely HORRIBLE customer service and incredibly outdated cancellation policies.
-You have to send a physical letter through the post office instead of talking to someone at the branch or managing it online. I did this last November 2019
-I still get charged the next month because someone didn't adjust my status. I'm unaware of this charge and only found out because I randomly decided to check their website
-By the time I found out I was already charged a late fee
-I was also charged the annual membership fee for the next year that I'm not going to use because I cancelled, since it charged on December.
-As of January, I called the branch to confirm that they got the mail (which I'm sure they got the previous month because I sent it with USPS tracking) and that my membership's been cancelled. They do this and confirm verbally
-I received an email a few days ago that all billing will be paused because of the pandemic. Curious, I checked my online account today and apparently I have a pending payment for APRIL 2020 and they did not actually cancel the membership.
-There's no way to contact the branch as they only have a phone number listed
Update (Nov 2020): they try to charge me again after I already cancelled?
Update 2: they’re trying to charge the annual fee too…

Not helpful/ not friendly staffs. They make up all excuses not to cancel your membership. Staff said Only manager is allowed to cancel membership and he is only at the location before 12:30pm. Basically if you are busy before 12:30pm you can’t cancel your membership. Finally got to speak to its manager on the phone and pending email confirmation of membership cancellation. At this date and age they should allow clients to cancel their membership online already!

This gym location is hella depressing. It has terrible lighting, the gym overall seems kinda like a mess, there are alot of plates scattered throughout the gym so you have to go look around for plates.
If your looking to get serious about fitness, I would definitely not recommend. It’s a place that’s designed to make you not want to come back.

I’ll provide the exact same words of warning provided by one of the earlier reviewers: “if you join and try to cancel, they won’t actually cancel your membership and will keep charging you indefinitely.”
Up until the end of January 2023, I was going to Retro Fitness about 2-3 times a week fairly consistently. I decided I wanted to cancel around February 2023, so I spoke to an employee. The employee assured me I was good to go on the cancellation. I did what any normal person would and took their word for it. I admit that it was a partial blunder on my part: I didn’t look closely at my statements and didn’t get a written confirmation.
Fast-forward to December 2023, I realized Retro Fitness never cancelled my membership. I went in and spoke to Mike. I told him how I had spoken to an employee and that they had told me I was good to go on the cancellation. Mike told me I was out of luck on the refund since the other employee hadn’t followed cancellation procedures and because I didn’t get a written confirmation.
But here are the facts. I had been going 2-3 times every week prior to my cancellation. Once I cancelled, I had not gone a single time in the 10 months I was charged. Furthermore, I had a serious injury that required surgery and immobilized me for roughly 3 months, so there was no reason I would’ve continued my membership as they claim.
Mike then asked me if I wanted to cancel, and I, of course, confirmed I wanted to cancel since they claimed I hadn’t cancelled previously. I didn’t want to make the same mistake as last time and asked for a written confirmation of my cancellation.
Unsurprisingly, Mike refused to provide me a written confirmation of my cancellation at that time. He said I would have to call in the following week for the written cancellation confirmation, even though I was cancelling that day. It’s not hard to guess what’s potentially going on if you put two and two together.
To whoever is reading, this gym is an acceptable gym to join. But, please be extra diligent when you try and cancel.

It seemed that one employee in Retrofitness gym in Battery Park didn't appreciate my previous comment and made a sly remark with a dubious tone trying to get my attention.
The owner just stood there.
Then when I went downstairs and was working out at least 4 patrons tried to make sly remarks and get my attention.
I brushed one off and ignored the other three as if they were children.
They actually seemed to be lifting like children by the amount of weight they were using, lol.
Seems like the employee is getting creepier every time I visit the gym.
He seems to be subtle and indirect but extremely disturbed in his attempts to distract.
I suggest we all pray for him but give him no further energy.
It's like a child doing anything to get attention.
Let us all pray brethren.

