I had no idea what gyrotonics was when I started coming to this beautiful studio a year ago, gyrotonics truly has brought more awareness and flexibility to my body! I was preparing to walk on The Camino de Santiago and now I continue because not only do I physically feel better but also spiritually! The trainers are all great and Mariana has been my primary trainer but good to know someone else is available if our schedules do not align. It is a nice to be a part of this community. Very much encourage anyone to give it a go!

Village Gyrotonics is a rare, intimate place to exercise…….Fantastic varied Gyrotonics equipment, absolutely amazing staff, seriously caring and knowledgeable teachers, and just the perfect location in Greenwich Village. The studio has a wonderful vibe - studious but upbeat.
I work with Desiree, who is a one-of-kind, spectacular teacher - unusually gifted, endlessly knowledgeable, resourceful, kind, and incredibly intuitive. She is one of the most amazing gyro teachers I have ever worked with, and I always look forward to learning from her…. And I feel like a million bucks after every session. I cannot recommend her and Village Gyro enough!

The first Gyrotonic classes my friend and I took were at Village Gyrotonic, located at 35 Bedford Street in the West Village. When a teacher we liked moved to a different studio, we followed him, and over time, we ended up working with numerous teachers in various locations.
After Covid, when studios began reopening, we decided to return to Village Gyrotonic. The studio is small but very clean, and the equipment is wiped down after every student. Some of the exercises are done using a machine with a pulley system, and the weights can be adjusted to suit each student's needs.
When we came back, the Director recommended a new teacher for us, and we’ve been very happy with Desiree. We continue to do the standard exercises, but she often introduces something new, which keeps the sessions interesting and engaging.
In truth, it’s great fun, and we’re always glad we came.

Going to Village Gyrotonics has been truly life-changing for me. The experience is deeply personalized, and my trainers have an incredible ability to see exactly what I need just by watching me move. Their expertise and intuition have guided me through a physical and emotional transformation that has improved so many aspects of my life. Every session is eye-opening, and I always leave feeling better than when I walked in. Honestly, I’m addicted—this is the best thing I do for myself!

An absolutely wonderful gem of a Gyrotonic studio. The owner and manager ( Esther & Zoe) are kind, attentive, and knowledgeable. The instructors are so smart about how to strengthen and lengthen every part of your body, and they work with injuries, weaknesses and listen to you. If you don’t know what Gyrotonic is, this is the place to discover the miracle of making your spine supply and strong.
A wonderful welcoming intimate cozy West Village experience. Esther and her team of incredible Gyrotonic instructors (and Zoe, who makes everything run so ver smoothly) will introduce you to the wonderful practice of Gyrotonic which can move your body into alignment and alleviate so many different kinds of aches and pains- and this is an enjoyable freeing kind of practice, with some moves familiar to yoga and Pilates but not the crunch and grind. For more experienced practitioners there are- more experienced Gyrotonic teachers! This will be the best thing for your body you will ever do!

I love Village Gyrotonic! The studio is entirely focused on Gyrotonic®️ and it is a very therapeutic environment. I did yoga for many years (still do sometimes) and at some point started to have tremendous pain in my lumbar spine. I tried physical therapy, which didn't really help and yoga began triggering the pain in my back and I could barely walk. A little less than a year ago someone in my yoga class suggested Gyrotonic as it had helped her back issues. Long story short…..I did Gyrotonic 1x/week at first and it decreased my back pain so much, I started doing 2x/week. Now, I do 3x/week because it makes me feel so strong, grounded and energized! I highly recommend it!

I have been going to Village Gyrotonic for 3 years and across two pregnancies. Gyrotonic has taught me how to move my body in its natural state. The care and compassion I have witnessed is amazing not only from my instructor, but from most all of the instructors is heart warming. They truly care about not only your physical state, but how your physical state can help your mental state.

