Horrible would leave zero stars if possible. Vibes in the gym are terrible Aggressive, arrogant, boastful people. Terrible Terrible save your money and go somewhere else. A gym should be a place of peace and a place to get your mental right through exercise. Not the total opposite

The team is disorganized from management down with conflicting enforcement of policy.
The dumbbells racks haven’t been cleaned it’s a staph infection waiting to happen.
As someone who was a dvp for gyms in Detroit this is a sad excuse for a premium gym

Update:
YMCA is a penny pinching company .
They want a 30 day notice in advance to quit the ymca. If you put membership on pause they want $10 a month. If you quit and come back you have pay high registration fee.
The dowd is too packed. Least favorite gym. Too big. Parking is a headache with the new parking system. They no longer have cloth towels in the workout area. People hog the benches. (A lot mix match workout areas)
I would recommend they need build location in Loso area.

I go to the Dowd YMCA almost daily and there is a man named Richard that works at the check in counter that sees me there every time I check in. I was waiting in line to check us in and my wife needed to use the restroom so I directed her to go into the locker room and I would check handle checking her in. He made a point to embarrass her and make her go to the bathroom outside the entrance
(that we didn’t know was there) and I checked us in and entered the gym figuring my wife entered after me. Come to find out she was so embarrassed she didn’t even try to enter after that. On my way out I stopped and politely said, “ Hey bro. I felt you were a little bit over the top earlier the way you spoke to my wife and didn’t appreciate it. You see us here everyday and I didn’t like the way you spoke to us”
Instead of treating us like a customer should be treated he started in telling me about all the rules and wanted to argue the matter. He said I was disrespectful for calling him BRO!!!
He really upset my wife to the point that she was scared to try and enter the Y!!!
Is this how you train your people to treat customers? I get that there are rules but if there was a problem with our membership someone could have addressed it in a more humane way. I’m sorry but the way he acted was totally the opposite of customer service and I think we deserve and apology!

The gym itself is great. The new paid parking system is a joke. Metropolis has charged me $10 for parking on 3 separate occasions, even after I validated. It’s an unnecessary inconvenience and hassle when you just want to focus on getting in and hitting the gym - especially if you’re short on time.

Cool gym in the heart of Charlotte. This also comes with a grain of salt. Equipment is lacking big time with how many people go into it. Waiting on machines that they only have singles of is crazy. This gym is way too big and Charlotte is way too big for Dowd Y to lack on strength machines.
Cardio area is huge, strength area needs help.

Let me preface by saying I've been going to the Dowd for a year now, and it has great equipment and the crowd is what is it, but it's manageable if you time it right. Not really an issue for me.
The issue for me is the newly installed Metropolis parking setup. Despite scanning and confirming I clicked the 3-hour validation option, I check my phone this morning and I was charged anyways, and my visit to the Dowd was incorrectly tracked on the app as still ongoing. This app is extremely unnecessary and has only added headaches, rather than convenience.
This review is a reflection on the Metropolis parking setup, it needs to be gone. Overall, the Dowd is still a good spot to workout, just don't drive there and deal with the YMCA and Metropolis's idiotic parking gimmick.

Paid parking to metropolis. A company that will falsely charge you in cities like Las Vegas and in small shopping centers saying you were there for 48 hours.
They want to charge you to park here by the hour.
I used to go every day and I stopped yesterday.
They couldn't add a permit system connected to the YMCA branch. No they had to go with a third party to shake you down in a failing economy.
It rains here in NC you want us to point our lithium ion battery phones in the rain to check in for parking. Will not be visiting again for the major security risk that the metropolis the app has you put in your license plate and card number. Who knows where that information goes. A data breach happens every day I'm not putting my information on a third party app. Just recent had to change 167 account passwords from a recent data breach. Over 100 million Americans were affected recently.
Also metropolis has had a lawsuit against them for charging people who never set foot in a parking lot. So if you ask me. I wouldn't go here.
Think candy van coaxing you in. Except it's a nice gym. The facility is great
It's not $12 an hour great

