The service from the front ladies are so bad I wanted to cry me a 15 year old was told that I was not allowed to go inside the ymca with money I purposely brought to train for my upcoming competition for volleyball I was so disappointed and they told me random stuff and when I brought my parent they mixed there words up and I got so mad and I still wasn’t able in the ymca if I could I would give it 0 starts…

I don’t usually write reviews, but I felt like I needed to after today. We went to another YMCA (not our usual one) for my niece’s birthday party, and at first I was really impressed. The building itself is super nice, very clean, and honestly I even thought, hey, maybe we could get a membership here later on.

When the lifeguards came in to explain the rules and wristbands for swimming, they were friendly and professional. But unfortunately, that’s kind of where the good impressions stopped. Once we got to the pool, most of the staff working there were younger (which is fine), but they didn’t seem to know how to interact with people very well. My younger sister even noticed a few of them rolling their eyes at us when we weren’t doing anything wrong, which just came across as rude.

My husband was standing with our son on the ramp that goes into the pool, and a staff member told him, “Can you please get off the ramp?” Which was fine—we moved right away. But there was no explanation given. I didn’t know what the ramp was for—maybe it’s specifically for people who need accessibility support, I’m not sure—but since no one else was using it at the time, it just felt like it could have been explained a little better. A simple, “Hey, that ramp needs to stay clear for accessibility reasons,” would have gone a long way.

The locker room situation was also uncomfortable. I had changed myself and my son in there earlier with no issue. But after swimming, when we went back to change out of our wet clothes, an older staff member sat waiting on me to come out of the restroom and then told me kids aren’t allowed in there. I honestly didn’t notice any signs (and there might have been one, but I didn’t see it). Nobody mentioned that rule beforehand either, which made the whole interaction feel awkward, like I was being caught doing something wrong that I didn’t even know about. Also, my son is only two. I was trying to get changed and get out.

Overall, the facilities are great, but the staff really need better training on communication and how to work with the public. Even though I’m young, I’m well-educated and work with the public every day, so I know firsthand how much tone and explanation matter. With some staff training and improvements in how they interact with guests, this YMCA could really stand out. But based on today’s experience, I personally wouldn’t be back.

The YMCA is insane expensive for a family. They wanted $86/mo for a family. The facility itself is nice and there's plenty to do, but if you just need a gym, best to look elsewhere unless you've just got money to burn.

I’m not one to write negative reviews, but this weighed on my heart. There are some very kind staff members, but overall, the team would benefit from better customer service training. The atmosphere often feels tense, and even small mistakes are handled in a way that feels unnecessarily harsh.

For example, I accidentally took my toddler boys into the women’s dressing room to quickly change them. Several older ladies rudely told me to use the family dressing room, fair enough, but then they complained to staff, and I was reprimanded in front of another member. Two women approached me; the one who spoke tried to smooth things over, but it still came across as, “No, no, you can’t do that,” while the second woman just stood silently. It was uncomfortable and could have been handled far more kindly.

That same day, a custodial staff member opened the curtain on myself and others while we were changing. That seems like a bigger concern if we’re addressing rules. Additionally, I left something in the pool area and wasn’t allowed to retrieve it because summer camp was present. While I understand rules and safety, the approach felt overly rigid.

The front office, as the first point of contact for members, could also be much more welcoming. Small moments like these add up, and I often leave feeling tense and stressed. We enjoy having a local option for our family, but I truly hope the staff works on creating a friendlier, more approachable environment.

So, I have not had an issue per se until now. I went into the branch last week to enroll my daughter in Camp. Upon entering and telling the front staff I was having issues. The lady in front was very lazy!!!!!! Not helpful at all! Then a pleasant guy came to the rescue and just guided me through the enrollment process..... When I looked over as the Guy was assisting me I see that the female who clearly didn't want to assist me (and this is my feelings and my perception of the situation) she is helping another coworker with another customer/member who does not look like me at that. and got out her seat to do it! I am thankful to the Guy who did assist me.

