I’ve been training with Charlie for only two months, and I’m already thrilled with the results. His professionalism, dedication, and ability to tailor each session to my needs have made a huge difference. Charlie is attentive, motivating, and truly knowledgeable about what he does. I’m really enjoying working with him and highly recommend his training to anyone looking for real progress and a great experience.

Jason Bishoff - I see you posted a review. Since you are the general manager of Golds, please note that I agree exactly with Christina Licata's 1-star review from a month ago, and not your self-serving 5-star review! My daughter sent you a cancellation request for her membership, which you all received and have proof of. You said you had to charge her $30 fee for her to cancel it, but she didn't get any notification of that at all, so then you charged us for another six months. She has been trying to get in touch with you for over two weeks now. UNETHICAL. DISPUTED WITH THE CREDIT CARD COMPANY, WHICH THEY HONORED BC A WRITTEN REQUEST WAS SENT IN. But the REAL ISSUE HERE IS YOUR TOTAL AND COMPLETE FAILURE TO RETURN HER OR MY PHONE CALL FOR WEEKS, EVEN AFTER SHE STOPPED IN. I hope that if you have young adult children one day and someone jerks them around, you remember you did it too! End result - credit issued anyway, but now you lost a customer for life.

Gold’s Gym Lake Norman is by far the best gym I’ve ever been a part of!
From the moment you walk in, the energy and positivity are contagious. The staff are always welcoming, the facility is spotless, and the equipment is top-of-the-line. You can tell the team here really cares about the members and takes pride in keeping everything running smoothly.

I love how motivating the environment is — whether you’re new to fitness or have been training for years, everyone feels supported and included. The members are friendly, the community is strong, and there’s always someone pushing you to be your best.

If you’re looking for a gym that truly feels like family and keeps you excited to show up every day, Gold’s Gym Lake Norman is the place!

This morning, the scan was not working, which seems to be a common issue here. [ Why is it not getting repaired? ] About 25 customers, including myself, sat in the parking lot at 545a without gaining entry. It was a waste of time with most of our schedules.

Im glad that I only signed up here monthly for a temporary membership. The gym is not very clean, not sure it's actually cleaned at all. Management will actually harass you to text others or do their marketing for them. Very few stationary bikes, with only 1 that works.

Edit 9/25:

Things have gone downhill a lot here. Why am I charged twice a year for updates if hardly any updates are ever made? And now that fee has risen nearly 39%? Without any option to object. I see some improvements, like the new flooring & some new machines, but I also see bathroom sinks that are always soaking wet & truly should be remodeled. The whole bathroom, just look at the quality. I also see no improvements to the women's locker room in all the 6/7 years I've been here, yet the men's have a TV? We spend more time in our locker room as some of us stretch in there to do so in a more private location. A TV (and fixed ceiling) would go a long way.

I see the gym trying to improve, so I hope to up my review soon. Smoothie bars are cool and all but how about making the gym more women friendly? I'd be happy to consult should someone reach out.

Edit 2/24:
Staff used to clean great here regularly but I think they must had let the cleaning crew go in COVID or restricted their hours after because it's seriously nasty if you look close at any machine, though the facility is clean otherwise!

I came in today as the staffed hours ended & the bathroom is out of TP! Like, is there no pride in establishments anymore? (Managers I'm looking at you, not your employees who aren't trained differently.)

If there were any other big gyms in LKN, I'd be gone 🙄 Stuck here, guess I'll have to deal with dust (which I'm allergic to) & all the nonsense. (Seriously, this is on the people who attend more, but if there is a need for multiple signs reminding you to WEAR CLOTHES then YIKES!!!)

I miss the Gold's Gym it was when I signed up in 2019.

Old Review:
I haven't had a gym I can thrive in for years now. Thank you Gold's and a big thank you to the staff!!! For the Lake Norman area, it's easily one of the biggest gyms around.

You need to be very careful when signing up for a membership with this gym. If you have a young adult joining, please talk with them about the contracts they use and how much they will continue to deduct from your account even after it is canceled. I'm sure this gym is fine, but their business practices are not.

I really enjoy the gym membership when I’m actually able to access the gym. However, there are ongoing issues with the automated door not opening in the mornings, even when my pass scans correctly. This has made it difficult to rely on the gym during early hours. If the access system isn’t fixed, it’s misleading to advertise the gym as 24 hours especially for $25 every two weeks… I hope the owner can prioritize resolving this issue.

