About the Club

We specialize in clients over the age of 40 who want a personal training environment to get healthier and stronger, get rid of those achy joints, and feel more energetic.
Although we love to work with everyone, we are best suited for people who face the following problems:

- They are intimidated by the typical gym.
- They have are not sure what to do for exercise that is safe and appropriate.
- They have an injury or nagging pain that they want to get rid of.
- They don’t like big group classes, fancy yoga studios, or high-energy settings where it’s just “go as hard as you can go.”
- They feel sluggish and lack energy.
- They don’t want to commit more than 2-3 days a week in the gym because they’re busy.

I have never been an athlete, nor have I ever really enjoyed exercise. After years of intermittent exercise and a bad fall, I decided to get strong. I tried FE on a suggestion of a friend. I'm so glad I did. The instructors are kind and supportive. All I have to do is show up. Even in just a short time, 3 months or so, I am stronger and able to be more active. Woo hoo!

I’m obsessed with FE. I have been training here for about 2 months, and I already feel so much stronger and like my body is moving more smoothly. I am doing single leg / arm exercises at FE that I would never be confident enough to do on my own. If you are someone who wants to improve your form and do a full body workout - this is the place for you. It’s not financially accessible for everyone because it’s still a small space with a lot of 1 on 1 time with trainers, but if you can afford it I highly recommend.

I relocated to Columbus from Chicago, where I had been working with a 1:1 personal trainer at a woman-centric gym. I had a lot of ideas in mind about what I wanted here that would fill that hole.
Fitness Evolution has been all of it and more! The coaches are all great & supportive, pushing you as they get to know you but never too far. I love love love the sense of community I'm building here. I walk around with a huge smile on my face because Fitness Evolution is my happy place! Overall, this was exactly what I was looking for in terms of personalized, inclusive training for people nervous about gyms. Detailed pros and cons (price was the big one) for me laid out below. It was about a year ago that I left FE but i forgot to share this at the time; note that things may have changed since I left.

PRO
Unlike places like Club Pilates, the waitlist works pretty well but it wasn’t difficult to regularly attend the same classes without even using waitlists. There were a few classes that worked really well with a 9-5 schedule.

CON
The cost was significant for me for a place you can’t go to outside of scheduled classes. I totally get this is cheaper than one on one training and the quality is extremely high, but when friends and family asked me how much my training classes were, every single answer I gave was met with shock. While FE staff is very friendly and easy to talk to about membership, the absolute cheapest I could make work was the longest commitment. If you come from a two-income household this would be more reasonable, but as a one-income single person, it was not sustainable for me. There were weird moments for me personally, because there were specific “bring/tell your friends” promotional weeks, but all my friends are low-paid teachers and could never afford this.

When I started to have some medical expenses and more recently a new car payment, there was no way I could keep paying for this (FYI they were very kind and willing to let me out of membership early).

PRO
This is a very high quality training experience with kind, personable trainers who are educated, tactful, and observant about who is in their class. For every class, the trainer prepares specific weights and routines that are personalized for every single person signed up. The equipment/space provided and sanitizing expectations are great, down to the number of weights, the individual stations, and the timers.

CON
There were more (simple things!) instructors could have done to create community. While people were never rude to me, many times when I went to a class with an instructor for the first time (new class time/new instructor for me) — and this includes my very first class ever — the instructors didn’t facilitate/encourage introductions to the regulars, despite knowing I was new to that class. The class then felt very cliquey, because everyone else knew each other and had inside jokes. I’m an introvert and definitely struggled with that dynamic.

CON
Though I arrived appropriately early, many times I found I still would be the last one to class — to the point where everyone else had almost finished warmups. That’s supposed to be the point of including the warmup in the class time! I would then be behind the others the entire workout. It’s not a competition, but it was difficult to not feel that way sometimes.

CON
I felt that the onboarding didn’t fully click with me for the progression of the sequences in a class, or maybe that was my first class’s instructor’s fault. I did not understand at all the A then B then interval sequence back and forth, and was extremely confused as to what to do after each one for my first two-ish weeks. This rectified itself over time but I didn’t even fully understand what I didn’t understand.

PRO
There are supplemental (mostly paid) opportunities to take advantage of, from special classes to nutrition help to various video content pieces.

PRO
This is a small business, and the owner is very personable and easy to talk to about membership questions or concerns throughout your time there. Even though i didn’t feel intentionally welcomed by the other classgoers, the instructors themselves were all very friendly and genuine.

