I have had great experiences here up until today. I finished my turbo kickboxing class then proceeded to get a basketball from the front desk. When I asked them for one, their response is "we don't have anymore because people aren't returning them". At other YMCAs, they require you to give them your car keys to get a basketball. The incentive is that you have to return the basketball to get your keys back. It would make alot of sense to enforce this policy. You will not have your basketballs stolen. It is unfair to people that follow the rules and want to play basketball.

Cleanliness is nonexistent. I've been a member of the ymca for 10yrs
I visited the workout room for the 1st time at this facility. My workout was for 50min on the treadmill I observed NO ONE CLEANING AFTER NOR BEFORE their workout. Pretty disgusting. After my workout I took my Grandson to the youth pool. He had a life vest on in the 3ft pool. He stands 4ft and was working on being more confident with holding his breath. I kept my eye on his every move while I was sitting in the same pool. Eventually Exactly 20 children joined us in the same pool with 2 counselors and then there was just 1 counselor for all 20 children. With so many children There was no way I could stand by his side in this tiny pool at this point. As a responsible I was not only observing my child I was also looking out for the safety of all the children that were being children at play (flipping and jumping). I find it funny how it was acceptable for 1 counselor to care for so many children by herself and im perceived as irresponsible for my 1 child?every summer we often visit several of the ymca pools and have never been treated negatively nor HARRASSED the way we were at the HARRIS YMCA. There was 1 old man lifeguard kept harassing me about my child's every move making for an uncomfortable experience. My child was eventually discouraged and asked if we could leave. Do Better

I LOVE this y for classes (especially the barre class!!) the gym is clean, and my kids love the child watch (which can be so hard to find and I’m so grateful for it)

BUT (and it’s a big one) the outdoor pool was one of the most miserable experiences I’ve had in a while. Every staff member (only pool staff, again the indoor staff is all lovely and so helpful and cheerful) was miserable to interact with. We stayed maybe 15 minutes and were yelled at four separate times. We’ve been to the other y pools with 0 problems, we make sure to follow the rules and I’m mindful to stay on top of my kids to make sure they’re next to me. My oldest has her yellow band and was yelled at for being too far away from me in 1 1/2 ft of water (I double checked with a lifeguard and she was supposedly allowed to swim if the water was armpit level or below). After the fourth time of being yelled at in the splash pad area (I’m not even sure for what that last time) I pulled my kids and we decided to leave because being around the staff who is so blatantly rude and aggressive isn’t something I’m interested or comfortable being around. It’s worth the 30 minute drive to Brace JUST to avoid the terrible pool staff at Harris.

This YMCA sucks! They close super early and their outdoor pool does too! Not like Dowd, Morrison or Simmons that stay open late. Dowd has a jacuzzi in their locker rooms and stays open until 11 pm I wish they did the same. Their indoor pool is always closed. The staff here is also not friendly or welcoming at all. Super rude and disgusting. Fire them!

The people here are very friendly, both the staff and other patrons. That’s really the only positive. The gym itself is the worst I’ve ever seen. Equipment rusted, cable machines need lubed, grips torn or missing, way too few weight plates and nobody ever working to unrack and organize them, when AC kicks on sounds like a rattling train, dimly lit areas, sad/inadequate ceiling fans for cardio, no paper towels in smaller men’s bathroom, way too few pieces of equipment to handle after work rush. Positives are that WiFi is strong and the location is good. The nice people of the ymca should visit the new crunch at arboretum and see what is available for 1/3 of the price. Or any old planet fitness is even a step up. If you use the pools maybe this is worth it, but otherwise it’s an aging , sad facility.

Disappointed Parent — This Program Needs Urgent Oversight

As a parent of children who have both attended and worked in the afterschool and summer programs at this YMCA location, I feel compelled to speak up about some deeply troubling experiences.

In recent months, we’ve witnessed a dramatic decline in program quality, staff morale, and overall safety. What was once a trusted and enriching environment has become tense, disorganized, and frankly uncomfortable — both for the children and the young adults working there.

A major concern is the lack of clear leadership and accountability. Staff roles are being blurred, and individuals not officially tasked with running the program are instead taking charge, rewriting procedures, and making unauthorized changes that have left both employees and parents confused and frustrated.

