We had my son's 8th birthday party at Inner Peaks in Matthews. The staff was GREAT! Everyone was helpful, professional, kind, and made sure that every kid had a great time. They were so encouraging of new kids learning how to climb, patient with them, and ensured everyone had plenty of time on the walls. They were great with set-up, clean-up, and during the event! 10/10 recommend!

Great climbing gym with some really fun routes (for a variety of skill levels). Just don't come on a Tuesday, unless you're bringing a kid or wanna deal with a bunch of kids. Every Tuesday, there's always a bunch of kids which take up pretty much all of the auto belays and a good 3rd of avaiable short walls. If you don't have a belaying partner, you will be hard pressed to find anything to climb.

I could not have had a better experience:
-Ian N.: I recommend him for all newcomers. I have only outside experience, he made me feel comfortable and heard! I got personal training where he worked with my previous knowledge to teach me more. THANK YOU IAN! <3

-Mrs. D'Vinity: Anyone greeted by her will know how she got her name. She made my reception comfortable and even gave me a BOMB! tip about my rope work in the end. I hope to see her again!!! <3 <3

Dig into this place. Solid Hidden Gem.

*EDIT* - I'm lowering this to one star, since the vaping is still so prominent at the gym. It's gotten to the point that I would rather go to the NoDa gym (25 minutes away) than the gym in Matthews (<5 Minutes) because the staff doesn't seem to care that people are vaping. I've mentioned it to staff members at least five times since I originally wrote this review, but it still happens almost every time I'm there. I've even seen at least a couple occasions of staff members vaping themselves in the back offices.

Pros: good setting of routes, the expanded space is nice, and the taller walls are a great addition.

Cons: the setting is a little soft (I know that’s just my opinion though). More so, there seems to be a pretty pervasive vaping issue in the gym. I’ve mentioned this to staff members a couple of times, but I’ve even seen off-duty staff members vaping near the bouldering areas. It sucks because vaping activates my asthma really badly, and I usually have to end my workouts early.

We have been several times on day passes and my son really got into climbing after attending one of their summer camps. We just celebrated his 8th birthday at the Matthews location. I highly recommend Inner Peaks Matthews for a birthday party experience. All the kids had a wonderful time and Katie and Jill, our party organizers, were absolutely fantastic. They truly made the whole experience so easy on me and I was able to be really present and enjoy my child's special day (I even got to climb too).

It was okay was a lot of just waiting for an auto spot because they do not have many spots. They should have some type of dress code as well. There's children in there and you have young male adults wearing no shirts with their underwear out and younger female adult wearing shorts that barely cover their bottoms with sports bras on. I understand people should feel comfortable but you can feel comfortable covering yourself too. The only reason I'm complaining about that is because one young ladies top slipped and u seen everything and with the men it was all butt cracks. The staff wasn't helpful either kept getting passed around employees because all of them kept saying they only did parties.

I came here Saturday to check it out even though I normally go to South End. I love that the Matthews location has more bouldering areas and auto belays than South End. My only complaint is the supervision of children on the floor. When I went there was a birthday party going on (I assume) and there were 6-8 kids on the auto belays that had no idea how to even clip on to their harness. They essentially hogged the auto belay wall for the 2 hours I was there, and there was only 1 adult I saw supervising. When I am having to answer questions for children and let them know how to clip their harnesses, that's a problem. There definitely needs to be more supervision for MULTIPLE reasons.

This was my first time at an Inner Peaks location and to say I'm unimpressed is an understatement. First off, the staff was condescending and rude from the get go. I asked for a lead belay test and the one giving the test, Tyler, acted like it was a complete bother that he had to step away from the desk for 15 minutes to do his job. After getting grilled about why my harness is on correctly, we were finally able to get on with the test. As someone who has worked at a climbing gym before, I understand that certain protocols have to be followed. However, the men in our group were not subject to such questioning. Apparently only women are dumb enough to put on their harnesses backwards?? (seriously, one of the women in my group got questioned about that). We then found out that the gym was closing early that night at 7pm for a staff party, which had not been posted on instagram and was still advertised as closing at 8pm as of last night. The only saving grace was the actually climbing itself. The routes were good and there were some fun boulder problems. However, I suppose we apparently didn't leave the building fast enough for the staffs liking. I overheard some of them talk about "sending a message" and sent one of their staff members to come stand by our group with his arms crossed like some half-baked bouncer as we are packing our gear, putting on jackets, etc. I almost wanted to ask if it was okay to wash my hands or if that was going to take too long for the staffers to attend their party. It was 7:05pm when we left... I understand the stresses of working at a climbing gym as I was an employee for Cliff Hangers for 5 years, but this was absolutely ridiculous. I don't think I will be returning to Inner Peaks anytime soon.