I called just last week by phone to ask what time the location closes (it was during a week day) and was told , “eleven o’clock. No, eleven thirty”, by an employee.
Ended up that an employee walked up to the gym to say we had to go that the y was closing. Thats fine. But after he said it once and the six guys that were playing basketball dispersed and started leaving the court and within a next five to eight seconds after that he says, “c’mon guys” in a way as if nobody was moving. And this had to be at only a few minutes after eleven. All it takes it to say something once and people know. The seeming to be pushy part of this exchange is an issue.
After being in the locker room for about five minutes or so, what seemed to be a security person says aloud, “c’mon good brother need to get together a little faster.” I chose not to even respond and mind you it had to be maybe only seven or eight after eleven because I actually did check my phone when I finally did get my things together and it was only 11:10pm. First the fact again of pushing or rushing was an issue. Secondly, there’s no need to have just been standing there watching me to get my stuff together (especially in lieu of you all’s closing time being 11:30pm). Thirdly, due to the 11:30pm closing time I still rightfully so had fifteen min to shower and would have walked out of the building at 11:24/25. Not appreciating how this was handled.
Finally on weekdays I have watched people with my own eyes leave out of the building right at 11:30pm and sometimes even a little bit after that. It doesn’t seem at these times people were rushed out. And I’ve also left on some nights where people are still showering in the men’s lockers when it’s closing time. And the only three or four times I’ve seen this nobody was down there watching, rushing and telling people it was time to go.
Ultimately the rules are rules and times are times. Just please do make sure it’s the same all the way across the board w/o Favortism, no matter who. Male/female, nationality, like/dislike, etc…. That’s doing business.
Much appreciated.

I love the gym itself, the equipment is amazing. The customer service is not it. I’ve had 3 separate very rude incidences with the same very rude staff, but from having pens thrown at me to being very rudely asked if I needed help when I’m obviously standing there….. needing help. I asked another staff member his name and she said “Tony”. And He does not seem happy to be at work nor does he seem to genuinely enjoy helping people. I have been coming as a guest with my friend to see if I would get my own membership, but after those interactions I will not be purchasing a membership.

First time me and my spouse going, he forgot his card so we’re trying to get checked in and there having difficulty finding him in the system. They refer us to another man and not only was he no help but just plain out giving attitude asking to get his legal name when that is what he was given. He ended up giving up and saying “well we can’t find you in the system 🤷” very bad experience we constantly go to the Conover YMCA and they attend us well there we are very disappointed.

I gave the person at the front desk my new bank card to set up automatic monthly payments. Apparently they forgot to set that up correctly and was told my membership was canceled a month later. Instead of simply reinstating my membership they told me to apply online for a new one. Now my rate is $20 + more a month than I was previously paying. They were not willing to work with me at all and blamed their system

After 25 years at the Dowd YMCA, I can say that while the gym itself is nice, it's rendered almost unusable by chronic, 24/7 overcrowding. Expect to wait for every single piece of equipment. My frustration peaked when I moved from Charlotte and attempted to cancel. Despite five phone calls (be warned, they don't return calls) and repeatedly submitting their cancellation form, I was falsely assured my membership was terminated, only to find they kept billing me. I was forced to cancel my credit card to end the charges. I absolutely would not recommend the Dowd. The combination of relentless crowds and shockingly poor management makes it an experience to avoid.

Gym is nice and was redone somewhat recently. Last few months, they rearranged and extended their hours which has made HUGE improvements. It still gets very busy, so plan accordingly but I love that they have 4 different areas for lifting weights and two tracks. While I’ve interacted with a few terribly rude staff members, the vast majority are very friendly and they always have people out on the floor if you need something.
Best YMCA I’ve been to in the area and also when compared to similar locations in WI, AZ, CO, PA, and other ones in Asheville and Triangle area. Just wish they would answer their phone when you call…that should be the easy part.

