About the Club

The Chapel Hill Shotokan Dojo has been teaching traditional Japanese karate-do in Chapel Hill/Durham since 1978. Our classes are geared toward adults, but we welcome mature school-age children 12 and up. We are inclusive of all levels of physical ability; our focus is not on competing with others but on improving ourselves by pushing to (and eventually beyond) our perceived limits. We are fortunate to have two very senior and experienced fifth-degree black belts leading the dojo, which is part of Shotokan Karate of America, founded in 1956 by Tsutomu Ohshima. Newcomers are welcome to observe or participate in any class, whether they are completely new to martial arts or have previous experience.

As Chinese, we know martial arts are not only for self defence, but also good for building your core muscle,.flex your hips. let your lower body be more stable, etc. our seniors contribute all their knowledge and experience to juniors in karate dojo chapel hill. our seniors not only teach you their experience from practicing shotokan karate ,but also share their wisdom from their life. The Chapel Hill SKA group is not only extremely skilled but very generous with their expertise. I just attended a special training practice with Rob Clark and other Chapel Hill members and was impressed again by their dedication, insight, and focus... all while being kind and approachable. Thanks for being such terrific leaders in SKA!

Chapel Hill Shotokan
Rob Clark and his team of black belts at Chapel Hill Shotokan are exceptional. They are people who care about you and your martial arts journey. It doesn’t matter if you are brand new to karate or have years of experience, you will find what you need with these folks. I have known Rob for over twenty years, and his ability to meet you where you are and bring out the best in you is truly amazing. If you are looking for traditional Japanese karate training in the Chapel Hill area this will be the place for you.

I’ve been training here for about 6 years now, and it really changed my life. I feel more focused, compassionate, and healthy than I did before I started my training. I also opened up more as I became a part of the community among our members. I would recommend it to anybody looking for a way to change for the better.

As a Shotokan karate practitioner that had more than a few years off, senior instructors here have helped me get back into and develop my karate practice over the last 12 years. Chapel Hill Shotokan Karate also hosts regional and national practices so it’s great to be able to meet and train with other SKA members.

This is an excellent community of respectful and understanding people dedicated to karate. The practices have a very good balance of techniques and philosophical concepts of the art, which makes them accessible to young karatekas.

I grew up practicing Shotokan Karate in my home country but didn't practice for many years. Now, I'm practicing again at Chapel Hill Shotokan Karate. This place is welcoming and has a real sense of community. The seniors have a lot to teach us, and do so with patience and respect. This is one of the places that make life in the triangle special.

I learned Karate for 13 years in Japan and this Dojo teaches true authentic Shotokan Karate. The practice covers Kihon, Kumite and Kata for beginners to black belt. Amazing Sensei and amazing people! Highly recommended

I've practiced at the Chapel Hill Karate Dojo a few times, last one was for an amazing Kumite clinic and tournament. Everyone was great, senior members take care of junior members, and their teaching is invaluable
