Incompetent and unproffesional! I won a 1 year Planet Fitness in Chapel Hill membership last year at the UNC day competition. When i went in to activate it, they said they need my banking details for records purposes but promised that no funds will go through because i won the free membership. Well, for 3 months they deducted $25 per month from my account without my permission. I came in to rectify it, but was told "the manager is not in" I left my nr but nobody called me back. After another payment when through i changed my banking details to stop the payments from going through. For the past 6 months Planet Fitness Debt Collector has been harassing me, everyday to make my payments. Sometimes they call me 3 times a day for money! They actually gave me over to their debt collectors!! My credit profile has been affected by this nonsence! The daily calls have been driving me nuts. Today was the 4th time i went into the branch, proof of free membership awarded to me in hand, and was told, as usual, "the manager is not in" What was however different today, the arogant person at the desk told me NOT to leave my nr. Because she can assure me that they will not call me back. Told me to come back another day. AGAIN! I regret ever winning the so called free 1 year memberdhip. This place is a joke and I WANT THEIR DEBT COLLECTORS TO STOP HARASSING ME!!!!!! I have the email proof but they are just ghosting me! Need a laywer to assist me in getting them to take me off ther debt collection list because all my attemts to talk to their manager face to face and sort it out, has been futile.

I am a new member here. I am attempting to update my billing information over the phone but the young boy has made it insanely difficult. I was put on hold three times for whatever reason. I also repeated the reason for my call three times. I repeated my name and slowly spelled it out twice and he still can’t manage to get it right. I will have to handle the issue in person so I can see what and why a simple task has been so difficult to handle.

Daily regular user for the past 6 months. Staff are friendly and welcoming. Place is usually relatively clean and atmosphere is always positive, although it can get busy at times. Only gripe is that the machines are older and some require regular maintenance.i.e. stairmaster. Many of the cycling trainers definitely need some repairs as the cranks make clicking sounds or rotate misaligned. Wish they the fancy peloton ones as the Durham location.

It's a typical Planet Fitness. Machines usually get fixed pretty quickly here, but there is no place to put your drink around any of the weight machines. Most places at least have some cup holders near the lifting machines, but not here. Otherwise, it's pretty clean, but frequently too crowded.

I have been a Black Card member since 2017 and the Chapel Hill facility is my home base, if you will. The last several months I have visited other PF gyms throughout the Southeast...and the consistency is impressive. But, as Dorothy once chimed. "there's no place like home". Chapel Hill has a sparkling clean facility (even pre-Covid) and friendly and courteous staff.

Update to reply to management: This is exactly the type of response I expected. Again, it doesn't matter what the arbitrary policy says. First, the TOS only says rules can be changed without notice. It does NOT specify belongings overnight in lockers. Second, IT DOES NOT MATTER WHAT THE POLICY IS. This occurred during the day. As far as any staff was concerned, I could've been on the floor exercising. They let some random paste eating dunce demand they break a lock and they did it without questioning anything. Had I been there, it would have been a lot worse. As I mentioned in the original review below, there was already a precedent established.

After one month of leaving my belongings in a locker with a padlock and key, I came in today, 03/26/2025, I find the lock and all of my personal items were gone.

I go the the front desk and explain the situation. I'm then asked if the lock was black and required a key (it did). Then I'm told the most ridiculous story.

Another member asked them to cut the lock because his stuff was in there and thought someone else came along and locked it. What? That means that not only was that member a complete moron, it also means the staff took him at his word at face value.

I consider myself luck that the moron had some integrity because he could've easily said thanks and taken everything. They produce a large black trash bag that had everything I brought in there so that's nice. I'm then told that you're not allowed to leave items in lockers overnight. I ask for the TOS that says this and what I was given doesn't say that at all. It simply says they can change the rules at anytime. Then another staff member tells me there's a big sign he'd be happy to show me. Cheeky fella, isn't he? I did miss the sign and that's my fault. However, there was a precedent of my stuff being in a locker overnight for at least one month with no issues.