I have been going to this gym for 8 years, and I have steadily watched it go downhill, while the price continues to rise. Hardly any equipment or facility upgrades while I have been there, but my monthly rate has quadrupled. Locker room facilities are gross at best. If you like working out alongside annoying high schoolers in pajama pants, then this is the place for you.

Had good experience while at the gym. However, after paying cancelation fee. I have been getting charged every month. I have brought it up with management at least 5 times and they are not doing anything about it. Poor management and terrible customer service. Management even had an attitude with me for his bad service and still hasnt resolved the issue.

I have been going to this gym for years. I loved that they had free child care. Then we started having to pay. Now they have cut the childcare hours! I used to be able to go to a lot of the classes but I guess not anymore. I’ll be looking for a new gym! What a disgrace. Must have ran out of money with the new renovations!

I really enjoy this gym. The spinning classes are amazing, shout out to Greg, Nancy, and Brenda! The sauna is a great addition. The gym is very clean - the only time you see dirty machines is when someone doesn't wipe them down after use. I think the informational classes/seminars they offer can be really beneficial, but they need a bit more structure - especially when it comes to over-input from some of the audience. I love that they provide those, though. Great location and amenities offered for the price. I've been going there for 2 years, and I don't plan on leaving unless I move away. I did have to pause my membership for a few months while I was out of state - you have to do it through the app one month prior. The app didn't accept my request, but I just went to the Huntersville gym when the Lake Norman gym couldn't help me, and they got it squared away easily!

Hands down the worst gym I've ever been to when you consider the exorbitant price. Small, bad layout, lacking machines and variety, anti bodybuilding policies. Disgusting filthy locker room, bathroom and showers. I'd rather shower in a prison.

Topping it off, canceling and modifying your membership in anyway is handled by a third party who are foreigners. The membership like a legal contract. Compare this to Powerhouse Gym who charges a one time fee and has 5x the amount of equipment and variety in less than half the space.

Absolutey regret wasting time and money on this place. I'd go to a Planet Fitness or prison courtyard before I stepped foot back in here.

Why is it so hot in this gym all of the sudden since last year?? I have a thermostat on my phone that tells me it’s between 73-77 degrees in here sometimes.. like why?? I asked the manager a few times, and he literally just laughed it off and shrugged. His attitude was like , “ it’s fine to me-must be justyou.” But I literally see people getting beet red all over after short runs and shirts completely drenched in sweat..so weird. Overall ok gym, clean and does the job. Machines work well.

This place is an absolute SCAM! I ended my contract with them over two months ago and they STILL keep charging me even after following all the steps to end the membership!! The personal training offered is also a complete SCAM!! The trainers never have time for you, they cancel on you last minute and yet constantly charge you almost $500 a month even though it's their fault that you can't use the time slots! Zero refunds or even common curiosity!!

New ownership is detestable. Will intentionally mislead you regarding the contract & cancellation. Also blatantly lied to my face about waiving the enhancement fee when I originally signed. You have to jump through hoops to get anything refunded, if you even can. I’ve been trying for about a month and management never follows through on their word.

The gym itself is good.

I’ve been a member for like 4 years and used to love golds but now, this gym represents everything wrong with commercial gyms. Trust me they don’t deserve your business👎

This particular branch of Golds Gym, under the helm of a purported general manager, showcases a profound lack of competence and respect, undermining the very essence of the franchise.

While a few standout staff members like Abbey shed a glimmer of hope, a disturbing cloud looms over the establishment in the form of an individual responsible for the children's area Theresa Dennehy. Her apparent mental instability raises dire concerns, rendering it hazardous to entrust children under her care.

My interaction with this gym was nothing short of a calamity. As a former military veteran seeking to rebuild my life, the two-week pass availed me a temporary sanctuary. However, my attempt to utilize basic facilities for personal upkeep culminated in an ordeal that could only be described as a gross miscarriage of justice.

Being summarily expelled from the premises, with disproportionate police involvement and an unwarranted year-long ban, all for the simple act of occupying a chair in the men's locker room, epitomizes an egregious mishandling of a mundane situation.

In essence, the treatment I endured wasn't merely disrespectful—it was an assault on fundamental human dignity. As someone endeavoring to reintegrate into civilian life post-service, the lack of empathy or understanding was not just disappointing but a display of the gross inadequacy and callousness exhibited by the general manager. This incident, indicative of the establishment's evident lack of professionalism and decorum, should serve as a cautionary tale to prospective patrons.

