The Floor is a movement studio and community space in Brooklyn, we offer mat based classes in Pilates and Self Care. Our studios offer space for artists and independent movement instructors. The Floor also hosts ongoing Book Discussions, Workshops, an Artist in Residency Program and Instructor Cooperative.
Our philosophy is to provide support to better care for one another.

The Floor is a truly magical studio and I wouldn't do Pilates anywhere else.
Before I met Jamie and tried her class at The Floor, I was scared to do Pilates in NYC because the studios I walked past usually seemed competitive, intense, and well... cliquey (basically exactly like the SNL skit).
The Floor is the THE EXACT OPPOSITE of that—Jamie's classes are incredibly welcoming, grounded, fun, and HARD.
Jamie pays incredible attention to each person's needs and body, no matter what their experience or ability. She cues things in a way that means I have FINALLY found my butt after years of confusion, and somehow manages to be serious/light/exacting/forgiving all at the same time.
I walk out of every class feeling so much more capable in my body and in my life. It's like medicine or witchcraft or something. Try it!

There is one problem with The Floor: it will spoil you forever. Jamie Dowd is unparalleled in her attention to anatomy, making personalized adjustments throughout class and queueing movements and postures in an exacting (yet approachable) manner. To say this studio is a place you come to work out is an understatement. It's a beautiful haven with wonderful people brought to you by the best teacher and founder. Jamie has helped my body rebound and recover from so much over the years; trauma, postpartum, the pandemic!, and the standard 9 hours of sitting at your desk.
Her practice is nothing like other studios I've been to. Her form of pilates mat is clear, functional, thoughtful, and challenging. It's made me stronger. Jamie is so incredibly gifted at teaching and it shows in her cues and her attention to movement. My body completely changed because of what her studio has to offer. Highly recommend!

I am so thankful for this space. It is very clear the time and curation the owner has put into her business. With the hand picked books for the library and community events and speakers, you can tell how much the owner cares about every single person that walks through the door. All the reviews for this place must be from friends or something because it’s obviously impossible to book the studio. They are pretty non-responsive and when they do respond they say “sorry we don’t monitor emails much” or “sorry no one will be available to let you in.” Then why have available times? Their booking site is useless and so is their response team. Not sure if this place is even available to rent for dancers, but I’ve given up on trying to contact them.

The owner and pilates instructor Jamie at The Floor offers a space that is truly special. Every class I attend is a unique and intimate experience and not just a workout. Jamie challenges you and at the same time attends to your needs. Jamie is so attentive, so good at what she does, funny, and loves what she does.The energy she projects is felt and seen in every class. I wish I had learned about The Floor earlier, but now that I’ve arrived, the only thing that stops me from going 2-3 times a week is if I’m out of town.

I'm pretty sure The Floor came from a parallel universe where things are just better. Jamie, the teacher, finds the perfect balance of nudging me to try my best and improve my technique while never being so demanding that I feel judged or tempted to push through my injury.
The space itself is glorious, with potted plants and gorgeous natural light and gleaming wood floors. The other students are friendly and funny.
Before I found The Floor, I did not enjoy exercise and almost never did it. Now, I love doing Mat Pilates at The Floor with Jamie and the rest of the students. The Floor feels like a community and going to Pilates class there has quickly become one of my favorite rituals.

I discovered The Floor 5 years ago when I initially came to heal an injury post marathon. My body has fully recovered + become stronger over the years due to all of the instructors particularly Jamie, the business owner and lead.
Jamie pays so much attention to detail, is specific with her instructions, and offers modifications unique to your needs. Not only does Jamie teach pilates mat classes but diversifies the offerings at the Floor with a pilates & kettlebells and/or props classes, which are a bit more challenging for folks who want to mix up their routine.
I've never committed to a studio before discovering the Floor but it's become an expanded family and sanctuary thanks to the TLC Jamie puts in her business and her overt care for all of the students. While class is rigorous, you'll always get the support you need and feel refreshed after every challenge. I have nothing but endless praise for this practice. The Floor isn't just a pilates studio, it's an authentic community and oasis that has been a welcome refuge from the craziness of day to day New York.

Jamie is like the Olympic pilates coach you’re trying to impress. She’s knowledgeable, thorough, and quick to correct your form to prevent any injuries. The Floor is my and my performers home away from home! As a dancer and a producer this is my preferred space to rent , and I have been using them since they opened their upstairs back room space in 2019! Jamie, who runs the space, makes a true effort to create affordable community based space that is putting alot of good into the world by creating safe space for all. Beyond that it is beautiful, well lit, clean and refreshing place to move and make and explore!

I love this place! After 3 weeks of Pilates mat classes at The Floor, I was feeling stronger and walking taller. The owner, Jamie, is a positive force, and provides verbal cues that are clear and easy to understand. She can talk you through a two minute plank that you didn’t even know you could do, and since she has a great sense of humor, you’ll be smiling while doing it. Afterwards, during savasana, you get a little spritz of rose water, and after a moment of bliss, you’re ready to face the world again.

