The routes here feel needlessly dangerous, even for the VB-V2 routes. I don’t feel safe climbing here as a beginner.

I've been a member for about 4 or 5 years and am still loving it. Yes the climbing is grea, but as someone who also enjoys yoga and strength training, the membership really hits all the points for me especially on my budget and in a continuously welcome environment. If you're a huge fan of circuit and strength training with the occasional fitness challenge class tossed in between, please check out Christo (Christaan's) class Saturday mornings. He's a PT student and gives an amazing workout. Always ready to hear feedback try something new so you always walk out of there sweaty and ready for the weekend.

My wife and I signed up for triangle rock club memberships about a week ago. We paid the initial fee and everything and we have been happy with our experience so far. We got a email from membership services explaining that we just barely missed a promotional where the initial fee was waived for new members. In this email, they explained that they are refunding us our startup fee since we barely missed the promotion. Super grateful that they took the time to email us and refund us since they were about to run a promotion! If we didn’t know about the promotion, we would have gotten memberships anyways, but it is 10/10 customer service to go out of their way to refund us even though we were willing to pay the startup fee. Great work TRC!

Great experience with a rock climbing class at this location! The place is huge, super clean, and everyone we ran into was incredibly friendly.

Rock climbing can definitely feel intimidating but I felt totally safe and at ease here.

2025 Edit: I was a member at TRC Durham for around 2Β½ years but recently cancelled in favor of The Boulder Garden, which in my opinion offers a far better bouldering experience than TRC. To preface this review, I started here as barely a V1 climber but worked my way up to regularly climbing V7s, and I only boulder. My experience at this gym in terms of the actual climbing experience was largely negative and unsatisfying, mostly due to the atrocious route setting. I wish I could have enjoyed this gym more, but the head setter seemingly won't tell his staff to set fun routes.

Pros (Facilities, Member Perks):
The facilities at TRC are really nice. Besides the climbing area there's also a more traditional exercise room, cardio and yoga rooms, a sizeable lounge, and a couple shower rooms. Members get access to a variety of different classes as well as access to the other 4+ TRCs out there.

Cons (Climbing Experience, Pricing):
First, the pricing here is insane. $95/month for a climbing gym is normal and expected but the $75 "initiation fee" is a scam. Yes, from a business perspective I understand why they do it, but at the very least there should *always* be the option to bypass this fee by paying for a year or at least three months upfront like other gyms do.

By far my biggest complaint about this gym though is the absolutely horrible route setting, which is usually at least frustrating and often even dangerous with the height and roughness of the walls here. VBs were frequently borderline impossible for new climbers that I'd bring here- most of them leaving frustrated because of it.

More often than not half the difficulty of a route will just be from the setters deciding the very last hold and only that hold has to be a crimp, sloper, or any other awkward position for some reason, and you have to decide if it's worth the injury if you fall when you go for it. I wish the different gyms each had different setters because then these complaints might be localized to only one gym, but you can't really avoid it cause it's the same setters at all of them (except Richmond and Fayetteville) with Morrisville being the least annoying since the wall is shorter and smoother.

Overall, my experience at TRC was negative and frustrating. It was incredibly satisfying to cancel my membership and finally have a option for bouldering outside of TRC at The Boulder Garden. Maybe one day TRC will find a new head setter and finally get some decent routes put up, but I'm not counting on it happening any time soon.

As a current paying member at TRC, I am disappointed with the recent change in policy of no longer providing feminine hygiene products in restrooms. Executive leadership is needlessly harming a diverse and inclusive community with performative anti-woke nonsense. I look forward to a competitor in the area, like The Boulder Garden in downtown Durham, being willing to serve the interests of the kind and inclusive climbing community in the triangle.

I’ve been climbing at the Durham TRC on and off for a few years now, mostly on day passes, and attended a pilates class (it kicked my a**, in a good way). It’s a lovely community and the facilities are pretty great. However, ownership has made recent politicized decisions that negatively impact the whole community. The owners’ decision to remove menstrual products to avoid providing this resource to climbers of all gender identities in response to members and staff giving feedback that such a service would be valuable is a disappointing and cowardly move. I hope someone else opens a comparable facility that is more welcoming to all in the community and more receptive to staff and member feedback, rather than imposing the owners’ personal views on an entire community. Not sure if I’ll feel comfortable going back in light of this.