So now today, I am in day 2 of my daughter's day camp and she goes with her bento box. I ask about it! My daughter said she left it on the table. The worker said she couldn't find it! Then blamed my daughter for putting it in another kids back pack! I know things happen but, when it comes to a parent inquiring about a kids belongings don't do child blaming! Do Not go back and forth and try to justify the Negligence! I asked my child, and after speaking with her, she is understandably upset and confused, as she does not recall placing her lunchbox in anyone else's bag. I will listen to my kid before I have someone else blame her........ Then wrote back with no ettiquette using an exclamation. Which shows the receiver that you are unprofessional....
As parents, we want to support the school/camp in promoting responsibility and accountability, but we also want to ensure that misunderstandings are handled fairly and respectfully. I’d appreciate a meeting or phone call at your earliest convenience to discuss this further.

I like this Y, but I started going elsewhere because the weight room has people who do a set on the machines and just sit there for too long before doing their second set. I guess that is what happens at a popular Y. The warking track is great, the hot tub was the best.

I think this branch is pretty good. Most of the staff are very friendly and helpful and the exercise areas are kept spotless. Lots to do from pickleball to the machine/weight room to the pool; two walking tracks upstairs and many classes. The machine/weight room is pretty small and can get very busy where you have to wait.

Took my boys there on a Saturday. One to swim on his own and my younger one for me to train on swimming in between swim practices. While this sounds like no big deal, it becomes one when you have an over-zealpus lifeguard constantly telling me what I can't do. Prior to getting in the water, he and I had a very clear conversation on what I would be doing and he was cool about it. Either short term memory or his water authority got to his head. Left early since teaching my son how to swim (safely) is a problem at this location. Will not return.

I generally work out at the Y in King, but will occasionally come here instead. This is a far more modern version. There are two pools (both are deeper than the one in King), and the hot tub is bigger and better. They also have two full indoor tracks instead of just one, and treadmills with a 30 percent incline--great for mountain climbers like myself. If only there were a facility this good in King or closer...Highly recommended!

I recently canceled my membership with YMCA because there were things I didn't like. This morning I went to the playground with my baby and I really feel bad seeing how these women treat the children. They are so rude to them. More than ever, I feel good about not spending my money in this place. The boy in the yellow shirt in the photo was crying because he got stuck on the railing and instead of pampering him, they scolded him and the other woman was only worried about her own son and her phone. SHAME!!!!

Current member, I love the ymca and everything there. I have the family membership so my kids can enjoy the ymca as well. I only have one complaint.

The family locker rooms are not big enough and it’s not fair that you’re basically forced to use such a small area FOR A FAMILY. I am a mother of two small children, one being a boy and one being a girl. So we go to the girls locker room, but it is soooo small it’s only big enough for one family at a time. There’s only one bench right in front of the sinks and stalls. It’s not fair that my son has to change in front of girls, because he’s not old enough to change by himself, he’s 4. There’s no changing stalls at all unless you squeeze into the bathroom stalls which again with two children isn’t possible. The family bathroom has no benches in them either and on the weekends when mostly all families go to ymca they’re always filled up. The family locker rooms should be for the ones that are older and don’t have kids and the bigger locker rooms should be for the families because it is bigger and also has private changing areas as well. It’s more space to be able to change myself plus my children without bring on top of another family or other little girls looking at my son being changed, which makes him uncomfortable. or having to wait 15 min or more for the family restrooms. If families are paying thd sane price as everyone else then we should have a bigger place to be able to change in comfort just like the ones that do not have children. why make it harder on families when its just yourself? make them use the tiny space. that makes more sense to me, why do they need all the room if its only one person. families need more room especially when you have multiple families coming in and out. MAKE IT FAIR FOR ALL! I had a worker come up to me saying I need to use the smaller locker rooms today when they clearly saw how many kids I had and that I waited over 15 mins to change just to let my kids swim. So I used the bigger locker rooms. Very rude and very disappointing.

Hoping this review might help others considering whether or not to enroll your child in swim lessons. We did the level 1 and 2 as my daughter has little water experience (she’s 4). Second lesson was canceled 10 minutes before it started because a kid had an accident in the pool. They did a make up day but it was on a Friday which wasn’t very convenient (but that’s listed on their website so understandable). The biggest issue I had was our instructor was frequently distracted and more focused on talking to the lifeguards than actually doing the lesson. I watched her in the short 30 minute lesson talk to other staff for at least 10 minutes every session. All the staff (including lifeguards) were more concerned about getting their holiday snacks in the break room. Also my daughter was unfortunately hospitalized and missed 2 of the 6 lessons. I knew they had a strict make up policy but I emailed the swim director to see if there were any options. I got ZERO response. Not a yes or no. Thought that was incredibly unprofessional Lucia. The shining light was the last instructor we had for our makeup day (wish I could remember her name) was very good and engaged with my daughter and the other kids. And the lessons primarily consisted of blowing bubbles, jumping up and down in water, floating and swimming on a pool noodle. I could have done that myself with her. Kicker is they recommended she repeat level 1. No thank you!

