This is without a doubt a very nice gym in NYC! Space is beautiful, Wi-Fi works fine, showers are available, and holds seem new.
The grading system that Vital chose to use is interesting as it is unclear if some grades are half way between a grade, or there are just a few of that color are a certain grade?
The main reason for the 4/5 start is the cost of the gym. Almost 40 bucks for a day pass is more than 2 weeks of climbing at my home gym. As a pretty intense hobbyist who is happy to pay for their hobby, it still felt hard to justify the cost for a few hours of entertainment… but maybe I wasn’t in the NYC mindset?

Don’t waste your money. It’s a $40 day pass for bad setting. Cool facility, maybe a membership makes it more interesting, but if you are trying climbing out for the first time or considering visiting as a member of another gym, either pass or get a guest pass.
Found the setting to be reachy, awkward, and some problems to be uncomfortably tall. Many of the problems are tracking only past the start, and my guess is that if the setters can reach it from the ground they aren’t putting on foot chips for most problems. More than anything else my partner and I just didn’t have fun on the sets here.

VITAL Climbing Gym in Lower East Side is a large, bouldering-only gym that offers ton of terrain and wall angles that is perfect for all body types and skill levels! Since this is a bouldering-only gym, the facilities is quite massive. Larger than most other bouldering gyms, which is one of the greatest features.
The lower level of this gym is the bouldering area. Of course, there is also training boards and a small fitness area. If you would like to workout as a warm-up, cool-down, or just workout in general, there is a main fitness area on the street level. Since this is a large facility, there are single and multiple-stall restrooms, individual showers, changing rooms, and tons of pristine lockers. Majority of the lockers are medium size, with few large lockers. Therefore, I advise you to not carry too large of a bag, in case all of the large lockers are taken up. You do not need a lock as the lockers provided have instruction to lock/unlock their electronic locks.
One interesting point is the levels of this bouldering gym. Unlike other bouldering gyms, this one uses colors that indicate a range of difficulties. So one of the challenges could be easier and is lower in the range, or harder and higher in the range, despite both being the same color. It is an interesting set-up and it does make it fun for my friends and I to challenge all levels of the same color before advancing to the next color.

Worth going to for a membership but not worth it if you’re not a member.
The setting here is great, lots of technical and interesting climbs, more so than movement and bouldering project (though not as good as the setting at GP81). There’s plenty of wall space so if this is your home gym you wouldn’t need to worry about going to others.
For a Saturday it was a normal acceptable amount of busy and thankfully very few kids.
Really my only gripe with the gym is that the day pass is so expensive and if you’re already a member at another gym it’s really not worth it. Either go with a membership or don’t go.

Climbed in a lot of gyms in NY, other vitals included.
Some of the staff here are pretty unhelpful bordering on rude. I stepped out of the "gate" they have and realized I forgot something so I just walked back in and this woman at the front desk hassled me to a point of frustration. Like brother, no one is tryna scam you chill. All of the faculty seem not chill to be honest, and in all gyms I've climbed in in the city typically the faculty are incredibly kind and helpful.
The facilities are nice, clean, it has all the *features* of a premium gym. The routes are mid, but honestly I find vital routes are more casually set, but there isn't a super clear progression between difficulty tiers, which for a smaller gym I forgive, but again vital is a "premium" gym, so I expect more from them, they also don't have a cave which is strange to me.
They also have a total of two publicly available brushes, and both are almost entirely worn down, many of the holds are so blackened by repeated use that they glisten in the light.
No publicly available chalk either.
For those who want to use this as a third space, it's a bit noisy and bustly, but otherwise there's a ton of places to sit and do work, or chill, and I think that's honestly what this gym is going for, with it's classes, and decently sized weight lifting area, and it's affective at that. However as someone who wants to show up and climb and that's it, the routes are only alright, the conditions of the holds are poor, it's expensive, and the people working there are just weirdly not chill.
It's an okay gym with a lot of bells and whistles to woo you over but if you just want good routes and good vibes this is not the place.
Edit: editing this to remark that it also seemed like the new climber training isn't very comprehensive because often times people are not paying attention to basic safety measures/awareness practice.

I love this gym and the Brooklyn location for climbing! The setting is interesting and problems frequently change. This location is newer than the Brooklyn location and has better changing room facilities, which useful when coming from work gear-in-bag.
Unfortunately what makes this location noticeably worse compared to the Brooklyn location is the absolutely awful music they play. Recently it’s been mostly top 100 pop charts over the last few decades, and that music is mostly god-awful. Meanwhile Brooklyn plays actually interesting music that I frequently find myself Shazaming. I’ll be coming to this location less once Brooklyn reset their climbs back to the regular assortment instead of competition climbs.