Mid tier climbing gym, barely one functioning sauna between 5 gyms, setting is very hit or miss with a high turnover on the setting team due to lack of a livable wage and health insurance.

They love to taut this line that their politics don't affect their business, however they have made their political stance clear through their recent decision to remove all menstrual products from all bathrooms in retaliation for a recent email campaign pushing for their return to mens restrooms to accommodate trans and non binary persons, during pride month. They refuse to display pride flags but are happy to take our money to expand their monopoly.
Andrew and Mike you should be ashamed of yourselves. To anyone reading this, don't sign up for a membership, don't have your kids birthday here, don't even come in for a yoga class. They do not deserve your hard earned dollars.

This is a great way to get a full body workout and have fun while doing it! Memberships are expensive, but they offer day passes and 10 punch passes that are great options for anyone who isn't expecting to go frequently. They have climbing routes for all different levels of skill, and you can rent all the necessary equipment there. It is important to note that if you are interested in the actual rock climbing (rather than bouldering), you should plan to go in a group of at least two people, since you'll need someone to belay while you climb.

Decent climbing facility but nowhere on the website does it say that you are only able to be lead belay certified if you can also lead climb. I visited with my partner who is very proficient at lead belaying but has no desire to lead climb. We were told that we needed to submit a special request to some random email. We traveled almost 2 hours only to be told she wouldn't be able to take the lead belay test. Never in my 8 years of going to climbing gyms have I been told that the belayer must also be able to lead a route in order to just lead belay.

I wouldn't be as upset if this was mentioned on the website, but one would think lead climbing to not be required to lead belay.

Additionally, every single top rope in the gym presents an inherent risk by utilizing captive eye carabiners instead of requiring tying into the rope. Over time these loops will be worn down and eventually fail unless rigorous inspection is performed.

This is a major disservice to the climbing community in that it does not teach or enforce proper figure 8 knot tying. You are also not allowed to take practice lead falls which is an entire other issue for people looking to climb outdoors.

I like the gym and offerings, the climbing walls are really high and well-done. But, it is a bit expensive, there are limited auto-belay options for those who don't go often, it's sometimes dirty, I pretty much never see staff monitoring the floor for safety, and I wish the owners prioritized inclusivity and community/civic health through their programs to help make up for funding a government which doesn't prioritize those things. I feel conflicted going here.

Triangle Rock Gym in Durham is a climber’s paradise! This modern facility is equipped with everything you could possibly need in a climbing gym. From expansive bouldering areas to top-notch rope climbing walls, they’ve created a space that caters to climbers of all skill levels. The gym is clean, well-maintained, and designed with a welcoming atmosphere that encourages community.

The staff is knowledgeable and friendly, always ready to assist or offer tips, and the training areas are perfect for building strength and improving technique. Whether you’re a seasoned climber or a beginner, Triangle Rock Gym has it all, including rental gear, diverse climbing routes, and even yoga and fitness classes to complement your climbing routine.

That said, I wish they’d expand to Wilmington, NC! The coastal city could benefit greatly from a gym like this, providing a hub for climbers and outdoor enthusiasts alike. A modern climbing gym in Wilmington would be the perfect addition to the area’s active lifestyle scene.

If you’re in the Triangle area, this gym is a must-visit. Here’s hoping we see a Triangle Rock Gym in Wilmington soon!

The facility is wonderful but we are 0 for 2. The first time they charged us entry fees and didn’t tell us that 20 minutes after our arrival 3/4 of the facility would be shut down due to parties and a club. We did attempt to come back a second time and again they did not inform us that within 10 minutes of us paying that they were blocking the back half of the facility off and working their way forward to do maintenance which resulted in the only area for the children to climb to be off limits. Twice we paid for a day pass and each time we were not able to climb for more than 30 minutes.

Although I love TRC-Durham >95% of the time and as much as I appreciate that they open so early on weekdays, it's extremely frustrating to show up on a weekday at opening time (5.30am) to find a closed gym and wait for over half an hour only to drive back home because no one has shown up to open the gym. I hope they're able to find a solution that alerts a backup person to show up if the person responsible for opening isn't able to make it.

I want to really like this gym but I do have some qualms. At least there’s a kilter, nice gym/yoga area and the lead climbing is not bad. But I wish the gym setters would remember that there are decently strong woman climbers who climb here too. Not every set should be dyno, comp-like, mega long boy climbs. Where are the crimpy power endurance boulders at?