Here’s your warning - if you join and try to cancel, they won’t actually cancel your membership and will keep charging you indefinitely.
Dealing with my bank now and it’s just a hassle for no reason…..
Furthermore the guy who works at night blasts music and dances around not working. He was the original person I asked to cancel who just didn’t.
Edit: I was charged for two months after I canceled. Because of my review they finally actually cancelled my membership. With that said I was still only refunded for one month that I overpaid. Still wouldn’t recommend this place but if you do need to cancel, do it through Mike because he’ll actually cancel it.

Retro is a great gym. The gym being in a work neighborhood instead of a residential area makes for great times where it seems to be almost like your own private gym during the right hours. The new young staff are very friendly and are happy to be there. Mike is a generous person with his time sharing his knowledge of body building. I’ve been coming here most weekdays for about 2 months. This gym has everything you need. Great selection of free weights, there’s strength training racks, a functional fitness area, and so many machines that I’ve only tried a third of them.
The bathrooms are well kept and I always use the showers at the end of my workouts. No lines for the facilities and they have towels/shampoo/shower gel at the ready.
Come and see Mike when you arrive. He’s the best. No matter how rough im feeling in the morning, seeing his consistency reminds me I can make it. You just gotta show up

Huge space, two floors, with a big variety in equipment. Great price and kept clean. Honestly, all I need in a gym! Spoke to one of the personal trainers at length about my goals and am getting started with a tailored plan at a pretty reasonable price. I was pleasantly surprised at the cost of training sessions when they told me. I get my daily workout smoothies from the front desk there too before going into work. “Worst salesmen ever!” I had this kid with pimples on his face at the front desk and try to sell me the subscription. And he compelled blew the sale, I was the most hot and ready lead. I came in ready to buy and I left with nothing. After an hour!!! Of him “running the numbers” and “checking management” then “calling the supervisor” he finally gave me the iPad to sign up. I was halfway done and then he took it away and called someone else and offered me a plan a didn’t want and how the plan I originally wanted was gone. I left in that moment and I was 30 seconds away from finishing the form and signing up. I wanted to pay in ful and upfront and even called before going to see if they had a deal. The said yes and to come in, and I left with nothing. I can’t believe me wouldn’t sell me the program. I was ready to buy and anybody could have closed me in 5 minutes. No wonder the gym has 3 stars, it all starts with the front desk.

UPDATE: welp, like others, I need to cancel my membership as I'm no longer in the area. NY law put in effect states gyms must provide an easy way for members to cancel such as online, and not require in person cancelation. Retro is still requiring members to talk to the never-there manager. I'll be disputing charges and contacting a lawyer soon to discuss class action if this keeps up. The review below about the spac/staff stands, as long as you're a member, just know you can't get out.
===========
Review from 2yrs ago:
Nice sized gym in the basement floor. Note that this means no windows, if that's important to you. 2 floors make up this facility which is of pretty ample size, giving it a more varied and spread out feel. I mainly go off-peak, so it's never been crowded for me. Given the good variety of equipment, generally clean and maintained, I'd say this is an excellent value for money. As with every gym I've been at, needs more cable carabiners, and fewer guys who think they're strongmen but never strong enough to rerack their weights.