There have also been highly inappropriate staff interactions with young participants — particularly around sensitive conversations that should be handled with care and discretion. Several situations have made children and staff feel uncomfortable, and this has not been adequately addressed.

Additionally, there are ongoing concerns about mismanagement of resources. Reports of employees being scheduled off-book or used for tasks outside their role have circulated, which seems to be impacting the program’s ability to provide basic materials and experiences for the kids — including food, supplies, and core activities.

Several families have since withdrawn their children from the program, and many young staff members have expressed that they no longer feel supported or heard.

Despite complaints being raised through appropriate channels, no meaningful change has occurred. It feels as though accountability is being actively avoided, and the program continues to suffer as a result.

This YMCA is meant to be a safe, inclusive, and structured place for our youth. At present, that mission is not being upheld.

I sincerely hope the leadership team takes a hard look at what’s going on and takes corrective action — not only for the sake of current families, but to preserve the integrity of the Y for future ones.

My family loves this place. The kids love the indoor playhouse. I love all the amenities and the update gym. My kids are involved through Y kids a drop in or morning out service, they do swim lessons, and they are participants in summer specialty camps. The cost of this YMCA is worth it especially if your employer covers a portion of the monthly premium. The thing I would change about this location is to keep it open longer.

I wish I could give zero stars to this location. My family loves the YMCA don’t get me wrong … and they’re not all bad, but THIS LOCATION RIGHT HERE BOY.

We’ve had not one but 3 HORRIBLE experiences spread out over several years. We kept coming back thinking maybe it’s gotten better over the years… it hasn’t.

Out door Pool staff of 2024 is as racist as ever surprise surprise. Over heard two lifeguards making disgusting comments about other families. Pretty much anybody who isn’t a white suburban mom is getting clowned by the staff and don’t you dare try to say anything about it. You’ll be ignored.

My son lost his green band from his last swim test so we requested another one and they told us he would have to retest. Ok. No problem. Except for shortly after we watched the staff hand out a green band to a kid they LIKED who didn’t have to test at all. The icing on the cake is the lifeguards yelling at myself and another CHILD (not my child) for swimming too far from an adult despite having the green band… so let me get this straight… my son has to take a swim test to get a green band that proves he is a strong swimmer but the staff will have your behind if they’re more than an arms length away from you. My husband and I watched it all day… So I have a child who can swim. Within 2 feet of me, and I’m being yelled at… so what is the point of the bands?!?! And what’s the point of a life guard if my child has to take a swim test to enter the pool AND stays next to me… like why even have a staff? Cause if we breathe wrong we’re getting yelled at. Period.

The staff will also make sure to speak to you In the most extreme rude degrading way they possibly can. And if you try to defend yourself you will be ignored OR they will tag team and gang up on you.

Again… this is not just me and my family. We watched this take place for HOURS to several people.

They reprimanded another kid during our stay. Who was brought to tears and insisted that she knew the rules because her dad worked there… and what do you know, life guard called his buddy over and they both tag teamed this kid. Two young adults arguing with a child….

The second hand embarrassment I get from this place.

Had an issue with my card one time because of a system error and the front desk lady is very elderly (bless her. I get it) but she had absolutely no clue what to do so accused us of lying about having real memberships even though I showed her a photo on my phone from when we were there THE DAY BEFORE. After 15 minutes of accusing us of being liars she finally finds us in the system (imagine that) and then tells us that we really shouldn’t even be coming on a Saturday because it’s really for more active members and it’s so busy so maybe we could not come on the weekends anymore.

I’m sorry what?

We pay for our membership like everyone else. We mind our business. We clean up after ourselves etc etc but this facility SPECIFICALLY will go out of its way to harass you and enforce RIDICULOUS “rules” that don’t apply to anybody else.

Paying 88$ a month to be bullied is CRAZY

And you should hear some of the other mom’s stories about Harris.

Anyways. I’m not a bitter Karen I promise and I have the upmost respect for everyone but trust me when I say this place is NOT IT. If you want to go to the ymca… pick a different one.

Next summer I will literally pay the 500$ for my local pool just to avoid the staff here.

We’ve been coming to the Harris YMCA for the last year. After a year of using the upper workout area we were asked to please wrap up due to the staff having to close the upper area early. It was 8:15pm and this YMCA closes at 9am. It’s a huge disappointment to be limited on the facility. I would recommend shopping around for gym options before becoming a member.

