I travel often between Toronto and New York, and anyone who travels frequently knows how difficult it can be to find a solid gym. To put some perspective on this review, I’m a serious lifter of 16 years with a routine that consists of bodybuilding and Muay Thai, so I’m used to pushing myself as hard as I can.

The intensity at The Training Lab (TTL) is unlike anything I’ve experienced. Their programming is incredibly well thought out, and the exercises they put you through just make sense. While I’ve only trained with Daria, Jose, and Reuben, every instructor brings their own unique style and approach to the table, so you’re never stuck doing the same routines over and over. You can tell they genuinely love what they do. The pace is non-stop, and the trainers will call you out if they see you trying to take shortcuts. Because of that, you want to respect them and push yourself beyond what you think you can do. Ten minutes into every class (which is basically just the warmup), I ask myself why I keep signing up to get my ass kicked, but by the end, I’m already looking forward to the next session.

In addition to their training programs, their facility also includes a recovery lounge which to me is the highlight of TTL. It consists of two cold plunges, a sauna and a variety of other recovery equipment. It’s a truly special facility and something I wish I had out here in Toronto.

I do have to be objective and provide some criticism/feedback. The music selection at times was very odd and did not fit the entire vibe. I’m not sure who thought throwing Taylor Swift into the mix was a good idea, but man did that throw me off and cause me to lose focus. I appreciate variety and different genres, but there’s a time and place for certain songs.

If you’re someone who wants a challenge and wants to test how far they can push themselves then you NEED to come here - no negotiation. It goes without saying that training here will be part of my daily routine every time I’m in NYC.

Ps: quick shoutout to one of the owners, Daria. She went out of her way to accommodate me (an out-of-towner). Her and her boyfriend Peter are some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet as they made me feel welcomed right from the jump.

Booked through class pass. Arrived 4 minutes late at the front desk then checked in and went to class. The instructor didn’t let me in the class and said there’s a 5 minute late policy. It was my first time and i don’t know the policy, it didn’t say on class pass either. The instructor was super rude.

A group of us found TTL in the process of training for the Hyrox race this year, and we loved it immensely and decided to stay beyond the race and just keep training and getting stronger. Coming from a self defense and contact combat school, this was an entirely different skill set to hone and has become a way of life. TTL has a variety of classes designed to increase strength, endurance and create all round athletes. The instructors are very knowledgeable, provide personal attention, and this is what caught my eye is - they're doing races, classes, and competitions along with you and constantly holding themselves to the next higher standard. The community is excellent, the facility is super and they just introduced a new recovery lounge, once again demonstrating that they're thinking ahead and giving their athletes the best. The lab has internal competitions to challenge us, as well as prepares us for external events with very well informed instructors. They're very understanding of life events and things that sometimes cause disruption, and will work with one for membership flexibility in light of these events. I feel fortunate to be part of this community.

If you’re reading this then the chances are that you’re serious about your health and fitness. This is a place for people like you. I took the training day class, which I would describe as a sports conditioning workout with elements of CrossFit. The warm up is tough and then the workout itself is challenging. Be prepared to do a lot of burpees, lunges, assault bikes, and also lots of compound movements with weights. The coaching is excellent, friendly and supportive. The facility is spotless and the machines and other equipment are very clean. If you are ever in NYC and want to challenge yourself, I strongly urge you to visit this place.

Found the gym through ClassPass but was sad to see I was only allowed to take one class.
I really enjoyed the “trading day” cardio class on a Tuesday morning. The format was great, the pace was challenging, the instructor was clear yet motivating, had good form and demo’d what we needed to do, and overall made the class fun! We had a good number of people but we were spread out and it did not feel crowded. I was also happy to see they have a good variety of equipment
Hope to go back soon and try out their other classes.

Anna the Aquarius manager will give you a one second chance so be there so the job will never be promised to anyone. The promise after is $15 an hour to be there at 4:30am terrible experience not worth the time when you can barely get a bathroom break and it’s unorganized. One of the toughest classes in NYC. With boot-camp style HIIT, smaller group strength specific training as well as personal training and yoga. TTL is a great place to go to train and not the place to show up hung over or after work and expect to cruise through and break a light sweat. The instructors are very hands on, will ensure your form is correct and modify the workout as needed to ensure you are challenged no matter what your level of fitness.

