Great gym and staff, but they don't open until later in the day so there's no options for people who have to train in the morning.

(Updated) Drove an hour here from Durham to check it out and was very impressed with the facilities and setting. Honestly significantly better than anything I’ve seen in the Triangle. Grading felt very fair and accurate, and the routes were fun and safe. Most of the routes were leftover from the competition the previous weekend, and the setting staff did a phenomenal job with them. The previous time I went here there was a competition that wasn’t marked on the calendar and I wasn’t able to climb, but I was offered a few free day passes due to the distance which I was able to redeem on the second visit which I really appreciate. Overall a great gym!

Just an average gym. Was in for a competition and it could have been a bit more organized as not very convenient for spectators to watch as only 1 parent aloud back at a time. Very crowded. Not very impressed.

This is an excellent climbing facility, and they do a great job of keeping the routes fresh and new. However, their membership pricing is 2x higher than other local options. It’s simply too steep to justify a membership. The management would benefit from running sales around Black Friday or something. It’s an amazing place, but it’s largely empty because of pricing being too high. They lowered pricing recently, but I think they shaved $5 off everything. It’s simply not enough.

————-

Appreciate the response, but I just double checked the pricing, and I stand by my previous comment. Especially for a family of 3, other local options are 1/2 the price.

I have gone to ruckus multiple times since it has opened just to shake things up from my regular gym. Unfortunately I don’t think I will ever go back. Every time I go I will say I am impressed with the space and cleanliness but am unimpressed in the lackluster routes. I am mostly 5.10 climber that’s only sent a handful of 11.a’s outside and v3 boulder yet I have been able to flash multiple 5.12s on lead and flash v6s and 7s. I also was out of climbing for over a year and my first
weekend back climbed at ruckus to again find myself flashing grades I couldn’t do pre injury and shouldn’t have been able to pull onto a start with a year off. My little brother in his first month of climbing flashed a v8 his first trip. I have seen the owner’s response that they want to make this a welcoming gym for all levels which is awesome… just grade the routes what they are then, there’s no need for ego grades. This could also lead to being unsafe as people could think they climb a certain grade then go outside and get in way over their head. Also for some reason the chains at the anchor are always the crux of the route, they are stiff and incredibly hard to clip the rope into. I also had an experience recently where my friend went to lead belay me in which one of the front desk workers asked if she was certified there, she wasn’t which is cool that the gym staff is observant and looking out for safety but when she asked if she could get lead tested (she has multiple years of lead belay and climbing experience ) the front desk worker responded there was no one working that was certified to do a lead belay test. I thought that was odd as three people were working behind the desk but if people aren’t experienced or certified to test someone that’s fine it is what it is EXCEPT when I was telling this story to another friend of mine and she asked for a description of who was working she expressed one of the girls there had done her lead belay test. :/ kinda odd to say there’s no one there who can do it when there was, I would get it they were busy and could not spare the staff but … there was only two other people in the ropes area and a handful of people bouldering and all three workers stayed behind the desk. I also want to end my review with talking about the price which is outrageous, I love climbing but I could never justify spending that much money to touch some plastic. What even is an initiation fee? Talking to friends that work in other gyms it takes like two seconds to set up someone’s account so why are we charging people 60$? If you want to try climbing once as a fun activity or bring your kids somewhere to get their energy out sure this is a good gym for that. If you really want to improve in your climbing or climb fun routes that are spot on in grade then I would recommend First Hand for great boulders and if ropes is more your style then the ultimate climbing gym or if your willing to drive TRC.

Very friendly staff, well designed equipment in perfect condition, and great walls! Ruckus has a wide variety of climbs including auto belays, belays, and bouldering. I only climbed auto belays, but all of the courses I tried were a good amount of challenging and very well designed. I definitely recommend this gym to anyone who enjoys climbing, even kids! They have a 4+ area with easier walls and a slide.

