I’ve been a member of this gym for a while, but I’m very disappointed with how they handled a recent billing mistake. Last month, I was charged three times, two of them by mistake. At first, the manager seemed helpful and even said he would return the overdraft fees caused by the double charges. However, that never happened.
Instead, I was told to “solve it with my bank,” and the manager stopped taking responsibility. He didn’t apologize, and kept blaming the bank and the company’s financial department. It’s now been over a month, and I still don’t have a solution.
I understand mistakes happen, but the lack of accountability and poor customer service have been extremely frustrating. I hope the gym improves how they handle billing issues and treats members with more respect in the future.

I joined this gym primarily for access to the pool. During my first swim, I noticed what appeared to be a cockroach or water bug in the water, along with visible rust along the pool’s edges. This raised concerns about the facility’s overall cleanliness and sanitation.
After I pointed out the bug, it was removed and killed with the help of staff and members — but other swimmers were allowed into the pool immediately afterward. This may indicate a lack of caution or adherence to proper protocol, particularly since the presence of such a bug in the pool could itself be a sign of insufficient maintenance.
I’ll follow up once I learn more about TMPL’s pool hygiene and maintenance procedures — specifically, what’s being done to ensure that we aren’t literally swimming alongside water bugs.
Update: The above-mentioned issues remain unresolved as of November 2025. In addition, there has been no follow-up from management with respect to updates on any of these matters. At this stage, the membership no longer reflects an appropriate value for the price point.

I am documenting my experience at this gym due to ongoing situations that raise serious concerns regarding member safety, harassment, and management negligence. For an extended period, certain individuals have repeatedly engaged in inappropriate and unsanitary behavior in the sauna and shower areas. Additionally, a group of clients consistently loiters in the locker room, creating an environment of intimidation and discomfort for other members. My partner and I have been subjected to unwanted attention and behavior that can reasonably be interpreted as harassment.
These incidents were reported to the on-site manager; however, no corrective action, monitoring, or enforcement of policies has been implemented. The failure to address repeated complaints, combined with the lack of supervision in sensitive areas, reflects a disregard for both member safety and the gym’s obligation to maintain a secure and hygienic environment.
Due to these ongoing issues and the gym’s failure to intervene, we have been left with no choice but to terminate our membership. Please consider this a formal record of the conditions that contributed to our decision. If necessary, we are prepared to escalate this matter through the appropriate channels, as the conduct witnessed and the lack of managerial response raise serious concerns regarding liability, member protection, and compliance with workplace and public safety standards.

Over the past year, the quality of TMPL Gym in Hell’s Kitchen has noticeably deteriorated. What was once marketed as a luxury fitness space is now anything but. The atmosphere feels more like a crowded, budget-level gym than the premium experience members are paying for.
It is nearly impossible to get a proper workout, roughly 60% of members are sitting on machines scrolling through their phones instead of exercising. To make matters worse, management is never present on the gym floor. They don’t take walks to ensure everything is running smoothly. Instead, they remain locked away in their offices, disconnected from the member experience.
This isn’t just inconvenient, it undermines the purpose of the gym. Management needs to take responsibility for the decline in member experience. Either limit the number of monthly memberships to reduce overcrowding or enforce stricter policies around cell phone use on equipment. Without meaningful changes, TMPL risks losing the reputation it once had as a serious fitness destination.

I like tmpl a lot. It’s always reasonably clean, as a woman I’ve never felt unsafe (and actually people don’t even really try to talk to me which is great), and they have nice amenities in the dressing room like a cold plunge, hair dryers, and free hygiene items. Lockers are free and plentiful, and all of their products smell nice and haven’t done anything terrible to my hair or skin. Does get a bit busy at peak times, but I avoid that and usually don’t have a problem getting a machine or space. My friend who also goes says classes are amazing, especially stationary bike, I just prefer to do things my own speed.
Cons: definitely pricey unless you go multiple times a week, some of the amenities are broken or useless and yet still there (aka diffusers in the women’s locker room), and in the women’s at least two of the showers don’t get beyond lukewarm but I’m told that’s not an issue in the men’s.
Overall, I wouldn’t go if it wasn’t right next to my work, but I wouldn’t go to a worse gym if it was right next to my work.

