I am a fitness enthusiast and have been in the industry a long time, both as an instructor and as a client of many gyms, private training facilities and boutique fitness establishments. I have been a member of The Fort for two months now and I absolutely love it. The programs are thoughtful and affective and the coaches are all terrific. The time flies by and I genuinely look forward to all of my sessions. The price is beyond fair and worth every penny. If you are flexible and can manage to work out during off peak hours there are even more attractive packages that offer even more savings. I am so grateful to have found The Fort.

Incredible place to either begin your strength training journey, continue it, or up level it (massively)! Highly recommend The Fort for small group (what really feels like personalized) sessions with professional, welcoming, encouraging, and knowledgeable trainers (a wonderfully diverse group of coaches who are your cheering squad along with your session mates) who offer focused, structured, and variable training programming which both builds a base and uplevels your capacities, physical and mental.
Four standouts for me are:
1. Accessibility - The Fort is a best-in-class inclusive space for those training with a disability. I am deaf/hard of hearing and each trainer eagerly accommodated my needs and ensured I could participate fully in an easy-going-no-big-deal we do this for everyone manner that made me feel both taken-care-of and also one of the group.
2. Inclusivity - As a woman, I felt supported, included, and safe training here - many of my sessions were all women (by chance), and the mixed sessions felt comfortable, even when skill and experience levels varied widely. This is one of The Fort’s many secret-sauce strengths - creating opportunities for all to train and gain together.
3. Training Programming - The training changes week over week/days over days so that you’re both skill-building on core strengths but also upleveling new strengths/skills in a way that is challenging but doable. I exceeded prior training meaningfully without ‘blowing out’ my body (avoiding intense soreness that compromises subsequent day training). It’s genius.
4. Onboarding - One of the best onboarding processes I’ve experienced, a perfect blend of a concierge who takes care of everything and a highly-efficient technology driven process. Made scheduling and trying new class formats so easy and truly felt like they care if you’re there.

I want to commend The Fort on their customer service. I joined and bought a package only to find out later my health issues were going to take too many modifications to make training at The Fort possible. They did all they could to be inclusive but it wasn’t possible. The instructors were great and accommodating and The Fort even reimbursed the remainder of my package when I figured out I wasn’t able to keep up without injury (which they did not have to do). I would recommend this place to anyone. Great community and great workouts.

The Fort is the best group fitness training gym with a one on one /personal training feel in NYC. Great community , effective workouts , supportive trainers, a judgement free zone and a top notch fitness program. The program is designed in such a way that it’s great for beginners who have no prior history with strength training while also an excellent challenging program for experienced gym goers . I have been coming to The Fort for a year and a half now, and I love it! I am huge on accountability, and The Fort provides the perfect amount that I need; between the excellent coaches and the incredible community of other clients, it's been the most consistent I have ever been with any exercise. I have seen results, both inside and out, which is incredibly encouraging, and my doctor has even commented on my improved health and has encouraged me to keep doing what I am doing. You can tell how much time and effort goes into developing each program, how serious the Fort team is about supporting their community, and how passionate they are about what they do! If you're into strength training/personal trainer style workouts (and even if you're not), it's definitely worth the trial period to see if this is for you!

