Update: The current manager was very attentive to our concerns. She reduced the fragrance blowers and worked hard to ensure we are satisfied with the services. Based on my very positive interaction with her, I’ve updated my rating to a 4 and would recommend the school to others.

My son is a better swimmer since starting the program and there are convenient class times. The facility use several fragrance sprayers that caused an allergic reaction, the coaches look unhappy, and the staff and manager could use some customer service training. I’m glad we went there because of the skills gained, but are looking for a more friendly swimming school.

My son has been with BBSS Apex for over a year and half and we never thought about leaving. The facility is spacious, clean and well equipped. We signed up for a trial lesson and I reached out let them know that my son was special needs and didn't do well with crowds. I got the confirmation to move forward with the appointment. Our time was 5pm, we literally walked in at 5:07 I came up to the check in the lady said Hi, unfortunately because of our 10 minute grace period , we will have to reschedule. Mind you, we drove from an hour away. Meanwhile my son is staring at the pool wanting to go in. There were a ton of kids and a lot going on, but he was just excited to get in the water. He started to have a meltdown when told he couldn't go in. After voicing my frustration about this they let him in for a few minutes but he wasn't able to focus so we had to come back out. The manager Tatum spoke with me and said she would reschedule my son for Friday at 9 as the pool would be almost empty and he'd have a better experience. I call on Thursday to confirm. I was told the appointment wasn't on the trial schedule but that he was probably on the private one and I should come. After another hour long drive Friday morning, we get there just for an assistant to tell me we aren't on the schedule and that Tatum never confirmed anything. I told the assistant I met and spoke with Tatum that Monday and she personally scheduled it. The assistant walked away and called the manager on the phone, they spoke for about 10 minutes.She came back with the same story no talk of rescheduling just a message from Tatum that she never confirmed anything with me. When I asked to speak with her the assistant said, I'm sorry this is her day off and she said she won't be speaking with anyone until she returns. A completely unprofessional and disappointed experience. It showed me that this company is not helpful or willing to provide services for special needs kids and their families.

There is a constant rotation of instructors, which has been very difficult for my kids. Every time a new instructor comes in, they start fresh, leading to a lack of continuity and consistency. This instability has made it hard for my children to make progress. Unfortunately, the quality of instruction has not met our expectations either. Both my grandkids swim at Big Blue swim school and I truly can't believe how much their skills have grown!
When they began their swimming journey, they both had almost no confidence and lots of anxiety. They started with coach Alexandra - she grew their confidence, trust, and love for the water. Coach Paige and coach Jamie have continued to help them continue to grow their skills.
Aside from in the water - the environment is incredibly welcoming and the facility itself is maintained clean. The front desk staff and managers are always more than willing to help and the communication has never failed to impress us. Not to mention, they have wonderful spanish speaking staff as well/incluso hablan español. Our family loves Big Blue and would recommend them to all families!

Unprofessionalism and Lack of Accountability

We joined Big Blue Swim School with high hopes after leaving our previous school due to constant coach turnover. During enrollment, we were clearly assured that coach consistency was a priority — unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case.

Over the last six weeks, my son has had six different coaches, often with no prior communication, or notifications sent after the class had already ended. Just last week, the Assistant Manager assured us via email that Coach Libby would remain with him “for the foreseeable future,” yet today, he had a new coach again.

Equally frustrating is the lack of structured progress updates. We’ve had to repeatedly ask for feedback, and when we did receive it, it was outdated or vague. At this point, it feels like kids are being held at the same level longer than necessary — possibly for business reasons.

When concerns were raised, staff — especially at the front desk — were defensive and dismissive. Promised discounts were only honored after I escalated to management.

While I appreciate the one-month credit offered after escalation, the core issues of communication, transparency, and accountability remain unresolved. It’s clear that professionalism is lacking at both the instructional and administrative levels.

We genuinely wanted this to work, but we’re now seriously reconsidering whether this school is the right fit for our family

My son David, who is almost 3.5 years old, had his first trial swimming lesson yesterday, and we were both very happy with the experience. Coach Mikaella was fantastic — kind, professional, and wonderful with young children. The whole facility is clean, well-organized, and thoughtfully designed. The atmosphere felt safe, warm, and welcoming — which is especially important for little ones and their parents. Everything from the service to the pool area is done just right.