This is an amazing gym. It is well equipped with multiples of the equipment so you don’t need to wait long for anything. The salt water pool is rare and wonderful to have in the city. The gym is clean and doesn’t smell like a gym ☺️. More than all that, all the people that work there are warm and friendly.

Not bad, friendly front desk, gym is clean and there’s pool. Class is pretty cool. However, it gets pretty crowded around after work hours, and there’s no place to rest or sit when you want to work / waiting for your classes to start. I wish there’s a proper rest area

I stopped by to find out the cost of a membership. The person at the reception desk said that he was not allowed to give me the prices and that I should look on the website. I've never heard of such ridiculous rules. 😂😂🙈The question is, why is there a person standing there then? That's certainly an interesting approach. Good luck, guys! The level of service is top-notch right from the doorstep👍🏼

This gym is great overall. There’s a wide variety of machines and the space itself is really spacious. But in my opinion the place shines for two reasons: 1) it’s one of few places in the city with a decently large pool and 2) members of the front desk staff, specifically Brittney, Neiko, and Val never fail to brighten my day upon entry. They’re true gems!

The best gym I’ve ever been to. Never too crowded. A good busy. The lockerrooms are maintained well. The trainers and staff are very friendly and helpful and will get you in the best shape of your life. My trainer for instance Sam always keeps it fun and challenging and has helped me meet many of my fitness goals. He himself is physically impressive and so offers a visual aspiration. And the communication with and commitment to his clients is top notch. They have a very good boxing class too that actually teaches you how to box. So happy to be at this gym. And the music is the best!

TMPL Hell’s Kitchen is a great gym! The space is clean, designed with a fun edgy feel, and has everything you could ask for — including a gorgeous pool and refreshing cold plunge that make recovery and relaxation part of the experience.
Steven is a phenomenal trainer — knowledgeable, encouraging, and always attentive to form and progress.
Sam has also been fantastic whenever I’ve needed help with my membership like after my surgery, he handled my temporary suspension quickly and with genuine care.
It’s rare to find a gym that combines high-end facilities with such supportive staff.

I attend boxing classes taught by Eric Nieves as well as do personal training with him. Eric is not only an awesome personal trainer who tailors our sessions to my needs (improving foundations in boxing), his group classes are also the best. The classes are pretty technical and I feel like I am learning so much there. Not only am i hitting my weight-loss goals and seeing rapid improvement in my fitness level, but most importantly i am seeing rapid improvement in martial arts thanks to him. Eric is the #1 reason I go to TMPL regularly and I always look forward to group classes + PT.
That being said I would still recommend TMPL to others who may not have the same focus. The facilities have many amenities and are consistently kept clean. TMPL's front staff is consistently friendly and engaging and outside of peak hours ive never really had to wait for anything. I am really pleased with my membership at TMPL and look forward to going back.

tmpl Hells kitchen, without a doubt, the best gym experience I have ever had, and it’s the perfect fitness sanctuary right here in Hell's Kitchen. It doesn’t feel like a gym; it feels like an exclusive, high-tech wellness center. From the stunning, modern design to the mood lighting, the atmosphere is genuinely motivating.
The equipment is absolutely top-of-the-line, meticulously maintained, and there is an incredible volume and variety of machines—I have never had to wait for a squat rack or a cardio machine, even during the evening rush. They have dedicated zones for every kind of training imaginable.
The real differentiator, though, is the full-sized indoor saltwater pool. Having an Olympic-style lane pool in the middle of Manhattan is a luxury that makes the membership worth it alone. The locker rooms are equally premium—spotless, spacious, and equipped with great amenities.
The staff and trainers are consistently professional, welcoming, and helpful. If you’re looking to truly invest in a premium, results-driven health experience in NYC, tmpl is the gold standard and easily earns my five-star recommendation!

