I love the mission of the studio. However, the last several vinyasa flows have been very disappointing. I think they should reevaluate the way they label their classes. The class that I took today should’ve been called micro movement for strength instead of vinyasa. I understand that vinyasa is linking breath to movement but when you pay $20 for a specific class you hope to receive a more flowing class. The vinyasa I took before today was more of a toe workshop. If they were labeled more appropriate expectations would be more manageable. I can’t imagine I’m the only one who feels this way.

Amazing place! I find this place to be peaceful, respectful, friendly, and the instructors are awesome. You have several styles of yoga classes to pick from.
A few hints for improvement:
some instructors give instructions in such a low voice that while it may seem smooth, some people may find it hard to hear, especially with music in the background.
Restorative yoga should not mean only four poses in an entire class
It would be nice to have classes by actual different levels of difficulty (all gentle and all regular vinyasa are at almost the same level of skillfulness), and these are the majority of the classes offered.
In general, a great place to practice and also add knowledge with some interesting special seminars and the like.

First day at Asheville Community Yoga today! Wow, the energy of the place feels so grounding and alive. It’s a beautiful space and I found it so empowering that they’re helping the community with accessible yoga! Lindsey was the instructor today, and she was incredible. She seamlessly weaved yoga teachings into life teachings, which really helped my mental state personally. She is a true healer! ❤️🌈

BEST YOGA STUDIO IN ASHEVILLE! It’s a breath of fresh air finding a community centric yoga studio that isn’t solely after profit. There were times I couldn’t afford yoga memberships, so I am grateful for the accessibility this beautiful place provides.
ACY feels so welcoming for all and every person I’ve brought here loves it. My fav class is the Yin Yoga with Josie but all instructors are amazing!

Truly what yoga should be. Went super deep in restorative, learned new poses I never knew before - and I’ve practiced yoga for years and then in the didgerdoo class I was in an out of hypnagogia. I processed things in such a deep way.
Thank you for your donation based approach and stunning studio as well.

Asheville Community Yoga.... the name says it all. Whether you are brand new to yoga or have been practicing for years, this is an amazing place to find community and yoga. On the community note: the more you give to ACY, the more you receive. It's a great place to develop friendships through shared practice and shared values.
I've lived (and practiced yoga) in a few different states and cities and I have to say this studio is hands down the top! I'm amazed by how well their formula works: they are a nonprofit made possible by donations and volunteers with a mission to make yoga accessible to everyone, regardless of your ability to pay. They suggest you donate $10-$20 per class if you can afford to, but if all you have to give is $5 (or nothing at all), your presence is still welcome and appreciated. This is absolutely incredible considering most studios are charging $20+ for a class these days.
I have volunteered here from time to time at the front desk and I think this studio is particularly welcoming to new people who have never practiced before. If you let them know you're new to the area/studio, or new to yoga all together, they'll give you a tour of the space and suggest some classes that are a good fit.
Lastly, the quality and variety of the classes is exceptional. They've got warm classes, gentle, senior and chair classes, yin, restorative, LGBTQ+ classes, classes with live music, and yoga teacher training, among other offerings. The instructors are knowledgeable and welcoming and some of the best you'll find anywhere. Again, I'm amazed by this place and the people who make it happen.

I have been going to ACY since its inception and I love it even more now than when it began. It has grown yet has kept such a sweet, community feel. Everyone wants to be there, from patrons to teachers to staff, and that welcoming feeling is shared with us all. Some wonderful teachers, (one of my favs is Sylvia!) and workshops. The place is pristine, just as a yoga studio should be. Pay what you can and still feel like they want you there. This attitude could change the world if broadened to the wider community and that's the goal of this special place!

My favorite yoga place! Only wish it were closer and I'd be there every day. My favorite instructor is Josie- she's fun for kids and adults! You can reserve ahead of time online and you'll have a mat and all your accessories set up for you beforehand. Classes have gotten tight before but the last few times, it's been super comfortable. I'm tall, so I need more space in between and I'm grateful they space them more comfortably now. Affordable and the vibe and grounds are exactly what you want in a yoga studio...

This studio has been a sweet and beautiful yoga home for me for over 10 years. The staff radiates genuine warmth, welcome and
goodness, and you can tell they feel valued and enjoy being there. There are abundant offerings: - classes, workshops, community building events, volunteerism, a commitment to DEI, and more - all nestled on a beautiful campus that represents the integrity of the organization and its alignment to the values of yoga. This is a place that is helping us all live into the more beautiful world we long to know.