Definitely the most boujee climbing gym on the planet atm. Probably not my favorite place to sesh but facilities, gym with 2 lifting spaces with a variety of machines and cables and a dozen power racks, full size mirror TB2 and Kilter, and 24 hr access makes it hard to beat....
Best set circuit is white tags (hardest one) not bad projecting spot for the strong heads.
most of the crowd is local students and tech/finaces Bros, definitely not a typical climbing gym vibe.

Made the trip from Central NJ specifically for the tension board. Place did not disappoint. Huge climbing gym. Plenty of variety for all skill levels. Tension and Kilter board. Staff were friendly and engaging. Also a full "regular" gym which we did not partake in. The facility was immaculate. Bathrooms, showers all well maintained. A tad $ but worth the value with all you get IMO. Definitely will return.

I've been primarily a top-rope climber for years and never really liked bouldering, but it turns out it's only because the bouldering experience at other places is underwhelming. This place has converted me into a bouldering enthusiast. The facilities are top notch and well air-conditioned, with many different walls for all different levels of climbers and a full gym upstairs. What really sells it for me is the community vibe; everyone takes turns attempting the tracks, observing, giving tips and applauding when you reach your goals, so it feels like a team sport even when climbing alone or with a couple of friends. I used to be a regular at Cliffs/Movement LIC and grew accustomed to the smell of feet but now I can't go back.

Beautiful gym. $44 for a guest pass is insane. Classic NY thing, maybe slightly above average in this way - it's so nice to be here, but you are made to feel bad / irresponsible about it. You can't truly enjoy it, because it is grossly expensive.

This place is a gem. The class instructors are the highlight for me. They actually care and are very kind. The climbing is fun and I've been enjoying it so far. The weights/cardio section is large but I've spent the least amount of time there. The fabulous Lynn is leading the Yoga program (she used to do it in BK when I went to that location) and I'm just so glad it's all 4 blocks from my door!

I’m not a climber and I only used the gym here, but I had a great experience.
They’ve got some great gym equipments, clean showers, towels, etc. And the membership while not cheap is pretty straightforward. Just a monthly fee and it’s easy to cancel online. I feel like most gyms are kinda shady (overcharges, hard to cancel, annual fees etc) so I’m happy that Vital does things the right way.

This gym is risky for beginner-mid level climbers. It's much easier to get injured than at other gyms because
- the routes are higher, but have risky moves up top
- the mats are softer than other gyms and make it easy to roll your ankle
Unfortunately I can't recommend this gym, it's a very nice facility but climbing is a risky sport and safety is paramount.

I love this gym. I also love to dance as cardio after weight training, my only recommendation is that it should be possible to use all the facilities when they’re not being used for classes, for example the yoga room, it is a beautiful space and it should be possible to use it with all the proper measures so that all members can enjoy every space. It would be great!

I've been going for over a month to this gym and the gym itself is really good. Both the climbing and gym areas have really good equipment, it's never too crowded, it's clean and people working there have always been nice to me.
The one thing I'd really wish they would improve and I think is subpar to the overall level of the gym is on amenities. They do not offer the possibility to rent a locker, which to me makes no sense since they have hundreds of lockers that are always empty. I already need to carry climbing shoes and chalk every day so that in addition to toiletries, clothes, etc makes the bag very heavy which is a pain. Another thing is that they offer a really small bath towel (like a face towel size) and while it's not that big of an issue, for the membership price I'd expect a real towel. I would love management to consider offering the locker rental (for a fee) since it would make the lives of people who commute to the area a lot easier.

I’ve been climbing for a large part of my life now and have the privilege of travelling the world for it. This is one of the nicest facilities I’ve had the pleasure of climbing at. Here’s what I love:
-Wall angle variety
-Old school and Comp style variety
-Full training area with two full boards and an impressive selection of workout equipment
-A beautifully designed interior so the vibes are always great
-Wonderful work space and easy to use class booking apps (for yoga and whatnot)
-Lockers that lock, along with plenty of change rooms and bathrooms
-24/7 access and a slack line
And the list goes on.
I’ve read a few reviews complaining about the music — I love the music and volume personally. If you don’t like more energetic tunes buy AirPods? Also, it’s a gym. Sorry people aren’t trying to climb to Rachmaninoff. Get a grip.
I’ve also read some reviews complaining about the price compared to places in Europe. To that I’d say: we’re not in Europe? Sorry it’s not 14 quid for your day pass buddy and not 12 pence for a pint, this is New York City. 24/7 access with no additional fee for classes is not cheap. Plus, as someone who’s had memberships in multiple states and countries, believe me when I say this one is worth it if you make it worth it. Yes, it’s pricey in general but it pays for itself effortlessly.
Lastly, to those upset about vital not offering guest passes; tell your friends to get their money up.
This gym rocks.
P.S. My only suggestion is to expand the pro shop— would be cool to have access to more gear.