We recently ran the “dirty dozen” 5k mud run hosted by the YMCA. We have done mud runs before and having hose off areas or showers is quite basic and standard. My wife and I ran the race and it was around $50 each ($100 total). They had one firehose (and one garden hose over by a pavilion on the other end of the parking lot)…. They stated there were over 500 runners present. The lack of places to clean off after a MUD RUN is insane. If each runner spent just 30 seconds hosing off with the fire hose, it would take OVER FOUR HOURS to hose everybody off after the run. Honestly the race itself was run just fine, but overlooking shower or cleaning setups for a mud run is flat-out idiotic planning. The YMCA refused to allow runners (unless they were members) to come in and use the showers even though we had paid a considerable amount of money for the race…

The real kicker here is that there was an INCREDIBLY simple solution…. For the folks who ran the race (keep in mind that each paid $50 to run), the YMCA could have simply let the runners use the facility for the day. Not only would this let folks shower off without the YMCA having to bring in shower setups, but it also would be like a free one day pass to potentially explore the YMCA and plant the idea of maybe joining. Instead, they decided to poorly execute one of the most blindingly obvious necessities for a mud run and piss off a bunch of people who COULD have become potential customers. Genius.

Odd decision making by management. The afterschool care switched things around recently. They have the “ Rowdy kids” as they, switch up front to the littles area with windows, art work, lots of activities not to mention it being the room next to the toddler/baby room. Then they put the Elementary kids down the hall in a separate room with zero windows, nothing on the walls selection of activities is like pencils and paper and a teenager in the room with them. Pretty much a storage room. When asking why it’s because “ they need to keep their eyes on them up front“ Well maybe go out back instead of punishing the little kids? Makes zero sense.

Then went there swimming recently. They had the slide closed even though it was roped off from the swim lessons. When politely asking if my son could use it. He stated no they are closed. Ok, I understand. Then the swim lesson kids went down it repeatedly next to us. I looked over at that same lifeguard and he said,” Is your son taking swimming lessons today? Then no you can’t use the slide.” I was kinda shocked to hear that.

Now after saying all of that some of the management has been amazing during the after school program beginning. People I have spoke to have been great and very friendly. The people at the front desk always have a smile and super nice as well. Just a few odd management decision making recently that may cost them members. (As I see in other reviews)

My favorite YMCA in the city. It has an indoor swim pool for families and for serious swimmers. Coaches to teach both group and personal classes. Jacuzzi. Sauna separate for men and women. Plenty of showers and changing cubicles. Gym with plenty of equipment in more than one location.
Daycare for toddlers and kids Up to 11 for a few hours while gyming.
Preschool. Day-care after school.
Club for teens.
Soccer, basketball.
Group classes : yoga, Pilates, les mills etc etc
..
My only problem: they don't have any classes for children below 12 yrs (without paying extra). Except swimming pool.

This is my elected Ymca, I have been coming here for a long time. Today I read a new tendency going around consisting of using children to steal and reminded me of the last time I visited here. A woman on her 60s wearing a black swimsuit acting very rudely instructed her granddaughter who was dressed like a mermaid twice to go through my things. At first sight they looked like classy people but beware because looks don t count nowadays.

Great pool area!!! However is definitely lacking seating/tables for kids and adults when they take a break from swimming. Also, the youth restroom is accessible to kids under 18, but when they are very young they have to be accompanied by an adult in the kids lockeroom. I wish as an adult we were able to use the women’s facility with 3 small children.

If I had a 17 year old, they could dress them selves, no biggie, but with babies and toddlers, I wish we could use the huge nice women’s locker room facility vs using the small youth locker room.

Very friendly atmosphere.
Youth Sports are great.

