I have been a member of the YMCA off and on for more than 10 years. I like the Y because you have the option to use your membership at different locations. I also like how they offer different types of exercise classes, pools and saunas. I do want to say that consistently for the number of times I’ve gone to the YMCA Hickory location SPECIFICALLY, the staff are ALWAYS rude and have a terrible attitude .0They are incredibly inconsiderate and unhelpful. I had a specific incident to where I was unaware that the sauna closed earlier than the actual gym, and I went in by accident not thinking. One of the staff members came and stood i. the doorway staring at me until finally I said “Hello” and he proceeded to tell me they were closed as I started gathering my things, expressing that I was unaware, he answered “well clearly the sauna is off.” Another incident I had was that I was on the treadmill around 8:45pm and had my headphones in and a staff member waved her arms to get my attention and starting making “it’s almost time” gestures pointing at her wristwatch. The Y is one of the more expensive gyms in the area, and has the shortest operating hours. They should understand that people have different work schedules and would like to use ALL of the allotted gymnasium operating hours.

The Hickory Foundation YMCA has great facilities. My only issues are the lack of adequate handicap parking. They only have 4 spots available without having to climb stairs or cross the street. Also the lack of a free swim lane in the pool near the steps and handicap ramp. Even Phifer YMCA of Morganton with smaller facilities and a smaller pool keeps plenty of handicap parking and always has 2 out of 5 lanes open for free swim even though the pool is only 5ft deep at Phifer.

Today yall lost my membership and here’s why I was leaving the gym and I watch this rude employee stalk these cleaning lady’s waited till they was at the teen center and started raising hell asking them who they where and why they was parking up front they simply told her the teen center is closed and they have to carry large trash bags and she threatened there job if they didn’t move the work vehicle because it wasn’t closing time yet she then turned around and closed the doors early at 8:30 so what’s the reason of making that young girl cry for simply doing her job? I heard her say “We will see about that I will have a talk with Logan” and it’s got to be on camera this part is brand new. She then proceeded to stalk them and antagonize them and I will not spend my money at a place that don’t even respect the cleaning lady’s and that was simply uncalled for and this is supposed to be a Christian Place. I don’t tolerate bullying if she’s that miserable with her life she needs to have a check with herself. She’s old got blonde hair and glasses and I took a picture of her when she was stalking them.

Good luck keeping your membership with the YMCA via FITON active. We used ours a number of times in August 2025 and weren't allowed in to the YMCA today because they said we had no memberships and hadn't been there for over a year. You cannot argue with someone who has absolute faith in her computer and none in the people in front of her.

Hickory YMCA is probably the most unprofessional organization I’ve ever dealt with. Their men’s basketball league is a joke to say the least. Signed up in Conover yet every game was at 8:30 in Hickory. Don’t get me started on the referees. My dead dog could make better calls then whoever they pay to ref the games. EVERY game except one was one sided. Genuinely a miracle I didn’t sustain life changing injuries considering the fact you can get trucked with no calls. The referees are so lazy they don’t run up and down the court and make ridiculous calls from opposite of the court. ABBEY TARR does not know how to run an organization or a program AND HIGHLY recommend getting someone who knows how to run an organization. 0/10 would never recommend to anyone. I will never step foot into a YMCA location for the rest of my life. I would leave a 0 star review if possible but sadly I can only leave a 1 star.

I use to love this facility until they recently got a new director and she hired a bunch of her “friends” to the work there. My child recently got moved up to pre-k. He then started having frequent accidents and told me that they wouldn’t allow him to go to the bathroom. I spoke to the director about the problem and she told me the kids aren’t allowed to get up during nap time because there is only one teacher in the room. Also she told me that the kids don’t go to the bathroom before nap! She told she would handle it and that the teachers are new and they are learning. So after that everything was good for about a week and then it went back to the same thing. Before he got moved up in pre k his teachers were amazing, I never had an issue with my son having accidents almost every day.
In a matter of 3 months many kids and teachers have left the facility for many reasons. Many parents have reached out to the state about abuse and neglect also. If I was you I would not send my child to this daycare unless they get a new director and it’s not Cassidy Dale.

I love it here! The people are very nice! I’m part of YSST (the swim team), and I love how amazing the coaches are. I also love the gym!
I’m trying to lose weight, and have avoided gyms in the past since I’m insecure and scared that I’ll be judged, but everyone just minds their business. It’s really clean, too! Smells nice in there, I thought it’d smell like sweat lol. But overall, nice place with nice people.

Dealing with this location has been my only bad Y experience. As a former employee at two other locations, as well as a former visitor of several other branches, I can say there is a serious management problem here. I purchased semi-private swim lessons and after almost 3 weeks with no contact, requested a refund. That was two weeks ago now and I have stop receiving responses from the aquatic director, Ryan, as to the state of that refund. Very disappointed in how this situation was handled and they continue to drop the ball.

