The gym is great and all but a trainer named Angelo flirts with his clients. First time I met him he was flirting with me. Try to get in my pants. I let it slide a couple times because every time he would train his clients, he would wink at me or flirt with me. I got tired of it and I said please stop flirting with me. Do you like me or something? He got mad and said no he wasn’t flirting, even though he was. And every time I come here he gives me evil looks . I noticed every time he’s trying to train his clients He flirts with them and trying to make me jealous. I don’t even know why they hired him . He has favorites of his clients.

This is a pretty good gym, enough weights, enough racks. only 2 complaints:

1) music is too loud:
Everyone has headphones there’s no reason to be blasting katy perry

2) parking lot is insane:
I take my life into my hands driving down lawson bvld into the lot which is always full and exiting the lot into oncoming traffic which is hard to see.

Protip: park a few blocks earlier and just walk a bit.

I really enjoy the workouts here, and my trainer Jen is fantastic. The gym itself is clean and well-equipped, but the parking is a major issue! I’ve often had to wait 15–20 minutes to find a spot. It takes away from an otherwise great experience. If the parking situation improved, I’d happily recommend this place without hesitation.

Tiny gym in the middle of nowhere, only 3 benches, feels like everyone's on top of you that's how small the place is. The staff is unprofessional and too busy socializing/phone instead of being courteous and providing good service, most seem like just
extended family members instead of actual qualified workers. I'm stuck going here for now due to it being close to my work but will be looking for other options soon. After going to other gyms I realized how unwelcoming and unprofessional this gym was so dropped the rate to 1 star. and I still can't forget how small it is. This gym has toxic atmosphere. I don't understand why anyone would spend their money to go to a place like this!

This gym was nice for the first month when it reopened. Now it’s dirty, machines are broken that don’t get fixed, and the bathrooms are disgusting. The women’s bathroom especially only one sink works and one of the stalls have been out of order for months. The soap dispenser is never filled, and theres a leak in the ceiling. There’s no parking and parking lawfully isn’t enforced so it’s extremely dangerous to pull out of the parking lot. If there was another gym nearby I’d be switching.

Very disappointed with the personal training program here. Be very weary if signing up for personal training at this location. At the end of what was supposed to be a 1 hour fitness consultation, trainer Aaron asked me to sign up for a program with him outside of the gym - ON TOP OF what the gym charges for personal training. So on top of the hourly rate for personal training through Retro Fitness...the trainers ask you to pay them separately and directly through their own "personal businesses." It should also be noted that Aaron showed up 16 minutes late for our "first session" and complained about his salary the entire time. When it was time to sign me up for a package, he harassed me via text to send pictures of my credit card to this PERSONAL cell phone, which I obviously did not feel comfortable doing. Very, very sketchy person. If this is the caliber of trainers at Retro Fitness, I would run - not walk - far, far away. I will certainly be canceling my membership immediately and going to a gym where the staff doesn't verbally harass you for not sending photos of your credit cards to their PERSONAL cell phones.

Didn’t realize that they had the renovated Retro Fitness so close to home and in Nassau. I have been driving out to Elwood to go to the newer facilities but this one is 10 mins from home. It is a hidden gem and a great place to workout at. Never have to weight for equipment and everything is new and clean. Only flaw is the parking can be limited but not enough to deduct a star imo. Cancelled all my other gym memberships after attending this one.

CHARGED MONTHLY 2 YEARS AFTER CANCELLATION

I moved 2 years ago. I spoke to the then manager, Bruce, who informed me my account was cancelled. I just discovered it was not, and I've been getting billed monthly since then. I tried to speak to the current manager who informed me she was sorry but could not refund me. Maybe you'll save a few bucks going with Retro, but you will be sorry in the long term.

Today without any alerts or warning they just didn’t open. No posts on socials, email, etc. Others showed up this morning and said that they do this pretty often - just decide to open an hour or two later than we pay for with no warning. Extremely unprofessional and unacceptable. One time is understandable but as it seems to be a regular thing - not worth the frustration and not okay.

Not super impressed with this Retro Fitness anymore, or their affiliation with ABC Financial. I'm only here to use the studio space, and now with classes, that access is limited. I fully support group fitness classes, but when you have only 1 participant in the class, and several people wanting to use that space, it's time to consider what's best for the majority of your members . In addition, I spent over half an over on the phone with ABC Financial simply trying to update my payment information. What a joke.

Horrible gym, equipment is usually broken and the gym is filthy. Allegedly, corporate cut back on spending money to pay for people to clean the gym.

On my last day, I had the most unprofessional experience ever from the new general manager (erica--I think) and kat after corporate took over this location.

