I've lived in larger cities with gyms that stayed busy but still never seemed to have to wait much for equipment. This location on the other hand is an anomaly because the way the general population around here eats (greasy, fried food is plentiful) you would think less people would care about fitness and crowding the exercise floor. Nearly every day after 5 I have to stand around and wait for children or teens to finish their shenanigans so I can complete my workout. I'm beginning to think the best solution is for me to invest in my own weights and equipment because this place is obviously at capacity most of the time. Either that or start coming in overnight! Just a fair warning to those wanting to come after work - DON'T

Canβt say enough good things about the stay and play staff!! They are so great with kids. I was nervous about leaving my baby at first but they took such good care of him, I feel completely comfortable leaving him in their care while I work out. My toddler is often apprehensive about going but they always work with him and help him feel loved and cared for. It has been such a game changer for me to know my children have top notch care while I take a couple hours to work on myself.

I would highly discourage you from sending your child to the YMCA Summer Camp programs. Unforrtunalty, they are running these camps solely for monetary gain. These camps are not designed to enrich your childs life, or create exciting memories. It's an extremely poor reflection of our Currituck County YMCA. My daughter only attended two days of the camp once we realized they had no rooster or head count protocol. The second day upon calling we realized they didn't have any record that she was in their care. Terrifying. To top it off my daughter was in tears about being screamed at all day by her teenage camp counselor. Her group was left under a tree for an hour, unattended, while the counselors practiced cheerleading. It's unacceptable that we all spent countless hours trying to satisfy the paperwork requirements and our hard earned money for our children to have bad experiences but most of all, not be safe.

This is my home away from home. The staff are all amazing! So helpful, welcoming and friendly. I am taking pickleball classes - love them. Varied and excellent classes and fun events. This is the best YMCA in the area.

Called and asked if outdoor pool was open, asked multiple times to be sure they understood I was asking about the outdoor pool. I was assured it was open until 6 pm. I made the drive from Elizabeth City with both of my kids arriving around 12 pm. Upon arrival I was told it was closed with the reason being they couldn't pay the life guards for small amount of people that were showing up. Which strikes me as odd because most of the money circulating is membership based.

So disguised with this building and the people in it....reserved an 8 yr old birthday party for 20 guests...had 15 guests and looked over and realized they were denying people to the birthday party.....the pool reservation we had paid OVER $300 for..because their pool was at full capacity...went and spoke to the lady and she said she couldn't allow anymore people into the pool because there were too many "public swimmers" in the pool we paid for, for 2 hours that day...if you pay for a reservation or pay the extra $5 per guest goodluck to you...because we couldn't even have our full 20 guests before the "gate lady" was denying people...didn't have anything setup at 1:10 when we got there...knowing the party planner said she would be there at 1 to get it setup...will not have another birthday party at ymca...and honestly wouldn't recommend anyone too with the experience we had...the kids that were allowed in had fun yhankfully they didn't realize what was going on...but to the ymca very unorganized and was not worth $300 to rent the pool guests couldn't even come into...

Absolutely terrible with communication...don't try and plan any events at this ynca unless it's a year in advanced because trying to get a callback or an email back about a kids birthday party has been one tail of a nightmare...between dropping in emails and voicemail over the last two weeks with nothing in return!! Make sure you start trying with plenty of time in advanced!!

I like to give them 6 stars if I could. Not only a gym, they mean more for families with children. My son got through his separation anxiety in the stay & play. Every stuff is very friendly and loving. They work hard and the environment is always clean and tidy.

This is one of the few places to workout in this part of currituck. The gym is well equipped although there is a few key pieces of equipment missing such as a lateral pulldown and low pulley (for back). Also needs additional options for shoulder machine, bi-ceps, and chest press. Could be accomplished with Hammer strength taking minimal space....and there's a lot of space at this YMCA. The only irritating item is schedule of the gym (basketball court) During the summer they run a daycare..ok...call it camp but it ties the gym up and other members can not use until after 6 pm. Since the membership is not cheap I believe this is not serving all members. In the same building there is also another giant gym that apparently parks and recreation wont let anyone use....guess they are saving it for the return of Michael Jordan.

Disappointed yet again by the hours down here. Twice in the past week my family and I have shown up and Stay and Play was closed. Even my 7 year old said "didnt they tell us it closed at 7 last time?" Whats the point in paying $100/month if you can't use the advertised features? In addition, they cut back their overall hours in the past year.
I get running a business and making analytic decisions, I really do. But if you are the only location in the area with hours like that, does that really make sense?
I enjoy working out here but wish I could enjoy with my wife as well. Disappointed in experience and extra disappointed by complete lack of empathy from employees.

My kids wanted their birthday party at the ymca this year. I paid 200$ for an outdoor pool party, if I was a non member it would've been 250$. With me paying I was thinking it would be a private party, why else would I pay right? The pool was still open for public use. Ok I understand, I asked could we set up at 2 of the picnic tables that have the shade. I wasn't allowed. Those are for "members only". I've been a member for over a year now and all of my guests were members as well but bc I PAID for a birthday party I was not able to use them. Next thing that happened was in the pool itself. Kids were playing with a squishy ball thing throwing and catching it. A parent was in the first section with them and I was by the ropes in the 4 ft "deep end" watching. The ball went a foot past the rope my son and another friend came over to get it. Lifeguard blew his whistle and told my son he couldn't be in the "deep end" without adult supervision. I was right next to him in the pool and replied "excuse me I'm his mom and I'm right here. He is supervised" lifeguard then replies I can only supervise up to 3 kids at once. I said ok 2 went past the rope pointed at the other 2 parents that were in the water as well and said trust me they're supervised. Extremely unhappy and wasted 200$. If anybody wants to use the YMCA for an outdoor pool party DO NOT PAY!! Just show up, you can then use the picnic tables, you can save 200$, you're allowed to bring a little grill and cook hamburgers and hotdogs etc. If you have non members you invited just sign them in as your guest. The party "helper" said that most people normally do just show up. I just wish I would've known this before hand

The indoor pool is embarassing for such a new facility which has a swim team as well as the HS uses for their swimteam is impairing our athletes. It is not the length of a competition pool which causes problems for the athletes using it to practive for competition. The outdoor pool which is only used 4 mnths out of the year had more consideration than the one used all year and neither are for a swim team.