One small note — a few of the hair dryers didn’t seem to be working, so it might be helpful to check them, especially since this is the only place available for drying hair after class.

Be very careful — this company operates in a dishonest way.

My son attended a trial class and enjoyed it, so I decided to sign him up. The manager offered a promotion: pay for 3 months and get 1 month free. I specifically confirmed that the plan included 2 sessions per month, and I paid around $600 based on that.

Three days later, without any notice or permission, they charged my card an additional $450. They claimed the manager made a mistake and forgot to include the second session in the original quote.

I immediately canceled the contract and requested a refund — I should not have to pay for their staff’s mistakes. Unfortunately, the company did not see anything wrong with this behavior. Totally unacceptable.

We would have visited you with great pleasure, if not for an unpleasant incident. We came to your classes. Paid for a subscription. My son started attending. He really liked it. Our request was 2 classes a week, you had a promotion pay for 3 months and get one for free. We immediately told the manager that we wanted exactly 2 classes a week. We asked about the promotion. She confirmed everything and gave us 2 classes a week. We paid. After some time, it turned out that the promotion applies to 1 class per week. We began to figure out how this happened. In the end, another manager said that it was your mistake and he would leave everything as is. But when the manager girl came again, she was rude, said that this was all wrong and we cannot attend 2 times a week without additional payment. She also referred to the language barrier, because we are not native speakers, which was also rude and unpleasant. In the end, we asked for our money back, minus the classes that our son attended. This situation did not cause positive emotions

It wasn’t bad , but I had two kids there at the same time an 8 yr old and 5 yr old They put them at separate ends of each other, so I couldn’t see both of them. I was running back-and-forth like a weirdo. Didn’t tell me what they were going to do before class or what skills they were gonna work on or after didn’t show my kids that have never been there how to turn the showers on Or why they were doing what they learned there was pretty much no structure or communication. My 5yr old child was in a lane with one swim teacher, and then in the middle of it got moved to lane with another kid that was even farther from her sister and that teacher got out of the water??? And after they didn’t ask me if I wanted to sign my kids up or anything I had to walk up to the desk and ask for prices and what they both did because my 8ur old can swim so I wanted to know why they did what they were teaching her and they couldn’t give me a answer it was just strange. Like them assumed Me and my kids knew where to go and why they were doing things. I just would’ve thought they said would’ve said parents in the blue zone ,This is what we did. This is why we did it and this is what we were building on so they’ve become better Swimmers or Lottie da da or something & in the big blue we did this .. I was just disappointed a little , I think they had fun and learned something but I don’t know because my oldest who knows how to swim didn’t get to really swim , she was swimming with a noodle in front of her in her hands ?

At first this was a great establishment with regular classes. However, we have experienced multiple times where the class schedule has changed without it notifying us, causing us to rush out of work to pick our child up from school early, rush to get to swim practice and get changed, only to find out that he is not on the schedule any longer for that day and time and thus get turned away. Staff is very young, seemingly irresponsible.

Even though I am giving three stars, I still highly recommend Big Blue Swim School because the instructors are AWESOME, the price is fair and the venue is setup so parents can easily watch their kids learn to swim. However, the management of accounts between the local school and corporate office (?) needs vast improvement--they appear not to communicate very well with each other. We had several discrepancies over the past 5 months with three rescheduled classes and our account. Highly recommend that parents keep a record of rescheduled classes with specific dates, the staff member's name who provides the information and be sure to provide a 30 day notice of cancellation. Actions taken at the local school seemed to never reach corporate office or whatever department does the billing and rescheduling of lessons, this happened several times.

My grandson learned a lot in 5 months. We hope to enroll him again in Big Blue in the future!

A very bad swim school. No accountability. After about 6 months without any progress in my kids, I canceled their classes. The answer I got when I asked why my kids aren't progressing was, "we teach slowly so they learn slowly, you can cancel if you like". But I had to pay 1 months class anyway. Their policy is easy make up classes but all my son's make up classes that should have been available for 45 days have disappeared in their app. They stopped answering follow up texts. I lost significant amount of money and more importantly time by enrolling my kids there at Big Blue swim school in Apex, NC.