The Fort – A Life-Changing Experience
I’ve been attending The Fort since February 2023, and it’s truly been transformative—both mentally and physically. After gaining 40 pounds during the pandemic and struggling with recurring back injuries, I was at the lowest point of my life. I was not only overweight but mentally in a very dark place, dealing with severe depression and even suicidal thoughts. I knew I needed help, but I felt lost and overwhelmed. That’s when I found The Fort.
It started with a compassionate, thorough phone call from Kyle Fields, who listened to my fears—about injury, feeling out of place among fitter people, and my general insecurity. He connected me with Dan Trink and Brett, who helped me take the leap. My first visit was nerve-wracking, but Brett was incredibly kind and thoughtful as she toured me through both gym locations. I vividly remember being out of breath after climbing the stairs—proof of how far gone my fitness was. Still, I decided to commit, and that decision changed everything.
The Fort operates on four-week training cycles, alternating between strength-building with lower reps and high weight, and hypertrophy with higher reps and moderate weight (this is an oversimplification of their programming; there's also mobility drills, an important focus on form, cardiovascular conditioning, and a lot more). Every session ends with a grueling “THAW” (Test of Heart and Will), an intense finisher involving conditioning exercises like rowing, sandbag cleans, burpees, etc. It varies per class.
My first workout was humbling—I felt my glute cramping during the warm-up and was unable to finish the THAW. But with encouragement from the coaches, I kept showing up, despite the soreness and doubt. I made a promise to myself that by June 2023, I would be able to finish the THAW in "Beast Mode" (a more advanced level). And I did!
For those of you worried about injuries, the coaches are also incredibly attentive to any discomforts, adapting exercises on the spot to ensure you’re working safely and effectively, whether it’s modifying movements due to a sore knee or adjusting a lift that causes pain.
When I started, I weighed 236 pounds at 5’11”. As of October 2024, I’m 192 pounds, stronger and leaner than ever. I went from barely squatting 35 kg to an impressive 95 kg for reps, with a 130 kg one-rep max. The coaches at The Fort are a huge part of this progress. Their attention to form, personalized approach (with no more than four people per class), and relentless support make all the difference. They help you push through those tough reps, ensuring safety and progress every step of the way.
The sense of community at The Fort is something I never expected but now deeply value. Yes, there are some incredibly fit people, but there’s a mix of all fitness levels, and everyone supports each other. There’s even a healthy competition with workout tracking, but no shame—just a focus on personal progress. The friendships I’ve made here, both with coaches like Jules Bolte and fellow members, have been crucial to my journey.
As for pricing, yes, it’s more expensive than your typical gym, but price can be a strong motivator for those looking to push themselves to new levels of performance. The Fort *motivates* you to go—your progress is visible on a massive board and via tracking on an app. The level of coaching, personalized attention, and adaptability (especially for frequent travelers like me) justifies every penny.
With four locations across NYC, The Fort is accessible, but more importantly, it’s a place that truly cares about your fitness journey. I’ve been to all three Flatiron locations, and each one has something special.
To sum it up: The Fort didn’t just change my body—it saved my life. I was in a deep, dark place when I started, and now I feel strong, motivated, and part of something bigger than myself. If you’re serious about transforming your life, I cannot recommend The Fort enough.

I'd been an aspiring "person who works out regularly" for over a decade prior to joining The Fort. I would try for a bit and then give up. I have been a member for over a year now and it's the first time that I have been so consistent since, ever. I noticed that my mindset when it comes to working out has transformed, it is no longer a form of punishment, but something fun that I do for myself. The coaches are so personable and the people that I have been are always super encouraging. Lastly, the programs are based on real science so it really takes out any guesswork from training. This is hands down the best gym in NYC! I have come here for about 1.5 years and it has consistently been a fantastic experience. The training programs are well-structured and thought out to challenge you for a full body workout, while also building upon prior sessions. The results have been great as the programs consistently improve your strength and endurance. The coaches are wonderful at offering the right guidance and improvements, whether it's what weight to use for new movements or form tweaks that increase performance. Most importantly, the gym is based on a great community that supports everyone who joins, regardless of where they are starting from, and wants to see members succeed.