If you are from out of town and need a studio to maintain your practice while you are travelling, you couldn't pick a more welcoming, easy place to drop into. They have ALL the mats/props you need (all you need to do is show up!). ACY is a unique yoga studio that should serve as a model within the industry--it's a place for connection, community, and friendship, on top of outstanding and extremely high quality yoga classes, yoga teacher-training, and weekly specialized workshops. If you live here in Asheville and haven't tried it, you should make it a point to try a few classes. I've taken at least 150 different classes with probably 25 different teachers, and never had any less than an amazing experience. I've learned so much from this place. I am heartened that they are a non-profit and a donation-based studio, serving any person at any economic level, regardless of how much they can contribute. They are open to any person, regardless of faith, race, gender-identity, age, or prior experience with yoga. Hats off to the staff and board who have built this into one of the most interesting non-profit models I've ever come across. And my review wouldn't be complete without mentioning that they truly put "service above self", assisting other local non-profits, organizing service days for participants to contribute time to other worthy causes in and around Asheville.

I first attended a class at this studio in December 2023. I remember how open I felt when I first entered the space. The practice spaces were immaculate and I really appreciated the complimentary blocks, blankets, bolsters and MATS! Why do some places charge for mats? Yoga philosophy was married expertly with the yoga poses and the class left me with tears during my savasana as I let the open feeling expand even more! I am now now regularly attend classes here and it now holds a very special place in my heart. They regularly schedule volunteer opportunities and their pay-what-you-can policy speaks to their dedication to the community. Thank you guys for what you do!

This place is nothing short of a miracle. The staff, teachers and other students are so welcoming and kind. The walk from the parking lot to the door is carefully thought out and peaceful...And then you get inside! Such a beautiful place, soothing, lovely, clean, and tasteful. The yoga studios are calming and so pleasant. From the lighting to the music, the colors to the (careful lack of) smells, the care put into the experience is very evident. There is a joyful sense of community here. The spirit of volunteerism creates a very loving vibe. Many people have been here for years and years, and new ones are always welcomed. If you have not been here before, it is really worth checking out. This is a special place. It has survived COVID and Helene for a reason. The community keeps this place going because it sustains us. The teachers here are incredible! What a gift you have before you if you are in the vicinity to practice here.

I've never really tried yoga or meditation before coming to the Center. In fact the funny thing was I was intrested in this girl named Crista Rose Ellis. However, even though that didn't work out I still learned a great Deal. The ability to Link Breath with Movement seems to be one of the Keys 🔑. The ability to remain Still even though every onuce of your body is screaming in Pain weither it be physical or emotional. The ability to relax and Gently flow within Ying and Yang. I have so many good things to say about Asheville Community Yoga that it is difficult to summarize here in a review. This time last year I was unwell...physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. I knew I needed to do something transformative. I chose to do the Yoga Teacher Training at Asheville Community Yoga. The experience of this training was truly transformative and healing in greater ways that I could have ever imagined. I learned a lot about the teachers of the training and the way this yoga center runs , and learned they truly implement their ethics in action, including financially. I am truly impressed. I stand by Asheville Community Yoga whole heartedly. I continue to be impressed with the yoga classes offered, the staff, the teachers, the commitment of the volunteers, the clear energy of the space, the cleanliness, and the accessibility. Asheville Community Yoga is walking the talk and doing the work to ensure yoga is accessible and the space is welcoming to all. Asheville Community Yoga helped improve my life and make me a better person, and I see the way it is doing this on a community level. A full circle of abundance of divine energy flow through teachings and practice of yoga. I'm forever grateful.

Tomorrow, for the first time in two years, I will not be going to teach yoga at ACY. While I still feel loyal to the studio where I trained, I have a higher sense of loyalty to my fellow POC & queer folx, and I would be remiss to remain silent and not warn you that many of us have been injured and made to feel unappreciated and unsafe at ACY. There have been numerous incidents but, what’s worse, a repeated choice to keep these episodes unaddressed and hidden. ACY says they want to “create healing” but are unable or unwilling to say how or when. Whenever I’ve asked why they can’t acknowledge they’ve made a mistake, apologize, and pledge to learn and be better, I have not gotten an answer. I hope that at some point they really do take steps toward growth. I’ll be watching. But I cannot stay in this toxic environment, much less be a part of it, or even have my name associated with it, until I see some earnest efforts to make changes and achieve true inclusivity –perhaps even adding it to their Mission Statement! I do think there is some beauty at ACY —despite its narcissistic leader, not because of him. I hope you’ll find what you’re looking for there, including a sense of safety and belonging. But if you’d like an alternative for pay-what-you-can yoga, look me up. I’ll give you a private class. With respect and love,