⭐🥇🏆This staff genuinely goes outside of their typical duties and have shown that they care about their members. Getting through the day with some unusual injuries is difficult however the team at DOWD makes me feel a step closer to recovery.
Javier has an unforgettable approach. He was very gentle and reassuring that I was in good hands.
Ericka is extraordinary! She always goes out of her way to make me feel extra relief. Her interpersonal skills are highly exceptional. She's very observant and she's always the reason that I'm ok when visiting. It's very hard when she's not here, whenever she's here I have a smooth visit.😇
Angela never hesitates to help me anything especially with safety. Thank you for being gentle, sweet and patient!
Jonathan and Nate are extremely attentive. They just do things I need automatically and it just WOWS me!
I am grateful for everything that you all have done, especially because you don't have to but have been willing to. 😇

If you’re going to have security and a cleaning staff present 24/7 in the lockerroom, give them something to do like fill the towel machine. If you can pay them to walk around with a dustpan all day your patrons could atleast have the courtesy of not carrying around a wet towel from home all day.

This is a pretty good location. I have full access to visit any YMCA location, but aside from this being a very nice well-lit gym, it’s my LEAST favorite YMCA location in Charlotte.
I have been attempting to book Pilates classes on Saturday's for the past 3 months. The moment the booking opens, it’s immediately booked. I’m talking within the same minute. I have been online waiting to book, constantly refreshing my screen and the class reflects “full” upon the minute of opening at 9am on the dot.
I pay a monthly membership fee to be able to visit any gym of my choice and attend classes. I feel like I’m being scammed here. It seems like something is being done on the backend when class reservations are made and it’s not fair.

Outdated equipment. Rusty dumb bells all over the place. You have the audacity to charge people over $60-80 a month and have equipment as old as the 1990s?
No staff floor presence. Carpets in the lockers? Musty smelling and rusty floors. Sad excuse of a YMCA.
Layout is all over the place and not to mention sanitation here is an absolute disaster. The amount of nasty lockers could make you sick. You seem to fail on the sanitation aspect of this gym
The hours are very limited for people with actual careers and/work in off hours. So much for coming in if you work until 8/9pm
Yikes… we signed up for a month and going back to our old gym. We don’t have kids so this is not the gym for us. The rooftop is nice and some of the amenities were a plus but the cons outweigh the pros by 100x
They also have a crappy cancelation policy where you have to pay for the last month as well.

I wanted to enjoy some swim time with my children, while we were rudely asked to leave by Jon. He was very rude and racist 😒 he told me we needed to reserve a lane to swim and then wouldn't assist with trying to help do so. My children and myself were the only African American in the pool, and the look on my children's face when asked to leave NO mother should have to see. Yes I'm an active member at another location but chose to go to this location because they stay open to 6pm. I WILL NEVER go back to this facility while Jon is there working as a lifeguard. He needs to review his values and know we are in 2024 there Africa America people everywhere and we can swim there also but also think about why he works for the YMCA.

More power racks needed. For a gym the size of the Dowd, more power racks are needed. There are only 3, but there are 7 (or more) squat stands. Swap out some of those squat stands for power racks! Only having 3 power racks leads to significant wait times when the gym is busy. Having to wait 20 minutes or longer to use one is not uncommon.

There website says for all in the community and for all ages. Apparently this does not apply to children 7 and 9 at the Dowd Monday through Friday.
I am longstanding member. I took my kids afternoon to run on the roof top track. I was told that the Dowd is for adults only and was not allowed in. This is asinine. I am a health care provider and well published. I try to promote healthy lifestyles for all ages. Apparently the YMCA does not agree and just wants my dues. They are hypocrites.

New to charlotte, joined the Dowd soon after settling here and I’m glad I did. This gym has it all, literally. Swimming pool, 2 basketball courts, racquetball, a rooftop track/lifting area. There are multiple different free weight areas so you don’t feel like you’re doing the same monotonous workouts. My only gripe with this place is how crowded it gets during the evening rush after work. Hard to get a lift in at those times. If your focus is cardio during those times, you won’t have issues. If you work from home, go before work or on lunch and you’ll have absolutely no issues at all.

This YMCA is BEYOND worth it. I spent my entire summer here and let me tell you, get the membership (also, ask them about getting the membership based on your housing income, it makes it cheaper per month. I paid a very reasonable price for this gym). It was a little far away from where I lived but I always found parking, had plenty of exercise classes to choose from, and the rooftop view is crazy. I got to take a rooftop yoga class there and wow, breathtaking.

