We love it here!!! My child has taken swim and gymnastics lessons for the past 3 years, everyone has always been helpful and kind, every coach has been encouraging and just wonderful. The new building improvements have made the space even more functional and it looks amazing!

I’ve had such a fantastic experience with two very different granddaughters at different times . They both grew a tremendous amount in confidence, physical strength, flexibility, and general overall socialization. They always got needed approval, individual attention and really appreciated their instructors. What a difference came about by their attendance!

We have been coming here for about 5 years. My daughters love being here! I will be honest, there are more competitive places that offer cheaper tuition as well as sibling discounts. But, from what I have heard from other families who have attended those facilities, Salem is the top choice! I appreciate not only how they separate the kids in their specific groups, but help work with them individually. They recently held a showcase for the kids who are not on a competitive level, and my daughter loved it! It made her feel proud to receive medals in each area she has been working on, but also motivated her to want to do more for next time. I also appreciate being able to make up days we are unable to attend. Overall, staff is friendly and coaches are great with the kids, helping them where they need it and motivating them to be better.

Our kids have been attending Salem for about 4 years. In the 4 years, we have had a few issues but most of them have been resolved after talking to management. Our kids however have not seen the same amount of progress that the gym has benefited from drafting our account every month. They continue to increase fees every year, but seem to decrease customer service. They are adding on to their facility but before the expansion is complete, they doubled the amount of people in the facility. They make you check yourself in, get your student to their respective lane, they do send communications of the parent procedures in an email that (in my case goes to junk and newsletters), but essentially making you an employee. Maybe soon they’ll send us instructional videos on how to teach our kids swim lessons and we’ll simply pay for pool rental time. Tonight, we simply didn’t do one of the new procedures we received an email about earlier this week and you’d have thought that we had burned the place to the ground or tried to break some type of policy that they had or not paid them this month. It was embarrassing and when we said something, we were “in the wrong”. Not to mention that 4 years of private lessons and our kid is only in level 2 swim mostly due to their turn over with staff, not knowing/being comfortable with giving an autistic kid lessons. I truly hate to write this review because it could be a good place, but they got a lot to learn about customer service.

If you have an anxious child who is scared of water, this is a great option for you!!!
My darling boy struggles with anxiety so badly, and after one hour with Alexis at Salem Swim, his confidence soared and he was not as scared. She knew exactly how much to push and how to communicate with him.

I rarely leave reviews but as a mother of a severely anxious child, I hope this will be helpful to someone wondering about how they do with children who struggle with fear of water.

My baby has been in swim lessons since last July & though it took some time for us to see that she is learning, it’s totally worth it! She enjoys songs with her class as well learning swim techniques. At 18 months old she is able to hold onto the sides of the pool and move herself to grab a toy. Ms. Rebecca is a great teacher & my baby enjoys her.

This is a great place where my kids learn swimming and gymnastics. They teach swimming lessons one-on-one and my child is making rapid progress. Thank you so much to the staff here! The tuition here is also very reasonable!

Keep in mind we have only been once but we both were very impressed!! Everyone was very helpful. I get somewhat nervous in new situations but the staff told us exactly where to go and what to do. The family changing area was helpful because both of us were with her and did not want to be separated. My daughter Skye had a blast! The teachers were super friendly and let me help my daughter feel comfortable even though I was not the parent in the water.
We started and ended on time. The place was clean and VERY VERY warm. I have already referred a few people.

We LOVE it here. My son started swim classes at about 9m and he was so comfortable and happy with the environment and with the teachers. Ms Alexis is our favorite but all the teachers we have encountered are great. Their pool chemistry has been great for us too. We can always get a make up class when we miss so there is no pressure to go boarder line unwell.

My son and I have been taking swim class with Alexis at Salem Gymnastics and Swim for the past 1.5 years. The instruction is excellent and extremely personalized to the benefit of both the parent and student even in a group setting. The progress my son has made is amazing and he is excited showing off his skills! Thank you and we look forward to continuing our swimming journey.

Our swim instructor, Ms Alexis at Salem Gymnastics & Swim, is absolutely fantastic! Not only is she fun and patient with our children but her instructions are clear and easy to follow and she goes out of her way to explain why things are done they way they are. She clearly has a lot of experience and enjoys what she does. We feel very lucky to have her as our swim instructor.