They are stealing people's money. In March 2020 I called the front desk of Retro Fitness to cancel my account. The manager (Carol) was trying to persuade me to not cancel the account and freeze it instead until June 2021. I froze the account and put a reminder to call them in June. In June, I called the front desk again to freeze the account until September 2021 (the date that I was supposed to return back to the office at 1NYP) and spoke with Carol who she confirmed it. In July and August I noticed 2 charges in my AMEX statements and I immediately called Retro Fitness. Everyone was saying that only the manager could help me with that and the manager was never there, every time I used to call them. I disputed the charges on AMEX. in September I called them to cancel and again the manager was never there ever time I called. One of the representatives I spoke with, assured me that will pass the information to the manager and cancel the account. He said "you should expect an email". I never received an email. I keep getting emails from ABC Financials to pay the Retro Fitness balance. Today, January 11th, I called the front desk and I spoke with Carol (Manager). I asked her to cancel the account and she said that they cannot cancel the account if there is a balance. The balance reflects to fees for the dispute. I told her that we had spoken in June and that she froze the account and she said we never spoke together on the phone and that I never called in June and that the account was active. After that she asked me to wait on hold and was waiting for six minutes. I called again and she was very rude ignoring my questions while she was talking to other people. I couldn't believe that there are people that are called managers and they represent a gym located in a nice building with many top professionals being members of it. Such a bad customer service. Carol is very unprofessional and rude. I saw that there are other bad reviews about her in Google. I DON'T KNOW IF THE MANAGER IS JUST UNPROFESSIONAL OR RETRO FITNESS WANT TO STEAL MONEY.
UPDATE 1/13/2022: I received a phone call from the manager Mrs. Carol this morning. She asked me to delete my google review and if I delete it they will waive the late fees (that I was never aware of or ever reflected in my account - see screenshot) and pay will have to pay only $17. I was asked to pay $27 and on 1/11/2020 in order to cancel my account and today they said I will have to pay $90+ if I don't delete my Google review.

I've only been to two Retro Fitness locations (here and Hoboken), but this gym is by far the nicer of the two. The staff seem quite friendly, the downstairs is very spacious with plenty of lifting equipment, and the gym is not crowded in the morning (around 8:30am to 9:30am), which is fantastic for someone like me who wants to work out before heading to the office. I think the lack of crowds may be partially due to people still not coming into the office because of Covid, so perhaps that could change in the future. But for now, this gym is very solid, especially for its price.

I have been trying to deal with this issues for more than 2 months and can't get a single person to help me. Was a very happy member of the club until this issue arose, and now the customer service or lack thereof is completely unacceptable and some of the worst I have experienced, including from the club itself, which I have called multiple times but no one seems to be able to help. I would give this Gym 0 stars. The "manager" told me that if I don't remove this review, she will not help me . 4 weeks since that, she has not taken my calls, or called me back despite the front desk people saying she will surely call back and get your "sorted".
They have the worst facilities, and the gym "Manager" is the most rude arrogant person I have ever communicated with. The equipments are old and not cleaned.S he forgot to cancel my membership despite calling thrice and 1.5 years later I got a call from the collections dept saying I owe them money. Unprofessional manager by the name of Carol to resolved the matter. She said that the Corporate office sent memo which I never received. I spoke with Jason at retro corporate said that was not true. All letters should have come from Carol at One Plaza. I had Covid and I’m still suffering from side effects. I offer to send Carol a letter and was told not to bother. I have been going to this gym for years and it is a well maintained franchise (you have to set your expectations based on that). The good thing is that they have free weights and the fees are reasonable. The manager Carol is always friendly and accommodating as is the staff in general. It is kept very clean. However, as is typical for this franchise they seem to have to play music (not a bad selection), but my only complaint is it can be a bit loud and unnecessary since most people wear headphones. Another issue with this club is it is very hot in the summer at times (a common issue with Retro Fitness--most likely having to do with the franchise rules). If they could add another station with bumper plates and another cage that would be great as I never use Smith racks.

I called to cancel my membership but the manager Carol was very abrupt in her answers and sounded like she just wanted to get the call over with. I could tell that the more questions I asked the more ticked off she sounded. And also she wasn't helpful in explaining why the membership fee still needed to be paid.
The gym itself has a variety of machines and an open space which is decent. Customer service definitely needs to be better. I really wouldn’t recommend this gym because of this.