Village Gyrotonic is a revelation. Although I’ve been doing “gyro” on and off for over 30 years at various studios, it wasn’t until I came to Village Gyrotonic that I finally received the level of instruction and attention that has made the work truly transformative. At 66 years old, keeping my spine healthy and my body strong and limber is essential, particularly since I play tennis several times a week, ski, bike, hike and generally try to stay active. Village Gyrotonics has not only made that possible, but has helped me compete without injury and at a level higher than I ever would have imagined. Plus, the trainers there are just wonderful: warm, friendly and caring folks who never push, just gently encourage. Come for the exercise, you’ll stay for the super-chill vibe.

I started taking one on one session at Village Gyrotonic several years ago. I initially went because of neck pain, I could barely turn my head to the right. Now I am pain free. Gyrotonics has helped improve my posture and strengthen my core. I feel more stable and look better in my clothes!
I am still doing it weekly as it provides wonderful body awareness as far as strength, posture, and everyday movements go. In my opinion this is very important as one ages.

After decades of working out at gyms, and because of my age and a back issue, I started Gyrotonics last year. It has become my primary form of movement. It is subtle but very evident that my body is stronger because of it! I just completed a very physically challenging apartment move. I was able to pack, lift boxes, unpack, etc. with zero complications. My instructor Lauren is amazing. Village Gyrotonic is my new HAPPY PLACE ❤️

I came to Village Gyrotonic 2 years ago after I had surgery for 3 herniated discs. I had read that this type of exercise is much better for healing than traditional Physical Therapy alone. Lauren is the best trainer I could have asked for. Her knowledge of the human body is mind blowing and she was able to strengthen my body and get to a much better place physically than before surgery. I was amazed at how knowledgeable she is and how she is able get to the core of my problems. I go weekly and its done wonders for my core strength and movement. I am so happy that I found Village Gyrotonic and Lauren as they've become a fixture in my fitness journey. I can't recommend it to my friends and family enough...anytime someone comes to me with an issue in their body, this is the first place I tell them to incorporate into their healing journey. It's a good addition for very physically fit people, like my marathoner husband, to correct small issues that arise due to over activity.

Honestly, I just love this little Gem of a studio. The studio is tended to by Zoe who makes every one feel so warm and welcome. I study in a semi-private format with Jamila who is present, knowledgable and engaged. She also is great with anatomy and is adept at providing personalized attention. As a long time yoga practitioner and former dancer, I am loving learning a new technique and am finding Gyrotonics immensely helpful and body smart.

I have been a regular client of VG for 9 years. It is the one practice I’ll never abandon because it offers so many benefits for strength, flexibility, alignment and even the alleviation of muscle soreness caused by injury. I primarily work with Jamila at the studio but all the teachers are equally great as is the incredibly attentive studio manager, Zoe.

I highly recommend this studio:
I did something weird to my lower back/right hip while lifting something last year and have been struggling with back stiffness and lower back and hip pain for over 6 months. I had never heard of Gyrotonics until a friend mentioned it a few months ago. I tried chiropractic, pilates, yoga for back pain, cranio-sacral therapy as well as acupuncture and massage to try to heal. All these modalities helped, but it seems that Gyrotonic addressed the root of my issue: I continued to reinjure myself due to overall weakness.
I visited the studio in the West Village, working with Mariana Muller (who is a highly skilled instructor and a gem of a human being!). The staff there are so kind and personable and I could easily get a hold of anyone if needed. Over the course of a few months, Mariana identified the flaws in my alignment and worked with me to fire up the muscle groups that were asleep/immobile. She had me focus intensely on the curvature and flexibility of my spine, not just laterally, as in cat/cow stretches, but on different planes, 3-dimensionally by twisting, which was very awkward at first, but I grew to love these types of movements.
The classes are always different and I feel totally supported. I never need to worry about tweaking my back the way I worry in yoga classes. I love the spinner/slider bar the best, and feel like a big kid, spinning around on the disks! I definitely notice a difference in my posture these days, not just standing and walking, but also sitting (which I do a lot, having a desk job).
I am so grateful that I can now bend forward easily without pain or stiffness. AND I am no longer prone to re-injuring myself - my muscles, sacrum, lower, middle, upper back and neck are communicating with each other in a new way! I recommend trying this modality at Village Gyrotonic.