I don't believe I'll cancel my membership because I'm on the $15/month plan and only use the elliptical twice per week. Now I know to simply bring my backpack with me and keep it in sight and leave with it.

Very inconvenient when you plan your workout before work, only to find out—again—that the gym has no running water. I live in Durham and work in Chapel Hill, so I rely on this location for convenience. This is the second time this has happened, and last time, it made me late for work on Tuesday, 3/18. Now it’s 3/21, and you’re still out of water?

A heads-up or notification system would go a long way in preventing members from wasting time showing up just to be turned away. Consistency and communication matter. Also, I’m pretty sure a gym can’t legally operate without water for this long…

I've been going to this Planet Fitness (Chapel Hill) for at least a couple of years so I think I'm in a good position to comment on it. As with almost any business there are pros and cons, but I think in this case the pros outweigh the cons. I also would like to add a special note to "the owner" at the end of this review. Overall I've had a good experience at this gym. You have to start with the idea that it's not like a normal gym with free weights and squat racks etc. The closest they come are Smith machines, but given that it's a gym for the masses that is extremely reasonable in terms of cost, I think it works great. Many of the folks here are kids from the local universities and in general they are a great crowd to work out around. I'm definitely not College age but I find talking to them is a lot of fun and many are as curious about me as I am about them. We trade workout tips, mostly they give me theirs. Picture a baboon talking to a mountain lion :) Generally it's a very friendly and respectful atmosphere. Gym replaced a lot of the equipment the year before last and the quality of the equipment is excellent. I'm not sure about the treadmills, I don't use them but they seem fine. It does get very crowded especially evenings during the work week, but if you watch carefully you'll find times that it is not very crowded at all. As far as cons, it is true that the paper towel machines often do run out of paper. Given that the whole point of this is to prevent covid and other viruses from spreading, they could do a better job of keeping up with these. It's a public health issue and as much as I love the College crowd they do turn this place into a germ festival. And it is definitely true that there are some awful front desk people. Especially late at night, they seem to believe that their main job is to eat Doritos and keep up with the feeds on their phones. And take naps, that's critical too. I've had the same experience of being completely ignored as I walked into the gym at night. But this rarely happens any other time of day. For the most part the staff is friendly and helpful. Now as far as Mr or Ms Owner: telling folks who are complaining to contact the general manager with their problems is an insulting and absurd way to deal with your customers. Don't you care enough to get involved? It's such a pathetically hands-off approach and makes you seem as if you don't care at all. What you should be doing is getting the general manager to contact these folks and facilitate resolution. Or even better, *you should facilitate resolution. Provide a phone number or an email or anything. If you care about your customers you need to get more engaged. Or if it's too much for you, get up from your tanning bed and hire a chatbot. They would do a better job and you could add the empathy algorithm for just 10 bucks a month :)

Their monthly “cancel at anytime” membership has cancellation restrictions and a $60 early termination fee. Didn’t know you could even terminate early on a monthly membership. Turns out you need to stay signed up for at least 12 months.

Everywhere you look, more fees.

I would avoid PF in general.

My girl and I went to Planet Fitness Chapel Hill location close to midnight on December 28 (Saturday night). When we arrived there, the only staff at the front desk did not even greet us when I greeted him. This was the first time I've seen this particular staff member.

When my girl went to the female's restroom, she noticed that the paper towel dispensers were empty, 2 toilets were out of order, and the ones that were not didn't have bathroom tissues refilled.

I also noticed that multiple dispensers around the gym were either empty or almost empty. The staff was just using his phone at the front desk doing nothing. And before we left the gym, he was just sleeping on the front desk when the gym clearly needs maintenance.

We expected more professional and friendlier customer service, and better maintained facility.