The setting for bouldering was very mediocre when I visited. Maybe the worst I have climbed in a year. What a difference from the South End. There were too many no-feet-no-problem climbing. I did not enjoy bouldering at all here. The setting at TRC Durham was way better. On the other hand, the routes were decent. Hand holds and foot holds were too similar and had to spend time looking for the hand holds. That took the fluidity from the climbing. Also auto belay options are soooo limited. Only on short walls??? stars for bouldering, 4 stars for routes. This gym has room to grow. I would stick with IP South End.

They got rid of a lot of auto belays. There’s only a total of 5 now in the entire gym, and 0 on the taller walls. If you don’t have someone to belay you, you’re better off going to South End.

They also allow people to vape apparently, it’s rampant here.

We went at the end of the day on a Sunday (trying to squeeze everything we could into my birthday), and everyone was welcoming and helpful despite it being the last hour of business. They were extremely patient and encouraging showing my boys the ropes (no pun intended) to get them oriented. Even as we left, at 2 minutes to close they were chatty and friendly. Good gang over there, and a really fun facility for the whole fam.

super bummed about the state of bouldering problems this morning. One wall was closed and the other had removed dozens of existing problems and replaced them with ten or so hard ungraded problems. As someone who has climbed around 5 years at other gyms and usually works V2-V4 problems, it's super disappointing to go to a gym with all that square footage and not a single problem to work on. I'm excited for new problems and am used to sections being closed for route setting, but it's poor planning to have periods where there's not a single route for beginners / early intermediate climbers.

Loved it! The bouldering area was sizable, with great route setting and a few nice wall features. I didn't spend too much time on the top-rope section, but it was fun. The top-rope walls were on the smaller size, but they are building some 55ft walls in the back as I type. Once again, the holds were fun and the route setting was very creative.

I absolutely love this gym. But I drive from Columbia. With the recent construction they’ve been absolutely terrible about posting when they’ll be closed. I’ve driven there on 3 separate occasions and they’ve been closed and had to drive 45 min to the other location. And then one time south end had a comp….

when asked about it, β€œoh check our instagram”. No. I’m not about that life. Why is it not on google or your website? Not everyone has social media and I shouldn’t have to actually search through 10 posts looking for an infographic when it absolutely should be posted on google AND your website.

Why didn’t you call? After the first time I did. Why don’t you ever answer your phone?

So yeah. Not happy with management. Great bouldering gym tho. Really awesome routes and setters…

At this point I should mention I’ve been to every climbing gym on the east coast and at least one in 44 individual states. I’ve been climbing a while, you can google me. This is literally the worst review I’ve left for a gym. Congratulations 🎊

Unfortunately it's just not really worth it anymore. Started going to Crown Point almost 4 years ago. Have loved it, but with the membership now being $84/m instead of the previous $69, and the hours being greatly reduced (only open 5p-10p on weekdays) the value just isn't there anymore. They have 2 great facilities, but $84 every month is a lot in this economy.

My daughter took a climbing class here. She was 'bouldering' and thereby not strapped into a harness. Unfortunately the instructors were not paying attention and she was climbing too high and fell.
She suffered a compression fracture in the accident, but thankfully is recovering.

I've been working with management of this company since this happened in March of 2022, in an effort to have their insurance provider cover a portion of the medical bills that have been piling up. Due to lack of response by the company and their insurance provider, these bills have now been sent to collection and I'm receiving harassing phone calls and letters as a result.

I would not recommend supporting a company that treats customers in this way.

I recently joined the climbing team here after a few trial trips and got a membership. I am now coming here almost twice a week to climb and exercise, and I gotta say this is a really fun place for kids and a good place to exercise for adults. (And kids can exercise too as long as they have an adult with them in the workout area) I am just amazed with how this place works really hard to make an awesome experience for all ages! Thanks for providing a nice experience and sport!

Honestly, I don't think I've been to a worse climbing gym, anytime I try and give them another shot I find at least 3 holds within my first hour that are loose or spinning on the wall. I'm led to believe that there is no smoking allowed in the building, but with the amount of chalk and poor air quality inside you would be surprised to know that fact, might as well be in the the roaring 1920s with how much smog there is in those buildings. The ropes are always poorly tired up, if at all, which can only make me wonder how much they clean the things you can't see if they leave the ropes in such a state. I've seen both wall panels and cushioned floor panels loose, wobbly, or barely attached to anything, which does not embody a safe environment to climbers.
Overall, I would say inner peaks is perfectly maintained if you think climbing in the monkey enclosure from a long since abandoned zoo is ideal.