I have taken the Virtual Yin Class on zoom with Katie Freshman and she is a great teacher.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND ASHEVILLE COMMUNITY YOGA 😊👌
I have been going to the online donation based classes often because I find them sweet and refreshing.
Yin Class is excellent— Katie has a peaceful way and it is beautiful !!!
The spacious breath and movement she instructs helps to both relax and strengthen. Wonderful ! Katie’s class keeps strengthening and stretching and relaxing !
Asheville Community Yoga continues to have great online yoga classes —- pricing on sliding scale and free as well!
Great way to do self care during the pandemic especially online with zoom in the safety of home—-learn or practice yoga to help yourself at this time —- brings a sense of peace and strength —- try it—- so wonderful to practice with dedicated teachers ,
1/25/ 2022 UPDATE!
Asheville Community Yoga offers such wonderful support to the community — how beautiful is that!
Since I am out of state, it has given me the opportunity ( via online classes) to stay fit physically and mentally and have interaction with wonderful teachers and other yogis!
My hope is they will be able to expand the online classes to ‘zoom’ some of the in-studio classes too !!! How good would that be!
They get a 5+++++ Star rating and deserve it 100%!!!!!

I used to love this place. I discovered it shortly before covid and felt I was truly accepted. However now they require proof of vaccination. I find this discouraging and ironic. Their mission is yoga for everyone. Yet if you do not conform to the "new normal" you are not accepted. I desperately need a place like this used to be, but I do not agree with being vaccinated. I have that right. Just as everyone else does to disagree. And online yoga videos are not the same. I could buy a dvd of yoga or Google something easily. The experience and energy of a real class is what people need.

I used to really love this place and considered it to be my “church” but the fact that you need a vaccination and not proof of negative test results for covid is quite baffling; since you are still able to pass covid from one individual to another, even with being vaccinated. What a shame..

This place is wonderful ! Its a 501(c3) nonprofit so most instructors are volunteers and the classes are donation based. Although in person classes have been scaled back somewhat since Covid there is still a nice variety to choose from each day, and also online classes. There’s also a program to become an instructor.
The place has a nice vibe and the staff are always friendly and welcoming. The instructors are excellent and you can choose an easy or more challenging class depending on your current experience level or where you are at that day.
I arrived early for class to take these photos. Not shown is Studio B which had a class in session

I watched the community around this studio build itself through critical years and was part of assisting with karma projects early on. Jodie...Michael...sweet, sweet Wendy...whoever is reading this, please don't give me the same copy-and-pasted response as all of these other people who have tried to raise genuine concerns about your studio.
Your current policies are a tremendous misstep and will be looked back upon as such in the years to come. Discrimination based off of your current under-informed position is erroneous at best. Of all organizations, I figured you'd be one to shine a light through this madness - looking at global trends and not living in the echo chamber of an elitist United States - before enforcing deeply politicized regulations that impact your community on such a scale.
This is appalling, yet it provides even more of a push for all of us to dive into our own practice. Thanks for your role in this <3 Namaste away from Asheville Community Yoga

And before you respond with, "It looks as though you have yet to attend a class at our studio. Have you been here before?" Yes, I have been there before. I have taken a couple of yoga classes there. I have shopped at the "Zen and Now" clothing shop. I have had food at the Karma Cafe when it was open. I have sat outside at the little pond with the fountain. And as much as I like the atmosphere for your yoga studio, I have to leave a one star review on the fact that you will not let people who have not been vaccinated attend classes. Despite having medical exemptions due to current medical conditions that would increase the likelihood of adverse reaction to the vaccine. Those who have religious exemption. And to not even consider those who have antibodies from natural immunity (which has proven more protective than the vaccine.) Because of this discrimination, I will no longer come here for yoga classes. If you are going to respond with the same thing you write to everyone else - that your records don't show the reviewer has been there, I will be happy to call, give you my name, phone number and email that I registered with for classes. You might not find my email, because I unsubscribed from your newsletter when I found out unvaccinated people were not allowed. Sad. Sad. Sad. Such discrimination takes place in a facility that is supposedly promoting unity, well-being and equality.

Asheville Community Yoga continues to make a difference in Asheville and in my personal life. Having started yoga just a little bit before covid hit, I was so happy and relieved that ACY found creative and inspirational ways to keep up their teaching and daily practices on-line. And now that we can be back in person (inside and outside!), I'm thrilled that I can continue learning from, and practicing with, such an amazing group of people. Thanks so much to all the instructors and staff at ACY!