All around quality studio. Solid, well thought out fitness programming with wide variety of modifications for any injuries/limitations and your fitness level. I feel like I have a customized workout, while in a group training setting. All trainers I've worked with have been great. Supportive and encouraging. They do what others struggle to deliver: creating a welcoming/non-intimidating environment for a novice! The team, led by Melanie, get what it takes to keep us engaged. I still marvel at the instructors who have individualized, updated plans for each of us in the group each session. I'm not a traditional gym kind of person but have tried various gym memberships through my lifetime because I value my health and want to take care of my body. Fitness Evolution is by far my favorite. I love their philosophy and focus on functional strength training rather than physical appearance or weight loss (although those are natural byproducts of exercise). The owners are super nice and down-to-earth, and I love the group training model where I get personalized attention and freedom to go at my own pace but still benefit from the energy of the group and our collective goals. I genuinely enjoy my morning workouts there, they are chill and laid back. The music is always good (and at a nice low volume), and the temperature is always perfect (never too cold or too hot). I take Alexia's classes and really appreciate her style. Although the financial commitment is considerable, it is very worth it. It actually creates more accountability than a $10/month gym and motivates me to go and get my money's worth. The fact that you can just show up and not have to think of what to do, how many reps, is my form right, etc. makes it worth every penny. If you're considering trying out a new fitness program in 2025, I strongly recommend Fitness Evolution.

My experience at Fitness Evolution has been nothing short of wonderful. I have been a regular for 6 months now and everyone at the studio has been very supportive and encouraging. When they say they are not a typical gym in my experience it’s true. As a complete noob to the gym, I felt at home right away. I have been attending small group training at Fitness Evolution for the last two years and I absolutely love it. The environment is positive, encouraging, and weights are catered to our needs. It's a true community where our focus is not on "performative" workouts but well-designed for what our bodies can take at an incremental pace. I had a shoulder injury in between and the trainers fixed my sets to address the injury and help me recover slowly but surely—it sets the tone for progress not perfection which helps us unlearn toxic ideas of what fitness means. Anyone in the Columbus area who is looking for a gym, I'd like to recommend Fitness Evolution Studio.

I have been going there for a couple years. The trainers are great and knowledgeable. You'll get a personalized workout plan and they'll modify exercises to accommodate the unique ways in which your body is broken. (Carpal tunnel in my case.)

The biggest thing that separates them from the pack for me is accountability. If I miss a scheduled workout without calling it in, I get a polite follow up asking where I was. I hate admitting I was too lazy to show up, so that gets me out the door. That is a huge value for me.

I have been very satisfied working out at FE. I’ve dabbled in workouts in the past and have been on a health journey for the past few years. Strength training has felt overwhelming and like something that would be really boring, hard, and I wouldn’t be good at. I turn 70 next year, and except for a few lapses, physical fitness has been part of my life since the 1960s. I mention that because I don't attend small class training because I HAVE to, I do it because I WANT to.

The staff are all gentle & super motivating, the physical environment is new & clean, there is a sense of community not found at your large franchise gyms and they work to keep that community feel. The instructors know everyone by name and their physical strengths/weaknesses, and use that knowledge to guide us during each session.

I couldn't recommend the small group training here enough! For me the greatest thing is the knowledge of the trainers and their ability to quickly and easily change exercises to help with overcoming former injuries and to avoid re-triggering them as I build up strength. I have been in PT before, and I can tell that Melanie really knows the body and training! The small groups are a great size and workouts are tailored to you individually while being with the group doing similar work, so there's motivation when you see others working hard too. All of the trainers have been great to work with.

Six months in and I could talk for hours about the ways my life has been changed thanks to FE.
The biggest change though, has got to be my joint strength and mobility. For my entire life I’ve had knee pain due to an old injury from childhood.
I’ve certainly worked around it, learned to live with it, and had to change my life in ways I never wanted because of it.
I’ve tried other programs, gym memberships, personal trainers, but everything always felt like a “one size fits all” method, and that did not work for my needs.
Finding FE was a breath of fresh air. Not only were they thorough in my entry evaluation, asking about any hindrances I might have, or past injuries, but extremely transparent about their whole process and goals as an establishment.
They really care about giving you long lasting strength and healing in the right way for YOUR body. Everything is catered to your needs. Just this week, I was still able to do a modified workout with an injury. They took great care to make sure I was able and comfortable the whole time.
To say I’m grateful for what they’ve done for me is the understatement of the year. Not only do I live without pain, but I trust my body again, and for that kind of result I don’t think I could ever thank them enough.

I've been attending Fitness Evolution for about 8 months now and am still loving it! In that time, I've grown more committed to my health and I've gained lots of skills and muscles that I didn't know I had in me.

I will be running my first half-marathon this spring, which has been a goal of mine for quite some time. I'm very thankful to Melanie and the coaches at FE helping me reach this goal, and I plan on sticking with them as I continue my distance running practice.

I'm not a "gym person" and I've always struggled with consistency in my fitness. Fitness Evolution has really changed all of that for me. I now love going to the studio regularly, and I have accountability from trainers and other clients to help keep me on track.

Fitness Evolution emphasizes establishing a positive mental attitude as a stepping stone on the track towards achieving fitness goals. This is key for me as I struggle with mental health issues and need a positive and caring environment to feel safe.

I love that the classes are small, and that I am guaranteed individual attention when I need it. I can go at my own pace, and I feel more confident using equipment the correct way (without putting myself at risk of injury). Melanie and all of the trainers go above and beyond to ensure that every single client's personal training is specific to their needs and lifestyle.

Living a healthy lifestyle and maintaining physical fitness can be a struggle–especially if you're doing it all on your own, but Fitness Evolution makes it easy (and fun)! All you have to do is show up.