If I could give Jamie and The Floor more than 5 stars, I would. I’ve been going to class for over a year now and it has completely changed my life. I walk through the world feeling strong and confident - and not just physically. The community of wholehearted folks that come through the space are so uplifting and genuinely kind and it’s no wonder they all gravitate towards Jamie and The Floor. Everyone raises each other up and it’s unlike any other class I’ve seen in the city or elsewhere.
Also, as someone who suffers from both a knee injury and, at times, crippling endometriosis pain, fitness classes are not always easy but The Floor is both gentle on my body and a hell of a workout. Not to mention my overall health has improved so much since I started taking class that I don’t feel many symptoms of either of these ailments anymore. Jamie is a true professional, incredibly knowledgeable and very talented at what she does.
I could go on! Just know it’s a very special and welcoming place and a gift to Brooklyn. Not to mention it’s always so fresh and clean which is a must. May there be many more years of The Floor to come. And if you’re thinking of coming by for a class - come! You won’t regret it.

Jamie and the Pilates classes here are great--she's v mindful of the individuality of bodies (great with modification and you don't have to tell her anything twice), takes suggestions regarding what students want to get out of class. I've been going 3-4x weekly for 4 months and I have not only fully recovered function following a medical procedure, but I am definitely stronger and have made significant progress on longstanding limitations.
I also love the kettlebells class because it's, well, kettlebells. The music, the intensity, the vibe--always good and fun, and nothing makes me feel better than lifting weights does.
Studio also very pretty, always spotless, good bathrooms.

i love mat classes here and have been going religiously for a year. the classes are structured, balanced, challenging but never quite discouraging. Jamie is a learned, methodical and fun teacher — you will feel like you're in good hands. and the space itself is immaculate and a joy to spend time in. i've felt a significant improvement to my general well-being since i started and plan to go as long as i live in NYC.

I've been coming to this Pilates studio for years. It is a great community of people and feels like family. Such a beautiful, welcoming space and there are zoom and in-person classes. Jamie, the owner and main teacher, is so knowledgeable about Pilates and the body. Even if you have an injury, she will figure out how to modify movements to keep you safe. I absolutely love The Floor, I feel like I've finally found the ideal place to work out -- a clean, kind studio with small classes, great instruction, and zero competitive B.S. I've been attending classes for about 4 months. The studio space is absolutely lovely, decorated so well and serene. One of my favorite things -- the classes are NEVER overcrowded. Most pilates classes are limited to 6 people. That means you're never elbowing fellow students for a good spot and you always get tons of individual adjustment. Mats are laid out for you when you arrive. The class prices and membership are extremely reasonable. The location is convenient. But it's really the instructors that make The Floor what it is. Jamie is the best pilates teacher I've ever had, her corrections and adjustments always teach me something new. Jen and Ben are equally warm and knowledgable. I have yet to take a bad class here. The classes get me sweating and sore in the best way. They also all end in shavasana and most instructors will give you a short adjustment with essential oils -- it's heavenly. I've mainly taken pilates classes but am really looking forward to do a ballet class too. I also love that The Floor has a social and community mission. I couldn't recommend this studio more highly!

I have nothing but positive things to say about my experience at the Floor—I feel so lucky to have found this studio! The studio is bright, calm, and uncluttered (and meticulously clean!), and the instruction is unparalleled. Jamie is attune to individual injuries, progress, and modifications, takes time to carefully correct and explain proper technique, and is incredibly thoughtful in her cueing of breath.
The classes are matched by the wonderful community at the studio—the space and classes are intentional, accessible, and welcoming, and it is obvious that patrons share those values. I came to the studio in the process of rehabbing from an ankle fracture, and it is the best thing to have come out of a long and frustrating recovery process! A class at the Floor is my favorite way to start the day, and I'm so grateful to have found the space!

I purchased an unlimited membership at The Floor after attending several classes through Class Pass. The instructors are all amazing and extremely attentive to form and technique to ensure that you do not get injured. The restorative pilates and self-care classes are like a relaxing day at the spa. The caliber and authenticity of teaching at The Floor is top notch. The cuing is thoughtful and clear and everyone in our 7-person class received specific care and hands on. (Hands on only if desired, which I love and respect and is so missing from many studios these days that have less experienced teachers!) I attended a Self Care class that was such a perfect balance of myofascial release, stretching and breath. I’m so grateful that this studio and especially this class exist. The space itself is a beautiful, warm, minimalist oasis. I felt welcomed, seen, (remembered even!) and cared for. Give yourself this gift and get to The Floor!

I took a class here led by co-founder Jamie Dowd. I felt SO much better after Dowd’s class of exercises and stretching. I have chronic tight hamstrings and hips that were loosened. Dowd leads class in a friendly and clear way. I received instruction to improve my form and technique as if it was one-on-one personal training at a fraction of the price. Those small tweaks make all the difference.
It is an excellent clean bright modern beautifully designed and inviting studio that I want to spend time in. The prices are very reasonable.

The Floor is a true fitness and movement gem nestled along Atlantic Ave! The Floor is a gift for Brooklyn! This beautiful, sunlit studio space provides various movement classes with thoughtful and seasoned teachers. My experience at the Floor has been wonderful! The teachers are strong and highly knowledgable. The classes are small which allows me to ask questions and get a more personal experience. There are very few spaces in NY where I feel like I can completely relax and feel at peace. I went to try a class and immediately knew it would be one of those spaces. In addition to the space being beautiful & naturally lit, there is a kitchen and waiting area that is so welcoming you can't help but take the invite from Jamie to have a cup of tea or piece of fruit before or after class. The space aside, if you are looking to feel more connected, strong, flexible, & confident in your body and ability to improve your well being, these classes are for you! Jamie brings so much joy, individual attention and body knowledge to her teaching. This space is a gem!