ASK FOR WILLIAM!
Leaving 5 stars review for the personal trainer William!! I started training at TMPL in Jan 2025 without any lifting experience. Ended up training for almost a year with William as my PT and leaving only because I’m relocating. William creates personal programs (at the gym and nutritional), he is invested in each session and is very professional and respectful. He is a bodybuilder so he is very knowledgeable and can work with people of all levels of experience. He also helped my boyfriend fix his form on a few exercise. He will work with you to make you achieve your goals. Can’t recommend him enough!!

pay $220 a month for this gym, and when I tried to bring a friend just for one day, they demanded an extra $50. That’s outrageous and shows how little they value their members. On top of that, the place is not even properly clean for the price they charge. Very disappointing, unprofessional, and definitely not worth the money. I would never recommend this gym to anyone.

This is the worst gym I have ever been to. The staff is extremely rude. On labor's day a short stout and loud Hispanic woman called Ari, who is one of the receptionists, together with one of the trainers whose short and blonde were harassing a member and even the other receptionists who was there on that day. The facility is always dirty and damaged. Nobody unloads the machines. Men are all the time engaging in sexual misconduct in the steaming room. People use their cellphones in areas where it is forbidden by the gym policies to do it. I asked the staff to do something about it several times and they have never responded.

I do not like this gym. I’ve had two separate incidents where I felt discriminated against.
For the amount of money being paid — over $200 a month — this experience is unacceptable. You’re better off spending your money at a place like Lifetime or Equinox. I’ve visited both as a guest and never felt the way I feel as a member at TMPL.
One star. Definitely do not recommend. I actually wish I could give zero stars

Attended a Body Pump class on Sunday — it was fine overall, but the class only lasted 40 minutes and skipped both the lunge and shoulder tracks. At $35, that felt a bit overpriced.
The gym itself seems well-equipped and is conveniently located. However, the two young receptionists didn’t leave the best impression — they seemed more interested in chatting with each other than welcoming customers

4/26 update::: see below.
Addendum: 4/26..the lifeguard being on time issue has been fixed!!!! Love the lifeguards and people here.
My only lingering complaint is with the swim coaches. Last time I had an issue with one not letting me finish a swim due to lifeguards being late. This time it’s another schedule issue with training times and classes and they are not teaching the people that they are training proper pool etiquette. You should check in with the person that you are sharing the lane with. Otherwise that could be a safety issue esp with a person like me that has injuries. And there was an open lane no one was using!!!! Also, I come specifically Saturday morning at 8am because I know that there is a class at 9 and I’ve been shortening my swims to not have overlap.
See I’m adjusting and being fair!
Today the coach was training someone at 8am. And I’ve seen them at 8am before. I know that it is policy that people can pay for swim training and one on one. But I think you need to be reasonable about the schedule and tell people that it’s right before a class and there are several regulars that come in Saturday mornings for years now… that will have their swims disrupted. Either join the group class or let’s pick a more suitable time.
Again the swim coach was very rude and was even siting on top of my stuff that he had pushed out of the way when I got out of the pool.

Love this gym overall, basically the only good option that is truly in the heart of the neighborhood. But can you PLEASE finally fix the multiple broken ellipticals? It has been literal years at this point that at least 3 of the 7 elliptical machines are broken and it makes a really big difference. Or, honestly, just take them out and create another open area for free weights use if you’re never going to fix them.
And add even just one more Roman Chair? Having only one in the whole gym means you’ll never get use on the weekend and it’s hit or miss during the week - it’s not a huge footprint to get one more, and it’s not a pricey add relative to other equipment 🙏

pros: spacious, good atmosphere, pool
cons:
- wifi doesn't work at peak periods. The gym is underground, which means you don't get cell service. Most weekday evenings it takes my recent iPhone roughly 30 minutes to connect to the wifi. It's unacceptable to pay $200 a month for a gym and only have access to downloaded music.
- 25% of lockers don't work, which means at peak periods it's hard to find an available locker that isn't broken.
- sauna/steam room regularly closed for repair
- hot tub has been claimed to be about to open for months. They told me when I joined "you need to join today, before your existing gym membership finishes, because once the hot tub opens, rates will go up, and the hot tub is about to open". That was a blatant lie. The hot tub doesn't look any more imminently about to open than 4 months ago.

