The gym itself is great. The community is supportive. And the instructor, Joy, is AMAZING! I have regained control of my body with her Core, Yoga, and Acroyoga classes. Bonus that her classes are also a joy.

I love Arielle’s classes!!! I’ve been to her vinyasa V1 and V2 yoga as well as her yin yoga classes which were amazing she gave great pointers and it was well paced. Her pilates class is so hard core!! Very useful tips and always such a delight as an instructor

Started my yoga and pilates journey here a year ago, very impressed with the instructors. Arielle in particular is excellent at giving breath cues and corrections so I really feel like I’m progressing through my practice, not just showing up to a class.

Been extremely happy with this gym since I joined. As a climber I’m also very grateful for the variety of classes offered every day, especially yoga with Jacob Hoffman and Joy Chen. You won’t regret working their classes into your training.

I climb- a lot.
I have never in my life been to a gym with worse route setting. To call it that is generous. Half of the routes are just plain unfinished- random holds left to confuse climbers. Every single climb is straight up and down, from V0-10. Zero complexity, zero challenge, but of course plenty of money to pay for entry fee. Any stars given by others are likely due to the facilities- decent but tiny weightlifting area and a single treadmill. Truly pathetic β€œbouldering gym”.

TLDR: This is a small youth gym charging big gym prices.

This small gym is filled with pleasant sunlight even in the winter, making it a great spot to meet a friend for climbing & coffee on a cold Saturday morning. However, the cramped facilities and poor management caused me to drop my membership in favor of another gym that is more practical for daily use.

There are two modest climbing walls, and the route setting skews difficult, presumably to keep people from flashing everything & leaving. The main space is filled with light from floor-to-ceiling windows, a rare pleasure in the winter. The exercise area is a wide spot in the hallway with foam floor tiles and a single squat rack. The yoga room looks nice but I've never used it. There are three bathrooms, all downstairs, and a small locker room. All of this is pleasant enough... on the weekends.

However, on any given weeknight, the entire upstairs area (AKA half the gym) is shut down for comp team practice. Expect it to be loud, chaotic, and mostly empty of regulars or anyone of drinking age. Expect the "locker room" I mentioned to become full of 4th graders on a moment's notice. Vital will nonetheless happily charge you full price for the use of 1/3 of their facilities.

All this is to say that I can't recommend the $125/mo membership to anyone out of high school. Even if you went every weekend for a month, you come out $17 ahead buying 4 day passes instead ($27 x 4 = $108). Do yourself a favor and get a key card for any other gym in Manhattan.

I’ve climbed before at vital Brooklyn, but stopped for a few, and I came to this vital for a day pass, and Charlie one of the staff workers helped me out a lot, very knowledgable and also even gave me some tips to avoid getting injured and for some climbs I couldn’t figured out, keep it up guys! Will get the membership again for sure

Great climbing but the it’s a little small and off the regular grade chart. I recommend going to the upstairs area. Edit: I’ve been going here for a year now and they never wash the holds and the set is always sweaty.

This is honestly my favorite gym in NYC. I've climbed all over the city and nothing quite compares to the natural light that floods into Vital West Harlem. I'm also a long time yogi and I was pleasantly surprised to find the yoga offerings at this location to be extensive and super high quality. Really great teachers and a variety of classes offered regularly. The staff are all gems as well :)

It is a great place with very professional staff, nice amenities and multiple climbing paths, 0 to 9, all inclinations and brains to brute force ratios. With the pass you also get access to their other gyms, including the hanging gardens of brooklyn. I am happy I ve stumbled upon them

I absolutely love the yoga classes at Vital!

They have a bunch of class times makes it so easy to fit a session into my busy schedule, whether it's an early morning start or an evening wind-down. The instructors are incredibly skilled and create a welcoming atmosphere for all levels. I always leave feeling both challenged and refreshed, thanks to their thoughtful guidance and clear instructions. It's clear that the teachers are not only knowledgeable but also truly passionate about sharing their practice. I'm grateful to have found such a fantastic studio with top-notch teachers and such convenient options!

One of my favorite gyms in New York City! There is a large front wall which has many slab boulder problems. The cave on the right side of the first floor has tons of fun overhang problems. Upstairs there is a smaller wall, great for kids. There are also yoga classes & a small workout area. Come check it out!

Cool space with some fun problems. Definitely wish this were around when I was a student here. Note that air flow is not the best, the weight training area is very limited, and the padding upstairs is pretty thin. Also, many of the problems are sandbagged, particularly those set by SP.

It's a good gym with interesting routes and a good community. However, it may not be worth the $115/month for everyone. The wall is smaller than most places so you have a limited variety of problems (although they are good problems). The gym area with the workout equipment is pretty small and cramped. They don't have student discounts but they do have financial assistance programs. However, it is not the same thing. I'd rather have student discounts, no questions asked. The $115 is for access to all 3 gyms (west Harlem, east side and Brooklyn) and the Brooklyn gym is much bigger and had a lot more facilities but it's unrealistic to expect people who live near west Harlem to make the trip to the Brooklyn gym 3 times a week. I would pay $115 for the Brooklyn gym, no complaints but I don't see why I'm paying for a privilege I will use maybe once a month at most. No showers is also a little annoying. However, the route setting and staff is top notch and I still enjoy the climbing sessions. It just doesn't feel like it's worth $115/month to me. If they introduced a $75-$85/month plan for just west Harlem, I'd give it 5 stars easily.