I had to cancel my membership because they were not friendly to my children from the beginning. I sent my child to summer camp just to get him used to being around children. But the staff was impatient and refused to let him go after only ten days. There was no communication during this period. I was just asked to sign a piece of paper saying that he could no longer go. Well, he can't go anymore, so why do you continue to deduct our fees from the bank? After contacting them, they said they would give us credit. We will never go back. I am not the first to say that the attitude here is bad. You can read the previous comments. . If I hadn't moved, I wouldn't have come to this location. Other Y's are much better than here. My kids have had great summers at other Y's before.

I used to love this Y. They have the best pool in Winston for kids. Zero entry, warm, more room to swim than any of the other Y’s I’ve seen. The nursery staff was also really sweet and knew my child by name. My kids loved going, even my 1 year old! I taught both of my oldest children, who are under 6, how to swim last year. The lifeguards were always so nice and supportive last year. It’s changed a lot. Now they’ve made the swimming rules much stricter, and will repeatedly come over to you and make sure you’re in an arms reach of your child, or else they can’t be in the pool or have to wear a life jacket (thus wouldn’t learn to swim). You still have to be in the pool even if they have a life jacket on. They also put signs on EVERYTHING and basically say kids can’t use kick boards or any other items they have out. Additionally, the slides (which are a big attraction) are almost always “closed”. Even if a water class doesn’t start for 30 minutes and no one else is in the pool the lifeguards will say “it’s closed because there’s classes this morning”. I’m grateful I was able to take my kids swimming a LOT last year and use my own parenting judgments and thus help them learn how to swim. I’ve cancelled my membership.

The after school program is too large for the staff to properly handle. They have no methods of disciplinary action so they’ll just write up your child and send them home. They will then make you out to be the bad person. They will make you think that they are in this journey with you but really they have no patience for the kids that need a little extra attention. Gratefully we found a place to go to- we’ve had NO problems. It’s clear after leaving and observing over the time we’ve been gone that it was in fact the staff of the ymca that failed. I’m sure if they had more help, or at least instructors that keep their word and partnered with parents as they claim too, the care would be much better. Unfortunately this is not the case and they will give up very quickly. Time has proven this to be true. Very unfortunate. At least the boss will refund your money, I guess they have that going for them. Hire more staff, your current staff is overloaded. You can’t tell parents that everything will be okay and you’ll help them get to the bottom of problems, but waste our $270/month by sending them home back to back. They could’ve had him clean while the others played, they could’ve had him in time out for the duration of the stay they could even make up class work for him to do, but it was easier to send him home. I’m 5’2 and was on crutches when I discussed the issues last, just to be told that I “ambushed” the much larger woman. No accountability on their end. I’ve given it time and this is the truth that stands. HIRE-MORE-STAFF (the highschool kids or “counselors”don’t count) OR DON’T accept more children.

It's really a great facility, however several regular members that use the workout room are the reason why I can't give it 5 stars. They treat the equipment as park benches to chat. Get off the machines and stand somewhere to talk so the rest of us can finish our workouts. Also there are several lugs that monopolize one machine for an hour Guess they don't think the rules apply to them.

Weight machines are almost great. Wish there was greater emphasis on getting members to wipe down the machines when done! Walking track is great, and soft. Lot of rowdy teens playing backetball sometimes makes the ball go up on the track. A wonder someone has not been hurt. Hot tub is great. Jets provide great pressure. Shower stalls are GREAT, roomy, great pressure. I see they are building a new poo area. Hope there are more lockers.....DREAM ON I GUESS.

I really like this ymca. Unfortunately, I am looking at canceling my membership. The main reason I come here is for Silver Sneakers Yoga. Since joining in August it's impossible to get into any of the 3 classes offered during the week. I used to be able to get here at 10:30 and get a ticket for the class, which holds 75 people. As of late you have to be here by 10 am to have a place in the line for the tickets to be handed out at 10:30. If you arrive at 10:30, you're at the end of the line and possibly will not get a ticket, after waiting in line. This class was my top reason for joining and I don't participate in other classes, I walk the track which is something I can do outside. I was hoping they'd realize the size of these classes and either add an additional class per day or add classes on Tuesday and Thursday. I find that having to get here at 10am to stand in line is a waste of time. The gym offers many other good things but the senior yoga class really needs to be looked at and changes made to be accessible to all the patrons.