I’ve really been enjoying my time at TMPL gym—the facilities are great, the atmosphere is motivating, and the equipment is top-notch. But hands down, my best experience has been with my personal trainer, Jonathan Ramos.
Jonathan is an exceptional trainer who truly goes above and beyond. From day one, he made sure I not only understood my workouts but also the why behind them—helping me build a strong foundation rather than just going through the motions. His knowledge of fitness and nutrition is outstanding, and he takes the time to educate you on how they work together to support your goals.
He doesn’t take a one-size-fits-all approach—he tailors workouts to where you are starting from, making sure they are both effective and sustainable for long term.
Whether you’re a beginner or experienced, he meets you at your level and pushes you in the best way possible.

If you're going to TMPL, I'd recommend Jonathan Ramos as a personal trainer. Over the past few months, he's been great in helping me become stronger and more athletic.
Every session, we do a new series of exercises which keeps workouts interesting while introducing me to all the machines in the gym.
Jonathan also closely keeps track of my progress. He will have me do activities to measure how my cardio and strength adapt to the workouts. Each time, he will design the workout to increase difficulty but he is quick to make adjustments if I'm struggling during a set.
He's also a congenial guy. Always great to talk to and seems to get along with everyone at the gym.

I'm blown away by Coach Eric Nieves boxing class! Hands down, it's been the best workout and group fitness class I've ever taken. Eric’s expertise, enthusiasm, and attention to detail created an electric atmosphere that pushed me to my limits.
The class was meticulously structured, covering technique, conditioning, and strength training. I loved the combination of bag work, partner drills, and cardio exercises – it kept me engaged and challenged throughout.

He managed to build a safe place where most people can find their place. It's almost been a year now and I still really like taking classes with Eric. The way he teaches and cheers you up is something that helped me pushing through my limits!

Review for TMPL boxing classes with Eric.
Eric Nieves’ classes at TMPL Hell’s Kitchen are the perfect blend of real boxing technique and high-intensity interval training (HIIT). His attention to detail and focus on proper form make every session both challenging and rewarding. Unlike other fitness boxing classes that just go through the motions, Eric ensures that you’re learning authentic boxing skills while getting an intense, full-body workout.
What sets Eric apart is his ability to cater to all levels—whether you’re a beginner or have experience, he takes the time to correct technique, offer personalized feedback, and push you to improve. He creates a safe and structured environment where you can develop real boxing fundamentals without the risk of injury.
If you’re looking for a class that combines true boxing with high-energy conditioning, Eric’s sessions are second to none. Highly recommend!

Update: it is now 2025, both rowing machines have been damaged for over a month. Loud clanking noises and gears slipping. The only way to get things fixed is to post here. Also 30% of the men's lockers are now broken.
Update: 1.5 years later and the showers are still cold about 40% of the time. Management doesn't care and ignores emails. I stay because I have a good rate but this gym is absolutely not worth $200/month, look elsewhere. (Also, the response below is a lie, I emailed them about the hot water issue two weeks ago and Layton never replied).
This is great gym when thing work, but unfortunately management does not prioritize repairs, so expect equipment to regularly be out of service. For example, right now both rowing machines are broken, one of them for nearly two months. During the winter we went months without hot water, then during the peak summer heat, the AC was broken for weeks.

Maintenance could be better. About a third of the lockers are and have been broken for months so you are lucky to find a good locker. Additionally an ez curl 50 pound bar which I would assume would be popular disappeared from the gym months ago and there hasn’t been a replacement yet or a sign saying they are trying to replace it.

EDIT:
The current manager did reach out and assured me they're working on fixing the lockers as well as on educating the gym goers to proper gym etiquette as well as asking staff to re-rack as well. They were very polite and accommodating, so I changed the review from 2 to 3 stars just based on my interaction with them
ORIGINAL REVIEW:
Do you like having to remove other people's plates ON EVERY plate-loaded machine you use?
Do you spending ten-fifteen minutes in the lockerroom trying to find locker with a lock that actually works or that isn't already used?
Do you like working out in a dark basement club where the lighting reminds you of a rave in Brooklyn and no windows to the exterior?
Then this club is the perfect club for you!
Come on over! Just remember don't touch those weights after you load up your machine! It's a problem for the next person!