We had my daughter’s 8th birthday at Ruckus and it was awesome!! The staff was so kind and great with the kids, most of whom had never done rock climbing before. The kids had the BEST time. Ruckus has a perfect party room with a fridge for the cake, a sink, and even a microwave. We had an ice cream cake, so having the fridge was key.

We will definitely have future parties here, and we’re looking forward to Ruckus summer camp!

Ruckus is a phenomenal climbing gym! I stopped in to climb during a recent visit to Greensboro, and got a tour from the owner, who was unbelievably kind and helpful. The bouldering wall is incredible and has a great mix of difficulty levels, as well as some comp routes. The auto-belays had 3-4 routes each, which I loved, as my current gym only sets 2 routes per auto-belay. The community spaces, locker rooms, gym area, and upper floor are all very intentionally designed, and I can't wait to come back and climb again in the future!

Had a really fun afternoon here. The gym is fairly small, but there’s plenty to do at each level. Bouldering is beginner friendly, but I also found a few harder projects for myself. Gym staff was friendly and hooked us up on Christmas Eve with a discounted day pass. Holds are all brand new (grippy) and setting was thoughtful at all levels I tried. If they had a kilter or tension board it would be perfect.

EDIT: I stand corrected! I guess I was having too much fun to realize there a tension board! Ok, this is gonna be my place when I visit my mom.

Finally a gym that is close to me that I love! I have been a member here shortly after they opened and I have been impressed with how the place is run. The owner and staff are all great and helpful and the vibe is friendly and welcoming. I took a belay class which opened up the top rope routes for my girlfriend and I to have even more stuff to do there. They have a small tension board too for the days when they have events or it is more crowded than normal.

The restrooms and workout area are clean and the routes are varied with many different climbing styles included in the setting. There is plenty of bouldering as well as top rope for a full day of climbing and the bouldering routes change enough to keep it fresh but also let you project things for a few weeks if you need to. Can’t say enough good things about Ruckus!

Clean, well-designed, and new climbing gym in a great stop-in location. We popped in for a quick climb on a road trip and found it easy to fill out a waiver online, watch the video and get climbing in a timely manner. The day pass price was a little steep compared to other places I’ve climbed and it didn’t include free gear for your first visit— which would be a nice touch and something many other climbing gyms offer.

Overall it was a really fun, laid back visit. Climbs were interesting, but I think they could afford a little more variety in setter style— climbed several routes from 5.6 to 5.11 and it seemed like they all had similar “cruxes” and styles.

They have a great environment for birthday parties and competitions with comfortable seating and a layout where you can view the entirety of the gym in a single location. Will definitely stop by again on my next drive through!

The holds are new and grippy. The facility is clean and the staff are friendly. Great bouldering section. The top rope climbs were fun and challenging but a bit inconsistent. Meaning they would be easy most of the way and have a move that didn’t fit with the flow… I don’t know if that’s an intentional crux or not but it would throw the flow of the climb off; small and only gripe.

We were there for a USA climbing competition. The staff was really nice and the competition was super crowded, but I think they did the best they could. A phenomenal new gym with consistently fun and unique climbs. Visited Ruckus twice now and was really impressed with the setting and atmosphere there both times.

Boulders:
Every single boulder in the V0-V5 range felt really well polished and dialed in. Each one had something to “teach” climbers pushing grade, or something for experienced boulderers to practice. Setting felt fluid, thoughtful, and intentional—even the V1’s had some cool or challenging moves. Everything felt consistently graded, with no climbs feeling soft or sandbagged relative to others of equal grade.

Ropes:
Ropes definitely felt a little stiffer than boulders, much closer to outdoor grades. A 5.8 at Ruckus felt comparable in terms of strength/complexity to an outdoor 5.7, and that pattern held up to about 5.11- (felt like an outdoor 5.10ish.) Your mileage may vary here, depending on how comfortable you are with smearing-heavy setting styles and more technical climbing. Still a very fun and fluid style with no “gimme” moves—almost every single sequence felt purposeful and planned.