Asheville community yoga is such a beautiful gift to the community! For me personally they have been an amazing refuge from my medical school rotations especially during the stressful time of the pandemic. I love their outdoor space, evening classes, and that they're donation-based on my student budget. In particular, Emily's Thursday night classes are my favorite part of my week and always keep me going :)
*Also their covid precautions have made me feel so safe and not afraid of putting my loved ones and patients at risk!

A great place for yoga. The instructors are very talented and friendly. It is a nonprofit organization with a sliding scale. I am a reviewer of few words. I can not say enough good things about community yoga. I’ve been going for years and it’s truly like going home every time I arrive. Absolutely the best yoga studio and community I’ve been to anywhere in the world. I feel lucky to have found them years ago. They have a huge variety of classes all day every day, online, in person and outside! Unbeatably accessible to the entire community, donation-based, community supported, pay what you can, tons of awesome teachers- most of which are volunteers. Honestly, ACY isthe first and only yoga center I’ve experienced that is truly for the community itself, the whole crew there is all about making the practice of yoga available to all. I am so thankful for the place and everyone who works and volunteers there. Thank you for requiring proof of COVID vaccination to keep the community safe and sustainable.

I believe in ACY’s mission and payment model (pay what you can), celebrate its inclusive and calming energy, appreciate the management and staff who are welcoming, cheerful and professional, value its implementation of Covid safety protocols, appreciate the studio’s cleanliness, really love several of its teachers (with many more I haven’t had the opportunity to practice with yet), and leave every class feeling renewed.

Non Stop Efforts
I've been going to this studio several times a week for 7 years now. New to Asheville at that time, the concept of a Donation Based Studio blew me away.....never heard of it. What was more surprising to me was how welcoming, clean, well managed, and caring this effort is and has always been. Wonderful management, staff, teachers, and class variety. Their success is due to all of this and the resulting support from the community that has afforded amazing growth without compromising it's original intent. Tough decisions have had to be made relative to COVID policies, but they were done with care and respect for those on either side of the vaccine decision. So grateful to call this my home yoga studio.

I've attended a number of classes there - both recently and pre-pandemic - and have been enormously impressed with both the quality and knowledge of their instructors, and the very comfortable presence and thoughtful help of their staff. I'm additionally thankful for their concern for the safety of staff and guests, as recently shown by their requiring both proof of COVID vaccination, and the wearing of a mask for all indoor activities. This makes eminently good sense to me. At this point in time, I would not attend without these precautions in place.

As someone new to yoga, I was very nervous to go to my first ever yoga class and didn't know really even where to start! I live in the Burnsville area where we have no yoga, unfortunately, so I knew there would be some driving to do. I came across ACY's website and was immediately blown away at how thoughtful they were to give "new to yoga" folks the guidance needed to figure out which class is right for beginners. I also love the fact that they are a donation based organization with the wellness mission of making yoga accessible to everyone! After my first class I was hooked. I now drive the 70 minute round trip to the studio at least twice a week for classes with Emily and Dana, and do the online classes with Jot, both Live and Recorded, at least twice a week. I have NOTHING bad to say about this organization, its VOLUNTEER instructors/staff, or its facility...including the awesome little thrift store inside called Zen and Now. I encourage everyone to begin, or continue, a wellness journey of their own and, if that journey includes yoga, to consider becoming part of this community. Thanks ACY!!

ACY walks the walk of the yogi talk... offering accessible classes for all is the foundation of their amazing services. I enjoy their variety of classes offered and love that I can invite a friend regardless of their ability to pay. I have been to many other yoga studios in town and stopped going due to their high prices or more importantly, lack of diversity. I also appreciate ACY's different opportunities to invest in the studio either by monthly donations, donations for their gently used thrift store items, their café (which is temporarily closed), or donations for other services which are also halted right now. ACY 💓🧘🏽♀️✌🏽 Grateful to have this place in town.

I had heard positive things about Asheville Community Yoga from people close to me, but only relatively recently (now that I'm vaccinated) have decided to venture to check it out. When I arrived, I felt awe in how the center was so beautiful, so peaceful, and lovely to just *be* in; the people who greeted me were so friendly and just radiated kindness and welcoming. My first class of gentle yoga with Joe felt so moving, it actually brought me to tears from the emotions I felt. I keep coming back and enjoying the peacefulness and present-ness I feel in my body and spirit from attending class. It's also so beautiful how Asheville Community Yoga uses a donation-based and volunteer-run model to make yoga more accessible! As a student with a tight budget, I don't think I would have joined *any* yoga center, even though I've been wanting to get into the practice and have been trying YouTube videos. It's awesome to be able to practice with a community while donating what I can, and I feel good supporting this place for each donation I offer :)