You can never book a lane, it's always full. Basketball open gym times are terrible. They have a 30 day policy so if you cancel within 30 days of your next draft date you will still be charged. They make it really difficult to cancel. You have to fill out a form and then they email you. On top of all of this, I cancelled and they continued to charge my account for a full year before I noticed

I really want to like this YMCA location but there’s just so many inconveniences. Aside from the endless high schoolers that ego lift in here and take their sweet time flexing in the mirror and scrolling tiktok, there’s a ton of updating needed. The men’s locker room smells of rot and it’s hard to breathe in there. Literally smells like there are dead bodies somewhere. On top of that, the sauna probably hasn’t been touched in 50 years. It’s full of nasty rot, mold, mildew and who knows what else. The smell in the locker room and sauna are driving people nuts and it’s so insane to me the staff won’t do anything about it. If I ran a business where it was hard for my paying customers to breathe, that would be my top priority. I’ve mentioned this many times to employees but no one cares.

I needed to cancel a class because I had lost my job at the time. I pulled my daughter and reached out. No one answered the phone. They then transferred me to the financial department who stated that I needed to speak to the department directly. Jane kept sending me to a number whose voice-mail was full. I kept calling to no avail and it was a cycle. The issue still hasn't been fixed. If I call today I can guarantee the same thing will happen. I've been doing this process since September.

This seems like a good deal. If one enjoys filthy dressing room conditions, this is for you! The Dowd YMCA is gross! The dust on the tops of the lockers in men’s area is so thick one could sow grass seeds! The inside of daily lockers are very unsanitary with trash, used bandaids, paper towels. Stains, spilled shampoo and who knows what! These have been sited for months! The Harris Y is totally unacceptable especially in the men’s sauna and steam room! Mold and mildew everywhere! A dangerous situation. So, with that said, I’m not going to renew my membership! Please clean these unsanitary sites. Very filthy and unsanitary!! The Dowd stopped towel service and upped the price of membership!! Guest service is horrible! To many non essential non-guest related associates.I realize membership is down, so you cut staff yet pay the ceo millions! Non-profit, that’s a joke!

I would definitely recommend this gym to you. The basketball gym is great for playing around and there are also dance classes you can take here as well. There are cycling classes, summer camps, and a kid spot if you need to drop off your child for the day. The workout rooms have many varieties of machines and weights, targeting every part of the body. Above the gym there is a small track along with some cardio machines. The only reason I rate this place 4 stars instead of 5 is because of their pool hours. Their outdoor pool has hours I can’t even remember, it is open at some times and then not at others. The indoor pool is only open from somewhere around 12-2, which in my opinion, is extremely short. Other than the pool, everything else is great. I come here all the time to workout.

I have been a member of the Y for decades. This location no longer opens up the gym for basketball and they shut the pool down during prime hours for camp. The staff needs some service training. It's not like it used to be.

I am very frustrated by my recent experience as a member at the Y. I have lived in Charlotte all my life and have been a member of the YMCA on and off throughout my time here. The YMCA was always a place I could go as a kid to enjoy my time, play some basketball, go to the teen center, swim or even just socialize with friends.

The YMCA in its current form is not the YMCA I grew up with. When I brought my 10 year old daughter to play basketball on a Saturday morning we were looked at with disdain by the front desk and told we were NOT allowed to play basketball until a designated time due to classes being held in the gym. The front-desk associate made us feel unwelcome even though we pay for a family membership to this facility.

We went in to use the indoor track and found that the entire gym is taken up by 13 people for an exercise class that could be held in a multipurpose room.

The basketball facility hours are not reasonable for children. Often the only times available are 5am-7am or after 7pm at night which is not feasible when my daughter goes to bed at 9pm. There are huge swaths of time throughout the day where the basketball facility is inaccessible and there are no classes going on. For example today there is a block of time from 11am until 5pm where there are no classes in the facility but families and more importantly kids and teens who need things to do to stay out of trouble cannot access the basketball court less they be turned away with frowns and unkind words at the front desk.

There is no teen center facility or any other facility for kids to socialize, play games or be entertained. When I was a Y member at my daughter's age we played pool, ping pong, video games and had a TV in the teen activity center. Then the entire dance studio as it is now, was launched as the YMCA teen center and it was THE place to be after school if you were 12-16. This no longer exists in any form at the Harris YMCA.