First of all I have to say its the best exercise practice that I have had in a very long time, and so grateful they are located in the Village, which makes it so convenient.
My biggest regret is that I did not start sooner, because it has helped me deal with so many issues that I have struggled with for years, i.e., lower back issue, knee issues, sciatica, shoulder tension etc.
All other exercises and practices i.e., yoga, Feldenkrais, weights etc, I tried throughout the years including pt, did not help me as much as gyrotonic has in these last 2 years. The benefits are amazing and my acupuncturist who encouraged me to check it out, tells me how much I have improved my body alignment and posture.
Every time I would pass by the studio, I was always so taken by the people that were using the machines and always thought to myself, that must feel really good. Well I am so thankful for stopping by and inquire if I could benefit from it. After the first 2 complimentary private sessions, I signed up for 10 classes, and and then 20 classes and have been totally committed since then.
The exercises are tailored to my needs on a daily basis. I have improved my posture and leaned how to align my body and I feel more flexible and stronger and most importantly I am in sync with my inner body. It has helped me to learn how to breathe and release tension n become aware of my posture and my overall well being.
For the past 2 years it has become part of my life and I love it.
Desiree, my teacher/mentor has been amazing and patient with me but also she pushes me in ways they I never thought it would be possible. I love the challenge! Most of the times I leave feeling like I am on cloud nine.
Hope to continue this practice for years to come.
Try it! You won't regret it!

Village Gyrotonics is a gem in this city of oversized and overcrowded studios! Jamila (patient and fantastic) has been helping me work on core strengthening, flexibility, toning and posture. After 10 years of yoga, I was searching for something a bit less methodical but similar end results, I found it with Gyrotonics! Thank you Jamila, for keeping me in shape, Zoe, for organizing my sessions and for all of your help, and Esther for creating this wonderful and peaceful studio environment!

Village Gyrotonics is absolutely amazing. As someone who has scoliosis and a spinal fusion, I’ve always looked for ways to find more alignment in my body and get stronger despite my limited range of motion. I also sit in an office chair for a large part of the day, and end up holding a lot of tension in my neck and shoulders.
I’ve been working with Jamila for a few months now, and her level of expertise and attention to detail is incredible. Jamila is really good at spotting the imbalances in my body and is extremely knowledgeable about the types of movements needed to strengthen and balance my body. After every session I feel so much more aligned and open, and the tension in my neck and shoulders has noticeably decreased. Not only do I feel so much better, I also feel so much more aware of my body and posture in my day to day life, from how I sit at work to how I walk.
And not to mention that Jamila is super friendly and kind, and also Zoe, the studio manager, is always so welcoming! Village Gyrotonics is truly an amazing studio, and I would highly recommend!

I have been exercising at Village Gyrotonic for over 5 years. As someone who sits in an office chair for way too many hours, working with Esther and Jamila has helped me with posture and lower back issues. As I get older, they have helped me get stronger and, though I am rather short, people think I am taller because of how I hold myself. Highly recommended.

Upon reaching age 86, I relinquished my first violin chair in the Greenwich village orchestra, so that a younger, more adept young player would be able to join the orchestra. Beginning signs of arthritis and lack of stamina contributed to this decision.
But my violin teacher had impressed upon me a life moulding maxim: to always keep your instrument in top functioning condition.
For a violinist, that means replacing strings as they become untrue to the pitch, not letting the bridge warp, and above all, don’t let the wood get cracked.
My real life profession was as an actor, and an actor’s instrument is herself. Her soul, mind and body. And I had long maintained an instrument that was strong, lithe, and as beautiful as I could, with ballet and voice exercises. But here I was, with signs of irreparable damage due to aging, facing an agonizing decision: to do something, or not.
And if yes, what should it be?
Not ballet any more… far too demanding.
My daughters all did yoga and encouraged me to try that. But I found the positions put too much weight on my arthritic wrists and knees. It was not right for me.
Right down the street from my house is the Bedford street Gyrotonics studio. I often passed the window, saw lithe and not so lithe people doing strange exercises on strange weight bearing machines. More out of curiosity than anything else, I decided to go in and find out what it was all about.
I was assigned a beautiful young trainer, Desiree. Right away we hit it off. She explained that gyro, meaning circular, was the basis of the work . I gathered that muscles, which in yoga would be lengthened by lateral poses, would here be strengthened by circular repetitions. The strange machines would assist in helping to isolate which muscles to concentrate on. That normal positions instill good alignment., and that I did not know what normal positions were. It means to respect the lumbar curve, and not tuck your behind underneath. A cultural thing, to a wasp like me. To make the pelvis your floor! To let it swing a bit! Unheard of to a ballet dancer! Another thing was to learn to walk with my feet parallel, not turned out. And although my hair is white and it’s more comfortable to slouch, I must try to keep the torso pulled up and hold the head high.
That was 5 years ago and Covid came during that time. The studio remained open and all the preventative measures were taken to keep everyone healthy. I reached 91 and never got sick.
Desiree never forces me to do more than I am comfortable with. If I get light headed, she is right there with a glass of water. If I get tired doing repetitions she assures me, just 3 more…I won’t say it doesn’t take effort and determination to do the work, but it’s not exhausting.
I was relieved to know that there’s a package plan for payments.
I go twice a week at a time when the studio is relatively empty, but there are times when floor space is at a premium.
I just wish I had this training long ago. But believe me, it’s never too late to start.