I moved from Minneapolis to New York in 2022 and was in search of a gym. I wasn’t sold on Equinox or any of the other boutique gyms around. By way of Instagram, I signed up for a trial. I loved the small group aspect and that the programs had a strength focus. I’m very skeptical of fitness coaches and trainers but well within the first couple sessions the I knew coaches were well trained and informed. They focus on technique and skill before pushing you into anything you aren’t ready for. The second part that sold it was the community. It wasn’t just the coaches but the members are great too. Encouraging, a little competitive but always fun (even through the THAWS at times). Highly recommend joining The Fort. I moved back to Minneapolis recently and miss it a lot. The Fort is the absolute best gym in NYC! The programming is incredibly effective and ensures you make progress in a way I’ve never experienced. I have been going to The Fort for the past 6 months and it's the best gym & community I've been a part of! The owners & coaches put so much thought and care into the community: they are extremely knowledgable and really think through the structure and goals of their programs. I was lucky enough to find The Fort in NYC in March 2024 and I am still an enthusiastic member more than 6 months later.
The energy, enthusiasm and inclusive community of coaches and members make The Fort a special place. Like a lot of New Yorkers I've had memberships at a myriad of gyms and boutique fitness studios across the city but in more than 25 years in the city nothing has kept me consistently coming back like The Fort.
The programming is extremely well designed, covering the bases for strength, mobility and cardio in every workout. The Fort coaching team also manages to truly "meet people where they are at" , balancing individual attention with group accountability and community.
I've taken many swings at getting back in shape in recent years, but The Fort is the only place that manages to keep me coming back week after week.
A training session at The Fort is always a bright spot in my day. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a program that boosts motivation and gives encouragement on the overall journey to better health!

When I signed up, I had tried weightlifting a handful of time, but had always felt uncomfortable showing that ugly face that comes out when you're fighting tooth and nail to finish the rep. The Fort helped me get over that fear.
The folks here expect you to do your very best, whatever that may be, and nothing less. The coaches are there to help you find the fight in you when you feel like you have nothing left to give. There have been countless times where I felt like I'm at my limit, but a few encouraging words unlocked some hidden energy store. It is so freeing to release my inner beast, and I think it was this that made me fall in love with weightlifting.
Just after a few weeks of training here, I feel stronger, and I have seen significant improvement in my cardio. Notably, sprinting to catch the bus feels noticeably easier.

It’s simple – if you’re not at the Fort, you’re doing it wrong. Dead wrong. Allow me to explain…
I started coming to the Fort as a ~35 year old seasoned finance desk jockey who, while in good shape (aesthetically at least), had convinced myself that I was far, dare I say pitifully, past my athletic peak. To set the stage – I had grown tired of HIIT fitness classes, which felt like they were doing nothing for me other than spiking my cortisol levels and draining my strength over time, and had grown tired of traditional personal training – showing up and quietly cranking through sets with zero personal engagement. Sure, PT enabled me to keep my strength, but was I getting faster or more athletic? Absolutely not. To boot, as someone who dedicated a fair amount of time to the gym – it started to get super lonely.
Enter, the Fort. Not even sure where to start or what to say. Quality of the coaching: A+. Quality of the programming: A+. Quality of the community: A+++. Regardless of your fitness level – if you’re interested in an incredible journey in an amazing, encouraging community – look no further. You’ve arrived.
Before joining the Fort, I had convinced myself I was as good as I could have been. A couple years later, I’m happy to say – I was dead wrong. I’m now far stronger, faster and more well-conditioned than I’ve ever been – all while having made great friends in the process. If you’re doing anything other than the Fort, I ask you to STRONGLY reconsider – you’re leaving a tremendous amount of value on the table for yourself.

I’ve always hated going to the gym… then I found The Fort. When you walk into a gym alone, you never really know what to do, or if you have the motivation.
Working out at The Fort, I’ve gotten 2-3x stronger. I’m deadlifting 400, benching 250, etc. their program works. And the community is amazing.