This is more of a review of the general vital memberships. Compared to other climbing gyms where there is a monthly guest pass, Vital does not offer this perk. Instead they provide a once a year guest pass that can ONLY be used on the day of your birthday. For the price of the Vital membership which is already so high, they do not provide flexibility for this single once a day pass to be used any other day that week
I've been a member for a few years now and worry they will raise prices and remove even the smallest perk
Edit as of 2/22 - the LES location smells of sewage when entering

After reading a similar review, I felt like I needed to share my experience too. I’ve been a member at the Brooklyn location for a while and was really excited to check out this gym and try the new routes. But the whole session felt off because of what was likely the same male staff member with tattoos, who made me and my friends feel cornered and watched the entire time. It was really uncomfortable and completely took away from the experience.
I love Vital and what it stands for, but this experience was a reminder that even in spaces meant to feel safe and welcoming, there will always be people who take advantage of that. I wasn’t sure if I should say anything, but reading a similar review gave me the push to speak up. It breaks my heart but I believe it is best if I don't come back.

I came to this gym a few weeks ago around midnight, hoping to get in a good session with friends. Unfortunately, the experience left us feeling pretty uncomfortable. The staff member at the front desk, who had a number of tattoos, was intrusive and made my female friends feel uneasy with his behavior. Instead of feeling like a welcoming space to climb and unwind, the atmosphere felt off, which made it hard to enjoy the session.
It took me a while to write this because I wanted to be fair, but I think it’s important to share. A climbing gym should feel like a safe, supportive community where everyone can focus on the climb—not on dealing with uncomfortable interactions. Sadly, I won’t be coming back.

The Good: the gym is quite beautiful with a nice cafe conveniently located. Climbs are pretty fun.
The bad: The staff. They interact with each other just fine but God forbid you ask a question, need help, or make a mistake. I took my shirt off for one climb I was projecting and as soon as I finished I put it back on, but the guy that came over to tell me that wasn't allowed did it in a way that was so aggressive I felt like I ruined his life. I came up to apologize after and said I didn't know that was a policy and he just shrugged it off.
I've been climbing for 10+ years, mainly for the community, if he is representative of the staff, that they hire, then there are dozens of other gyms in the city I would recommend over this one. Especially if you're just getting started - climbing gyms are generally much friendlier than this

I don’t rock climb and come here because it’s probably the closest to an Olympic weightlifting gym in Manhattan. However they are missing some useful equipment. They only carry powerlifting bars and no Olympic weightlifting bars (this matters if you like doing Snatches or Split Jerks). It’s a safety hazard on your wrist since power bars don’t spin. If they got some more equipment it would be perfect.
Ideally I’d like to see:
- 2x Olympic Weightlifting bar
- Olympic weightlifting platform
- Rogue wood jerk boxes
- Leg extension and leg curl
- WiFi that works downstairs (you can’t get cell signal either)
Rogue sells all this equipment so I’m hoping management will just purchase them since they have all Rogue equipment anyways. I’d even come build the platform if they want to order the plywood and rubber from Home Depot.

The bad: Obnoxious music blasting in your ear and I’m old. Someone pls give the aux to a non-Gen Z worker, not everyone wants to listen to trashstep and trap. For a brand new gym that costs $150/mo, their lights are already flickering. There’s only one water fountain in the climbing area.

Amazing new location for Vital in manhattan, an easy comp to their flagship gym in Brooklyn. The atmosphere is unmatched and the traditional gym and workout spaces are even bigger than the onsite at BK. The wall area, on the bottom floor of the multi tiered open space, is comparable in size to the indoor section of the BK location, and uses the same Vital color scale for the boulders (as opposed to a more traditional V scale, like those used by other gyms and the two existing Manhattan locations, a carry over from when they were a different franchise). Can’t recommend it enough, it’s off to an amazing start. It will also soon be joining it’s sister location in Brooklyn I’m having 24/7 access for members, so that’s something to look forward to, too!

Music was obnoxious, loud, and soulless. Decent number of routes, but not worth the price

So amazing. Amazing interior design. Super cozy atmosphere. Fun problems. Gym is well-equipped (esp for a climbing gym). Friendly staff. Extremely good value. Totally lived up to the hype. Super excited to climb and workout here

This gym is a pretty good spot to go climb. Although the day pass can be pretty pricey ($40 a day) it is a good place to have an outing with friends. They have difficulties that range from beginner friendly to expert. Very friendly atmosphere and very welcoming. The first time you go you will have to fill out a waiver but if you go again after that they will already have you in the system so it is a one time thing.
