I tried yoga many times, but it wasn't until I went to Green Tara Yoga that I finally LIKED yoga. At Green Tara they teach Iyengar Yoga, which is a type of yoga that really allows you to learn each pose and gain so much body awareness. All the instructors have such a deep knowledge of not just yoga and mindfulness, but of anatomy and physiology. I am a physical therapist and I find that when I send my patients to Green Tara Yoga that they get better faster and then are more likely to continue to move in the right ways. I feel so grateful I found Green Tara yoga.
Go to a class. You won't regret it!

I have enjoyed attending the mixed level yoga classes led by Amy and Karen. I took advantage of an introductory discount and bought a new pass for classes recently. I have a variable work schedule so I usually attend one evening class a week. I would love to do more but once a week yoga practice within a group setting is what has to suffice at the moment.

I have been taking yoga with Karen for over ten years. She works hard at pointing out for every individual student where to work on. Every class is different, never boring, always challenging. All her students benefit from het excellent teaching skills.

Karen was my first Iyengar yoga instructor. She’s excellent at discovering the best cues to help us refine our form. One of the best instructors I’ve experienced.

I have been practicing vinyasa for over 10 years now. Recently I started to feel like I had reached a plateau in my yoga practice, and I had stopped progressing.
I signed up for a 8 week course at Green Tara Yoga looking for more one on one guidance, not fully knowing what Iyengar yoga was all about.
I am so glad I took this step. My yoga teacher is Karen, who not only is incredibly knowledgeable but also a great instructor. I feel Iyengar's philosophy and technique, with major emphasis on mindfulness and achieving the integrity of the pose are the perfect fit for the current state of my personal practice. I would recommend Green Tara Yoga to anyone who is looking to improve their Yoga practice (which for me means breaking a lot of bad habits) or to anyone who wants to start practicing yoga, for in my opinion, this is the best way to start.

Green Tara Yoga is one of Cleveland's gems! Karen (as well as all of the folks who teach at Green Tara) is a gifted, insightful, inspirational teacher. Her wealth of knowledge, ability to communicate, demonstrate and clarify yoga, make her one the best yoga teachers I have ever studied with. I have had the pleasure of learning and growing with Karen for over 10 years, and I can honestly say it has been a transformational experience for which I am grateful!

I decided to try Green Tara Yoga 4 years ago when I was struggling to find relief through physical therapy from chronic neck pain. I had no previous yoga experience, and I was immediately drawn to Karen's direct, clear, and passionate teaching style. She customizes her classes to the abilities and needs of each student, which led to immediate improvements in my physical state and awareness.
I've taken weekly classes ever since, including ones taught by all the teachers at Green Tara. Each has distinct teaching styles that are tied together by Iyengar yoga's focus on precision. I can't recommend this method and studio enough for physical well-being and personal development. Each week, I look forward to the challenging and therapeutic work taught here.

I’ve been studying and practicing yoga at Green Tara for 4 years now. Karen and all the teachers are fantastic - knowledgeable, professional and fun! The instruction is deep but not ponderous, precise in the best way, and always inspiring.

I began taking yoga with Karen when she first opened her studio, about twenty years ago, and since then I’ve rarely missed a weekly session. Karen’s precise instructions and methodical demonstrations ensure correct alignment and increase flexibility, posture, balance, and strength. Equally important is the benefit to mental health. I routinely leave class feeling refreshed and energized. Karen’s expertise is rivaled only by her enthusiasm for her subject. Her classes require and reward concentration, but her seriousness of purpose is always lightened by her cheerful humor. As both a teacher and a continuing student of Iyengar yoga, Karen exemplifies the joy of life-long learning. She has trained skilled, thoughtful teachers, who share her commitment to yoga and to the wide variety of students who come to Green Tara Yoga.

i can't overstate the value I've received from Karen's clear, careful, joyful and accurate teaching of yoga. She manages to notice each students particular need and responds with an adjustment that enables any student to benefit from every pose.