My only comment about this gym is the size. The location is too small for the amount of people it gets, but I’d assume you’d need to get there during early or after hours to make the most of it.

My review rating isn’t about the gym itself but the way the team handled my issue with my account and money.

I’ve told the staff to cancel my account sometime in the beginning of this year because I couldn’t make that location my home gym (I moved from Indiana.) after a bit of back and forth I’ve decided to ultimately cancel my account. I’ve said my thanks to the team and moved on after almost 2 years spent with PF.

Everything was fine until July. I was charged from planet fitness on my second bank account and got overdrawn. I couldn’t get my bank to dispute because they needed planet fitness to refund me first before they could.

I’ve contacted them about the situation and they were able to help me with my first refund after many calls. Then I got charged again last month.

I was told time and time again that I needed to get into contact with their manager then the manager said the regional manager needed to approve my refund. I ended up walking in and canceling everything with my name for good.

Although it’s only $25. It was money that I was not expecting to lose. Wouldn’t recommend transferring home gyms I would just find alternative gym instead.

The employees go out of their way to help and make sure you have the best gym experience that you can have. They always greet you by name when you come in the door and answer any questions no matter how small. There are classes offered so you can focus on certain areas of your body. I have taken some of them and they have been worth it. The trainer breaks down what you’re doing so you can understand what you are doing and will be able to do what you learned on your own. I love this location - they are open 24hrs and most of the staff is great. They recently upgraded strength equipment.
They are very busy with college crowd, but morning are reasonable.
Unfortunately recently (probably last 2-3 months ) they underwent some culture change. This is NOT #nojudgement GYM anymore. I understand the rules BUT there's a way to be... kind about it. This is probably the only gym where I was approached by staff in a unprofessional manner. And I saw her doing the same aggressive approach to a few more customers (made me feel better about myself but not about this place).

ABSURD, UNREASONABLE, EXPLOITATIVE

My son and I were genuinely interested in joining after many years as members of other local gyms. Planet Fitness helped me work past that interest over the course of the five hours I spent trying to get answers from them. The answers I received after hours on the phone (texting and calling) were absurdly unwelcoming.

We simply wanted a tour of the gym and a complimentary workout to assess whether or not the gym was a good fit for us. After four hours of being assured a free day pass was available if only I was sufficiently competent to find the correct drop-down menu (none exists), I was referred to their HQ (you cannot access the local gym directly by telephone).

After a >20 minute delay, Planet Fitness HQ informed me that none of the Planet Fitness branches within 30 minutes of me offered the free one-day passes. Instead, they offered to permit my son and me to pay $40 to take a tour and try the machines. That's more than the cost of any of their monthly plans (twice as much as their "Classic" plan). While I was waiting, I got to listen to a litany of pre-recorded messages addressing the many complaints Planet Fitness receives per month (e.g., billing their annual fee within two months of paying their sign-up fee).

Had we liked the facility, my son and I were both planning to buy the "Black Card" membership at the time of the visit. Now, that visit will never take place and we will be returning to our neighborhood YMCA where prospective members are encouraged to try the facility free for one week.

O2 fitness frequently offers a free month to try their facilities. The Y offers several swimming pools, basketball courts, a track, and racket ball courts in addition to free weights, weight machines, and cardio machines. It also offers a sliding scale for students and others who cannot afford a full price membership. You can reach the local gym facilities to speak with the employees at both O2 and the YMCA.

I'm sorry I wasn't afforded an opportunity to review PF with the benefit of a larger sample size, but the exposure I did have was entirely unsatisfactory. For those who are new to gym memberships, I strongly advise against joining a gym before you know if the facilities are a good fit for your needs. $20 is $20 too much for honoring a business with your interest and should be taken as an indication of a predatory disposition within the business.