The Golds Gym branch in question presents an unsettling portrait of incompetence and a severe lack of respect, exacerbated by the deplorable conduct of its supposed leader, the general manager.

While a small glimmer of hope is found in a few exceptional staff members like Abbey, a distressing cloud looms over the establishment in the form of Theresa Dennehy responsible for the children's area. Her apparent mental instability and potential danger to children underline a grave concern, casting a shadow on the safety of patrons’ young ones.

My experience within the walls of this gym transcended disappointment, plunging into the realm of sheer calamity. As a military veteran seeking to rebuild a shattered life, the hope was that this gym would offer respite. However, the brief respite was swiftly overshadowed by an ordeal that metamorphosed into a gross violation of respect and human dignity.

The humiliation I endured, being summarily ejected from the premises, stands as a testament to the gross mishandling of a situation. The intrusive involvement of law enforcement and an unjustifiable year-long ban, all stemming from the mere act of occupying a chair in the men's locker room for a mere 10 minutes before preparing for work, is a grotesque display of overreach and incompetence on the part of the management.

The pain and embarrassment incurred were profound. To be subjected to the irrational and disproportionate involvement of police over such a triviality was not just an affront to my dignity but a stark indication of the establishment's lack of compassion and common sense.

The humiliation of being publicly embarrassed by the staff's actions in an environment where one should feel safe and respected is an experience that lingers deeply. The total lack of understanding, empathy, or even basic communication in handling a member, who was merely utilizing the facilities in good faith, was not just disheartening but a severe blow to the principles of respect and decency.

This incident was not just an individual mishap but an indictment of the establishment's blatant disregard for the human element in their pursuit of superficial rules. The lasting impact of the disgraceful treatment endured within the walls of this gym serves as a stark warning to any potential patrons considering patronizing such an establishment.

The equipment is ok but the cleanliness is the worst I’ve seen compared to any other gym in the area. The bathrooms constantly smell like sewage and something is always broken. I do not recommend this gym to anybody besides the equipment being old and out of service. I canceled my membership with this gym a year ago they continue to charge me, and when I finally find out, I change my bank information and all of that they refuse to reimburse me for the whole year, and on top of that they have the nerve to tell me that I had a past due balance, and for that reason, I cannot cancel my account, so I do not recommend this gym to nobody and if you do just make sure you double check and pay attention to your bank account because they will continue take they payment like if you never cancel you membership

Absolutely disgusting! The toilets have been locked by the general manager because he "didn't want to clean them anymore" and now that there are no toilets to use during business hours, desperate people have resorted to using the shower stalls as their place to vacate their bowels. When I spoke with the GM to cancel the membership due unhygienic conditions he stated "if you can't use the bathroom at home before your workout, it's not my problem". Utterly appalled at the unprofessionalism, lack of customer service and the blatant disregard for personal health and wellbeing.

DO NOT RECOMMEND. I would not refer anyone to Gold’s Gym. I recently had some life changes that made me decide to cancel my membership, only to be told that I’m locked in until 2025. No one told me when I signed up that it would be a 3 year contract. It is misleading and deceitful. You are rushed through the sign-up process, and nothing in the contract is explained. I was even told that I could cancel my membership at any time without penalty. I’m being told that I either have to live 25 miles away from a location, I have to get a disability form completed by a doctor (which they denied), or I have to pay an outrageous fee that would cover the entirety of the payments for the 3 year contract. Absolutely absurd. I will never be a customer at Gold’s Gym again, and I will tell everyone to avoid it at all costs.

Utterly horrendous. Gym equipment is in constant state of disrepair despite the upkeep fees, with multiple pieces of equipment being out of commission for weeks or months at a time (with the lat pulldowns and seated cable row machines being the most common culprit, one of which is currently down as of today). Management is terrible, in two years I've seen every single staff position quit or get fired at least twice. They try to get you to sign your contract via the front register where you only see a digital signature prompt rather than the contract itself, with the person at the desk conveniently leaving out the fact that items are set to auto-renew without notice (specifically the personal trainer sessions). Upon trying to cancel in person in writing, I was told that I had to call customer service, who told me to do so in person. Will be changing gyms as soon as possible.