I have been taking weekly yoga classes from Karen at Green Tara Yoga for upwards of twelve years. Her classes can be hard and demanding but not beyond her student's capabilities [classes are offered at different levels]. Karen is probably not the right teacher for someone who is looking for a casual exercise class. She teaches in a serious matter of fact manner because she is conveying often complex directions which demand serious, specific language - but there is also always laughter somewhere included. You can get hurt doing yoga and she takes this aspect very seriously. Each class offers a newly thought out sequence and this takes time and work. Karen gets to know all of her students as individuals with different abilities and commitments. I consider myself very lucky to have such a great teacher within driving distance.

I'm 29 years old and a few years ago I tried a yoga class at work. I enjoyed myself but I found myself wanting to understand what exactly I was doing (which asana [pose] is what? Why am I doing this, this way? Is this supposed to feel easy?).
Several other types of yoga classes and yoga-YouTube videos later, I still hadn't found what was looking for until I was lucky enough to stumble upon a book called Light on Yoga by BKS Iyengar. It was a book that answered literally all of my questions and more.
Mr. Iyengar stresses, in the book, that you can try all of the asanas yourself but you really need a guru (teacher) to help show you the proper way to get into the poses to really access the benefits while protecting yourself from injury.

This is a wonderful group of experienced professionals. Each teacher definitely comes with a different personality and I'd recommend going on different days to find the instructor that suits you best.
Come open to learning, open to hard work and open to inner growth. This is not a class where you will burn sage and listen to the sounds of the forest in the dark. This is truly a classroom. You will get out of it as much as you put into it. I find it to be incredibly rewarding and I intend to be a long time student.

I took several classes with Karen Allgire in November 2019 and found her teaching to be excellent. She explains things very well and has a quick eye and responsiveness that bettered my poses immediately. As an iyengar yoga student of several years I really enjoyed working with her and if I lived in the area I would be a weekly student.

I have been studying with Karen for over 22 plus years. Yoga is vital to my overall well being and karen is an excellent teacher as are the other teachers that teach here. They are patient, careful and enthusiastic. As I age (mid 70's) yoga and the teachings that go with it make the difference in flexibility, strength, and vitality. I feel better when I do yoga. I love Green Tara. I owe my good health to yoga and chiropractic. I am one fortunate person. Thank you!

What follows is probably TMI, but here goes. If you don’t choose to read any further, just drop in Green Tara Yoga for one or two classes and see if it’s right for you.
My orthopedist suggested taking yoga to increase my flexibility and strengthen my bones. So last spring I began Slow Flow yoga at another studio. I had taken nearly fifty classes. However, I never really felt confident that I was doing each pose correctly, but rather merely moving through the sequence of poses to keep up. And based upon the class format, I knew there wasn't enough time to get individual instruction during class.
Someone suggested taking a private lesson with Julie Tamarkin. Julie is an instructor at Green Tara Yoga. The private lessons opened up a whole new world of yoga for me. Iyengar Yoga. Yoga that emphasizes the detail, precision and alignment in each asana. I decided to drop into a level I class at Green Tara Yoga taught by founder Karen Allgire. I was hooked.
I've been taking Karen’s level I classes for over three months. Each pose is carefully explained and precisely taught before you attempt it. I don’t feel rushed and now feel I’m doing each pose correctly to achieve the maximum benefit. First the pose is demonstrated by Karen (or whoever is instructing the class). Then Karen goes around the class helping each student. She’s extremely knowledgeable, disciplined, sensitive to any injuries, and compassionate. She has been to B.K.S. Iyengar Yoga school in India at least three times.
I believe we are very fortunate to have an Iyengar Yoga instructor with Karen’s advanced Iyengar Yoga credentials in our community. Especially considering there’s only an estimated one thousand certified Iyengar Yoga instructors in the United States.
I'm not a purist or a yoga snob. I don’t feel you can only do this yoga or that style of yoga. But I do know this style of yoga is exactly what I need. And believe everyone could benefit from practicing Iyengar Yoga.
Iyengar Yoga is challenging, exacting, and brings clarity to each asana. I’m becoming more flexible, stronger, gradually improving my posture, and my outlook on life. With six young grandchildren, I need to do everything I can to be at my best for them, my family, and myself. I plan to continue Green Tara Yoga and keep it part of my health regimen for the rest of my life.