I have been going to Village Gyrotonic since 2009. I was used to doing Pilates so when I started Gyro, I was familiar with the notion of keeping a strong core and healthy spine, which informs both practices. They are similar systems because they both insist on flexibility, strength, and alignment, but Gyro expands movement creating a 360-degree body awareness. The one-hour sessions consist of circular and spiral movements that work muscle opposition to find extension. The instructor finds the rhythm and pace according to your needs.
Sometimes, I work with Lauren on releasing tension via breathwork and we focus on my nervous system. During peri menopause I worked with Esther, the owner and master trainer, who helped me manage my symptoms by promoting joint lubrication, increasing bone density, and keeping me centered. My goal is to continue to age as healthily as possible by being a lifelong student of Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis. The experienced trainers and the intimate atmosphere of Village gyrotonic makes it the perfect studio to learn to be at home in your body.

Village Gyrotonic is a gem. A small (three Towers plus another station) independent studio run by Esther Moreno and her excellent staff of trained, expert, caring, and compassionate trainers. You are as likely to work across from a famous actor, as from a neighborhood denizen wanting to maintain a fit body (my reason for choosing gyrotonics), or someone sent to the studio (by a medical or other professional) to rehab an injury. The variety of exercises one can do with the Tower is endless, and Esther's crew seems to know them all, as well as which to apply in whatever circumstance.
When I enter, my trainer Jamila Youngstedt always asks how my body is. She really doesn't need to ask, because she has already accurately assessed its condition, just by watching me walk through the door. For the past 5 1/2 years, Jamila has seen me through both major emotional trauma and bodily injuries. During one six month period, I gained 25 pounds and 'shrank' 2 inches as my body withdrew into itself from stress and anxiety and depression. My twice weekly gyrotonics sessions kept me sane. Through stretching ("traction"), hanging, and relentless arch-and-curl variations, Jamila guided me to a straighter and more supple spine and a stronger body. One day, when I walked in looking particularly crestfallen from unexpected bad news, Jamila put me on a mat on the floor and gave me an hour of restorative care that perked me up both physically and emotionally. Within a year I had lost (most of) the weight and 'grown' by an inch! (I'm still working to regain the second inch.)
Today my spine is straight(er). My posture is much improved. And best of all, this life-long flatfoot now has arches!