Our family has loved Salem Gymnastics & Swim. We have been there on and off for 6 years for swim lessons (parent/child swim and the independent 3+ classes) and gymnastics (parent/tot, Tumbleweeds and Beginner Girls) for our 4 kids. One of our girls was incredibly anxious and scared of the water and being apart from us (we’re talking throwing up on the pool deck at the thought of swimming without mommy). Alexis, the swim director, has been incredibly patient with each of our kids. I especially appreciate that she explains the “whys” of what they’re doing in the parent/baby swim, as it could seem like you’re spending an awful lot of $ to sing songs in the pool. That’s not the case - she has taught me that everything has a purpose! Our 3 oldest girls are now strong and confident swimmers after having gone through swim classes with her. We couldn’t be happier! And it doesn’t get better than Coach Jeff for gymnastics for young kids - his energy and enthusiasm for little ones having fun while being active and becoming confident in their gross motor skills is just so amazing. The facility itself is beautiful. But mostly we are so thankful for the people that make Salem the special place that it is.

We have been taking our son to swim lessons here since he was 6 months old. He is now 2 years and we have thoroughly enjoyed our experience with Salem Swim. Alexis is a great instructor and we feel that she pushes the children to learn, develop, and grow in the water. It is important to her that parents are comfortable with their children around water and that they are learning for their own safety.

We love Salem Gymnastics and Swim! We started coming here when our baby was 5 months old and having her in swim classes from such a young age has been the best choice. Not only has it helped her to love the water, but it has helped us as parents know how to keep her safe while swimming. We look forward to it every week!

Alexis is a wonderful swim instructor. She is awesome with my daughter and is always giving helpful tips during the lessons. She tells us what our goals are and helps us to reach those goals. I can definitely see progress with each lesson. I appreciate her dedication to help train the little ones to learn the skills of swimming and being safe around water.

**Review exclusive to swim program. Our daughter did not take gymnastics here**

Before touching on the issue that makes this a one star review, I want to speak on the year that our child attended swim lessons at Salem Gymnastics. First, the monthly cost for four 30 minute classes is very expensive. Additionally, the kids would often get in the pool a few minutes late and exit a minute or two early. In the year that my daughter attended, most of which was in the same time slot, she received instruction from at least 6 different teachers. There is no continuity from a staffing perspective. It feels like a lot of college kids with little training take this role. I'm paying top dollar for classes, I expect top level instruction and this wasn't that. From a skill standpoint, I noticed there wasn't a lot of progression which I think speaks not to our daughter's effort/engagement but more so to the above issues outlined. While most of what I have to say is critical, I do want to point out that Ms. Keri is absolutely fantastic.

A few weeks ago, we switched timeslots to accommodate our daughter starting pre-k. When we arrived for swim with the new teacher everything began fine. Our daughter went into the pool and began lessons as normal. We noticed that she got scared of something. We later determined a light came on in the pool and it spooked her. From a combination of what she said, we saw, and the teachers saw/said, she kicked the teacher while trying to move away from the light. The deck leader should have brought us in or ended the lesson but did not. We watched as our 4-year old hugged the teacher's neck for the next 10 minutes because she was obviously frightened. At the conclusion of the class, the deck leader spoke with my wife and stated that "We can't have children hurting teachers", as if my 4 year old, who has attended 50+ classes with no issue, intentionally hurt someone. A flailing kick is not an act of malice; that deck leader should really know better. Then the deck leader stated that our child would need private lessons and be moved down to a level one despite her being in level two for months. This person, who is basically a shift supervisor, evidently thinks they have unilateral decision making ability. Following that conversation, my wife requested for someone to contact us. After waiting for four days, we reached out and the Aquatics director called us back. She relayed the information that we were already aware of; however, after speaking with Ms. Keri and likely reviewing the video (if there is one) reached back out to apologize to us and agreed it was accidental. There was a genuine attempt on her part to make it right for us, which I'll keep private. We ultimately decided not to continue with lessons here in light of the handling of the entire situation and the lack of skill progression that we feel is more a reflection on the program than our child.

My 2 year old initially did swimming and gymnastics 2x a week . I dropped her from swimming only because it was a mommy and me class and I felt like they weren’t teaching actual techniques it was mostly singing songs and stuff but I felt like that was appropriate for her age . I will definitely be singing her back up for the summer when she turns 3. As far as the gymnastics she LOVES it they have slides balance beams play great music and the teachers and staff are very polite and attentive. The tuition is also not that bad for 4 classes a month. They also have moms night out … nerf night and holiday themed days it’s really cool u get to meet moms that have kids the same age as yours and I just love this place .

Our son has been enrolled since he was 3 months old. The amazing coaches at Salem Gym have been absolutely wonderful getting both him and I comfortable in the water without him needing floaties. He can now swim underwater with help, back float, and loves to jump into the pool. He is so comfortable in the water! Coaches are fantastic, and the pricing is fair. Especially impressed with their customer service. They are always willing to help. I cannot speak highly enough of Salem Gym and highly recommend starting with their water babies class as soon as possible.