Like many others here who have cancelled their memberships - there is an experience outside of the gym waiting for you if God forbid you move away and can not use the gym anymore.
I have not been to this gym in OVER ONE YEAR, after CANCELLING my membership THREE TIMES before that, and I STILL get charged for a membership. I don’t know if perhaps they just pass the phone around to whoever is going to be the manager that day, but each one I’ve spoken to has been ineffective, and possibly just deceitful, about cancelling my membership and ending charges on a gym I no longer live in the same state as. Cancelling the credit card they charge doesn’t work either - they will send a collections agency to bother you and shake you down for money - money I need to live. Absolute scammy behavior from a business I used to enjoy and be proud to be a client of. I no longer recommend this gym to the large group of people I am connected with in the area.
Please, please, save yourself the time and the money and find a gym that is run by professionals who are honest and competent enough to know that a cancelled gym membership does not mean you can continue charging people after you have terminated their contract. It’s not this one.
If you still need a NYC gym because home gyms are difficult for the type of apartments you have, church street boxing is far superior from my experience, and I have not had a single issue from them since I’ve cancelled my membership with them after moving. While they may not be as equipment focused, their class plan and customer service are far superior.
While this gym may be nice while you’re a member, it’s going to be an absolute pain once you leave. Maybe leaving a nasty review like this, the first I ever have done, will get them to stop STEALING from me every month. Maybe it’s reporting these charges as fraudulent - which they are. Maybe calling the agency that charges me on this firm’s behalf once a month will finally end this theft. Hopefully something will stop these charges before everybody who is being scammed decides to do something about it together.
Be warned - multiple people are stating that you will be charged after you cancel - even if it’s three times. Manager/owner, if you’re reading this, please fix this reoccurring issue for everyone before it hurts your business. I genuinely enjoyed your gym while I was a member. I can’t see myself returning after this massive headache - even if I am somehow still paying for it.

The gym itself is great, including the staff. Wide assortment of equipment that's kept clean. The gym rules for exercising and maintaining social distancing are clearly posted everywhere, however my big issue is with members blatantly breaking the rules with zero regard for staff or othe members. Construction boots, jeans, not wearing masks properly, not wiping down equipment or re-racking weights are some of the more annoying rules that should be simple to follow. These are sporadic incidents and I'm just bunching them up. Overall, the gym does have a great vibe, and professional staff always willing to help when needed. I'm currently appreciating the lack of crowded gym so I can workout in the shadows away from everyone.

The lady at the front desk has an unwelcoming and unpleasant attitude towards people with memberships and people attempting the day pass.
Very unwelcoming, very unappreciated.
The gym is OK. It looks like Ronald Macdonald threw up on every machine, everything is yellow and red. It's underground so no natural lighting.
The machines are interesting. To add weight on the pulling machines it's a switch but the numbers aren't next to the switch so you waste time having to make sure you flick the right switch for the correct weight.
They have a boxing bag which is nice.
Decent machines.
But the unpleasant woman at the front desk, the non existent natural lighting, the shoddy looking equipment(check out their kettle bells, and attachments to the pulling machines) , and cramped feeling (short roof) make it a gym I would go to if I had no where else to go to and if outdoor park gyms did not exist.
It's a good gym for the winter and if nothing else is around. :)

Gym was fine for what it was, was disappointed because I went in to sign up for the buy one get one free membership deal. They told me I could sign up and that the other person can just come in for their membership at a later date. I brought my friend the same week to a different location and they said I had to bring him to the original location. No problem, the next week we went to the original location and they said they could no longer honor the original deal. They said they would talk to corporate to see if they could do anything to rectify the situation, despite number follow ups they never reached out once or answered any e-mail sent. Every time I showed up or called they would kick the can down the road and say they were looking into it. Eventually they said they weren't going to honor to original deal. Pretty disappointing management. Also, every time I asked for a towel I received one I wouldn't want to wash my floors with let alone my body, they were often stained and crusty. For starting at $20 a month I wasn't expecting much, but honesty and integrity were free so I thought those would be included.

Good place to train when it's empty or moderately full..... being that the weights are in the basement, it gives this location a gritty feel. Star Trak equipment takes a little getting used to, but after the learning curve, it's actually good equipment

I tried this place out last night as a guest. I had full access to the entire club. Let me just say that this is by far one of the most amazing gyms I have been to in years! All of the equipment what is in Tip-Top shape, they even had old fashioned equipment. The place was very clean and the people or other members were very friendly. I am currently a member at Planet Fitness and my membership expires in a month. As soon as that takes effect I will be purchasing my monthly membership with Retro Fitness. I look forward to progressing and maintaining my physique with Retro Fitness. Highly recommended! I even saw signs throughout the club that if you recommend a friend or anyone that signs up to the gym, you get a free month! You can refer up to 6 members and receive up to 6 months free. This is amazing! I'll probably be paying double hear what I pay for my black card with Planet Fitness but it's totally worth it.