I walked in today with both my kids trying to get them into y care
The staff didn’t get to me right away and when they did they said I needed a reservation which I didn’t know.
So I made the reservation
And told them I had completed one and they still didn’t want to take my kids
At that point I felt discriminated from everyone else as I seen how kind they let the other kids go with no problem
As a parent I wouldn’t recommend this facility

I like the gym. The staff is nice & all. Members are chill. The only problems I have is lack of machines, space overcrowding, and sadly the ROACHES. I have seen roaches twice in less than a month. Me another member trapped & killed a roach in the main gym area during its most crowded time. I thought nothing of it like maybe it flew in or something that day. Today I was using the sauna and saw a roach crawl underneath the heater and I immediately left.I wish I could have taken a picture but it crawled underneath the heater very quickly. Keep in mind the sauna is in the locker room and this was during the day at 3:45 pm. So the facility could be dealing with an infestation and I’m just not into that especially in a gym. That’s unacceptable. Very likely will just switch to another gym.

This is a gorgeous GYM. I have enjoyed it several times. Today my kid was out of school, and I thought to go there to get some racketball time and for me to work, and maybe for him to jog in the track or something. While I was on my way back to the bathroom... there was a lady who works there asking my son questions. I quickly and sternly showed that I was his mother. She said that this is an adult floor (3rd floor) and that we cannot even be in the phone call area... he can only go to the basketball court and the racketball area. I am so disappointed as the YMCA is supposed to be for family. She was nice... but if this is the gym's attitude.. I do not care how nice the facility is... this is going to help me rethink my membership. (I might go to the Cabarrus area since we live there.). I have been here before with the kids... so do not understand what in the hell is going on. She came in like a police... and I do not appreciate that she approached my son first (who is 10 years old.) I am not thrilled... and due to the work that I have to do... I will stay here for a couple of hours.... but not sure if I will continue to refer people to this YMCA any longer. NOPE!

Awesome facility. Most of the people I encountered are just not it, although that's probably just more of a Charlotte thing, so giving 4 stars.

Men's locker room smells like wet dog, equipment is ancient, can't just go to the pool gotta reserve it weeks in advance, at the price of this membership that's absolutely pathetic. Would avoid this place like the plauge

Cockroach in the sauna. Told the front desk ladies, they giggled and said it was a palmetto bug (which is a cockroach). Not that big of a deal but if I pay $80 a month I’d prefer there not to be bugs. Would appreciate a little courtesy and at least pretend they care.

This gym is the crown jewel of not just ymca's nationwide, but of all gyms Nationwide. Having trained clients at gyms all over the US... this gym has become my home base.
The mens and women's locker rooms each have 2 steam rooms and 2 dry saunas.
There are 4 massive floors of top notch equipment

I am leaving 1 star because i have noticed for the past 3 years that membership prices have gone up drastrically and thats not ok, this used to be a place for families and for low income people and high income people alike. But now it has become a place that only those making plebty of money can go to....it now costs 123 dollars a month for a family if 2 adults and 1 child....why foes it cost that much what is so good about the ymca that it deserves to cost that much thats just insane and then you to have to oay 10 to 20 dollars a visit for your guests...i mean it has become a money put thwy no longer care about families, they are never clean and the childcare is never open for people who work regukar jobs and get off at regular hours...the YMCA is no longer what it used to be.

Their customer service is poor. They used to be the greatest facility in Charlotte. Their staff knows their schedule have changed for less hours to members but they don’t care and will tell you in a rude way. Today Saturday I took 6 minutes after they closed (close time 6pm). I have been a member for many years (they used to close at 7pm before Covid). This lady by the name of Angela in a very rude way came in to the ladies room and told me that I needed to leave at 6:06pm I was almost done and I told her the issue I had that took me a few minutes longer, she didn’t care and in a very loud voice she told me “no reason why to stay after 6pm”I asked her name, and her ID# or last name, and told me “Angela” but she is not a police officer to have a number. At that point I decided to walk out of the facility, she kept talking as I was walking out in a loud voice and kept raising her voice at the end she told me to have a nice day in a sarcastic, rude, and unprofessional way. YMCA should hire people that have some high education and professional skills. As a member for many years I am very disappointed with their staff service. She was rude, talking over me. The staff was seating at the entrance. They are witness of all this rude and unprofessional behavior. I will follow up with corporate and update this post.