Customer service is wonderful Phillipa in the office is very professional and knowledgeable. She helped me with all my questions and concerns and is a testament to how customers and people in general wish to be treated. I also learned that along with working in the office she helps with the gymnastics teams for dance. My children both boy and girl have nothing but good things to say. I would highly recommend Salem.

Really happy with the instructors (kind but encouraging trying new things), environment (clean and friendly) and love their special events (so creative and fun). They are pricier than the Y but the warm water pool and variety of timing options is worth it in my opinion.

Currently trying to schedule a makeup and the popularity of the classes makes it challenging to find one, so try and be sure you can make most of the month's lessons!

My son started here in 2/2021 and we started out really enjoying it. However, in May, he was moved up in his swim class levels, and since then he went through more than 4 different coaches, inconsistent teaching, 2 near drowning incidents with a coach, and being scratched by another child without adults informing us of the incident. We have been really let down by the quality of instruction, so we decided to withdraw him from the program. But they refused to refund us, claiming it is their "policy". While I understand the "policy", it is VERY frustrating to be met with continual let downs on customer care from this business. I don't want my child to attend a place where I do not feel he is safe, receiving actual coaching that challenges him, or that we are being given the care that we are paying for, but they refused to issue a refund. I am looking forward to finding another place that really values the care and teaching of children.

I was a swim student before the Covid-19 pandemic started. During 2020, mid-March Forsyth Tech and a lot of public schools & places closed down but Salem gym kept sending emails downplaying covid because they heard in a podcast that it's still safe to swim in a chlorinated pool full of other people. Seriously, who cites podcast in an email ? This place is run by scientifically illiterate & religious nutcases. I do not recommend it at all.

My child has been going there a month. We don't know our instructor's name, which I find odd. I have no sense or communication about what he's learning (or not.) Tonight was awful, and we listened to a baby scream its head off for over 15 minutes. The child was incredibly upset but continued to have a lesson without her parent (?) I expressed my concern to the management folks, because it was horribly upsetting, and no attempt to calm the child or remediate the situation was attempted. We'll move on and try somewhere else.

The care and skill of the coaches is great. They meet each child where they are and help them gain skills, find confidence, and encourage them in fun and engaging ways.
During a year of complete chaos, Salem has been the very best at communicating changes as soon as government mandates caused the world to shift. They have balanced reason and sensibility with safety. Both their emails and portal keep us updated and give flexibility in scheduling and communicating. The office staff and coaches are always answering any questions or skill thoughts we have careful attention and openness.
The gym is one of the cleanest places we attend, including remarkably clean bathrooms, which can be difficult with high use with children. I see the cleaning staff at work all of the time spraying and wiping down surfaces, doors, and other touchpoints.
Speaking of safety; the gym is well-padded and coaches are high alert during classes and sessions to ensure safety of students.
We are incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to participate at Salem now more than ever. It's been helpful for the physical and mental health of my child to see people, friends, and have her own outlet during covid world.

My daughter turned 5 and now the rule is enforced that she must wear a mask. All of the other kids in her class that are under 5 do not have too. So I bring her to class and I tell her she has to wear a mask. She takes off the mask and hands it to me. My daughter tells me that none of the other kids are wearing masks. My daughter didn’t understand. I get it, It’s policy. But you can have SOME kids wear them and others not. Either they all wear them or they don’t PERIOD. I come to pick her up. I walk inside and a teacher has my daughter pulled aside. I walk up and ask what’s going on. Apparently my daughter made a student cry. My daughter would never.... I mean NEVER make someone cry. My child is so kind hearted. They teacher tells me that My daughter won’t tell them what she said. So I ask Kirah and she told me that she didn’t remember when they were asking her. Then she told me she was just trying to play and told him to jump. Well not only did 1 teacher pull my daughter aside but TWO teachers. So not only did one teacher Harass my daughter to try and figure out what she said, BUT TWO teachers. Just let the child have some fun ??? She was trying to play with the other child. Not to mention with covid they kids can have zero interaction. I also paid for an entire month and only go two classes in December. Apparently they have “make up” days. It would be nice for someone to let me know those type of things. I’m guessing they “sent an email”. Sorry I’m definitely more personal that an email. You can’t pull a child aside and harass them for an explanation for another child crying. They already made Kirah go apologize to the kid. She had no idea what for. But then to have ANOTHER teacher pulling her aside at the end of class. Waist of money for me.