Facilities were fine when I went here, but this review is entirely based on their cancellation process. No way to cancel online or via phone despite moving out of state and making several phone calls and talks to managers. Was told by one of their associates that I could send an email to a designated email address and they'd process the cancellation but the email bounced and further associates have said there is no such approach. Extremely aggravating to have to send in a certified letter by mail just to say I want to cancel, with no guarantee of when they will actually receive or process the cancellation.

Retro Fitness at One NY Plaza is an absolutely wonderful place to train and exercise. The facility is spacious and spotlessly clean.
The staff there are very cordial and friendly. I have not taken any of the classes offered at this location, however every single afternoon that I come in to workout during my lunch hour, the gym is never over crowded and the machines are always functional and clean.
Their towel service is also a great amenity that is offered.
In the two years I have been exercising here, I don't think I have ever seen a machine broken. That goes to show how great the staff is in running this gym.
Highly recommend Retro Fitness One NY Plaza to anyone looking for a place to workout.

Probably the worst retro fitness I’ve ever had the pleasure of visiting.
Not only are the locker rooms overcrowded, often times the toilets are annihilated and out of service. Even the MTA has better toilet/customer ratios.
The locker room equipment is subpar and frequently not in working order. In addition, you have to haggle at the front desk to get weight clips. In addition, the hours are only attend-able for someone employed by the local library. By no means a proper fit for a young professional employed in manhattan.
A personal training session I was offered upon signing up never materialized. And do not rely on the front desk staff to be knowledge of the contracts you are signing up for. Every answer I received for my questions in regards to the membership ran contrary to the actual details of the contract.
Lastly, good luck ever getting in contact with them. I have moved away from any reasonable radius and have been unsuccessful in many attempts to contact to initiate the cancelation of membership.
Only get a membership if you need to fool yourself and those around you by finally being able to claim you belong to a “gym”.

The overall gym is fine. (Please scroll down for my updates).
Last update: It took 7 weeks but they finally issued a refund.
But my goodness, management and the employees are incompetent. I started off my membership at the Williamsburg Retro (better, bigger, etc.). However, once I moved out of the Williamsburg area and started using this location more, Retro Fitness transferred my entire membership to this location. So, when I went to cancel in person (to the new location) about 2 months prior to my year end membership, the gym employee said I was already cancelled. Great, I thought - easy. Indeed, I had paperwork from their online finance company stating the same thing, that my membership was cancelled. However, they incorrectly told me this apparently, as they were reading my membership information from the Williamsburg gym. Little did I know, they cancelled my old membership and gave me a "new" membership with a "new" contract number. When I explained this to the incompetent and rude manager, she yelled at me and said that I had to read the terms of the contract. I'm an attorney, and I explained the situation, and said that I was never given a new contract or contract number and she said that wasn't her problem. Eventually, after some back and forth, she acquiesced and told me she'd provide a refund. It has now been weeks of waiting for a refund for the gym (was told 3-5 business days). The only good thing I can say, is that it's cheap and so if this happens to you, it's not a lot of money, but it is the principle. They seemingly do not care about their customers.
Carol, please process my refund. When you tell me to refer to the steps laid out in my contract, please be advised that you have not provided a contract to me, despite my plea on the phone when we spoke.
Update a week later: Still no refund. I have called the front desk several times today, and both times they have told me that the manager is busy, and that by the end of the business day they would get back in touch. This was a lie. It's now COB and still no word from the manager after my second call. The front desk associate basically laughs when I ask what I have to do to get a call from the manager. If you value decent business practices, steer clear - they're immoral.
Update two weeks later: Still no refund. The front desk assistant, Isiah, who I am now on a first name basis with, laughs when he says he's relaying my messages to the manager who is never at her desk or is constantly on another line. I've asked to wait, or for a call back, and I get nothing. The level of disrespect at this location is appalling. Have another gym steal your money, because this place will do it and laugh at you.
Update 8 weeks later - Finally issued refund. Feel like I need a cigarette after getting it.