Vibes:
The owner (John) and staff are all super chill, friendly, and routinely walk around to keep a watchful eye out. The gym is brand new and immaculately clean, save for the customary dusting of chalk. The workout room was well equipped and there were plenty of cubbies/lockers for storage. The only thing missing was a bit more expansive food/drink selection, which was pretty limited if you’re sugar-free.

Bonus points:
Having a slightly separated area of shorter/easier (i.e. kid-friendly) climbs really helped curb a lot of the chaos that young kids can sometimes bring to climbing gyms. It even has an overlook for parents with photo ops in mind.

Overall, this is easily one of my favorite climbing gyms in the state, well worth even an hour-long drive from Charlotte. 10/10 would climb again (and did!)

This is a great climbing gym for beginners to experienced competitive climbers. We came with a large group and felt the process of getting started was very user friendly even for the most novice among us. The staff were great at gently reminding us to keep safety a priority when we were standing under someone’s fall zone, which I appreciated since we had a number of kids under 12. The kids loved the easy wall that led to a slide at the top, and clipping in the auto belay ropes is so much easier than climbing used to be when everyone had to have a belay partner. They have plenty of those partner-only walls as well for more experienced climbers, have a huge bouldering section, and their rental package includes climbing shoes and chalk along with the harness. It wasn’t too crowded when we came before lunch and we never had to wait for a place to climb. Highly recommend for birthday parties—there’s a party room we used to eat lunch since no one was using it and we had a large group.

Ruckus is definitely my favourite climbing gym. It offers a wide variety of grades to climb, making it friendly for beginners and challenging for more advanced climbers. I appreciate that the various routes require different styles of climbing, allowing me to become more versatile in my techniques. Though there are no roofs, there are abundant overhangs and slabs. Unlike other gyms I've been to, Ruckus has quite a selection of auto-belays, which is helpful since I usually climb alone. When it comes to grading, it feels inconsistent, with routes being sandbagged but mostly soft. However, this is understandable for a new gym.

The staff are amazing and super friendly, especially Cass, Alex, and the gym manager, Diamond. People there are always welcoming and willing to provide beta when you get stuck. The gym includes many amenities, such as a yoga room, party room, lounge space, and my favourite, a fitness room. Although the fitness room could use a little more equipment, it still has enough to get a good workout in before or after your climb. The cost for a day pass is on the higher side, which might deter university students. Thankfully, I was gifted a membership for my birthday, allowing me to go there quite often after work. I'm really going to miss this place when I move. Overall, the environment of the place is quite cheerful and vibrant.

TL;DR: Friendly staff and clientele, plenty of amenities and different types of climbs, grading could use some improvement, day-pass price is a little high.

Ruckus is a great new climbing gym in the triad. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The climbing area is spacious and clean. I like that they have 9 auto belays for single climbers and a good selection of lead and top-rope climbs. I attended Diedre's fit class on Tuesday night and really enjoyed that.

The reason for 4 stars instead of 5: I think the pricing is steep, especially for one day passes. I also think that they could have put more climbs in the area than they did.

All in all, I am happy to have a new climbing gym in the area!

I have had nothing but great experiences at this gym! The woman at the front Deidre was so pleasant and welcoming. I have found all staff to be incredibly helpful. Most important it was CLEAN and modern, it’s hard to find a nice gym that feels clean but this place was spotless, and full of vibrant colors!
There are climbs available for all skill levels and interests which was nice. They offer great classes, lessons, and even offer birthday party spaces!
This is definitely my families new go to gym, happy to have them in our community!

Ruckus is an awesome place! The space was clean, organized, and all the staff were incredibly kind. The kids spaces are just as thought out and creative as the full bouldering and lead walls. They also have an amazing selection of auto-belays that let everyone have something to do, even if that is enjoying the wonderful lounge. The setting was extremely unique and creative, even the easier grades. I told the head setter they had some of the most fun V0s I have ever climbed! I highly recommend checking out Ruckus!

This was a really fun place to take the kids and burn energy for a few hours. There was enough climbing and sliding to keep them busy for hours. The staff is friendly and accommodating as well.