There was a new general manager and a person named "kat" at the front desk , and since corporate took over, I politely went to the desk and asked the general manager if the theater room was in a different air conditioner zone because it has been quite cold in there lately. The general manager in long sleeve heavy shirt smiles and says that she's comfortable and something to the effect that it's too bad she wouldn't do anything about it. Then, without hesitation kat decides to chime in stating that there is nothing they will do and that corporate has set the temperature across all their gyms. I said, "so if that's the new policy, I can't workout here anymore and will find a new gym". The general manager than said for me: yes, find another gym.
I then walked away to finish my workout and one of them shouts out: "sorry bout that with a laugh". Now, this conversation was already finished and I was at about 40 feet away. I turned and asked why she would continue to provoke the situation with a sarcastic and insincere comment like that. Then, the general manager decided to walk to me and get in my face in a threatening manner, offering more disrespectful comments. I told her to leave me alone and get away and that i was not there to talk to her, but to workout. I couldn't believe the anger in her face and then she and kat yelled at me to leave the gym while attempting to further embarrass me in front of many people present.
I already called corporate to review the video footage of their disrespectful and threatening manner which clearly shows two angry "females- i think" trying to bully, intimidate, and embarrass a disabled 48 year old man of shorter stature.
All i can say is, if a man (or two men) did this to a woman, he'd be in jail, sued, and cancel-cultured; as I could see many of the men looking at me ready to support these persons-- however, the truth is now told.

Update: Apparently upper management doesn't care and they are still billing me.

Worst experience at all. Management rude and absolutely bullying. He clearly bypass the franchising procedures (for guests). I was with my son, appropriate age, that I registered at my first visit, and even after I had provided the birth certificate, Manager told that I was not a legal guardian, because my son hadn't my last name, as his last name. Even my son having my last name as his MIDDLE name What'ssssssss????
He probably doesn't like our type of middle names and last names, and had created this embarrassed situation to get ride of us. He got it!!! Good job!

The negative reviews I see here are may be people that have had a rough day. I can say I am in range of three retro fitness gyms and this is the cleanest. Weights are placed where it needs to be. It was a pleasure meeting the owner well rounded guy.

The gym should be a safe space to clear mind and meet goals but my interaction with the gym's staff made me feel uncomfortable and degraded today. Here's how my visit went.....

I Went to this gym for the first time to spend time with my brother. The girl at the desk was really nice and helped show us how to complete the guest waiver. I walked in workout bag in hand to the weight area, placing my bag and hoodie near the workout bench I occupied . 15 minutes later i was approached by a male who DID NOT introduce himself but proceeded to yell at me for placing my gym bag on the floor. As I tried to process his attitude and manner I stared at him for a few seconds . In no way am i making this racial but i am a black woman. For a person to immediately address with me attitude is as if it was an expectation that an attitude would reciprocate. He continued to yell at me with an Attitude as if I couldn't not comprehend his instructions to either put the bag in a locker or up front. His tone and manners made me feel uncomfortable and I repeated his request so that he can understand that I heard him clear enough . I said okay without confrontation and he said Thank you very much in the most loud condescending way. I felt embarrassed but I continued to workout to finish my session . Had this "individual" who did not introduce himself as an owner or manager, introduce himself and explain to me the rules and ask for me to place it in a safe location i would have just said no problem and apologized. I had no lock and was unaware of this gym's rules so I took my bag to the front and explained to the girl at the desk what had transpired and asked if should kindly keep my bag upfront until I finished my workout. I was able to confine my workout for 20 more minutes and I just wanted to leave. I left feeling very disrespected and I would not recommend this gym to anyone unless you want to feel like the gum under your shoe. My safe space was overpowered by someone who does not know how to treat his clients with respect and has no desire to neither . Prior poor reviews seem to carry this gym's credibility to the ground. What should have been a good day at the gym with my brother turned into one of the worst experiences in my life in a gym. I have no desire to return no worries but I will leave this with intention to protect other people from encountering this man at the gym. He's located in the office next to the desk.

Recently moved back to the area after getting out of the military, this gym aside from being clean and organized has been nothing but terrible. Every time you walk in its like you’re in a bad episode of Euphoria. People hog the machines and are more focused on being on their phones than actually working out. The gym is small and already limited to their equipment and benches. Today though, i had 35 pounds on the seated chest press and let the weights down to where it made a noise. Not a slam. A gentleman from management felt the need to come over to me and let me know not to slam the weights becuase i was going to “break a screw in the platform” in a condescending tone. All in all who am i to argue but if your equipment is going to break because of 35lbs i rather not workout there at all and i dont need someone breathing down my neck as i workout. If you’re serious about fitness and working towards your goals and value your time, i suggest going elsewhere. This place is a joke. Not worth the money. Its an off brand planet fitness.

