First time visiting here with my 8 & 10 year old kids. Michael, the assistant manager was SUPER helpful answering a bunch of questions and getting us started climbing. He took the time to explain shoe fitment, the different routes the different membership options and so much more. My kids LOVED it and so did I. Will definitely be back and absolutely would recommend.

Was here today 2/3/24. Took a climbing 101 class. Teacher was very helpful and patient. Learned a ton. Clean facility. Lots of space to workout and climb. Friendly staff. Pricing was alright. Will come back and take more classes in the future. Great experience overall.

I love Firsthand. After two years of consistent climbing there two times a week, I can no longer imagine life without it. It has changed my whole outlook on exercise and has gotten me into the best shape of my life, at least since high school. I have been struggling for years to find an exercise that I really love. The climbing gym is what I have been looking for. I really enjoy figuring out the problem of the route I am working on while I get a great workout at the same time.

Great gym! Tons of fun! Friendly staff, members, and guests. Very close to downtown Winston Salem, in the Innovation Quarter. Note that there is no roped climbing, and there are no tall climbing walls. Itβs just bouldering. Youβll still get as much climbing as you want, and youβll still want to go back every week!

Absolutely adore this gym. My first visit was back in January and I've been returning weekly since. The staff are all incredibly friendly and will take the time to help you if you need it. Weekly events such as group yoga keep visits diverse and you'll meet countless wonderful people. I've made a group of friends that I now hangout with weekly in and out of the gym, thanks to Firsthand.
Animals are allowed in the gym although you'll never see more than 1 or 2 at a time. This could pose issues for someone who is allergic but the air is well circulated (as it needs to be for all the chalk) so I can't imagine it would cause issues.

My wife and I visited on a rainy Saturday afternoon for the first time. Being new to this sport, we were a little apprehensive at first, but the staff were extremely friendly, encouraging and even offered advice on how to tackle some of the courses. I also love that first time visitors get complentary shoe rental as well. We had an absolute blast and it is an extremely fun way to get a good workout. I highly recommend you visit!

Good place to climb locally. The only downside is that it's smaller than a lot of climbing gyms I've been to. The routes can be almost too challenging for beginners like me so it's definitely for more intermediate to advanced climbers. I might enjoy it more after I get better at climbing but overall, not a bad place

I didn't use their facilities, they didn't have any safety straps. Even though it only looked to be the height of a second floor ceiling that was still high enough to sprain or even break an ankle/leg/ect. Not recommended for children and inexperienced beginners.

Really fun and challenging routes! Student day pass was perfect for breaking up a road trip. Staff was attentive and extremely friendly. Small fitness center with a single bench+rack+bar tucked off to the side to help you finish your training session. Perfectly empty for me, but I bet it might get backed up during peak hours. Bummed I wasnβt there on the beer night.

My impression after one month with a membership is that they reset frequently, offer zero-commitment prepaid monthly membership (Iβve never seen this before) and itβs both family-friendly but also good for training. Not overpriced like gyms often are especially considering you get a free beer at the brewery on Tuesdays.

Before I talk about how awesome this climbing gym is, first let me give a little information on my experience. I have been consistently climbing for about 4.5 years. During that time I have visited maybe 15 different climbing gyms across NC and SC. I tend to gravitate more towards roped climbing, so a good bouldering gym is hard to find. With that being said, originally Rockbox, now Firsthand climbing, has been one of my favorite climbing gyms EVER!
I started coming here around 2018 when it was relatively new, and have been visiting frequently. The setting here is amazing and is updated very often. Some of my most memorable and fun boulders I've climbed have been set here. The staff is also very friendly and prompt in fixing anything brought to their attention. The pricing is very reasonable for both the day pass and memberships.
Some things that could be improved:
More cubby space to put belongings, a larger parking lot (I've seen people parked illegally in the road in front of the building), and perhaps a more diverse set type; currently a lot of the steeper problems utilize slopers and pinches, and steep crimpy problems in the V4-V7 range are limited.
Overall, I highly recommend Firsthand Climbing to both inexperienced and experienced climbers alike. I will continue to support this amazing facility!

Been going a few times as a total newbie. Prices are fair and staff has been helpful and nice. Gym is clean and allows dogs if you've got a well behaved, leashed pup. Not a ton of V1-V2 routes, but enough to keep things interesting so far. V4-V6 seem to be where the majority of the routes fall with a smaller number being easier or harder (which is probably appropriate for people that climb more frequently than myself).

Impressed!!! Dogs allowed! Only well trained and on a leash of course, but WOW!!! I wish all bouldering gyms were like Rock Box. If I lived closer I would go here more frequently. Good variety of routes. Lots of solid V5-V6 problems. Owner and staff are very friendly and involved. Will definitely be back when I'm traveling through the area! Thanks for the great experience and allowing my pup inside. Game changer.

I love rock box because they have a good variation of problems. They have a cave and flat wall. They change the problems every couple of weeks which is cool because you have time to work them and also it gives you a sense of urgency to send it before they change it. Changing the problems keeps things fresh and interesting. The last thing that draws me to this place is the fact they also have a free weight gym set up that I can use to do work outs and also campus boards to train on. The staff have always been freindly to me and they have drinks and Cliff bars available for sale of I get dehydrated or need some fuel.

Rock Box is a family friendly environment packed with loads of fun! The routes on the wall change twice a week, meaning that there are always new climbs that get put on the wall during the week! With other gyms that reset their wall less often, I've found myself to get easily bored. On top of that, management and staff are friendly and always up to help. If you're in the area then I would highly recommend giving Rock Box a visit!

As far as gyms in and around Winston Salem goes, this is the best. Good setting, nice people, good training equipment. I've heard other gyms around larger cities have some better walls but they're too far to be reasonable to go to every day. They switch out sets often which is great. Only thing I want is some more proper gym equipment