We bring our 5.5 y.o. for beginner gymnastics. I am so impressed with the quality of instruction and personal attention, especially for a group class. Our kid can have a hard time focusing, but the coach is skillful at bringing her back to the task and teaching determination without putting a damper on the fun. This is only her second month, and I can see improvements in her skills already. The office staff has also been incredibly supportive, answering questions and helping find a class that worked for us. The social distancing and COVID decontamination is also on point. The spaces in the gym are wide open, but the staff is still very conscientious about wearing masks and hand sanitizing. Salem Gymnastics and Swim is awesome! Very professional from the time you enter until you leave. My oldest son took lessons at another place in town and it ended in disaster. I had decided not to return there and started my youngest son at Salem. He has been involved in several speed weeks and I have been highly satisfied!! He participated in a speed week last year prior to COVID-19 and I was super satisfied with that experience then. Class size was small and the instructor worked with each child at their own pace. I was reluctant to sign him up this year due to the pandemic; however, after reading their safety plan decided to try it. I am very glad I did!!! They have gone above and beyond to ensure the safety of the students, employees, and spectators. I have already signed my son up for another speed week. They are very organized, thorough, and the instructors are great with the children. I highly recommend Salem Gymnastics and Swim if you are searching for somewhere for your children to take lessons.

My son has taken both swimming and gymnastics. Both have been great experiences. The coaches are wonderful. I like how they offer a variety of times and days for classes. The ratios for swim lessons are very low and your child advances at their own pace.

My granddaughter just finished the Speed Week swim, level 3/4. I highly recommend! The instructors are great with children and very professional. The classes are 30 min. and not one minute was wasted. My granddaughter learned an incredible amount each day. There are goggles & other accessories available for purchase in the office, convenient & reasonably priced. I am very happy with our experience.

My son has been taking gymnastics and swimming lessons here for several years, and he has loved the experience. I have also been impressed by the staff and the overall vibe. It’s fun, but controlled. We will continue.

Our children have been taking swim lessons for almost 3 months and they love them - and we do too! We've had our older child in lessons at other places and these have been the best by far. The instructors are great and the model used is consistent and effective. The warm pool is a huge benefit too.

I enrolled my niece in swimming lessons at this gym. She comes to visit every summer. The staff here is great. I had a small misunderstanding in regards to their policy but the owner Beth reached out to me and was able to solve it immediately. She was extremely gracious and professional.

All and all, I would definitely recommend!

Safety Warning:
I'm not one to complain or write negative reviews but because it concerns safety of children I feel like I have a responsibility in this case. I am a seasoned Mom of 4 children three of which are adventurous boys so I am not the helicopter parent type.
There are many reasons to be concerned if your child is not yet able to swim or keep their own head above water.
At the beginning of classes children are escorted to the pool and then left unattended until their classes start. Even two and three year olds are left completely UNATTENDED!!!

Our 3 year old has gone under the water on several separate occasions. The first class should have been our red flag when the instructor told us our son had gone under the water for a while before they we able to get to him. Since then we have watched our son like a hawk. He has gone under multiple times during different classes. We spoke with a manager and they said they would talk with staff but nothing has changed. There is no hand off of the children from one adult to another. The kids are left to fend for themselves until their class starts and once the class is finished.
During class time the teachers turn their backs while working with other children. This was not so in other swimming schools we have been involved in. Normally teachers walk backwards and forward in the water continually facing the class; never turning their backs once when dealing with small children. It is very concerning to watch through thick plexy glass as your child go under water for stretches at a time of time while the instructor is completely oblivious. We have had to rush in to shout across the pool to get our son from under the water.
We moved from Florida and my older two children had swimming lessons while we lived there and we never felt concerned for their safety. However, at Salem Swim both my husband and I feel that our youngest is not well attended to nor do we feel like he is learning to actually swim. It seems that the main goal is just to get children to enjoy the water not to swim. The reason we enrolled our water loving children was to ensure their safety when around pools.

My son really enjoys attending gymnastic classes here. Would definitely recommend it. Besides, in this place (Winston Salem) is not like there is much more options or things to do. Give it a try.

Our daughters have been going here for almost a year and they love it. The instructor's are great. Our one daughter is in beginner's gymnastics and she is learning so much each week. Our other daughter is in parent and tot class and she absolutely loves it. They both get their energy out. Everyone is very friendly.

We have two in gymnastics, great for the preschoolers, great for my 5th grader. She enjoys her time here. The swimming lessons are my favorite all the instructors are easy to talk to and the kids progress super fast. They practically learned to swim the first month. Money well spent on that peace of mind. Next summer we should be able to relax a little more at the pools and beaches.

Kids seemed to have fun, but we definitely felt rushed. Staff was cleaning up right next to kids, rights after they were severed their food. Not sure if the party was going too long, but there wasn't anyone else in the building besides our party.
