This gym is super sandbagged, but that’s not too surprising considering the proximity to the gunks. The routes are interesting so at least when you’re stuck up there, you’re not bored.

The problem with GV gyms is general is the insurance policy they have that requires members to sign a waiver every. single. time. the. climb. Not to mention not letting kids younger than 5 climb, even with proper gear and staff? No other gyms in the state (or tri-state that we’ve been to, including as far as middle PA) have these rules. It’s really a pain and causes the check in line to get super backed up at times.

My husband and I brought our nephew, they wouldn’t let him climb and said he was too young. Didn’t offer up the information that staff can belay for 4 year olds until I mentioned it and said no one was available to help, even though several team members are milling about. No alternative times or recommendations were offered despite the clearly upset kid next to us. I understand the website has this information, but it isn’t listed clearly and needs digging. Regardless, no gym has this rule in the area and it’s a bit absurd. Wish that staff were a bit more accommodating for our group.

Went on a Sunday with my husband, his sister and her family. Our nephew has just turned 5 and he wanted to climb like his awesome uncle. Wonderful experience.
It has been over 3 years since my husband (an avid climber) has been to this climbing gym and my first time here. Hands down the best climbing gym we've experienced. The kid at the front desk was very kind and courteous and very patient with the little ones in tow.
It was quiet and laid back, perfect for our 5yr old nephew's first experience on the ropes.

The staff here is wonderful, but I am hitting a point of frustration with this gym and the inconsistency/difficulty of the grading. I’m all for pushing myself, but I should not be leaving in tears because I am constantly so discouraged by struggling on lower graded climbs when I can consistently climb higher grades at other gyms. I hear this feedback from many - the grading is inconsistent and often inaccurate. It’s not just a skill deficit if a 5.10 climber is struggling on what should be a “beginner level” climb.

The facility is really nice And the staff is very friendly.

I have one issue with the operation. As a member who paid $900 for the year, I find it ridiculous that every time I come in, I have to sign a new waiver. Sometimes the line is a couple people long with one person working at the desk. It just doesn’t make any sense to me.

Every other gym across the country, you swipe and go as he paid member. It’s mildly frustrating and a deterrence for me to return.

My husband and I recently visited the gravity vault in Poughkeepsie. Kevin S was our guide and was beyond helpful! He cheered us on and instructed us as we had no clue what we were supposed to be doing. We definitely want to go back! Decent gym with a mix of top rope, sport, and bouldering. Basic gym/training equipment.

Membership prices are higher than surrounding competitors (Movement Valhalla and BC New Paltz) for day passes and monthly memberships which is pretty lame considering Valhalla is a better gym (and in Westchester which is just an expensive area) and BCs which has much more creative bouldering setting.

This is a good place to climb for people who have never climbed at other gyms (Movement fka the Cliffs in NYC, Goat in NJ, Allez Up in Montreal, Momentum in SLC, Earth Treks in CO, the list goes on..).

If you are an experienced lead climber indoors at other gyms or outdoor sport (up to 5.12)… you will probably take serious issue with what this gym has to offer you. After 6 months of climbing at this gym, I’ve come up with this list of reasons why this gym is lacking:

- Lead routes are NOT forerun with a lead rope, only top rope, so the rope placement and therefore its safety is not factored in during setting. Shorter climbers who have to dyno may get their feet caught in the rope because of this issue (has happened to me multiple times).
- Ignoring the lead rope and clipping during setting also means that there is excessive rope drag sometimes.
- Hold density (number of holds on the wall) is quite low compared to the better gyms named above, so alternative beta is not welcome—particularly problematic for climbers whose body types don’t match those of the setters. This boils down to a gym that doesn’t offer much in terms of accessible climbing.
- Lastly, the routes are consistently sandbagged, so if you’re just getting into ropes climbing and hop on a 5.8 at this gym, you’re actually getting on a route that the other/better gyms would rate 10b or 10c… newbies be warned. Don’t get injured.

Lots of room for improvement for the only ropes gym less than an hour from the Gunks.

Our kids are on spring break so we finally decided to try this place out. We made an appt for 7pm which you must do to get a slot and fill some forms out before hand. When you get there you fill out a waiver also but it’s right on an iPad at the front desk. The front desk employee wish I got her name welcomed us and was very nice. She was really good with the kids and getting to know them. Now this place there’s a lot going on and can be a hazard if not careful. First things first she got serious with them and gave them some rules. After that she got them fitted with some rock climbing shoes and a harness. She had us wait on the sofa for our instructor. We got there 15 mins early as they requested and we were seated right on time at 7pm.

About a min or 2 later the instructor named Kat came to us and introduced herself and spoke with the kids briefly to get to know them and they were off to the walls. My son and daughter who are 10 and 5 were both excited and nervous. Even the kids walls seemed high to them but she assured them how safe they were in her hands. For the hour they took turns going up the walls and they loved it. My daughter through most of it would stop a quarter of the way and want to come down. At first Kat would let her come down and talk to her and reassure her she was safe. Then little by little she would hold her at the point she wanted to stop and talk her through it. Tell her to breathe and show her how she was locked at that position and she would be ok. She would push her but not to a point where my daughter would get discouraged. We loved that! But the end of the hour my son was burned out he let his sister take the last few turns and wouldn’t you know it Kat for my daughter to reach past the point she would keep stopping and get to a point she was trying to get her to reach during the session. We all cheered her on. My daughter did not want to leave. So we are definitely happy with the experience! My kids are in other memberships so we will just be doing like the 5 pack and bringing them when they get the urge to climb which I’m sure will be soon.