Great climbing gym with well-equipped fitness facilities. Super friendly staff too! They have a lot of climbing space and reset pretty frequently, so there's always tons to climb. It's also pretty representative of what you'd find outdoors which is really nice. I only have 2 issues, one minor and one major.

- Minor: on a somewhat frequent basis, no staff member is there to open the gym on time. The gym will open 30+ minutes late. Not the biggest issue but it does happen often enough.

- Major: very unsafe climbing practices and poor climbing etiquette when the gym gets really busy. This is really frustrating and concerning. People walking directly underneath climbers on the wall, crowding the wall, sitting in front of the wall, not being aware of interfering with someone who is already on the wall, kids running around making it difficult to climb safely. I'd really like to be able to enjoy bouldering when it's busy, but I've found that it's just not possible.

Overall a wonderful place but definite room for improvement.

Update: gym opens on time now which is great! But absolutely nothing has changed with regard to the culture of safety in the bouldering area.

I have been climbing indoors and outdoors for a while, and been to a lot of bouldering gyms. I don't usually leave reviews, but since I have been a member here for a few months I felt I could give a fair review since I would hope to see some stuff improve.(TL;DR at bottom)

I'll start off with the things I like about this gym.
The staff is great, and friendly. The person they have who resoles shoes does a great job for a very fair price. The space is very clean, spacious, has a good layout, comfortable thick mats, seating area, fun events, and offers walls for a wide variety of different styles of climbing. The training area is decent, it has standard campus rungs, sloper rungs, and a few hangboards which in all fairness is pretty much all you need. The membership gives you a lot of value because it is good at their other gyms(huge plus). I don't have a kid, and also I haven't taken any classes here so I can not speak on how good the coach/instructors are but I'm sure they are great from the few times I've seen the kids in the gym.

The things I think could be better:
The setting at this gym is not the worst I have ever seen, but it certainly isn't the best. Lots of awkward/not very flowy positioning on climbs under v6 which may in part be due to the setters trying to prevent beta breaks for people good at smearing on the grippy walls(so small pass there). There are weird setting choices on v1 to v3- problems like 1-2 finger pockets on v1's which is just an accident for a beginner climber waiting to happen, and often positioning holds in angles outside the range of motion for someone shorter to grab without worrying about a wrist injury(I'm not talking about gastons). All in all I would say I personally see a lot that could be improved in the setting from the v1 to v3 grades to make them safer for newer climbers. For the v4's to v7 I have climbed, I would say they are mostly great with occasionally some weird hold orientations but you can expect someone at that level to safely handle it or decide not to try it. Also I would say there is a distinct lack of small box size climbing(more cramped positions for someone taller, but this is just a style I like), other than that this gym has about every style of climbing you would want minus crack climbing.
They also don't have a moon board or kilter board, which sucks but isn't in anyway a deal breaker, it is just a nice/fun training tool.

TL;DR
Overall, great and friendly gym with the only downside being some questionable setting in my opinion. Perfect membership pricing for what they offer with it. Handling the covid situation really well and you should feel safe climbing here.

Climbing here is often a miserable experience. It's desperately crowded. It seems like there are a ton of routes, but many of them are five months old and no one wants to touch them anymore. What bothers me the most is that there is no protocol or guidance on how to share the gym. Some people believe that you are engaging in original sin if you start climbing a route when they're on the next route over, regardless of how far their climber is on the wall, TR or lead. Other people will create wildly risky situations, for example starting just after the climber next to them and then leading quickly, so that they would fall on the other climber who's on an interlocking route closely below. It's chaos, and people have all kinds of feelings about it--loudly. I have NEVER seen staff intervene. Scary things happen, and it doesn't feel safe.

On busy nights (most weeknights), only 33-60% (depending on how risky people wanna be) of the routes are climbable because of these interlocking routes, so there aren't actually that many routes. WHY NOT MOVE THE ANCHORS FURTHER APART, HAVE FEWER ROUTE OVERALL, BUT MORE SAFELY CLIMBABLE ROUTES?! This might also help with the age of the routes, which is only going to get worse when they open up the new gym, which will inevitably slow down replacement in each gym. If you don't want to use this solution, could you PLEASE create a protocol for when folks can climb on next-door routes, one for TR and one for lead?! One day someone's going to die.

This is my favorite TRC location so far. The only one I have not yet been to is Richmond, and I am really excited for Salvage Yard to open up.