I have been involved in the climbing community for 20 years and I have never been more disappointed than my experience at Inner Peaks in Mathews, as a Father. My son is 3 and expressed an interest in a sport that I love. I was stoked to take him to the gym for the first time and watch him play.
My first shock was the day price of $20 for a 3 year old, the same price as an adult. Ok, I am here and I will pay it because that is easier than telling my son, I am sorry this price is not appropriate.
My second disappoint came from the difficulty in the routes set. My son is timid and did not want to climb on the ropes, so he went towards the boulder wall. There weren't any jug ladders, or any age-appropriate climbs at all set on the boulder wall. My son's feet never left the ground because every route was set for adults. I tried to make the most of it and spent 10 mins counting start holds and pointing at colors before I realized we are not getting the product that we paid for.
Third disappointment was Beth, the employee I spoke to about the difficulty of the walls. Beth was apathetic to the point of being rude. She told me that they had a climbing competition two weeks ago so the routes are harder than usual. Two weeks is more than enough time for setters to make the walls family friendly and inclusive. She said that my son could "just go to the ropes section." When I told her that my son was too timid for the ropes and wanted to boulder, she told me that I could drive to Inner Peaks South End, 30mins away, "because it may be a little more kid friendly." When I asked for a refund because my son was not able to climbing anything, she then told me that I "was more than welcome to have looked around the gym before I paid to see if it was kid friendly;" but they would not give refunds. The climbing community prides itself on inclusivity and Inner Peaks Mathews blatantly discriminated against my timid child by telling me "just go to the ropes section" and to "go to our other location;" how does that represent what the climbing community should be?

I went there to get a day pass for my son and ended up getting a membership and .......I ended up getting membership for myself after hardly a week going there with my son. They have a family discount if an additional member of the family wanted to join. The facility is so clean with free classes, gym and awesome climbing walls. I'm new to climbing, but i do enjoy my time here trying out things with my son. The best part of this facility is the staff.. Glad to see inner peaks expanding, but their new pricing model is extremely inflexible and price gouging at minimum. I have been climbing for 20 yrs and have never seen such bad membership/punch card options. I have 5 yr old daughter who I am just trying to get into climbing which means she can only climb a couple climbs before she gets burned out. Inner peaks offers no young kids pricing punch card system and membership is $69/mo. Which means if I take here once a week, I am not getting out of there for less than $17 with the best offer. Further with ZERO traffic both gyms are >20 min away. Which means I am driving 1 hr for 20-30 min of a climber. Their pricing model is designed to only benefit climbers who can go atleast 2 times a week and live nearby. Inner peaks, seems to be focused on heavily used, continued membership but pays no mind to transitioning/new climbers, people who have busy lives or people who don't live right next door.

For new climbers, this is a great experience.
The auto-belay devices allow you to approach climbing 100% at your own pace, without having to call on a trained belayer to support you.
The climbing tracks have a range of difficulties, allowing your skills to take a slow and steady climb (ha) as you improve.
The staff are really nice and enthusiastic, and LGBT friendly. 😊
The environment around the evening is half kids, half climber parents / kid-less adults. Not too intrusive at all.

Nice facility, perfect for families.

This location, as opposed to South End, feels more intimate inside. For families, kids, beginners, I think this place is better suited than South End. South End can seem big and intimidating. It's a really quality climbing gym. I find one thing that is a challenge for some gyms is creating climbs that are both challenging for tall an short climbers. Often times creating a hard climb means simply making it far away. Inner peaks does a great job of balancing climbs so both short and all people can enjoy the same route.

Definitely worth a visit. (Long detailed review below)

Two awesome bouldering caves, some good slabs, and even a comp wall. Not quite as much wall space as South End, but very unique problems. The bouldering walls are slightly higher than South End.

Top rope is decent but not on par with South End. The walls are shorter than the walls at South End, about as tall as they were at the Crownpointe location. Lead is almost non-existant. This will change once the expansion is completed (no word on when that will be, at least they haven't told me πŸ˜‰ ).

Sweet loft area with campus and tension boards. The loft has a nice view of the bouldering area.

Yoga studio and workout room on par with South End. Dumbbells, barbells, squat rack, benches, medicine balls, pull-up bars, dip bars, treadmill, bicycle machine thing. No rings or finger boards that I have seen.