If you’re reading this, you’re likely trying to decide if The Fort is a good fit for you (or you read gym reviews for fun. Do you!). I’ll try and save you some mental gymnastics and say - GO! Now. Do the 2 week trial. By the end of the first class you’ll never look back. I joined the Fort in January after months of seeing the videos pop up in my IG feed. I was intrigued, but honestly, intimidated. I’ve done personal training on and off for years, as well as the typical NYC classes, but thought this looked way beyond my abilities. Also, the intro call activated my anxiety, which as it turns out was completely unfounded because Kyle was approachable, honest and his enthusiasm was contagious. This is a place where the training programs are serious, thoughtful and challenging as hell, but it’s all wrapped in a big bow of top tier, knowledgeable, real deal coaches that truly care about our form and progress (and have wicked senses of humor) and a membership base of unique people all of whom will make you believe you are capable of the heaviest of lifts and longest of ridiculous conditioning segments. Every class I learn something new - a technique, a fun fact about a coach, an interesting story from another member, an insight into myself - so The Fort provides an open environment for growth beyond your glutes :). As someone who could not get into a good workout routine, The Fort has definitely been a great solution for me. The program holds you accountable by signing up for monthly sessions, versus individual classes. I love all the workouts and love how attentive the trainers are. Shoutout to Aaron, Angelo and Will for always making the workout fun while also being the best cheerleaders and pushing me to my full potential!!! This is soooo overdue. What I can say about THE FORT. It is my special place that I love. The place where I can just focus on making myself better without any judgements. I have been a FORT member since 2015 and it has changed my life. Before THE FORT I could barely lift any weight at all. I was always tired and just feeling hum drum.
I am a stronger more confident and successful being due to Kyle and Dan ! It doesn't matter where you are in life with strength and excercise, this gym will get you where you want to be and so much more !!!!

Over the years, I've tried almost every fitness studio in NYC, but I can say, The Fort really is the best! 4 people max in a class with a trainer, it's really like personal training, with so much individual attention. Possibly even better than personal training, since there is a nice community feel to it. Both the coaches and other members are so encouraging and motivating.
I just finished my first 4 months and in those 4 months, I both gained muscle and lost body fat! I've never really done much barbell work before, but love it and am lifting more than I ever have.
All the coaches are great, care about form and really want you to get better and stronger. They've definitely pushed me when I didn't believe I could do something, but they knew I could. I can't say enough good things about this place. I just paid for my next 4 months and can't wait to see what happens next!

I once told my coach that if “you ever need to feel humbled, go to The Fort”. No matter how strong, fast or badass you think you are, by the end of the session, you will be on the floor catching your breath.
If you are a seasoned athlete or just learning, each workout can be modified to get you to reach your maximum potential. The coaches at The Fort are skilled, knowledgeable and understand how to get you out of your comfort zone safely. Coaches observe your movements, construct your form and praise your gumption. Based on what they know about you as an athlete, they create goals that at first seem daunting, but you can accomplish them together. Coaches push you, and somehow know your limits better than you do.
Since I’ve started going to The Fort, I have lifted and pushed heavier weights than I ever thought possible. Their ability to keep you accountable is unparalleled. In the gym, they record your PR’s, keep track of your weights while you are working, and use your past results to encourage you to go heavier and faster. The Fort mentality applies to every aspect of our daily activities. Their mentality is contagious, it transferred over to my personal and professional life. I found myself grading papers or math tests, exhibiting the same mentality: creating a framework by setting a goal, creating a plan to get it done, and getting after it.
So, if you are just getting started or improving on finite movements to propel you to the next level of fitness, call Dan and Kyle and LFG!