It feels as though the YMCA has drifted from a family and kid oriented place to something that is vastly different from what I grew up with and what I want my children experiencing. We should be welcome at the facility not immediately turned away and treated with disdain because we are carrying a basketball.

I doubt anyone reads this in its entirety but please understand that I am not alone in this feeling and there are several families that I have recommended to this facility that are experiencing similar lack of access and the feeling of not being welcomed. The basketball court should be open any time there are not classes going on, and classes should be able to accommodate and share the space given the several thousand dollar divider for the gym that exists.

Besides all of the above I recently went by myself to the facility to exercise and use the sauna afterwards. I was appalled upon entering the men's locker room to find that it had been completely untouched in the past 10+ years. The sauna is gross, the wood benches are decrepit and stained with a decade or more of sweat and body odor. The steam room is unbearably smelly. The entire men's locker room facility looks completely run down, dated and uncleaned.

I am extremely disappointed and will be looking elsewhere for a facility that better fits families looking to be involved with youth sports and to provide a place for their children to socialize and grow as young people.

Gigabit Ethernet too slow to make split second reservation. Refreshed multiple times on the hour every hour and half hour to go from being too early to make a reservation (22 hours in advance) to being told immediately all lanes are booked. The YMCA has lost all my respect. As a college kid I'd love to go to the gym during the summer months and winter break. That was made possible by a student fee which was 10 visits for $50. I went back to renew only to be told there was no student deal anymore. At 20 years old I am too old for the youth pass and I do not need a full membership. To not be able to use a youth pass because I am over 18 even though I am still paying is complete blasphemy. After working for years there, it hurts there is no loyalty to former employees. A non-profit in it for the wrong reasons, shameful.

I am very disappointed in this facility. We had been members in the past and joined again as we like to swim in the indoor pool. We tried to use the indoor pool and were told the pools are only open until 6pm. Went back again to use the indoor pool at 4pm. It is only open for lap swim and you can no longer use it for pure enjoyment.

We do not like the outdoor pool as we are very pale and hate putting sunscreen on. The whole point of joining the Y again was so we could use that indoor pool for our enjoyment. I am paying my monthly fee so my family may have full use of the facilities. Now you can only use the indoor pool in the way we used to between 12 and 2(I think)

This location is nice and very big. Sadly, when they remodeled this place they should have put more equipment in. You’ll be waiting forever just for one specific machine because there’s only 1 of everything. My biggest complaint is that this location is overrun with kids and teenagers. They monopolize the machines by all congregating around and making a social event of the gym. Don’t even get me started on seeing kids sit on machines and just take videos of themselves on their phones. Younger kids will also be there despite the “if you’re under this age you need a parent” rule. They use the machines to joke around on. No one police’s these situations. Currently trying to find a better gym that isn’t overrun and has more equipment. It’s hard to get a decent work out in when half the equipment is never available.

Very disappointed with this YMCA. We joined because of the family friendly atmosphere and to use the indoor swimming pool with our kids. The biggest issue is with the family locker rooms. They regularly have rude teenagers smoking and drinking in them (I’ve witnessed it multiple times) and have grown men using the family locker room, and not with their kids (there is an adults only locker room down the hall…). It hasn’t been fixed. It’s not a place I am comfortable taking my kids any longer. It’s a shame since we love the actual pool, but kids shouldn’t have to see that stuff every time they want to swim.

The Harris Y is a very big Y with everything you need. The gym is spacious and very nice with ample equipment and free weights. Also, the basketball courts are very nice. The pool and steam rooms are also fantastic. The staff are also very cordial. This is definitely my favorite Y in the Charlotte area and I would highly recommend visiting.

Not a fan of this YMCA as someone else mentioned how do you have an entire court for basketball but only open it for 3 hours out of the day in two separate 1 hr and a hlf increments to play??? Some ppl only have the YMCA membership to use the indoor facilities. VERY DISAPPOINTING! NO WONDER THE OUTSIDE parks are always packed. Once the summer is over it would be nice to go inside to play. And also go inside when it's too hot. The employees are not very helpful either. Unfortunately this is the closest Y to where I live or I would never step foot inside of there.