Extra:

The good - There are parking spots available! Much more parking than South End has!

Also good - The bouldering comp wall is very unique (as of this writing).

Also good - Seems to be less crowded than South End, even on opening week.

The bad - The bouldering mats are honestly... Pretty awful... Downclimb or risk bussing a knee. Hopefully they will sure over time (?) or add mats that are actually soft on top.

Also bad - If you're mainly a rope climber, it's still worth a visit, but you'll probably want to stick to South End.

The new location is a clear upgrade from the old crown point location. Plenty of parking outside. The inside seems to be designed for bouldering mostly, but there are some vertical walls and auto belays as well. The south end location is clearly the place to go for rope climbing though. The weight gym and training area are very nice as well.

This is a pretty cool place. This is smaller of their two facilities in Charlotte though they do have a nice selection of walls and bouldering problems.

You can rent gear or take your own. They have a small pro-shop inside with some quality gear available. The staff are friendly and polite enough, though not overly welcoming. Tons of parking outside.

Their policies on climbing/lessons are pretty frustrating. We are experienced outdoor sport and trad climbers yet unable to practice in their gym because of age limitations on their sport/lead lessons --pretty disappointing. Because of this, we skip their gym and just head out to a crag instead. They'd certainly get more business from us if we were able to practice in their gym.

I hate giving two stars when a location deserves more, but the two stars for simply because of their ridiculous policies.

Absolutely love this place. My daughter absolutely loves partaking in the mental and physical challenges. I suggest taking a quick trip to either location and have a blast.

Did a rock climbing event for daughter's birthday. Girls had a blast (11 and 12 year-olds). Luke, Emma, and Molly did an excellent job at hoisting the girls to the top. Highly recommend giving it a try!!

Visited for the holiday with family. This was a great family trip with a range from age 9 to 40's! The staff was great about tutorials and help with anything. The walls offered a very wide range of difficulty as well!

Awesome climbing experience. Are used to work at a climbing wall so I know how difficult staff in a place like this can be. But the staff is very knowledgeable, very friendly, and very approachable. They offer a great variety of difficulties for all climbing abilities. The facilities are well-maintained and the holes are very well-maintained. Made me feel very comfortable climbing her e.

This place sucks pretty hard. The walls are not tall. The grading is inconsistent. The rocks regularly wiggle. The "gym" is completely inadequate. THERE IS NO SHOWER. The yoga schedule is a joke. They gave us a STATIC rope to lead with. Guys, you need to sink a lot of money into this place if you expect people to come here.

I have a membership there and the staff and the owner are super helpful. It has lead me to bring a bunch of my friends and first time climbers. The routes are usually well set and between both gyms you will never run out of things to do.

Fantastic facilities and knowledgable staff.

I've been to this location multiple times with my family and always had a great time.
Most recently, my son had his 13th b-day party here. The staff was very welcoming and fun. The boys had a great time climbing.
Would definitely recommend for anyone interested in getting into climbing or advanced climbers.
You can be a first time climber and really enjoy yourself.
Very supportive and helpful staff.

They definitely cater towards younger and inexperienced climbers. More than half the wall space is easy slab set with seven-year-olds in mind. I caught a father "belaying" his young son by just holding on the the rope and had to lower the climber for him.
The cave has a good selection of routes ranging from 5.9 to 5.11c or so. It seems like there is a fair amount of route turnover as well.

I've been going to Inner Peaks for about a year now. The staffs are super friendly and know you by name. The routes gets changed every few weeks to keep things fresh. It's overall a really good place to climb, hangout and make new friends. Complimentary beginner classes are offered to get you started and a good place to find climbing partners.

Every once and awhile you'll see Page, the owner, climb and she's really fun to talk to.

Took my 4 year old daughter here on a miserable rainy day after showing her their website (where it claimed kids of all ages were welcome with an adult). After driving 40 minutes, was told that their harnesses are for ages 5 or over.

Everyone here is incredible. Fritz, Shawn and Nate were always extremely friendly and helpful. For someone just getting into climbing this was a great place to go to really get hooked. The walls aren't very high but they really do work hard to make super fun routes (<3 Shawn's routes) that totally make up for it. I would go here forever if I hadn't had to move to another state. The gym by me is much bigger with higher walls but I'd choose IP over it any day just because the staff makes it such an awesome place to go.

I'm a climbing newb. I've only been here twice. I'm really enjoying rock climbing and most likely will sign up as a full time member. The facility is nice, and people who work there walk around and gave me tips while I was attempting to boulder. It really helped. I'd recommend it.