Far as gyms go this YMCA is very well handled. The y could work on their pricing but I knew that joining. Both the staff and members are good people and it shows in the cleanliness. An indoor track is great the outdoor pool is nice in the summer. Generally not a wait to get a bench or the machine you want. A lot of swimming programs take up the indoor pool or other parts from time to time, which I don't see as fair to full price members. The daycare part closes the big play house area from time to time, don't really get that or how to explain it to a 7 year old that she should just draw. But overall it is a great place that of course could improve.
Ps. saunas are supposed to be hot

I cannot say enough amazing things about the YMCA in Barco NC. I am 36 and have never gone to a gym because quite frankly I was too intimated by them. I never thought I could be someone who went to work out every day. I met with Rick there who was great and very friendly. He showed me how to use all the equipment and set up a workout routine for me. I have already taken a few classes and the instructors have been fantastic. I already feel like this is a home away from home. The daycare is wonderful as well. My daughter and I love Ms. Courtney and see her there all the time. Joining this Y is by far the best decision we've made since moving here from Upstate NY a few months ago.

This is a very nice, very clean, well equipped family oriented gym. The rates are reasonably priced and the staff is extremely courteous and do a great job at facilitating your stay while at their facility. The amenities are well kept and serviceable. That said.....This is not the place for America's most elite athletes.
The crowd that attends the Y range from the average "gym douche" to the meat market hawks looking for a date, grandma and grandpa just trying to stay alive while inching their way along the indoor track and even the busy-body soccer mom who loves to just waste time sitting on a cardio bike with the fan on full blast while pedaling at 60 beats per minute.
Seeing that it's in Currituck where there isn't a variety of other gym options, and you may not want to drive 30 miles to Elizabeth City or Chesapeake VA; the Y poses a viable option for anyone who just wants to maintain the status quo of keeping a descent fitness level. Understand that most of the clientele there isn't mentally equipped to deal with the intensity required to acheive athletic prowess. So it may be better to keep the truly intense training in the "Garage gym".
An example is that I was unaware that each day they change the authorized direction on the indoor track and received a traffic infraction by a short circuited staff member. He was extremely courteous and nice but the principle of not picking a direction and staying with it is about as an annoying as nails on a blackboard to me. Overall this is a descent fitness facility geared more towards the 24 hour fitness types who enjoy a "No intimidation zone" (puking in my own mouth). I rate it 5 stars with the average sheeple hearted weak gene"d American in mind. If I personally had a more hardcore closer option I wouldn't be training at this gym. And did I say that the staff is awesome? They are. And they go the extra mile.... treat them well.

Stay & Play childcare opens at 8:15am. Nice outdoor pool--indoor is small but it's almost never busy. Group swim lessons for school age are A++. Indoor walking track is nice to have. I wish they had more Octane Fitness bikes that work out your arms--but I've said that about all locations. Nearby park is excellent--could have more shade, but great as a post-workout play area for the kids. Biggest issue is last summer I took my 2nd grader a few times when I worked out and the kids play area--meh. He said he didn't meet any new friends and sat and played video games (think it was X box). He's severe ADHD so I was hoping they'd have him run laps or play ball or something. Instead, I went home exhausted from my workout while he was still full of energy bouncing off the walls. I didn't have any issues with the infant/toddler area. One yr old came home and slept like a rock.

This YMCA is really nice. The equipment upstairs is nicely spread out and they have a track that goes around the upstairs. The pool is nice and quite and the outside one is very fun when it's warm. The child care is nice and big and I love that they have different sections for the ages. I was disappointed and mad today though since both my kids got sick from child care (which is bound to happen with kids) but I was mad because a "worker" (she wasn't wearing a blue work shirt or name tag) was really coughing when we first walked in and was sniffling, and when I came back she was asleep with my 4 month old in her arms on the rocker. I did not feel comfortable with that and took him right away, since she was really sick and she could of dropped him. I had him in the swing asleep when I left and was gone an hr. Other workers are really great with my kids so I recommend getting to know them and their schedules and go when they are working.

This place is cutting their hours back from closing at 9:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., claiming it's because nobody uses the gym at that time and "they can't afford to pay people to keep it open" (not to mention huge weekend hour cutbacks too). Yet every weeknight I'm there past 8:00 p.m., and there are never fewer than 15 people there in the same situation as me, whether they're using weights, walking, or in the basketball court - needing to work out at night because it's the only time of day they can work out. But will YMCA be cutting my monthly bill? No, of course not.
Here's hoping someone opens up an alternative in the Currituck/Moyock area, because the YMCA clearly doesn't care about its members.
Edited to update this review: I appreciate Dean reaching out to me to talk about the changes to the YMCA's hours. I don't have to like the cut back hours, but I certainly have a better appreciation for why the changes are being made to test to see if that helps the YMCA's financial situation. As a non-profit, I understand why they have to make hard decisions sometimes. Thanks sincerely to Dean for reaching out.