I love this YMCA. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is so very comfortable and they have a wide variety of machines/equipment to use plus multiples of all machines/equipment. I just love it!

They need to turn the air down in the weight room so people can get a good sweat. This is the only major problem

Today's experience was very poor, the open swim area was taken by private swim classes when the schedule says there was an open swim in lanes 1&2. One of the family rooms flooded because the drain in the shower was not draining, and couldn't finish my shower.

The best YMCA location in the Triad, but please don't tell anyone. The facilities are top notch. More classes available than you can do. Great pool, and the best locker room anywhere.

The staff (at least everyone that I've met) is affable, genuine, and helpful. If a staff member didn't know the answer to a question, she did not hesitate to ask for help so that she may learn as well. That meant a great deal to me.

Called to cancel membership after originally pausing. I did call on third day of month and technically needed to do so by last day of previous month. When I called the attendant said sorry nothing they can do to reverse charge and I would have access to facility for the balance of the month. I did explain that I was physically unable to take advantage of facility and would appreciate a credit. Again she stated they would not do, now that is true lack of customer service. Won't be going back.

About 50% of the employees you speak to will have a really bad attitude. I mean I can't blame them since the ones with attitudes are middle aged adults that make terrible income. The main ones that are terrible are the big lady with glasses and curly hair at the sign in desk, and a mildly built personal trainer with a lot of arm tats(worst of them all, probably makes the least as well) other than the employees this YMCA is pretty good

Took a tour and joined immediately after seeing pool area ! I have a bad back injury and chose swimming to help me lose weight, it's thee best choice I've ever made. Life Guard's help me pick which exercise would aid me and we're 100% spot on, knowledgeable & friendly. I enjoy every visit and really get a good workout everyday and really FEEL it ! I get a great work out, meet cool new people, AND get a free cup of coffee to take with me ! Put down that bag of chips, get of your couch and join...and look for a guy with camo swim trunks in the pool (me!) Great, friendly atmosphere with activities for ALL ages, I see 4-5 year old kids and 80 year old adults all enjoying themselves. JUST JOIN !

Absolute pros and cons: The facility is nice. It's clean, busy and generally friendly. There are many options for all ages from very young to elderly, which makes for a crowded place, particularly at certain times of day (weekends and around the holidays).

They make efforts to improve, but at times that is slow and frustrating. For example, you see empty, non-working gym equipment and there is a wait to use what is operable. If you're there long enough, observant and creative, you can find spaces to do your own thing if you don't take advantage of the variety of classes, but you can always opt pay extra for a personal training to utilize the half gym and the equipment dedicated for that purpose.

Adult locker rooms finally have new, private changing areas (at least in the women's), but beware of the icy, frigid water you'll wash hands in when you are finally able to stand just right to get the auto-water to flow from the faucets. We've had a family membership for many years. It is not cheap, so we have sought alternatives and know of others, especially couples sans young children who have left.

Staff and programs are excellent. Whether you're single, couple, family, or senior you will find a fitness activity here. There is a problem created by being so popular in the community - access to fitness equipment, pool, and space can be limited because of overcrowding. This is a busy, busy place so timing your routine is important to get the access you want. They have expanded and re-engineered space several times to improve utilization but continued growth in numbers mean the access problem remains. Again, this can be overcome with a well planned routine to avoid peak times.

An amazing place. Being a member here is the best investment you can make.
It has a workout room, soccer field, 3 basketball courts, 2 indoor tracks, an outdoor track, daycare, yoga/workout classes, a swimming pool, hot tub, sauna, steam room and two racquetball quarts. I'm sure I'm leaving something out.

For kids, it offers soccer, basketball, baseball, swimming lessons, swim team, flag football, lockins summer camps and daycare. My friends and I always come here to hang out and play pickup basketball. Also, I run here almost every day.
For adults, there are all sorts of programs, from weight loss support, to yoga, to advanced weight training and senior citizen fitness classes.
The point is, if you live in the area, this is the best investment you can make!!!

Awesome. Clean. Great staff. Excellent equipment. If you work out in the morning, though - bring your MP3 player... they play music from the 50's. Good music, but not for exercise... trying to bench press to "Yakity Yak" is not ideal for me.