I came to Village Gyrotonic as part of a path towards recovering physical resilience after a long illness. As a West Village resident, the proximity to home and the importance to be supportive of a local business in my community were key to my choice.
What I found was a new understanding of the body, new frontiers of movement, fascinating and challenging, revolutionary even, an approach that is very much aligned with what I was looking for and from which we can all benefit.
I am most grateful to Esther Moreno, the owner of Village Gyrotonic and Zoe Brod, Studio Manager, for the warmth and kindness with which I was welcome to the Studio, which has made my experience so pleasant, rewarding and fulfilling. I loved the relaxed, friendly, and very professional environment you provide which helps us all accomplish our goals smoothly and successfully. It was everything I expected and way, way more.
I would also like to especially thank you for having listened to me when I first contacted you and having paired me with the Instructor who was best suited for my needs amongst all your extremely well qualified professionals. I needed a specific kind of Instructor, and you could not have found a better fit for me. This Instructor is Olga Maidan.
Olga's set of skills and experience were instrumental in this training process. She is an incredible Instructor, an accomplished professional, dedicated, vigorous and at the same time, creative, with a keen sense of humor that never compromises focus. She talked "Gyrotonic" to me in a way that I could see and execute it as a fluid, expansion system that allows smooth and harmonious movement. Olga is very hands on, always strives for perfection, wants more of you, which makes you want to push yourself and develop. I felt growth, excitement, an awareness of my body in a way I have never had, discovered specific movements I did not know we had in us (!), had great "break-through/"a-ha!" moments that were almost magical (at least to me). And to top it all, we share the same birthday!
In my recovery journey, I have been fortunate enough to have met and partnered with great people who have helped me get where I am now. That's one if the best lessons and rewards in life - we can accomplish better results together. I have found in your Studio and in Olga a killer combination that I look forward to coming back to as I continue to pursue my recovery goals. Slowly and humbly, I am getting there!
In the meantime, enjoy your summer and please send all in the Studio my very best!
Kind regards
Paolo

Gyrotonic has helped me so much. I previously would work out at the gym, completely unaware of proper form. The result would be nagging injuries and an overall ineffective use of my time. My sessions with Esther Moreno, the owner of Village Gyrotonic, transformed the way I move and feel. I look forward to my session every week. I have become much more aware of how the musculature and skeletal systems connect and move. It has vastly improved my posture and core, and has made me stronger and more grounded. It has also eliminated recurring issues I used to have with my lower back and Achilles.
Esther sees the body very clearly and is excellent at correcting poor form and targeting areas that are tight and/or weak. She is an incredibly engaged, generous, and detail-oriented teacher. She goes above and beyond to help you make profound changes in the way you inhabit and move your body. Highly recommended!

One class at Village Gyrotonic with Esther changed my life, as it led to canceling, four days later, a planned epidural steroid injection for a herniated disc in my back. Village Gyrotonic saved me. Several years ago, following the fourth surgery to the exact same spot on my right shoulder, I remained in constant and excruciating pain. My surgeon recommended that I quit my job as a tennis teaching professional, find a new line of work, and lead a "less active" lifestyle.
One of my assistant pros recommended Village Gyrotonic on Bedford Street. I began working with owner, Esther Moreno. After several weeks mobility increased and I experienced fleeting moments without pain. After several months I realized that I was sleeping through the night and no longer rushing home for ice packs and Advil.
I have worked with all of the trainers at Village Gyrotonic. Each one has exhibited the highest level of professionalism and expertise and offered unique insight to help me understand that movement does not come from one tiny, painful joint. I learned from Village Gyrotonic that the body must work as a whole in order to let energy flow and allow the body to function efficiently.
I continue teaching and playing tennis. I have also taken up rock climbing, gone white water rafting, hiked Mount Whitney in California, cross country skied "The Great Race" in Lake Tahoe and ridden my road and mountain bikes thousands of miles.
I can't recommend Village Gyrotonic highly enough. Esther and her team take the time to understand and design a program for every client. They work regularly with everyone from elite athletes to artists to seniors to moms-to-be. They have brought me from orthopedic catastrophe to - literally - mountaintops.
Village Gyrotonic is a unique and magical place and one which I am forever grateful.

Gyrotonic is an outstanding approach to achieving a strong and flexible body, improving your range of motion in your shoulders and hips, and gaining a stronger and more flexible back. Pilates doesn't come close. The nature of the equipment and exercises allow a really individualized approach. I see people at the studio of all ages (white hair included) and all stages of physical condition, from people who are taking their first steps at doing something physical all the way to athletes. And at Village Gyrotonic, the trainers are expert teachers and such nice people. The atmosphere of the studio is so calm and supportive and down to earth--a little oasis. I'm so pleased with the changes in my body since I discovered Village Gyrotonic. It's an investment in my future health.