Facilities are clean.
Decent variation of problems.
Wasn’t too busy in the time that I was there.

The lobby area is so huge!!
Almost seems like a waste of space?

I like that they have cardio offerings upstairs with a bike and a treadmill. Free weights and campus and hang boards downstairs for stretching and conditioning.

Kind of surprised they don’t have showers here seeing that is it’s a climbing gym? Hm.

Overall it’s a nice place to not think about too much & pull on some problems 😌

I've been climbing at this gym for over 3 years the transition from steep rock to vital has been a mixed bag tho mostly downside from a members perspective. If you're thinking about becoming a member here don't expect to get a guest pass like at other gyms. I have a lot of friends who climb at different gyms in the city, they all have guest passes and this allows us to climb together at least once a month and provides a ton of value to me. no freezing your membership either so if you're a student or have long term travel plans I'd think about that.

On to the things I still love about this gym. First the setting, easily the best reason to climb here and not somewhere else. Consistently has diverse sets of fun and interesting problems featuring all types of climbing even at lower climbing grades, which I don't always see at other gyms. Second the gym does have a small neighborhoody feel, my fellow climbers tended to be very helpful and friendly. This could change as the gym evolves into whatever it is becoming but for now the community is still solid.

Not worth the $$ of new membership. VITAL took away the student membership discounts (70$/m) and only offer (115$/m). It is a great gym but why double the monthly membership fees for access to the Brooklyn location? I don't want to go to Brooklyn XD –– can you offer different membership options / bring back student discounts / or (at least) guest passes?? Because doing all that and charging > 20$ for a 1 day climb pass that isn't even valid for 24 hours is shameless n silly

Source: Google

Haley

β˜… 1

Wildly expensive for what is available at this location. The justification for the $115/month is that you can use the facilities in Brookyln, which are much nicer. However, that's an hour long trek and unlikely to be worth it for most people who frequent this location. I highly recommend going to the Cliffs, which is larger AND still has student discounts. On top of Vital taking away student discounts (because apparently they don't care about accessibility) they also got rid of guest passes and raised the price of the monthly membership.

The gym itself is nice. The staff however were not that great. I had to ask for different shoes 3 times and each time they gave me something that was either too big or too damaged. The atmosphere was also not that warm. It was very business esque.

Update: tried again after about 5 months. A lot of the routes had not changed. The new owners have just crammed as much new routes as they could into the walls as they possibly could

Source: Google

Max Crownover

β˜… 3

If you're new to the area, its a much better value going with The Cliffs. Staff are better, and you have a much greater access to climbing gyms around the city. Membership here gives you access to only here and the Brooklyn location, vs many locations and ropes (with The Cliffs)

This is a good gym, but it’s wildly expensive for its size and amenities. Staff are super friendly and helpful, but no showers and terrible hours make it not a great choice unless you’re a Columbia student and can get the discount.

Downstairs was not bad at all, but honestly their upstairs bouldering space is incredibly unsafe and is the reason for the 2 star review. I got pretty injured upstairs. I will admit it was probably time to get new shoes however the foot jibs when I visited before COVID where so worn down and dirty that combined with my need for new shoes caused me to fall, in doing so I fell straight down and rolled backwards to break my fall as a result I hit the base of my skull on the steel retaining cords. Mind you I'm not that tall of a person 5'6. So my recommendation is to avoid the upstairs area all together, unless they have significantly altered the padding

A small cozy climbing gym. Very good medium to hard climbs. My only complaint about the setting is the lack of easier climbs. Even the easy climbs that are there are way above a 10 year olds level or a ladder climb. That being said, this is a very small problem that doesn’t concern most. Service is amazing but just make sure to bring a card as they don’t accept cash or Apple Pay.

We have called numerous times in a 3 week span asking for group rates yet all they do is say that β€œthey will get back to me” or to email multiple emails in which they never reply. Their facility isn’t that great as well. I suggest trying another bouldering business.

Awesome bouldering gym with great problems for beginners to regular climbers of all levels. Friendly staff. Go to the climbing wall on the second floor for shorter, more technical problems to focus on technique. And the first floor has a great mix of all sorts of fun and challenging bouldering problems!

Really cool gym! It’s on the smaller side but I’m guessing that if you live up here it’s a pain to travel to other gyms and honestly you don’t need to. The upstairs wall is really technical short climbs which I loved even though they’re mostly above my level (V2w occasional V3).

Really great use of the space on the lower level which is where all the longer climbs are. Had a blast! Would go all the time if only I lived closer!

Great employees and chill during the mid day. Routes change regularly to keep it fresh and interesting.