I say this - I’ve done everything fitness related living in NYC. I’m always open to try anything, atleast once.
But The Fort hits different - it’s a community. A community of trainers and members that range from all different ages and weight classes. Everyone can go at their own pace. Here goes a full admission: I have never formally worked out as an adult. Ever. The coaches and program at the Fort Flatiron changed all of that. Two years in, I have gone from never having deadlifted to lifting over 250 pounds. The Fort's program has one agenda: to have you realize you are stronger than you ever imagined. My coworker kept talking about her gym. She thought I would be happy with them, that the The Fort is up my ally. She was right! It was the best decision I made! I struggled the first 3 months but all I heard was the coaches and members cheering me on, giving me that extra push! I'm one year in and can't be happier being a part of this incredible positive, inclusive, non judgemental group of people. I cannot rave about the Fort enough and honestly, don’t even know where to begin. The Fort is an incredible community of people, who train hard, push each other, lift each other up, and do what works. Everyone is at a different point in their own fitness journey and the Fort meets you where you are and trains you in a fun, sustainable, and safe way, while empowering you to do more.
I’ve been here since August 2021 and I am stronger, more confident, and more resilient than I have ever been. I honestly think so much of what I get out of The Fort is mental. Just KNOWING how much my body is capable of, how far I am able to push myself when it gets hard- that sort of stuff applies to every part of life outside of the gym. On the more physical side of things, I came into the Fort pretty much at square one when it came to lifting weight. At this point, I can deadlift and squat more than my body weight (we’re getting there slowly on the bench) with no signs of stopping.
What really sets the Fort apart is the community. You are known by name, you get to know everyone in your session, you cheer each other on and push each other to do more. It’s a space for everyone no matter where you’re at in your fitness journey! I love being able to train with people and coaches that have become friends, and who really believe in you and know much you can do. I’ve been training with most of these coaches for well over a year now and they are simply not going to let me slack off. If I even touch some light weight, I will find myself being handed some adequately heavy weight real fast.
If you’re someone searching for that push, a community that is undoubtedly a safe, happy place, and real mental and physical results, look no further.

The Fort has changed my life when it comes to my personal health journey. I’ve seen improvement in my strength and endurance that is didn’t think was possible.
The format of small group classes is what drew me to the fort. I can’t tell you how many wastes credits I had at Barry’s Bootcamp just because the environment was intimidating and progress didn’t seem achievable.
Initially when I learned about the small group classes - my first thought was that it would be a great way to make friends. It's WAY more than that. It took time but I eventually found my consistent workout groups within the last 3-4 months. It has, without a doubt, increased the pace of my progress. The coaches do absolutely push us but there is something more that comes from your training group. This sense of comradery with an added ounce of peer pressure (the good kind) that makes you want to achieve similar goals. You see their plates and think "maybe I can do more too."
I can't imagine going back to the days of earbuds and solitary exercise. I know it works for many people but group training has given me much better results and some amazing/inspiring new friends. 💜

I’ve been coming to The Fort for 5 months now. It’s excellent, by far the best workout program I’ve ever done. It’s extremely challenging and innovative. They constantly switch up the program so you’re never bored or too used to one thing. The Fort is for EVERYONE! I started working out at The Fort 11/2021 and I have lost 60lbs in about five months. I only start with the weight loss component because I know for a lot of people “weight loss” is such a strong motivator for starting an exercise program. I have nothing but amazing things to say about this place. I was targeted via an Instagram ad and decided to give it a shot. I took the survey via the website and was on the phone with Kyle less than two hours later. This place is an amazing experience and just a great vibe in general.
I've been coming here for about a month now and already notice a big difference in the way I look/feel. It's challenging and exhausting, but I really do believe that if you put in the consistency, you will see impact/results immediately.
One of my biggest fears about getting back into shape was the intimidation of joining a gym where I couldn't keep up with everyone else. All the trainers here are amazing too (shoutout to Gab, Corey, Gelo, Dwight, and Matt just to name a few). They're super supportive and push you at the same time to help you beat your goals each workout. I'm locked in for the next 16 weeks and can't wait to keep getting after it.
If you're on the fence about coming here, I would say just do it. You won't regret it.

If I could give the Fort a million stars, I would. To be fully honest, I was really nervous/intimidated to sign up. I never really lifted weights seriously before and kept telling myself "when I reach a certain level/comfort, I'll sign up", but when I visited the Fort, I was blown away by how kind, supportive, and non-judgmental everyone was - from the trainers, to the other people that were going there. There was never a moment that I felt out of place or unsupported. And my fitness has improved so much since joining. I am a marathon runner, and the way they structure the workouts at the fort has helped me with the final pushes of my marathons, which I usually fizzle out on. I cannot say enough good things about this place, and if you are even considering it slightly, I would highly you recommend visiting and checking it out. You will not regret it.