This place is awful. I canceled my membership through the front desk worker but I was charge for 2 months after that and was only refunded for one of those months. Employees are rude, the equipment is old and cheap, there is no parking, the hours are ridiculous, and the gym culture there has a lot of rude people or people filming you without your consent.

It’s….a gym. No towels, always very crowded, and the hours are ridiculously narrow, especially on the weekends. If they lengthened hours, it’d help reduce the crowds and clearly allow for more revenue since demand is there, but alas, if you’re looking for a gym along the light rail line that’s easy to bike/run too, this is about all you’ve got

Staff is extremely helpful and to take note that it is a huge YMCA of Charlotte, they get the job done and do the best. The staff need more credit then they get. I am grateful for they're hard work!

The facility is nice, however, the desk workers could be trained to be a bit nicer. On 2 occasions did the workers give me a rude or uncomfortable experience. The male employees who have been working the check in desk this week during morning shift have given me the feeling that they did not want to be there. They barely want to help and give very little effort to answering questions. Real vibe killer.
please hire employees who will be kind and helpful to people who are paying a membership to feel welcomed and have a good overall gym experience.

Good gym, but management REFUSES to enforce parking. People will use the parking lots to attend sporting events or other things in the city, making it difficult for gym goers to find much needed parking. Many of us tried to reach out to management, but they simply do not care about the needs of their customers.
This place will use any and every excuse to close early. Slightest chance of bad weather - closed! Don’t even wait and see if weather actually materialized...they just preemptively close. Complete joke. Equipment is always broken too. If they weren’t funded largely thru the city and donations, it would be bankrupt due to inept management.
Not long ago, they offered towel service, now they do not offer this.
TLDR, they want more money, for less services.

Been to this place twice with my family and both times we where dissapointed. After today we will not be going back.
It is impossible to get a parking spot. It is always too crowded. In womens locker rooms steam room and hot tub is not working. Multiple toilets are also not working.
I tried using some of the equipment in the locker room and almost every third machine is not working too. There are barely any machines in the locker room to begin with.
At least I can give them heads uo for keeping the place clean.
My husband shared that in the mens locker room they dont even have changing rooms the same way as women do. Talk about the equality.

The Dowd was renovated a couple of years ago and has some amazing equipment and in some cases, a lot of equipment to use. There are multiple floors with different equipment and many classes to choose. They even have a swimming pool, basketballl and racquetball. I wish they updated their accessories, like mats, ab roller as they either get lost or break. However what makes the Dowd is it's awesome members

Theft is a high problem here. After being told that I can see the camera footage to catch a thief at this location if a police report was filed, they then backed out of this agreement. Also police history indicates an extremely high theft pattern at this location. Do not get a membership here.

The only gym in the city where you actually cannot get a workout. This place did so crowded it’s almost laughable. Can’t park, can’t get a machine, can’t get into a class. Save yourself the struggle and literally go anywhere else if you want to actually get exercise.

I've been loving this gym. It's got tons of equipment and several different areas to go to to workout in. Pretty much serves all styles of training. The only downside is the overcrowding. If you go any time outside of the dead zone it's totally slammed.
Furthermore I love the included yoga classes with membership. It's really nice to combine strength training with yoga. A yoga membership to regular classes at a studio can be wildly expensive especially paired with a gym membership. The price is nice for all the amenities.
I am in love with the dry sauna. So thankful for that.

Great facility, friendly staff! Giving a 3 star only bc of the negligence shown from the 3rd party cleaning company / YMCA staff for disposing waste. Everytime the cleaning crew makes their rounds they replace every trash bag (empty or full) with a brand new trash bag. Not sure if these are expectations of the cleaning crew or what but it seems extremely wasteful. I have pointed this out to YMCA upper mgmt to no avail. Proposed solution would be to only replace the trash bag if it’s full as this could cut costs for the Y and it’s members as well as be more eco-conscious