This is a tough review for me to write. I'm not a troll and have debated doing this...but I kind of wish someone would have done it for me.
For me, yoga is more than just a physical work out, it's a state of mind. I took Karen's classes for three years, learned a lot of really great technique, and moved out of Cleveland.
Karen knows her stuff, which is why she gets good reviews, but she is not well. She's an unhappy person and it comes across in her delivery and treatment of others. She's just...mean.
When I started taking Iyengar in my current city, I realized how much less abusive it has to be...There's no reason to browbeat your students, these aren't dance lessons.
Overall, I'm torn, because she has such an amazing working knowledge of Yoga. Having said that, knowledge and technique was not all I wanted from Yoga, I wanted guidance from a teacher who truly lives in a Yogic manner and doesn't get in my face if I'm not doing the trikonasana correctly.
The teacher I currently have has just as much knowledge as Karen, without all the weirdness.
Don't take my word for it though, see for yourself. There are some other decent teachers there too.

Karen impressively demonstrates a deep knowledge of Iyengar yoga, anatomy and movement. This style of yoga surpasses all others I have studied. As a physical therapist committed to attaining optimal posture with patients and for myself, I respect the meticulous attention to detail in her skilled teaching. It is invigorating, educational and never tedious. Muscle strength and length, spine, leg and arm joint alignment, stamina and focus are all developed in an integrated and challenging way. This practice is a gift to myself.

I have been going to Green Tara Yoga for about 2 1/2 years. I have some very specific challenges and Karen has been so helpful, thoughtful and successful in making yoga a very important part of my health and welfare. Karen can have a class full of students and still make the experience fee very personal. She challenges us, supports us and inspires us throughout the whole class. I have also taken workshops from other instructors at Green Tara Yoga and each one has been great!

I’ve been studying at Green Tara since 2000. Iyengar yoga builds strength, flexibility and balance by using props and careful sequencing. Iyengar teachers like Karen are certified in the method, so you know they won’t tell you to do anything that might injure you. Karen and the other teachers give everyone helpful corrections in every class, which is what I like best about Green Tara.

Green Tara Yoga has been my go-to place for yoga instruction for many years. While I am not currently taking classes (due to my schedule), the instruction has always been consistently excellent. There are classes for every level of experience, and within each class, the instruction is personalized to the level of each individual student. Karen (with whom I have had most of my experiences as a student) is a truly special and outstanding teacher, able to take into account injuries, illnesses, and other limitations to help each student progress in a safe manner. Whether you are trying yoga for the first time or are experienced and want to improve your practice, you will not be disappointed.

A friend invited me to try a class a Green Tara -- eight years ago! I've been continuously registered for a weekly class ever since. I feel lucky that I got started with Iyengar yoga, because the teaching style offers a logical progression and focuses on correct alignment. Teachers are supportive, encouraging, and challenge us to take on poses we might feel are beyond our abilities -- I may even master handstand this year!
If you decide to try Iyengar yoga -- commit to a whole session. You'll be surprised by your progress!

Green Tara is an outstanding place. Unlike other types of yoga that I tried, Iyengar Yoga is a style that I loved as there is quite a bit of instruction and it is fun. I also like that there are different levels of yoga so when I was starting there, I wasn't playing catchup like in some other classes. Karen (and the other teachers) are great at creating always new classes and challenging me to improve. While I rarely post reviews, I wanted to do so for Green Tara it is a fantastic yoga studio. Try a class or a Saturday workshop. There are even free classes about every two months.