Don't ever join a Gold's Gym. I've been trying to cancel my membership for over 3 months. I haven't been there in since Mar 2020. My original contract expired 2/4/2022. After calling the Gold's LKN location in Jan 2022, to tell them I would not be renewing, they informed me that Peak Payments handles all payments and I would need to contact them. After 3 months of going back and forth with Peak Payments, it was determined that because my account was frozen during COVID, my contract was automatically extended for 3 months, to ensure Gold's could collect on the 3 month's they gave credit for during COVID. I never authorized an extension of contract. Peak Payments is completely unorganized with multiple reps sending emails and calls, all to tell me I still owed money for a contract that expired 2/4/2022. I'm exhausted of Peak and the lack of ownership of Gold's part to resolve the issue. A similar situation happened at the Pittsburgh Gold's location ~5 years ago, prior to Peak being involved. It seems to be a scam that's thoughtfully executed throughout multiple locations and it's mentally exhausting to deal with on a day to day basis. I'd advise to never join this gym!

Cool and friendly staff, but the facilities definitely need some attention, the sauna the mens locker-room is janky, some of the equipment isn’t in the best condition, and the boxing gloves provided in the boxing gym are all old and torn. But overall satisfactory experience, the weights and facilities get the job done.

I remember attending the Mooresville location. Unfortunately, the owner of this establishment is as horrible as they come. They'll con users into a 3-year contract and threaten to report their account. They have to lock users in because their gym is complete trash and considering the Mooresville location, I doubt this one is any better. The owner is just living off the Gold's gym name.

With Anytime Fitness, Jet fitness, and even Planet Fitness, you'll find much better options, at less the price.

After multiple attempts to call the gym and cancel my membership I finally went in person and had the membership canceled. That was 6 months ago and they are still drafting fees from my bank account.

To make things worse I called the number for the general manager the owner gave me in their response to this review. The GM told me the membership could not be canceled at the gym and that I would have to reach out to the billing company. The billing company told me the membership could be canceled by email but it would take 30 days. It would be nice if even the owner or the GM knew his company's own cancelation policy.

The payment company and this gym will rob you of your money. I cancelled with them, then they renewed me without my permission while never mentioning to me they needed something in writing. That's correct, you need to cancel in writing for a gym membership. You don't need to do this for utilities. The staff isn't helpful or knowledgeable of this process nor were they ever any good when I did go to this gym. If they are still selling smoothies beware! I've seen dogs behind and on the counter multiple times in the evenings with no one around. The gym isn't clean and "Doc" hates any friendly suggestions made to him. This gym is by far the worse business in the area and should be closed. Stay away.

Will bait and switch you on signup. Tell you on the phone the price is x and when you get there it is Y. They will tell you you get $50 off, but then the $50 is given to you as overpriced powders/supplements. The sneak a auto-renew clause in the contract. Then when you go to cancel they tell you that it must be in writing and 30 days notice, so you will have to pay them again.

The gym and the staff are great but who they use as a payment processor is terrible. They use peak payment, and it's the absolute worst. I moved to Idaho 7 months ago, and they still haven't let me cancel. I provided all the proper paperwork, but they ignore your emails. I’ve emailed them over 100 times this past seven months, and they’ve only emailed me back twice. Now they want to charge me a $50 cancellation fee even though I fulfilled my original two-year contract. I’ve been trying to tell them that for the past three weeks... but again, they ignore you until your contract automatically renews. Cancellations should be a lot simpler. Again, the gym and staff are great, but it’s easier to get out of a military contract than getting out of this one.

On top of making the cancellation process as difficult as possible, they lost my cancellation request, continued to charge me, and then management insinuated that I was lying about sending the cancellation request because it was lost in the multitudes of emails they send members in an effort to confuse them when trying to cancel. I'd like to start out saying its a nice gym with a variety of equipment.

Now that said, the upper management is not so great. Working for EY as a consultant, I travel into Lake Norman every week, so I signed up for a year agreement with Gold's LN. After the year has passed, I wanted to cancel, but I was informed that I still had a year on my agreement. After an exchange of words with their staff and GM, I can tell they were very much undertrained and not trusted by their upper management since they kept telling me they can't do anything in their computers because corporate doesn't allow them to change anything in the system.

So, I finally got to speak with the VP, Mike Rattenni. He was definitely NO help and just more of a glorified GM. I've been consulting business for over 20 years for EY and I know a narcissist when I see one. Thinking he was more in-charge than he really was. Much so he was lying to himself. Type of guy that always talks about, me, me, me.

I called a few of the other Gold's in the area that they own, and finally got Sharon Masons number. After talking to her, I gathered she is the mother of the owner. Again, she had no clue what she was doing or they are just really good at playing dumb to send people in circles to get a question and stall time.

