If you want a gym with customer service, consistent management, working equipment and personal trainers- this is not the place for you. If you want some basic equipment and a testosterone filled weight area, this is your place.

From the moment you walk though the door the front desk people are friendly and genuinely interested in your needs. The gym is clean and the equipment is very nice. It's a smaller gym but it's the vibe and people are there to work out. Simply put awesome glad I gave it a try and you should too

My son is a member at this gym. I went with him twice to check it out. I LOVED it! If it was in my town I would definitely be a member. The staff (especially Bob!) is wonderful. Everyone is helpful and friendly. Both times I went everything was extremely clean. I love the treadmills! It's in a great location as well.

The very best things about this gym are the class offerings and the instructors - Renee, Lacey, and Andy in particular are phenomenal. They make working out fun - and they are super encouraging no matter how close you are to your fitness goals. They learn names, notice when you don't attend a class, congratulate you when you make progress, correct you gently, and really care about the people who come to work out with them. They take the intimidation factor out of going to the gym and trying hard things, and they've really helped me renew my commitment to health and fitness.
This gym would get 5 stars if they would replace or repair broken equipment and offer more classes.

I've worked out at a LOT of difference facilities in my 29 years and moving to Raleigh from Idaho, I looked around to find a gym that suits my needs and this one had the best balance of equipment/price/cleanliness that I needed.
PROS: For someone like me who mostly uses free weights, squat/bench/shoulder press racks, they have all three including a huge set of dumbbells. There are plenty of machines as well that can give you a full workout. They have a large fitness classroom and 3 rows of ellipticals/bikes for the cardio beasts out there. It's about $20 per month which is a steal and during March it was only a $5 sign up fee. Your mileage may vary on that one. (Can't hurt to ask them to lower it as I'm sure it's higher now). The locker rooms are smaller but in good shape and clean. I never use them anyways.
CONS: I've found this at a lot of gyms but re racking of weights can be a minor annoyance but then again, you just get an extra workout of lifting more weight! It is probably on the medium/medium small size of a gym so after work hours can get packed. Some of the people that go there tend to stay on the equipment for quite a while but that's not a reflection of the gym but rather the clientele.
OVERALL: This gym gets the job done at the right price point and you won't feel like you are sacrificing. Definitely a good deal.

Just moved here from NJ and I have never been to a retro with a lay down tanning bed. I love that and the staff here is ALWAYS so friendly and helpful. =)

Beware, if you sign a contract with this gym. The fine print includes an auto renewal feature that is never discussed and you have to write to the headquarter office to cancel and it may take more than a month. Our gym membership expired before the contract for training was complete. They kept taking the money for the personal training even though we couldn't use the gym. Of course they wanted the gym membership renewed so they could keep getting more money from us. Stay away.

I ended up having to workout here after being a Rapid Fitness member (they closed suddenly and gave no notice to members). I still had 4 months left on my contract with Rapid Fitness, but Retro Fitness (which is owned by the same people) would not allow the membership to continue without having to repay as if I were a new member. After being ripped off, I didn't want to do business with these people any longer, duh.
This is a very small and crowded gym that is managed the same way Rapid Fitness was (check the Rapid Fitness complaints, there were even local news stories done about their business practices). Something is always broken, always out of paper towels/wiping towels, dirty bathrooms, etc.

Decent place for working out especially for beginners or those who dont like big gyms with lots of people. Equipment is decent but the staff is amazing. Smoothie bar is not up to healthy expectations. High in sugar and carbs. Other than that though its not bad.

Do not go here! Once you sign the contract, you will be sorry!
Go to another gym, not Retro or Rapid.

A solid gym with all the basics, Retro was previously part of Rapid Fitness before being sold and breaking off on its own. The space is tight inside but it's utilized pretty well with a nice selection of treadmills, recumbent bikes and ellipticals. The gym area for both free weights and machines is diverse and plentiful enough to do a decent circuit workout. Or go a little heavier with the dumbbells and plates, it's your call.
The single group exercise room seems pretty clean and they do a variety of body pump, aerobics, spin and yoga classes there. And the folks at Retro are pretty solid and friendly from desk people to trainers to patrons. A little hipster given the neighborhood but a good overall cross-section of people. Not to many muscleheads although occasionally you'll run into a clueless person texting on a machine for 10 minutes, sigh.
Overall it's a good gym, not the best but plenty good enough for a excellent workout and in a decent spot. Go Retro Fitness!

Retro Fitness acquired two Rapid Fitness Gyms. We belonged to the Rapid Fitness Northridge gym that shut down without any notice on Aug. 3rd. According to NC law, the club must provide the same amenities and this location doesn't have a pool or a spa.
Rapid Fitness has not reimbursed us (we had 14 months left each on our contracts) and has dinged people a 25% fee for early termination, despite NC law. We have done everything required (they wanted a cancellation policy sent certified mail). We went to the corporate office, emailed their manager, filed a complaint with the Attorney General's office & this morning filed a complaint with the BBB.
I believe this is relevant according to Yelp's guidelines because we would want to know before joining a gym what their track record was and how they handled problems. They were selling memberships the week they closed. I would also encourage people to check out other reviews on Yelp for the Northridge location as well as complaints against RF at the BBB.
Will update if/when we receive a reimbursement.

Despite the growing number of members they keep removing classes and rarely add anything new. After I saw most of my favorite classes being removed and no variety I sent a certified letter cancelling my month-to-month membership. I paid for my last month's membership fee when I signed up AND they acknowledged that they had received the cancellation letter... yet they kept taking money out of my account. I called the home office and I had to argue with them until they agreed to refund me and instead charge me an $8.00 cancellation fee. Shady way to run a business.

I like the gym But the corporate office is a pain in the butt. I was working in Raleigh on contract and had to end my contract early. The kicker is that they don't want to let me out of the contract because I already had the address that I gave them. Its not that hard to see that I have lived in to city's over the past year. Save your self the hassle and go to Fitness Connection in north Hills where they don't make you sing a contract. I'm sorry for the bad review but bad customer service leads to negative feelings!