We appreciate Ashley maybe new to this since you have only just introduced baby swim classes however it was not a great first experience for us. We couldn’t hear Ashley or the instructions very well at all as she continuously kept turning away to read from the script sheets. It would have really helped if she had read the sheet then turned to speak more loudly, more slowly and more clearly to the class. Even better would have been to study the class instructions prior to avoid loosing out on actual lesson time.
The pool area was far too loud for the way the lesson was delivered unfortunately.

We have also been used to more actual swimming with more room to swim at our previous lessons in the UK and would like the space opening up if we were to come back to big blue. With the amount of parents and children in such a small space, it restricted movements.

We would also prefer more options for a private shower also as the one in the boys changing room was occupied so nowhere for us to properly shower and clean the swim water off with soap and hot water. Understand there was an issue with no hot water today as well which didn’t at all help our experience.

Overall, Big Blue has a lot of potential and the outside seating area works very well but needs to be an improvement on the lesson.

We love the Apex Big Blue Swim School! Our 4 year old son started the swimming lessons in October 2024 and it was a huge difference to other place that he used to go. The coaches (Camille, Keir, Natrice, Paige, Taidam and other), the staff (Sarah, Tatum and other) are extremely kind, friendly, supportive and transparent! The coaches provide the update on the swimming progress all the time, they are ready to answer any questions we might have, they are always smile and talk to us in a very respectful and positive way (it is priceless)! Also, the facility is very clean, modern with a lot of natural light! Highly recommend this amazing place for your loved ones!

I’m unsure of the initial team member we interacted withs name, however she was lovely, inviting and gave us a great tour of the facility. Our instructors name was Sam or Samara and she was phenomenal. My child is 22 months old and can be shy. Sam really was an excellent communicator and superior instructor. My child warmed up right away thanks to Sam being so welcoming. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience!

Our son is thriving in the pool and we see his confidence grow every session. His coaches are Chamille and Chiamaka and I highly recommend them. They are patient and work really well with the toddler and preK kids. Our son loves swimming at Big Blue!

We just moved from California. First year we couldn’t find any swim lessons available. I’m glad they are open Big blue. My older one can pick up her swimming skills pretty fast. After a year with no lessons. Their staffs are fantastic.

My daughter has been taking lessons for a couple of months and making progress, but today she felt overwhelmed and refused to do her lesson after we arrived as she wanted me to be with her. The staff at the desk (I forgot to ask her name) was extremely helpful and encouraged my daughter to do her lesson by going in with her and talking with her about things she loves. The instructor JoJo was also so good with my daughter and I could tell she felt safe and confident with her. I highly recommend Big Blue for their excellent staff snd expertise.

Today was our daughter’s first lesson, and while our daughter was initially nervous about getting into the water, her instructor, Natrice, did an excellent job with her! We were really impressed with the system, and the front desk staff was extremely helpful, answering all our questions.

The swimming instructors seem to only supervise the children without actually teaching any swimming techniques. After six months, the kids are still just playing in the water without learning any proper swimming skills. When I approached the manager, they explained that the teachers don't teach new techniques but instead have the children repeat the same swims until they learn it on their own. The fees are quite high, the pool time is limited, and there are no shower facilities. Additionally, children are kept at the same level for six months, and without any monitoring or questioning, the management will continue to keep them at the same level.

My daughters have been going to Big Blue for about 6 months. My older one (8) was afraid of going in water, but after Big Blue training she enjoys swimming, going under water for fun and excited for swim lessons every time. Huge waste of money . My daughter has been in lessons there for two months and is still doing the same thing. Run by very unprofessional 20 something’s . I tried to cancel with only two weeks notice after I started noticing there was no advancing, And I was very dismissed by the girl at the desk. I also tried to contact via email and talk to someone on the phone.
Huge disappointment I’m an only parent and I spent 140 $250 a month and my daughter has learned nothing
The teacher seem like they’re overwhelmed with too many people doing the trial classes and they take up a lot of the time one day my daughter only swam for literally 10 min of a 30 min class .

I was really disappointed with the upkeep of the facility in Apex, NC. The soap dispenser was out of soap, which is a basic necessity for maintaining hygiene, especially in this setting.