Anyways, I had the payments on my AMEX and disputed all charges, so it worked out in the end.

Like I said, good gym with variety of equipment, but ding bat of people.

Personal Trainer – Ryan Daining at Gold’s Gym Lake Norman is outstanding!!! I cannot say enough good things about Ryan Daining. His depth and breath of knowledge in fitness and nutrition, his pleasant personality and his sincere commitment to help me meet my fitness goals are only some of what makes him the best trainer I’ve ever worked with. He has helped me to overcome a knee injury that doctors said may likely never be strong enough to strength train again. As a female over 50 – this was very concerning. With Ryan’s training program and his supoort, not only can I do the basic things in life without pain, I can also run again! It is life changing! Ryan and the staff are what keep me returning to Gold’s year after year.

I am so thankful to have the opportunity to give feedback on, by far, the best trainer I've ever hired. Ryan trains every member of my family. His passion and his knowledge in the sport of powerlifting encouraged both my sons to join powerlifting competitions. They are setting goals for themselves and achieving those goals under Ryan's watchful eye. Ryan is always available to my family and goes well beyond basic technique building. The encouragement and the professionalism he gives to my sons is nothing short of absolutely wonderful.

My daughter who trains with Ryan two days a week is interested in just strength training. Ryan's approach with her is so gentle and so encouraging, that this is really the only sport she's willing to participate in. So
I'm thrilled he has made it possible that fitness is part of her life.

I too train with Ryan. My fitness goals are weight loss and degenerative disease prevention. I train with Ryan three days a week and I do cardio on my own. I can't believe how strong I actually have become. Never thought I would be squatting, but I am. Surprisingly I'm actually more comfortable weighing myself in front of Ryan then by myself. That is what kind of trainer Ryan is. He's 100% supportive of his clients needs. We are also grateful to have him in our lives we absolutely love him and value him as our family's trainer.

A word on Zack, I am not sure what his exact title is but I believe he is a regional manager. He too participates with Ryan and watches my sons progress constantly. Again, the support, service and just overall care they have shown my family is just amazing.
In a school paper, my youngest son actually identified Ryan and Zack as the two greatest role models in his life. That indeed speaks directly to the true impact they have had.

If you're looking for a trainer that cares about your fitness goals, will help you build confidence over your insecurities and develop personal expectations that you never thought you could achieve. Look no further....Ryan needs to be your trainer!

I have a great time and always look forward to my sessions. 5-star trainer without a doubt - you won't go wrong with Ryan.

The staff was friendly and helpful while I lived there and the gym was clean and well-maintained. However, when I moved for my residency, it took almost a year to get someone on the phone to find out how to cancel a membership (after monthly unanswered calls/emails), resulting in over $150 worth of unnecessary charges. Once I did get a young girl on the phone, she was very kind, but unsure of the cancellation process and what needed to be completed. This gym is a perfect place for you, so long as you never plan to move or if you are ok with paying a monthly fee for the rest of you life.

Golds gym bought my old gym, then added a 30 day written cancellation clause without my knowledge. I have to pay for the next 2 months to cancel, even though I haven't been to this location they purchased for 5 years. No flexibility, all they want is your money. Avoid this gym.

As for having a "written 30 day policy in my agreement", that clause was NOT in my signed paperwork which was prior to being purcahsed by Golds, which they cannot even locate. It still doesn't deter them from charging me though...

Today while training at Gold’s Gym in Lake Norman a staff member approached me during my workout to tell me that I was “f***ing pathetic” that I “needed to learn how to lift” and that “I should join a different gym.” After asking him to mind his own business numerous times a small group of individuals over heard the encounter and he ended his belligerent and unwarranted rant at that time. As someone who is new to the area and consequently this gym I am simply floored that someone (let alone an employee) would have the audacity to treat someone with such blatant disrespect. I would recommend considering a different gym if you are new to the fitness industry to avoid the risk of having a similar encounter to the one I had today. I have been going to this location since I relocated here for work and have not had any issues. I am hopeful that this is a one time event and that the verbal abuse does not continue. I am hopeful that management takes swift disciplinary action against this individual to avoid similar encounters with other new, existing or prospective Gold’s Gym members.

The place is a dump. The cardio equipment is trashed and most just need a dumpster. They have been telling members for months new cardio equipment is coming along with new flooring. The carpet is very dirty and torn. The locker rooms are filthy. Torn pads on equipment. One piece of equipment was down over two weeks! Do yourself a favor and tour other gyms BEFORE you join here.