How do you have a basketball gym that ID literally built specifically for basketball but it’s only available for basketball about 2-3 hours per day? They don’t stick to the schedule that ID posted which wastes gas and more importantly… TIME. They will close the entire basketball gym so that 12 people can group exercise, even when they have multiple rooms that allow for that? I don’t mind the kids being in there 8 hours per day but the other stuff is just ridiculous… do better

Before the pandemic my daughter was taking gymnastics classes, she was almost 4yrs old by the time, her instructors were amazing! Now she is 6 yrs old and asked me to go back, so we went back and this time the experience was not as we expected, the young ladies spent a lot of time on their phone, even my daughter told me she didn't want to go anymore because the teacher was more time on her phone that teaching her something.
Very disappointed, I'm glad I didn't become member.

I like the space and the staff for the most part.

I wish they would do something about the flock of teenagers and pre-teens who congregate in the gym when they are on school break. Not sure what can be done, but the inappropriate gym behavior and hogging areas to sit and talk is heavily distracting.

When I stopped by and asked about joining, and if I could get a tour, the front desk personnel seemed annoyed I was even there. I was told “we don’t have time for tours.” I felt like I was a bother even asking, which is bad since I’ve been a member of a few different YMCA locations in CLT and I’ve always felt welcomed by the staff.

Right now it's disappointing... For all the right reasons. They are so restricted as to what they can allow. But help is on the way, especially for us older folk. Hopefully they can restart exercise classes for us once we've had the vaccine (s) Oh, I do have a complaint though. They have started back drafting money from my bank account even though I haven't been there a single day since this pandemic started.

Power Yoga in and of itself is refreshing and enlightening. Amy’s teaching of Power Yoga is transformative. Combine that with a YMCA that operates efficiently and with the safety/wellness of its patrons as a focal point, you end up with 5 Stars! (And I won’t even mention the wonderful, diverse, philanthropic community that I sense each and every time I walk in this Y...amazing.)

Came to the pool tonight and left feeling overwhelmingly frustrated. I've spent 10+ years as a lifeguard/lifeguard trainer myself, and would be disappointed in myself if these were guards I had trained. We were there for 90 minutes. The water slide wasn't open, the water features were off, and every couple of minutes, we were told we were breaking some rule. At guard change, the male guard (the only one there) told the next guard to "watch out for that one", and pointed at us, like we were doing something dangerous. I have 4 kids, aged 2 through 9, my oldest 2 can swim proficiently (green bands), and my youngest 2 had puddle jumpers on. We were the only people there, but you would have thought they were over capacity. Everything was too dangerous or made to sound like I was being negligent. My kids were following all the basic pool rules (no running, no diving, no rough play) but they and I were scolded several times by each guard (and they were rotating every half 15 minutes or so). It was exhausting. It almost felt like they were intentionally trying to ruin our time there. If you aren't kid friendly, just close the pool to kids and be done with it.

The lifeguards, which I guess are moody teenagers, can be very rude. Today I saw this lifeguard, a girl, scream and I mean scream because I was almost by the exit doors towards the gym, to this 5 or 6 year old "DOWN!!". Like when pet owners yelled at their dogs... Awful. I was leaving with my family, but I wish I had turned around to get her name. Don't scream to a lil kid like that. Talk to her parents, there's no need for that... I'm reaching out to the Ymca as well, because it's not the first time I see this behavior from lifeguards.

I have never experienced a childcare center as amazing, nurturing, caring and loving as the Harris YMCA Child center. I’ve been taking my son, Prescott, there since he was 18 months. And truly, each teacher goes above and beyond everyday to make sure my precious son is taken care of. The level of detail, and attention to care is immeasurable. Not to mention, they are so consistent, enough where they essentially helped potty train my son which was really hard for me to do given my work schedule. I’m forever grateful to them, for their amazing work, being the watchful eye while we workout or run errands. I never worry for a second when Prescott is in their care. I feel a special connection to Adriana, Linda, Ashley and Tamara, but all of the teachers are beyond amazing! I’m grateful for them!

Could use an extra lane, but it’s nice. Lots of lounge chairs, plenty of space.
Enjoyed the steam room in the ladies locker room, which was also well kept.
There’s also a massage studio, prices are affordable. Lee was offering complimentary chair massage, great job! My neck and shoulders feel so much better, Thank You!