When you work for PF and you visit other PF in the area. You compare there location to yours and I know all of them can’t be as great as yours. But I do except you to at least live up to the Planet Fitness standards. The floor, paper, towel stations, and overall appearance of the gym was a little disappointing. Been coming here for a year and decided to leave a review today. This morning I watched an angry blind man go off on a screaming tirade to the staff. They handled it perfectly and calmed him down. I later watched them assist the blind man around the gym. The staff is very friendly (except the bald one) and they keep this gym clean.

My teenage son goes to this gym not recommend it. After over a year I got a text from my son saying they needed me to come in and sign a parental waiver form I signed when I signed him up. When he called I was told I had never signed the parental waiver. I explained that I had signed it when I came in to sign my son up and my son had been going there for over a year. Staff told me they were under new management and had been enforcing the waiver policy for the past two weeks. I again explained my son went almost daily and I had signed the waiver when I started the membership.
Staff began arguing with me, telling me I signed up online and had never signed the waiver because it had to be signed in person, and was ruder than he was initially. I had to ask him at least ten times for his name while he continued to argue with me about something I knew he was wrong about. He finally gave me his first name but refused to give me his last name. I asked to speak to the manager. He said he was the shift lead and there was no manager. I asked for the manager’s name and was the first name Chad. I told Chris I was going to leave my home and my guests and younger child to come down and sign the waiver again nd then speak with the manager and owner and leave a review.

On the way to the gym, I got a phone call saying that they had “done some digging” and when I signed up in person I HAD signed the waiver and that there was no need to come in at 9:00 on a Saturday night after all so my could use the membership.

So the alternative was no one at the establishment had checked to see if a minor had a parental waiver for over a year when that minor is at the gym almost daily.

I won’t cancel my son’s membership because that would just punish him. But once he can drive I will offer a membership at a better gym to replace this one. Since many of his friends attend this gym, he may want to stay there. However, I wouldn’t recommend this gym to anyone. Staff were rude, wrong, and unprofessional. Instead of arguing with me and making rude comments I could hear, he should have believed me when I told him I had signed up in person and signed the waiver at that time and figured it out before I had to threaten to write a review and contact the manager and owner. I understand mistakes are made but customer service must mean nothing at this gym. I did get a hollow apology when I got the call when I was on the way down there. I say hollow because of the tone, attitude, and nasty comments I could hear him making in the background. He couldn’t seem to understand why I was bothered by his behavior. Perhaps whoever (if anyone) at this this business reads these reviews can help him understand:

1) When a customer pays for a service and follows the company’s policies, they expect to be able to use that service. If you block them from using that service when they have done so, they may be upset.

2) When a customer tries to explain to you they have done something - such as signing up in person and signing a waiver at that time - and you tell them that they singed up online and didn’t sign a waiver instead of believing them and working with them to try to figure out why there is suddenly a problem after over a year, they may become upset.

3. When you argue with a customer about something they know they did and insist they did something different instead of believing them, they may become upset,

4. When you refuse to give a customer your name and instead talk over them and continue to insist they did something they didn’t and tell them they are wrong instead of working with them, they may become upset.

5. When it turns out you are wrong and you’ve been rude to a customer, saying you apologize doesn’t really count when they can hear you badmouthing them in the background.

I hope my son will want to go to another one when he can drive. There are many in the area to choose from. Do yourself a favor and pick one. Customer service has never been great but this was completely unreasonable.

Place has decent machine but weight are no where near heavy enough even a 15 year old would find it too light although the machine are Variable there are no bench or squat or deadlift areas and the dumbbells only go up to 75 lbs and there's too many cardio machines edit: the new machines are even worse now but and the Smith machines are garbage but the cable machines are better.

I really appreciate the amount of equipment spread out through a large space. There are a lot of workout options. The staff work hard on keeping the equipment clean. I feel safe and welcome at Planet Fitness. A special shout-out to Chris and Ameika!

Owners of clubs that charge ridiculous monthly fees need to pay attention to PF’s excellent value via monthly dues, exercise equipment, facilities, and club cleanliness.