Pricing here isn’t cheap and I wouldn’t say it’s too expensive because the experience and the 1 on 1 you’re getting is great. You get the gear and an hour with the instructor.

We will be back and this time my wife and I want to try it out too.

Totally miserable experience- they did refund our money
Steer clear of Brandon especially if you have children in your group
He shouldn't be working with kids especially unique children such as those with disabilities and/or on the spectrum
Brandon has zero patience or respect and will put the children off their experience
This place should be ashamed of their employees and not being up to ADA expectations

My girlfriend was DYING to start rock wall climbing, but the process can feel so intimidating from what membership option works for you, how to obtain all the gear that you need in a cost effective way,to figuring out what certifications are required and necessary for beginners. Megan really helped me out. She was super patient with me and very knowledgeable and helpful. I have a lot of experience with customer relations and member services and can say she is 100% the reason we’ll be by later today to sign up. Compared to other prominent gyms in the U.S., this gym is mediocre, IMO. Compared to what was available 30 years ago, it’s amazing. You can definitely get a workout here. It has a good amount of terrain for toproping and bouldering. It is clean and spacious, well built. Couple of fun but highly textured cracks. Good wifi. Good burrito joint next door. What’s missing - the weights and accompanying workout area is tiny and very limited; not a good place for cross-training and getting a healthy workout including antagonistic training. For cardio, there is one cheap non-electric bike with annoying moving handles, and one row machine. Fingerboards are on textured walls so your tips get roasted. No shower in the bathroom, so off to work or out on the town smelling like a workout. Only two auto-belays and limited grades at each one so if you’re alone you’re doing the same routes over and over again, but at least they have two. The bouldering walls are pretty short and have a limited number of moves. The lead and TR walls are short compared to modern high end gyms. Crunch Fitness is next door to complete the workout and get a shower.

He took the extra time with our child who’s on the spectrum, gave him confidence and helped him reach the to, literally. My 4 yo is going on 25, very smart but sometimes can be timid and shy. Owen recognized that when he looked at the wall with intimidation and a bit of fear. He allowed him to climb and repel at his pace and gave him the confidence he need to reach the top. I brought my friends daughter she had a great time. I would recommend going with someone who can get belay certified because there arent many autobelay or make an appt to have an instructor . The bouldering wall is huge and has a ton of routes . I would definitely recommend this gym. They have specials too!

Gym is great however be wary of buying from their shop. Had a $155 pair of shoes break in 3 day and was just brushed off to take it up with the manufacturer. Gym won't stand behind the products they sell.

Edit: Other shoe broke too. Gym reached out and was able to get them replaced. Also made good on a fee requires to warranty first pair. Thanks!

My husband and I moved to the Kingston area last year from NYC and this is the only roped gym within an hour drive or so of us. When we can't climb outside because of the weather, we either go here or to BC's in New Paltz for bouldering. On the plus side, it's a large, clean gym, and it's never crowded (of course compared to our city gym, nothing is crowded). The negatives are part corporate policy, and part specific to this gym. A day pass is $21, which is expensive, albeit cheaper than the city of course. A family membership is minimum 3 people. At the Cliffs in LIC my husband and I had a family membership which did save us a bit of money, and were disappointed to find out we can't have one at Gravity Vault. The setting is inconsistent - some of the routes are great, and some are absolutely awful. You do get that with most gyms, and setters have good days and bad days, but we've noticed some really awful awkward setting here on a regular basis. The routes don't get changed up very often - some can be up for 6 months. Then when they strip the routes, they sometimes strip half the gym at the same time. And not necessarily just for competitions, but on a random weeknight when we come in after work (and we don't always check the calendar to see when that's happening, because most gyms don't strip half their walls at once). So when half of the walls are bare, why are you still charging people full price when there's like hardly anything to climb?? Customer service is meh - some of the people at the front desk are nice and helpful, others don't seem to give two hoots about you, but we've encountered that at most gyms. Lastly, the corporate policy of having to use a Grigri for leading is nonsense. We've never had to use them at any other gym and have been leading trad for 10 years and never use them outside. Even if you're very experienced and you just have a moment of inattention, your leader can still deck if you're using a Grigri, just ask Ashima. And if safety is really a concern, then perhaps the staff should be a little more experienced with rigging systems ahead of time instead of figuring it out on the fly, and being more careful about not dropping stuff and having to shout "rock"! in a gym. That sure was a first for us.

Been to a lot of gyms around the country and GV rivals the best. Especially the LI location.

Fun place to face a fear of heights. Nice walls and I'm pretty sure they have lessons if you want to learn how to rock climb.