AVOID THIS GYM

I signed up for a membership and after my workout requested to upgrade my membership. Julie was working the front (apparently a manager) and told me that she couldn't do it from her computer. She wrote a phone number on a piece of paper and advised to me to call and cancel the membership "under a 3 day clause" (which doesn't exist) and than resign up the next day.

I followed her guidance, and when I went back in she told me I couldn't work out that day and had no answer as to why. I told her I did what she said, I can just re sign up. She told me not to sign back up, she isn't sure why the computer wouldn't allow me in. I called later that day to get some answers and she still had none. I called in the evening and spoke to Lee the evening manager who told me that "because the membership was cancelled so quick, I was banned from the gym". I obviously told him what the morning manager had advised me to do, and he said he would talk to the owner. I called day after day trying to see when this would be resolved. The owner was never available to speak to me. They eventually started ignoring my calls. I went in to speak to the owner in person, but he wouldn't come speak with me. They told me he would call me. They told me that daily.

I still haven't heard from them, its been 3 weeks. Luckily I was able to call the billing company and recoup a full reimbursement, but we aware this business has predatory practices to snake people out of money. Im not surprised they are F rated on the BBB and not accredited. With owners who cant handle issues like adults, and employees who have no accountability, im surprised its still in business. Save yourself the stress, go elsewhere. Plenty of local options with better staff and equipment.

I’ve had a membership at this gym for over a year. August I had disputed my credit card for an unrelated unauthorized transaction in which a new replacement card was sent to me. While the new card was in transit, my old account was unsuccessful billed for the gym membership. I also contracted COVID which is why never updated my new info immediately. Once I realized what happened, I called the gym to reverse the $20 late fee, I was informed by Bruce to come in to see him or Julie and “they’d take care of it for me”. I came in last Saturday and the payment management company was closed but was instructed by Julie (she was wonderful) that the owner overheard our conversation and insisted that I needed a letter from the bank to waive the fee. I reached to the credit card company and they didn’t have the ability to do this so I printed out the transaction history of the dispute with corresponding dates into the club but the owner still rejected my best efforts.

This is inexcusable and really customer poor service. What am I, a child that need a note from my parents at 55 years old??? It’s not like this has happened previously and not once did they make an effort to reach out to me make me apprised there was a problem with account.

Terrible management. This must be an independently owned franchise cause they give me a hard time everytime I try to go there. I have been to 8 different retro fitnesses no problem. This place I have to fill out a long waiver and contract everytime I go in there. The parking lot is terribly small. The only one that asks to see my vaccine status so annoying because this place is the most filthy out of all the gyms I've been to. Nobody wipes down the equipment after there done. U can feel other people's sweat on your hands when u use anything. The front desk people are not friendly at all. And my friend never leaves his house for anything work shopping all from home. Joined this gym when it first opened, took some time away and went back. The gym is close to home so it works well when pressed for time but for serious lifters it has plenty of faults. Water fountains barely drip out and the water is warm so don’t count on refilling your water (which I have put on multiple reviews sent from retro and brought up to staff since they opened). There is only one actual squat rack so prepare to wait on leg day unless you use a smith machine which there are multiple of. I have yet to deadlift there since my return but if it’s anything like when it first opened I should bring a pillow because any clanking what so ever is apparently the end of the world. The hours are the worst out of any gym I have ever gone to. I will say that the front staff has always been nice and the gym is clean. This gym has so much potential but I feel like there is a huge management issue holding it back. The owner needs to step back and listen to his employees. I have never had a bad experience with front desk staff but the owner is a whole different story. I try to avoid times he is most likely to be there. Luckily I have never had any major issues with the man but I have seen him get rather disrespectful and have had him be disrespectful to friends over small things. I wouldn’t say avoid this gym at all cost but if you are serious about working out and want a place where you can do your planned workout without violating a rule or having to wait on certain limited equipment I’d strongly consider looking elsewhere.

I have been going to this gym for 3 years. Staff is polite and helpful. Facility is clean and exercise equipment always maintained. This gym is COVID safe , all precautions in place.

I was lost! I was out of shape! My belly was so big i once turned around and my belly pushed someone out i to traffic by mistake while we were waiting for green light! He didnt stand a chance! Everyone looking at me while im holding hot dog! It was a real bottom ill never forget! I joined retro and bye bye belly! I turn around now and everyone survives! Thanks retro!

Went to retro yesterday to check out the gym as I am looking to join up and they are part of my jobs corporate discount program. Only to be given a nickel tour.. I was told they do not participate in my jobs discount plan.. was not offered a free workout even though there were only 3 people in the gym.. I will be taking my business elsewhere

Great gym however they unfroze my account during the Covid shutdown and never told me, when I asked them to refreeze the account they refused and threatened to put me in collections for $90 so I paid them and cancelled my account. Their billing and customer service is horrendous. They just lost a loyal customer over $90 avoid them!!!