Took a class here recently to use remaining ClassPass credits. Liked the vibe and the sweaty hour working out. The only thing was that some dumbbells were by the window which I didn’t notice and they would have been better for my rows. Also, the sequence had too many pull-ups imho (20 alternate with 10 assault bike cal amrap within 10 mins). Switched to negative and banded pull-ups as 20 strict pull-ups at a time seems to be too much. Impressive gym and selection of equipment, but no open gym time here and within a class there’s a limited number of exercises - you either like them or don’t. Pricing high or on par with other bfxs

I first started taking the Training Lab classes the first year they opened. I absolutely loved it from the get-go because of the intensity and how the trainers always motivated me to push harder when I felt I just "can't do it".

1 year later and I'm still taking classes here and have far-exceeded my fitness goals, feeling stronger than I've ever felt before. The pours of sweat you'll feel is incredibly worth it. You'll come out of this studio, down those long flight of stairs like you've just conquered something great. Just like everyone says, it is NOT for the faint of heart and would not recommend it to beginners. It will push your endurance level to the extreme. All of the instructors are phenomenal and yes, like a true bootcamp style training, they will yell at you (but with a lot of love behind those yells). My favorite is Daria - she is cray, but I love her so much!

Bought a 2 pack pass and was only able to use one due to time constraints. I did the "Training Ground" class on Friday July 19th with Johnny. It was similar to a CrossFit class in that there was a cardio/core/stretch warm up, then a big lift and finished with a circuit style/obstacle course workout.

The front desk (I also think one person was possibly a trainer) were friendly as I couldn't figure out how to use the digital lockers (but yeah for digital lockers!!) and she showed me how. I don't know her name but she was so fill of energy and had a great personality.

As for the class, it was definitely exhausting, but I also felt exhilarating at the same time. Johnny was definitely watching everyone's form and I really appreciated that. I don't even think I was ready for his class as I had taken 3 straight days off from the gym, but his class made up for it lol.

If I were in the area, I'd definitely do it again.

The only gym I have ever attended regularly despite 57 years of sports and exercise!! Led by the founder and ever present Ruben, the team is incredibly motivating without getting the into the usual extremes of "we are all happy together, kumbaya" or "I am the tyrant and you will suffer". Likewise the other clients (younger than me and beautiful) are neither self-conscious nor competing, just focused. However, be aware that the classes are very intense, you will be tested and come out far fitter. Lastly, they have customized one-on-one classes if you want or when you are recovering from injury, this is the ultimate indulgence as these guys are highly competent professionals, especially the fabulous Daria and Coulter! You owe it to yourself to try this gym for a month at least.

This is by far the best workout in NYC. After trying a plethora of gyms around NYC, this one takes the cake. I've been attending this gym with various fitness goals in mind and the trainers at Training Lab have helped me work towards these goals. All of the trainers are invested in the success of the people that attend their classes which is a unique aspect of Training Lab. It is not one of those gyms where the instructors tell you to do something and just let you be. The trainers at Training Lab will motivate you, teach you correct form and most importantly push you beyond your limits.

I can't recommend this gym enough. Do yourself a favour and try it out! Thank you TTL for making it an incredible experience always!

Amazing gym! Ruben & everyone at the Lab are incredible. If you want to see yourself transform, this is the place! You'll amaze yourself with how quickly you become stronger. No one will push you past what you're capable of accomplishing, so, whether you know it or not, try when they say you can because you'll surprise yourself! If you have any injuries, everyone is super knowledgeable and will help you modify accordingly. (Don't be surprised if they even remember it the next time you're in class!) What amazes me most of all is how friendly everyone is, staff and customers alike. Whether it's your first time or you're a regular, you'll fit in like you've always belonged.

Most challenging workout in NYC hands down. Ruben and Colter are motivating and encouraging, they can tell when you need to be pushed and when you need some assistance but they won't let you get away with any slacking! The facility is top notch and the other athletes treat you like a teammate and friend despite the fact that they might not have ever met you before. You might feel slightly intimidated walking in your first time but rest assured you will be exchanging high fives with the rest of the crew in no time. The culture at TTL is different than most gyms, everyone in the class is competitive but also wants to see you succeed, I have found that this is the best combination for motivation because it forces you out of your comfort zone to find the best version of yourself.
