The Adrian Shuford YMCA is a great gym with an awesome community. I always enjoy chatting with Debbie at the front desk, she’s such a sweetheart and always makes my day. She’s super friendly and even knows me and my friends’ routine of hitting the gym and then playing basketball afterward. It’s always a pleasure seeing her, and she truly deserves recognition for how welcoming and kind she is.

Crooks!! I’ve been paying for a membership that I have used literally once. I’ve been paying for almost a year. They tell me I need to pay $69 for a canceled payment. I’ve payed a lot already. Why pay stupid high prices, have dictated hours of operation, this place has been updated and still looks old. If anything give your money to the hickory. It at least has nice stuff. And I ain’t paying nothing and that includes attention.

I have nothing against seniors using the Y as I am as well. However, some come to only socialize. On numerous occasions, I have had to work around them as they sat, conversing and occupied the equipment for long periods of time. Then there are those who stand and converse at the front desk irrespective of clients or soon to be patrons who may have legitimate business or questions. Be considerate and move on! Why should I have to drive to Hickory to enjoy a workout. Not to mention the clicks in silver sneakers that congregate and save seats and chatter. Staff and instructors be professional and gently enforce the code of conduct so that all paying customers are treated equally.

My family and I have been members at Shuford for over 15+ years and have actively been paying the entire time even during the times we haven’t gone as much. I would consider us good paying loyal customers. The people you should care about. Both of my children have went through the daycare programs here, my son Cooper Witherspoon has played for the YMCA basketball, baseball, and soccer programs from the time he was 5 to 11. They are now old enough to go on their own but don’t want to anymore because the staff bullies my daughter about her clothing every time she comes in (which she has been a lot here lately) my daughter is a FULL TIME STUDENT at LR graduating this year, FULL TIME ADVOCATE CHURCH GOER, great human being. They remind my son every time he walks in of all the things he “cant” do. They follow him around waiting to tell him what he can’t do next. Instead of doing the proper thing like maybe showing him what he can do? Crazy concept, they call it customer service. One of their staff members called my daughter a liar yesterday as they harassed my son about how old he was, when my daughter told the young lady she replied, “Are you lying to me”? Why would you ask if you would assume that she would lie? I know that you have their birthday in your system if you thought she was lying why wouldn’t you go to the system and find out? These kids now teenager and adult have been coming to the Y since they were born how do you as a staff not know who they are? I would assume a level of care would have to come with that. After reading some recent reviews my kids aren’t the first ones to be harrassed. I’m no crazy, and this is the first one star review I have ever left for anyone, you can fact check my Google profile. I hope you will make this right. I will be making a trip with my entire family to come see you tomorrow. I will keep Google updated on how that conversation goes.

*Edit, we cancelled our membership after 15 consecutive years. My daughter and son joined Planet Fitness down the road. They don’t get harassed about their clothing or bullied by the staff. Be cautious of this YMCA it’s the ownership that has buried this place into the ground.

Love that they open at 5:00 a.m. or sooner Monday through Friday. I get to go in for a quick 15 minute warm up to get my day started. I've lost a few pounds in the process and am looking forward to losing a lot more. Everyone is so nice when I come in, in the morning. No problems in the afternoon usually getting on an elliptical for an hour after work.

I was talked into paying a membership fee for this place in order to enroll my daughter into childcare. Being told to sign up for there membership and that they would pull my account and have my daughter enrolled. Of course they had no issues billing me but I have received zero phone calls from Holly about this. Seems to be a way to get people to signup for more memberships. This place has been super sketchy from the start and the only way to cancel is for me to come in person. I highly recommend you look for child care other places.

I have just recently joined the Y so that my kids can swim for the summer, and the only time they can access the pool is 7:30 pm; otherwise, it's for swimming lessons. As members, we have no privileged. It more commercial than family business here . We regret joining this gym.

I haven't attended this YMCA for a full month. They do have the workout equipment that I need for toning and strengthening. When I asked the staff to show me around I was given a half tour. 2 particular staff, are extremely rude and disrespectful. After paying for an after-hours pass one of the staff refused to give the key for after-hours. I had to take off work in hopes of encountering another staff to get the key. When I was finally able to get it, it didn't work. I attempted to explain that to Krystal (staff) and she treated me as if I was less than her and a liar. I have never attended a YMCA where the staff refuses to help until this one.

Every time I go in here there’s women wearing just sport bras with leggings, cut off shirts, very short spandex shorts, you name it… but a little bit larger girl’s (me) shirt rises up showing her belly a little bit while doing floor exercises… I wasn’t even aware of it… and is told she needs to change by a young male employee. Extremely embarrassing and discouraging.

Worst daycare staff. Do not send your child to the daycare at the conover ymca. They treated my child horribly. I kept giving them chance after chance and i got tired of the excuses and pulled him out. Dawn does not know how to run a daycare and definitely does not know how to treat kids or the adults. Upper management is even worse. They will not do anything to help.

This men’s locker room in Conover is a complete train wreck. This is the only Y I’ve been to in my life that lets people rent their locker and keep a lock on it. On any given day, you are lucky to find 5 open lockers. Of those, maybe 3 have the locking mechanism intact. The swimsuit dryer sounds like it’s about to launch through the ceiling. The only toilet is clogged up most of the time. 3 of the showers constantly leak a ton of water (I can’t even imagine how much water is wasted every month here). A bunch of high school kids pour a gallon of water on the dry sauna every night. (I wonder if that’s why it was broke today (7/10/22)? Anyway, this is a case of “I have to go here because there’s nothing else.”

The director and staff at this daycare are the worst I have ever seen or heard of in my life. There were so many questionable things that happened while my children attended this daycare. It was a complete nightmare. My daughter was in the infant room. Bottles were propped. The teachers most of the time did not feed these children themselves. They would wipe their noses with rough paper towels in the winter, and most of the children would have bloody, scabby noses. I have four children, and NEVER have I seen anything so horrible. It took forever to heal. My son was 3 and non-verbal for the most part. At one point he had broken his leg. The director, Dawn, refused to allow him to return unless he could participate in all of the activities the other kids participated in, including, but not limited to playing outside. My son would drag his leg along and try his best to keep up with other kids. They were so inattentive with the babies. It was almost cruel. I did not see a teacher in that infant room smile at a child once. Dawn, the director, did not interact with the kids at all and always had a scowl on her face. I can't think of anyone that is less qualified for her job. How does a person who doesn't like children WORK with children? They seriously need to be closely monitored by a higher agency. The daycare is ran like a prison for children. I was so relieved when I was able to find another facility with an opening for my kids. I got them out immediately. Even after leaving, they attempted to continue charging me. Whatever you do, please do not put your child in this environment. It's not loving. It is not attentive. They simply show up for a paycheck, not because they love your kids.

I have been going for 5 years and I have met the best instructors along the way. Now that a jealous individual took charge of the gym everything went down hill. It's so sad to see the best instructors around leave due to this sick sick person that not only lies but is fake as to no tomorrow. If ppl would truly pay attention it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see which ones are fake and will do anything they can to ruin it for others. This person is not one others even feel comfortable to be around. Until the head lady of the fitness crew is gone I would not recommend going. I wanted to sign my kid up for the summer program...the director took one look at my special needs child and said I can already tell you this won't work he said I could waste my money if I wanted and assured me if I bought him he would be calling me within 2 hrs of him being there to pick him up and not return..then as I was talking he answered his cellphone and walked off and didnt return. So hateful, I can't believe the ymca behaved this way and I would think that even though they couldn't accommodate him they would've been professional especially children with disabilities. My child left crushed that's how harsh he was...disgusting!
