I had my first class at Sudio 8 and was very impressed. I have been to other studios that have bigger classes, less personalized instruction. I felt very comfortable and loved the attention to my form and issues I face with my neck. Julie was very detailed in her instructions and the benefits of each exercise. She is extremely knowledgable about pilates techniques for all shapes, sizes and ages of people. It was also fun and very personable.

Studio 8 is the best! Classes are small and intimate so you get lots of individual attention. The instructors are so helpful and friendly—making sure your form is correct and finding ways to accommodate tricky knees, achy backs or other issues. Whether you’re new to Pilates or an experienced practitioner, there’s a class designed for your level. It’s fun and really helps me keep in shape.

Pilates at Studio 8 is truly a gem. The instructors are fantastic—especially Julie, the owner, who is not only incredibly knowledgeable but also genuinely caring and attentive. Everyone there is friendly, accommodating, and takes the time to listen to your needs, which makes each session feel personalized and effective.

The studio itself is always clean, well-maintained, and thoughtfully laid out. The equipment is in great condition, and the space is comfortable with good ventilation and air conditioning—something I really appreciate during workouts.

Highly recommend!

I love this studio so much because the instructors are always so genuine, observant, and love what they do. Monica has helped me advance so much throughout the last year and I feel stronger and stronger. I also recently tried the jump board class with Leah and that is my favorite way to end the week!

Good classes and very friendly community. Classes are small no more than 8, so you get lots of individual attention. There are a variety of classes, that are always available. Conveniently located with lots of parking.

I started Pilates a few years ago. After the pandemic I returned to Studio 8 and started taking classes with Penelope Barrow. Penelope is one of the best teachers I have had. Penelope is helping me improve my form and always takes time to explain a movement or exercise, why the form is important and how it should feel. As I look back over the years- the best teachers I have had have always been the hardest. I appreciate when Penelope pushes me as I know it’s in my best interest. I have also enjoyed private sessions and classes with those who have trained/are training under Penelope. The consistency from class to class and session to session is helpful for me. Judy and Laura are excellent!

As an older woman with double hip replacements, this studio, and Penelope in particular, were recommended to me to help rebuild strength and mobility. Over the last year I have found community, camaraderie, and physical confidence thanks to Penelope’s guidance and the community of the over 60 class. Everything about Penelope’s teaching has exceeded my expectations and I’m so grateful for her work keeping me healthy no strong despite challenges.

My husband and I started Pilates for the very first time ~18 months ago. Not a class goes by that we don’t note how lucky we are to have fallen into classes with instructor Penelope Barrow.

Penelope is incredibly intelligent and highly trained. Her understanding of anatomy and physiology as well as her years of performing professional ballet and doing Pilates leave her uniquely tuned to the needs of the human body. At the beginning of every class, Penelope always asks her students what body parts are bothering them, then incorporates exercises into that class to address those needs. As a result, every class is different, and Pilates never becomes boring.

Penelope always has the best interests of her students in mind, working hard to ensure each of us does each exercise with proper form to prevent injury and produce maximum benefit. With professionalism and good humor, she regularly critiques each of us – both verbally and with hands-on physical correction – when our movements are incorrect. Penelope knows her students’ limits, taking a brisk pace and encouraging us to give our best effort, yet pulling back when it’s clear we’ve maxed out that effort. Class is very satisfying because she works us hard. Talk about bang for your buck!

On several occasions, I have had the opportunity to take classes with other instructors at different studios. Without exception, not a single teacher could hold a flame to Penelope with regard to expertise and the ability to convey key detailed instructions to make various exercises safe and effective to do. Since starting Pilates with Penelope, my core and overall strength, as well as my balance, have increased dramatically! I’m thrilled!

Kudos to Pilates at Studio 8 for having a true master Pilates instructor – Penelope Barrow – on staff!

I’ve been taking Pilates classes with Penelope for 2 years now. Had done mat classes for years prior to this but never been on a reformer. Started with her in the beginner class and have now moved into intermediate under her guidance. She pays attention to every detail to make sure we will get the most out of our time in class and gives modifications to prevent injuries.
I had a hip replacement 5 years ago and she is constantly aware of movements that might bother me and are not in my best interest. Her knowledge of anatomy and health if you have issues is extraordinary.
If you want to be challenged while learning from an experienced, high level instructor try her classes!

My Pilates class with instructor Penelope this morning left me feeling discouraged. She made me feel humiliated and uncomfortable in her class. She singled me out several times in front of everyone, implying I was “in the wrong class” because I wasn't going at her pace. Her arrogant attitude was not what I expected, especially since I made an effort to be there and signed up to have a relaxing and positive experience/environment. Unfortunately, the experience left me feeling disheartened.
This confirms what others had warned me about this instructor in particular.
While I understand the importance of proper form to avoid injury, her tone was critical, unnecessary and made me feel singled out in front of everyone else.

There are certainly better ways that a good instructor can use to address a student who might need modifications. I could have been offered modifications or given individual guidance without making rude comments.
I don’t think I was in the wrong class, but certainly with the wrong staff.
I left the class 10 minutes after it started, feeling defeated rather than motivated. I regret purchasing a 10-class package. If you're looking for a friendly Pilates class with a welcoming atmosphere, this instructor is not what you deserve. Nothing justifies the rude treatment I got today.

I came to visit Chapel Hill for six weeks and took intermediate classes mostly with Penelope Barrow. She is an extraordinary teacher with perfect attention to the details and she challanged us as she should. I have learned a lot and I recommend the classes to anyone who want to attempt another level. Join and enjoy!

I purchased a pack of class credits for one specific class I was interested in prior to the pandemic. This class is not returning now that the studio has reopened. I requested to have my money returned for the credits I did not use but the owner refuses to refund unused credits even though this class is no longer returning because the number of people she would have to refund if they requested it, she feels, is too inconvenient and too much money to have to refund. She should be taking better care of those who have patronized her business in the past if she hopes to continue to have repeat business. I will not be returning here for any classes, nor will I recommend this unfair business to anyone.