In all this craziness this year, I returned to Retro Fitness several weeks ago, I feel safe there, masks are enforced and machines wiped frequently! My wife misses the classes, but hopefully they'll be back in the future.

It's an ok gym, but after 2 weeks of going here was told I can't come here anymore because they wouldn't say, so I find out a female assumed I took a picture of her when I was taking a picture of myself to show my results in my fb & gram account through the time I have been doing my workout and now I have to contact corporate to discuss this matter. So this is why I give it a 1 star, they assumed incimorrectly and never spoke to me about it I had to find out via my main gym and explain what happened and was told why didnt they advise you of the incident which they thought was explained to me, and was not, so thanks mgmt lee cox for withholding this info and not looking further into the situation before making a final decision. And thanks retro employee who assumed I took a picture of her which I did not, I remember the day cuz she walked past as I was taking the selfie, trust me it wasn't of your provocative outfit I was looking to snap, if your concern is of ppl taking pictures then you should look in the mirror and see how your dressed and notice your showing more than you should but none the less it's wasnt a picture if you I have seen better I was posting pics of myself. So thanks retro for losing a member because of one of your employees inappropriate dress attire.

I really enjoy attending the Retro Fitness Center in Oceanside because it's a very clean gym with a comfortable atmosphere. The staff, trainers, and gym attendants are friendly. The gym is never overcrowded and no immature people to disrupt your workout flow. I highly recommend this location to anyone living in the same or neighboring towns. Keep up the good work!

Wanted to do something nice for my office staff. They have been talking about joining the gym for sometime. When I got the email BOGO (buy one get one) I sent them to the Lawson blvd location with my corporate card. They refused to honor the deal sent to me even after they were showed the email. This is not a legit place. I let corporate know but they did not even care. People spend your money elsewhere. I was embarrassed having sent them there then I thought to myself that it is management at the gym that should be embarrassed. GO TO NY SPORTS INSTEAD

I have been going to gym's for a very long time and never felt so unappreciated and disrespected from the owner of this gym. Very rude to people and a bully. I have literally watched him yell at people in the parking lot and speak to members with a condescending tone. I prefer to go to a gym where I can actually speak freely with staff and feel like an important guest. Rather here at this Retro Fitness you are only spoken to nicely until there is an issue or problem. I left this gym and happy at my new gym. Unfortunately the owners attitude will not change and he will never apologize for how he behaves.

As the previous owner of multiple gyms (Gold's) I can honestly say that my experience/workout in Retro, Oceanside this morning was great! The facility is well equipped, impeccably maintained, organized, extremely clean, and the staff was professional and friendly. I met the owner and he too was very friendly and personable.
Keeping a facility like this the way he has should be commended. It is impossible to please everyone, but that said, his gym looks like he tries. I say if you're looking for a good place to get a great workout hit Retro, you won't be disappointed.

This gym is absolutely run by horrible individuals. My family has been members from the very beginning and love coming here, but unfortunately it is run by terrible individuals with no sense of community. DO NOT JOIN, WASTE OF MONEY and ZERO RESPECT FOR PEOPLE. The manger here has not idea how to run a business, look at their terrible yelp reviews. I love this location, there’s a closer retro Fitness to my house but I decide to drive 10 minutes more because of the service, clean equipment and the overall vibe. The staff are always friendly. One time I forgot my membership card the girl in the front recognized me by name and last name. Amazing gym.

I've been to almost every retro fitness on Long Island, Oceanside is by far the Worst retro fitness on Long Island, The owner runs this place like a crazed dictator. Only retro that you can't check yourself in, there's always new employees because once they find out how he is and how the place is run they leave. Completely overboard with all the dumb rules. The water fountains barely trickle out, you literally have to stick your mouth on the spout to get any water, and it's been like that for over a year. Only one big main mirror , I'm sure he doesn't want to install anymore because he
doesn't want to spend any money. Ohh and did I talk about the parking it's terrible! You can almost never get a spot to park,I if you're lucky to find the spot it's on the other side of Lawson boulevard and you have to risk your life running across the street when cars a flying down going 60 miles an hour, There are many better retro fitness on the Island, don't go to this one!

I recently joined and I can't say enough how happy I am that I did. Julie at the front desk is the perfect person to represent your gym. Very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. I think the gym is fantastic with different machines and free weights. I want to start my new journey of not only rehabbing a back problem but moving forward to start a new regiment of working all body parts. It's clean compared to some other gyms and I recommend anyone looking for a gym.