Ruckus is a beautiful, well thought-out climbing gym. There are walls even accessible for the youngest most inexperienced climbers, and comfortable space for those of us who don't climb but bring climbers. The staff is friendly and accommodating!

This place is the best! It’s brand new, squeaky clean- you can tell they take pride and accountability in this building- and the staff is amazing. Tons of climbs, whether you want to autobelay, toprope, lead or boulder, you will not be bored here. But if you DO need a break from the excitement- there are some excellent spots for that as well; a perfect cowork level with plenty of seating and tables overlooking the entire facility, quieter yoga and party rooms, and a traditional fitness center for your regular strength/cardio workouts! I’m so glad they offer yoga and fitness classes too, it’s a nice break from regular climbing and I love engaging with the rest of the ruckus/climbing community through those classes. Add this to your list of must-visit climbing gyms!

I've been to Ruckus a few times now and had so much fun! The gym is so clean, the setting is amazing, and the staff is so knowledgeable and willing to help! The guy at the desk, Alex, was super helpful when getting us our day passes and another employee, Deidre, told us about some of the events they have going on! What a great atmosphere to climb! Would highly recommend!!

Best addition to the Triad area! Tons of great climbs on both ropes and boulders, a lot of classes and events, and just a fun place to be. Staff is fantastic, the facility is pristine- you can tell they are thorough with their cleaning- and the jams are always rocking!:)

Ruckus is an all around exceptional climbing facility, I love being a member!

My favorite things about Ruckus:
- Safety is an absolute priority, which for me personally, triumphs everything else. Staff is attentive to the patrons to ensure they are following safety procedures, lead/top rope certifications are thorough and informative, and the routes are thoughtfully set to try and be as safe as possible. It makes me feel very comfortable climbing there knowing their standards are exceptionally high.
- Friendly staff that encourage community and inclusivity.
- Quality equipment and quality routes that are reset frequently to keep regulars coming back for more!
- General willingness of the gym to meet customer needs. Adding classes, community events, local partnerships, etc. I can’t wait to see how Ruckus continually looks for ways to serve their customers, they are already doing so much and only recently opened!
- Fun jams, clean facilities, and just generally speaking immaculate vibes.
- And again, really thoughtfully set routes of all grades and styles that I can’t wait to see more of over time.

So glad Ruckus came to Greensboro and looking forward to improving my climbing skills and continuing to grow my climbing community!

Fun, but disappointing for the price. If you are new to climbing, this is a great spot to start your journey but it will only take you so far. Even if the routes get harder, the facility design and execution will prevent it from ever being a premier climbing gym. If you want to become a better climber, consider Tumblebees and FirstHand, or travel to TRC.

If you've ever climbed at T-bees, you probably have some opinions on how they can improve. As a dad and 5.13 climber with plans to train for 5.14, I had high expectations for a new gym because I can't travel every weekend. Ruckus made some improvements over T-bees but they largely missed the mark for providing a family-friendly climbing environment and modern climbing gym for all levels of climbers.

The Good:
· Morning hours
· Taller walls
· Staff personalities are largely excellent
· Clean and bright (things will get dirty and greasy with time)
· Holds have friction (this will change)
· Vertical route setting is largely fun and engaging

The Meh:
· Clearly not designed by climbers: so much wasted vertical space that other NC gyms capitalized on and no substantial steep climbing
· Wasted wall space: most lines only have one route, which could easily support 2-3. Cliffhangers has eleven 5.12s to Ruckus's five (three of which are probably 11c/d).
· Grades are worse than soft. I get that "grades don't matter" but that's not an excuse to make everything easier to inflate egos. In fact it's potentially dangerous for anyone transitioning outdoors: do not assume that you can climb 5.12a outdoors anywhere in the south because you did so at Ruckus.
· While the staff have more social skills than your average gym, they do not have a similar collective outdoor experience, especially in NC.
· Like most modern gyms, coming here alone as a lead/rope climber is painfully boring. When multiple staff are doing little on a slow day, there are so many ways to make the new or experienced clients' experience way better than doing nothing.
· "Progressively harder" routes are uncharacteristic of most climbing and provide a false sense of security down low.
· It's actually hotter inside than Tumblebees; I don't understand how.