No frills gym with tons of space and equipment. If you're looking for a club like experience to be a part of the 'scene', this isn't it. This by far is the worst managed gym in the country! The staff is completely incompetent. Don't believe what they say about the month-to-month membership. They will overcharge your credit card and make it completely impossible to cancel your membership. In addition, they will try to charge you extra fees for towel service, so watch what they charge your card.
You will then be harassed day and night by ABC Financial looking for past dues.Don't ever expect a call back from the membership team, a woman named Carol or the franchise owner, they will do whatever it takes to avoid you from cancelling ad trying to keep collecting monthly fees. I've been trying to cancel my account since June. Corporate is of no help, they will point you back to the back to the franchise. It's the biggest scam ever. In addition, the club isn't very clean, too cramped, has a terrible layout and poor ventilation. The locker rooms are kind of shady, be careful. You will also get proposition every day by trainers looking to sell you training sessions, they keep asking you every day, it's disturbing and ruins the rhythm of your workout. It's a failing franchise that's understaffed. Your better off joining one of the clubs across the street. AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS!!!! The response listed below from the owner is bull sheet. I can't begin to tell you how many calls and e-mails I sent, I even visited the club on numerous occasions, they've perfected the stall technique so they can continue to milk you for monthly fees. Trust me, join any other gym but this one, the location is the worst, and you will be stalked by trainers looking for you to spend hundreds of dollars on one-on-one sessions. Bottom line is this is a failing location with management issues, gym is cramped and not clean.

This gym is ok compared to others. Half of the machines are broken and it gets too crowded to get a good workout in. The only good employee was Alex, who is no longer there.
I was a member here for 2 years because of the convenience in walking there straight after work. However, my membership ended in June 2018 and I had requested a membership cancellation back in March 2018 in person with one of the employees, since they secretly request that you give a two months notice. And just FYI, there is no cancellation fee once you’ve reached your year term. Two months later I was still seeing charges on my card, I emailed and called and did not receive a response. I had no choice but to call my credit card company, which is only a short term solution. I went back in person to speak with the manager Carol Lorde. She tried to tell me I would probably be responsible for some of the charges (which I should not, given there is no cancellation fee for me), but that she would look into it and give me a call. I never received one and instead received a letter from a credit collecting company.
Do not waste your time at this place unless you plan to make a life commitment with them. My membership was paid on time every single month for the two years, I was a faithful customer and now 6 months later I am dealing with issues with them. It’s ridiculous. I would give no stars if I could.

I would give negative stars if I could. Two months later and I'm still trying to cancel. I'm actually impressed by how well they're running their scam. Well, not that impressed considering how obvious it is. I tried to follow their expressly written contract terms by sending in a letter requesting cancellation, and the specified club address on the contract is not even a real address and gets sent back. After finding the actual address it still gets sent back to me because the letter is not deliverable to that address (I posted the photos). Blatant and purposeful misrepresentation. I try calling the club to speak to Carol, and she's never there. In her reply to my previous yelp review she said she would be in contact, yeah that never happened.
Considering that Carol personally called me after I left a bad review because of a confusion over their holiday hours to explain the confusion and get me to take my review down, I'm amazed that this current situation hasn't been resolved yet. You know why? Because they know exactly what they're doing.
Do not ever sign up with this gym. You might try to actually adhere to the terms you sign but they will not adhere to the written terms just to squeeze $20 a month from you. They don't seem to understand that in contract law a party can't just make unilateral oral stipulations not specified in the written contract after the written contract has been signed. Carol, I swear if you respond to this with some variation of "We're sorry for the misunderstanding/confusion" I'm going to lose it. This is neither of those things, it's intentional. You know it, and so do we.
I'm reporting them to the DCA. I suggest others do the same.