I have been working out at Fitness Evolution for several months now. I have been impressed to say the least. First, the Cleanliness! During a Pandemic, the idea of going anywhere outside your home feels risky, but Fitness Evolution makes extra effort to follow any and all protocols to keep me safe. Secondly, the friendliness and professionalism of the staff is first rate. I have felt like a longtime friend ever since I stepped foot in the gym. My workouts are always very meticulously planned, and if necessary, they have no problem modifying workouts for my needs. I feel so Grateful for all the staff at Fitness Evolution and look forward to continuing to work out there for years to come. Thank you!

I had been wanting to add strength training to my life for years but didn’t know where to start, so I never did. A friend told me about small group personal training at Fitness Evolution and it has been exactly what I wanted. I love showing up and having the trainer tell me exactly what to do so I don’t have to figure out what weights or what exercises equal a full body workout. I feel motivated when I increase my weights and am inspired when I see other people using heavier weights than me.

Melanie, Jessica and team are fabulous. I have never had a gym membership before - I occasionally did some aerobics but never felt comfortable in a gym. After the age of 50 I definitely need some strength training, so I started trying to do some at home - I was kidding myself! Then I saw a post about Fitness Evolution and their Covid protocols - it sounded safe and had small classes. Bonus - it was close by! I have now been a member for 10 months - I feel stronger and healthier than I have in years. The workout is tailored to my abilities and adjusted when needed for body aches or injuries. They monitor progress, adjust your form and cheer you on. There are classes at all times of the day with only 8 people per class. Scheduling classes is easy. Absolutely every person I have met there - coach or client - is positive, supportive and kind. This is not a competitive environment - just a place to get strong and healthy on your own terms. I highly recommend you check out FE.

I joined about 3.5 months ago thinking I would just do the 3 months trial they were offering at the time, then quit. Honestly, I was assuming I wouldn’t get that much out of it. I’ve gone to personal trainers in the past and have never had a great experience. But the location was convenient and it seemed like a different approach than what I’m used to so I went for it. My assumptions were immediately proven wrong! I love the small group training! I get the attention and personalization I need with a touch of social interaction. I don’t feel like I’m being watched and judged by some kid who just finished school. I feel like I’m being monitored and coached by someone who knows and loves what they’re doing! The environment feels safe in multiple ways. They follow strict sanitation protocols. They always make sure I’m doing my exercises with correct form and weight so I don’t hurt myself, and they check in regularly to see how things are going. I’m so glad I joined and I think I’ll be around for a long time.

I have been working out at Fitness Evolution for years. The studio is spotlessly clean, with all the COVID-19 precautions in place. The instructors are Fantastic, working with each client to improve their physical fitness. Each client gets and adjusted routine and weights to help grow at a safe rate. For each class, every participant stays in their own 12 x 12 area, reducing the likely hood of contact. And the instructors are very good at encouraging each client.

Going to Fitness Evolution has been the best thing that I’ve ever done for myself. I have always hated working out and have felt so anxious about starting at a gym. From the first moment I showed up they were all nothing but welcoming and supportive. This is the first time in my life that I have looked forward to working out, and I go at 6am to do so because I enjoy it so much. I shared with them that I injured my ribs about a year ago and they have worked with me to make sure no exercises make it worse while also making sure to remind me of different things that will help to prevent future injuries. As someone who is very anxious about COVID, I feel so safe being there, with everyone in masks the entire time, equipment cleaned frequently and distancing strongly enforced. I can’t rave about this place enough—I just love it so much.

Melanie and the entire fitness evolution staff do an amazing job of providing an environment that I feel safe and supported. All of my classes are catered to my body and fitness level. I’ve been coming for almost a year and definitely notice the results! Not only are they great with communication and flexibility, but they also take the health of their clients seriously. The gym follows strict sanitation guidelines, practices safe social distancing, and conduct temperature checks. There are only a few people in a class, which is great because it’s not overcrowded like orange theory classes or other group fitness classes that I’ve done in the past. They even do a virtual “in person” class where they will still design a workout catered to you and you can “attend” a live class from home complete with live instruction from your trainer! I’m a nurse and I feel extremely safe at fitness evolution, they put all aspects of my health as a top priority!

The trainers are so encouraging and positive! In all of my 50+ years, I've never been involved in any kind of "work out" or strength training program. As a dental hygienist, I have problems/pain in my shoulders, back, and neck. While my fine motor skills are on point, my gross motor skills are sorely lacking (by my own admission, I am uncoordinated and weak)! But Melanie and Jess are consummate professionals! They challenge me to keep me motivated, all while making sure to taylor the exercises to my capabilities so that I don't get discouraged! I leave the studio hot, tired, and smiling! I can't say enough positive things about the gym and community. The group format itself is perfect for my needs- focused on building strength and mobility, as well as methodically building healthy habits- and just enough focus, tailored guidance and support, and accountability as to not overwhelm. Alot of encouragement without any of the shame. I love that I only have to show up, warm up, and follow instructions. The owner is a spitfire and very dependable. She is constantly looking for ways to improve everyone's experience and sense of safety, especially during this time of health and safety challenges brought about by Covid.