I joined The Fort for it's community. In the past I've taken just about every type of workout class you can imagine, have had a gym membership, and splurged on personal trainers. When I say The Fort is unlike any workout I have experienced, truer words could not be spoken.
I enjoy lifting weights, but I need the expertise of a professional nor do I have the self discipline to go to a gym and do it myself. The trainers help you perfect your form and push you to show up for yourself. Not only are they the best at what they do, their personalities shine through and show how much they care while having as much fun as possible. Having small classes and seeing the same faces every week makes working out something to look forward to and not something to check off your to do list for the day. I also appreciate that you can be at ANY level and accomplish the same challenging workout.
I could keep going on about the vibe, but it wouldn't be a proper review without talking about the results. In just a couple months I already feel myself getting physically and mentally stronger. I am so grateful to Kyle and Dan for creating the space I have been seeking for quite sometime. I am excited to see where I'll be even 6 months from now.

Short version: It’s an investment in yourself, it works no matter your fitness level, just show up.
Longer version: Almost three months into The Fort and it remains a wonderful experience. A few observations to share.
1. Don’t be intimidated. Yes, there are some very fit people but there also many more people like me—54 years old, recovering from major ankle surgery, haven’t worked out in a while—who have to work through every exercise. There is *zero* judgement. The coaches and the community are encouraging, positive, and detailed.
2. It’s amazingly thoughtful. Alternating between conditioning and strength with a new program every 4 weeks, there is precision and science in the movements and they all build together to have lasting impact.
3. You will feel good. The accomplished feeling after completing the workout and having increased energy to go through your day is life-changing. The effects of confidence and focus have carried over into my work life as well.
If you are looking for a gym that will provide deep and lasting change in your fitness level and overall health, just show up at The Fort. It works.

There’s a huge presence of professionalism, accountability from the coaches, and comradery amongst the groups you may workout with. I searched "gyms near me" after about a year of not going to a gym, and after I had recovered from surgery for 6 weeks. The Fort showed up and peaked my interest, although a semi-private gym was not something I had considered initially. Dan and Kyle and all the coaches are mad cool and helpful. I completed the trial and was hooked. It's intense and you get out what you put in. I have not once shown up to The Fort feeling confident, but I always leave feeling like a badass. I love the team-oriented aspect (and competition) that comes with working out in small groups. It's also great that there are two locations on the same street: one for conditioning and one for strength. Strangely (or, more accurately, predictably), I've seen improvements in all other areas of my life as well since joining: mental, physical, emotional, academic, professional, you name it. I consider myself self-disciplined, but that self-discipline waned on the daily since last January. Joining the Fort has made me relight that fire and feel it every single day, which is just so cool. I'm so grateful.

I've been training with the Fort virtually since last summer and have had the pleasure of going in person when I've been in town. The training here is tough, but fun; most importantly, it is highly evidence based, driven by data and expertise, which I appreciate. As such, you get results. While probably more expensive than a traditional gym, if you're serious about training for whatever purposes (for me, it is to make me a better runner and I just like a tough workout!), then this is the place for you. Dan, Kyle, Jess and the other staff care immensely about your workout and it shows. I started with them because I wanted to become a better runner and have found a whole new hobby (lifting!) that I enjoy, too. I guess you could say I also now really love doing burpees, as well. Anyways, I can't say enough good things about them and wish we had one in Nashville (HINT HINT).

This is a top-notch strength training gym without all the nonsense and up selling of other gyms. I am a cycling enthusiast so I was a little skeptical about strength training, but since starting 6 weeks ago my strength and cycle performance have hit all time highs. The trainers at this gym are amazing (super fit too) and go above and beyond to make sure your form is perfect. I belong to 3 different gyms in the city and The Fort trainers give you personalized attention like nothing I’ve seen before. Also, the staff and members are all super friendly; and the owner is a class act who runs a small business and goes the extra mile to help you hit your goals.