The Bad:
· Ruckus is comically expensive. With the same number of routes and only twice the sq. ft. as T-bees, it cost me 3x as much per month for a family of three. They are priced similarly to TRC that has four gyms that are each 2x larger than Ruckus (in comparison to 50 routes at Ruckus, a Raleigh climber has access to 3-400 routes, excluding Richmond and Fayetteville).
· There are no daily discounts for children like most climbing gyms, in spite of the owner's adamance that he wants a family environment. E.g., I invited another family to join us until we realized it would cost them $150 for a few hours of climbing time for a family of five. Conversely, TRC offers a $10 discount for children and a daily free pass for any new client coming in with a member. Thus, it would be cheaper to drive to Raleigh for a large family.
· The pricing schedule might make sense except T-bees has just as many routes and significantly more bouldering problems and is $10 cheaper for a day pass and $1500 cheaper for an annual membership for a family of 3. The owner's explanation for this is the extra amenities that many won't ever use, like a 10-person twice weekly yoga class that has been canceled more than not, a weight room that is nearly empty, a party room, a balcony that could have been more wall space, a locker room that climbing gear cannot be stored in, not to mention conditioning all the empty space.

In closing, Ruckus so far has been a poor execution by a non-climber dad and entrepreneur who didn't like Tumblebees but only managed to create something shiny that caters to novices and birthday parties and thus will have little value per dollar for anyone wanting to excel. At the onset, I hypothesized that Ruckus would put Tumblebees out of business, but I have clearly been proven wrong: even my children asked to go back to Tumblebees, and so we will.

It was….O.K. Not the best gym, not the worst. And with them pricing themselves on the same level as other places like Inner Peaks and Cliff Hangers….they just were as good or as creative.

Quick Synopsis:
Simply put, my time there was disappointing. They have premium amenities without premium climbing. And deceptive online membership pricing. (As of this review)

Pros:
• Though soft, sometimes reeeeal soft, some of their boulder problems were interesting.
• They have a nice gym, and nice lounge space.
• The workers seemed friendly.
• Nice seating space and lots of cubbies.
• Signage was well done.

Cons:
• Boulder walls seemed…uninspired. Not a very interesting wall layout. No roofs to climb, too many slabs (this could be a positive for some), and overall…not a whole lot of problems to do.
• Their lead wall has the worst top anchor clipping I have ever seen. Extremely stiff and sometimes literally unclippable. I was so frustrated by then I started just finishing my routes on the last quickdraw instead.
• The lead routes I did were boring, uninteresting, and very disjointed. There was also not a single separate hand start problem on Lead/Top Rope and even one problem where the tag was drilled into the wall no where near a hold….you had to guess the starting point.
• Their membership pricing for families is deceiving and more expensive than some of the best gyms in the state. It’s listed at $155 on one page and $110 on another….but their reasoning is SO dumb. Get this….$110 is for a single person on the family plan. $155 if you add a second person. But it is defined as $110 for 2 people in its description. $110 seems reasonable but $155 is pushing it’s pricing to elite gym pricing and this gym is not that. So now I question all their pricing. Is the annual Family Membership $1650 for 1 person and the extra $408 for 2? So the real price for 2 people is $2058??? No idea.
• Their lead belay test was very….weird. Really weird. I’ve done Lead Belay at multiple gyms and this was by far the strangest test.

Being the only modern gym in Greensboro I was hoping for high quality at a reasonable price but instead we got a Solid gym at a premium price. Not a bad gym, just nothing great. It was disappointing.

FINALLY! A good, modern, climbing gym in the Triad. Fantastic selection of lead routes, top ropes, auto belays, and boulders. Staff members are super friendly and are doing a great job at running a brand new gym. Route setters know what they’re doing - fun routes, safe leading, exciting boulders. Thankful to call Ruckus my new “home gym.”