TMPL is well known for its impressive design and attractive environment, as well as the smiling faces greeting you at the front desk. Even the employees who work at the swimming pool and clean the locker rooms are hardworking and friendly.
What I highly recommend and appreciate is coach Eric—he is professional, passionate, and patient. No matter what level you are, he is the best at helping you improve your skills and boost your fitness, making you fall in love with boxing even more. Every minute of his boxing classes is intense and engaging. Because he is so popular among members, make sure to book his classes early! I hope that more of Eric’s classes can be added to the schedule in HK as this is a heartfelt request from many members.
I would like to especially thank Eric for his patience and for correcting every movement detail. I am also grateful to my teammates for their support and encouragement—you are the best!

My favorite fitness club. I love that in this gym, I can find everything: a pool, sauna, various group classes, and great equipment. This variety keeps me from giving up on working out, even when I get tired of one thing.
It's probably the only place where I spend so much of my free time with joy. My power spot.

As a fitness professional and as a professional bodybuilder I must say I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS GYM! Starting with the staff. I travel to NYC often and need to train at a gym that has it all. Every single time I would walk into TMPL it is always a pleasant experience. Smile, check in, purchase a pre workout and grab a sweat tile. Easy breezy.
The lockers are my fave because you don’t need to bring a locker. It’s also fully equipped with towels, lotion, deodorant, steam room and plenty of showers.
The workout floors are set up perfectly and while there is PLENTY of equipment (even at busy times) most people are super cool to have you jump in on a set. With that said, so many guys are super easy to chat with or ask for a spot.
JOINING this gym is a no brainer whether you live in NYC or if you visit often.
Also, they have the vegan protein shakes for post workout. Haha. It’s the little things!
Thanks guys for making it such a great place to train,
Shaun T

I came here while vacationing in NYC because my hotel gave me passes and it was very close by.
The long and the short of it is that this is primarily a body building gym. If you powerlift, you may struggle to find space for everything you need to do, but you'll be able to figure it out. If you intend to clean/functionally train/do any Olympic lifts, I wouldn't go here.
There is a single platform, which was occupied for the entirety of the time I was there. I ended up deadlifting in a narrow aisle between machines, which unfortunately blocked passage for everyone and also blocked one of the ~5 squat racks. The squat/deadlifting area is quite small and packed with other lower body equipment like a GHD, the leg press, a roman chair, a smith, etc., so there is very little room to move around. The barbell selection is minimal and there are no 15kg bars.
The upper body area, by contrast, is enormous. There are dumbbells and benches aplenty. Cardio equipment is abundant.
Personally, I didn't enjoy the aesthetic or the overall vibe. It's very dimly lit, particularly on the lower body floor, and the place is trying hard to be edgy. There are what I would categorize as "selfie stations" around the gym -- neon signs with pithy quips about your ass, for instance.
The employees were all very nice, as were all of the patrons I interacted with.
All in all, I did what I needed to do here, but I probably would have been happier at a powerhouse or a local box.

Has all the things - pool, cardio machines, functional training area and classes. I like that the membership includes what you'd typically get with a gym membership, along with a variety of classes (including yoga and spin), plus the pool, sauna, and steam room. Even during peak hours when it’s busy, it’s not too bad. The instructors are generally great. I deducted stars because I like to do the 45 minute swim lap class, however lately (including the last three weeks in a row) the instructors of the class before it have been running over into the laps class and by the time the pool is rearranged the class ends up only being 30 minutes and we stand there waiting by the pool for 15 minutes.

great gym - pricey but includes everything (classes, cold plunge, saltwater pool, sauna, steam room). The gym and women’s locker room itself is really clean and well maintained - staff are friendly. started personal training sessions with Eric and it has been fantastic especially since I’m coming back from a bad back injury. I can really see the progress and feel a difference in my energy, strength, muscle endurance, and weight loss. Personal Training is separate from the membership and pricey but comparable to other NYC gyms - totally worth it if you’re just getting started or need help to prevent re-injuring yourself! (But seriously, ask for Eric.)

I also did the free consultation and ended up signing up for physical training session as I was embarrassed not knowing how to use all the machines to the fullest. I was paired with Jonathan Ramos who has an exceptional educational background as well as training experience. He’s been a pleasure to work with as he is personable, keeps me accountable, and pushes me every time. Makes coming to the gym that much more enjoyable. Highly recommend him and the gym.