Quality setting here, great retail area, friendly staff. Nice restrooms/showers available. I always have a great session here. This would absolutely be my home gym if I lived in RDU area.

Fantastic climbing gym! The most important part of a climbing gym is the actual climbing, and they do a great job at setting interesting climbs, both for bouldering and roped climbing. There is also no shortage of boulders and lead routes for me to work on, as I tend to send routes at roughly the same frequency that they reset them.

Been climbing here for a while and it's been nothing but great. Great route setting. Lots of fitness options and classes. The staff are friendly and helpful. I highly recommend it for anyone looking into starting rock climbing or if you're looking for a gym in the area.

This place is gross (literally covered in BLOOD) and continues to neglect health and safety. There are rarely staff in the top roping area. They sometimes have someone seated near the entrance, but they spend 80% of the time scrolling on their phone. It's terrible. Worst of all? THE BLOOD! The blood that COVERS THE WALLS AND HOLDS. Regularly my friends and I discuss calling the health department, and I will frequently hear similar conversations happening between others around me--I am not alone in feeling totally icked by this place. In past reviews, folks mention that the walls are textured and scratch them. You barely touch them and you'll bleed... and the blood gets on the walls and holds. The blood is never ever cleaned off. I used to inform staff when I would see large groupings of blood smears tracing up the wall. They would nod and smile but no follow up actions occurred. It took four months for me to realize NOTHING was ever going to be done. The walls are just accumulating blood smears. It's clear the managers don't use the gym or talk to people that do--it's so poorly managed in so many respects. But can you at least supervise the ropes area and clean up the blood? That would make it easier to ignore the mediocre routes and huge crowds. This review was initially to blocked. I have carefully rewritten it with supporting facts and descriptions. I also don't appreciate that TRC is trying to block accurate reviews.

If a Victorian family had a child, handed it off to the wet nurse, had it raised by the nanny, and then sent it off to a boarding school, the child still wouldn't be neglected as hard as the route setters neglect the auto belay room.

That said, great bouldering and top rope.

TRC Durham is good. I hadn't been on the area since it's was built. But it's a solid addition to the TRC family. It has plenty of bouldering. Maybe a little less top roping than I'd like but a good variety of routes and walls. I wish they had autobelays on routes other than the short walls. I like to use the autobelays as a warmup. Great place to climb!

I’ve been with your gym since it opened. A few things have gone downhill but I’m happy to change review rating once they improve.
1. Please clean more. It’s pretty gross in there. Membership is too high for a dirty facility. I used to see it cleaned a few times a week. What happened?
2. Please hold camp counselors responsible for camp kids. I should not have kids climbing under me. I’m waiting for a hurt kid and a lawsuit.
3. The weight room is unusable during the hours of back to back fitness classes in the morning. At a regular gym you can switch out but the classes take over for hours straight. This isn’t new but I really wish there was a rack or two reserved for people who can’t do the classes.
4. Limited yoga offerings. Nothing M, W, F before 9am :( I was hoping this would pick up after you all bounced back from the construction. Kinda a wishlist item. I now pay for yoga elsewhere.

The last two items are me expecting too much? It’s fair that climbing is top priority and the weight area and yoga are nice to haves. But the first two items are important and I hope they’ll be addressed.

I like this gym. With the classes provided and the climbing in general I haven't minded paying for a membership. I would say though that TRC in general struggles with its beginner culture. While there are things that they provide that suggest they are helpful to beginners such as the discord and a few of the classes I wouldn't say that I have had much experience feeling welcomed in those places. TRCs culture really makes it difficult to be comfortable as a beginner which isn't necessarily the fault of TRC. However it would be nice if they took a more active approach in encouraging people who are just getting into climbing.

Phenomenal facility! I came in on a day pass to climb boulders - I didn't get on any ropes/autobelays. Boulder grades and styles are impressively reflective of outdoor grades/styles! Not sure what outdoor climbing feels like in NC (I climb in OH/KY), but I would venture to guess it feels like what TRC has to offer. Setting feels like it fits me well as a 5.7 (+4 ape) climber. The large variety in style makes it difficult to compare grades, which can be good for an experienced climber but may be challenging for a beginner. But beginners need not fear! This is the largest climbing facility I've been to in a long while. Well staffed, well maintained, all around great experience for crushers and newbies alike. I'll be back as soon as my skin recovers!