Edit to add: I have received a response, still waiting on the refund check. Still disappointed in their customer service all the way around.

Just became a member through my college and I’m kind of new to the area. I only moved here last year, but this is definitely one of the best YMCA’s I’ve ever seen. They have so many options and the pool area is nice and spacious and the Jacuzzi in the sauna is a nice touch too. Also the gym looks awesome. Can’t wait to become a regular here.

My wife is a member at the Hickory Foundation YMCA and she absolutely loves it. Good clean facility, awesome staff and great programs for all ages and all levels of fitness. She loves the upstairs walking track and the water exercise classes. She enjoys the Silver Sneakers classes as well. She says the staff is well trained and always willing to help someone who doesn't know how to use a machine or do a certain task. The Yoga classes are excellent. She wishes they had a Tia Chi class. She loves that fact that they offer a class to help people work on not becoming a diabetic and that there is a cancer survivor class that people can attend. She likes the fact that they reach out to the community and seeks to do things for the teens in our area to keep them on a Christian pathway and keep them out of trouble. She is excited to see the final outcome of the renovations taking place right now. I give it 5 stars for her, it has helped her to keep her weight down and she has lost more weight as well. Which is helping her to keep her diabetes well under control. I am planning on joining her there as soon as my Silver Sneakers kicks in.

I have been a member of the YMCA for over 30 years. It has always been a welcoming place. The classes become like family and all the instructors are great at showing modifications. No class is ever the same and they have tons of variety for all fitness levels. Personal Training is top notch and has helped me over the years to meet my goals. Hello, my name is Gary Woods I used to be a member of the Hickory YMCA for 30 years. I have seen a video of a pregnant employee (I don't know her name) you have working the front desk. It was very disturbing and completely shocking to say the least. She was yelling and screaming at some of her own coworkers at the Conover YMCA children's facility yesterday between 4:30-5 o'clock. My granddaughter was picking up my great granddaughter that attends that children's facility in Conover and if that is the kind of people you have working at your facilities I must admit me and my family will not be members of either facility going forward. The African American pregnant woman that I've seen working at the Hickory location, made my family feel completely unsafe and don't know if I will allow my great granddaughter to go back to that facility ever again. The child she (The African American woman) was slinging around by the arm had braids and he didn't look like he was in a happy or safe environment either. Since this video is spreading and gaining negative momentum I may have to report this to WBTV to shine light on both of these facilities and how you all condone yourselves amongst coworkers. Never in my 71 years of living have I seen on camera and heard such damaging language and lack of character.

I will give it 4 stars for this YMCA. That's because they lack my special butterfly curls equipment that I love to use and I have to free hand weight it. It was an ok place, I went for the gym but good luck getting to use the pool. The pool is one of the selling points for us and when we joined we were never able to use the outdoor pool because you had to call ahead of time to get on a list?? We have a schedule and things that happen.. so setting an appointment for a pool doesn't work oh And they were working on the indoor pool the whole time. My two teen boys are disabled. So, because of this they are unable to join due to no one being educated to help them. Although if we the parents join then we are more than welcome. That's a little discriminating and disappointing. I am a full time stay at home mom, and my husband is a Detention Officer for Catawba County. Therefore, we only have certain days we could go. I think we can do better for our disabled people.

The YMCA itself is beautiful. Customer service is ok. The rules as well as lifeguards can be ridiculous. Get a pool schedule before you start going to the pool because you pay for full access but there are many times my family and I have went not being able to swim due to some activity that takes up the whole pool. 😕

My family and I moved to hickory in June. Our neighbors told us to join the Y for swimming and exercise. This is the best YMCA I have ever seen. They have 2 pools an indoor and outdoor. A sauna a hot tub, huge gym, yoga classes, basketball courts a teen center and more. My daughter who is 9 joined the swim team and she loves it. It has been great exercise and really helped her acclamate to the community. Everyone who works or attends is very friendly and helpful

Conover Ymca is much better. Staff treat you like human beings and the overall atmosphere is more welcoming. The hickory Ymca were super disrespectful this past summer when they changed their outdoor pool guidelines that really didn’t make any sense. Hire enough people, pay more, but don’t let your business lose its reputation. Only thing the hickory Y has goin for it is the double gymnasium and the outdoor pool members can’t even use now lol.

Out of all the YMCAs in my area this one is the most consistent. My biggest issue is that the hot tub is usually not working. Also this will be the first summer in my life that I didn't go swimming in the outdoor pool. It has been a hassle with the shortage of lifeguards, so people have to make reservations to use the pool out there. I am going to try and get a slot because it is my favorite pool for the summer. As far as the staff goes, they are usually very friendly and helpful. 2x though I was like 🙃😑. Overall tilhis is still my favorite Y. The best one is in Grand Rapids Michigan! Look it up if you are there.
