After being a head coach at the collegiate level for 12 years, Nelson Schorr decided that he wanted to impact more than just the 14 players on his team. So after looking over the local basketball landscape, he decided that there was a void that needed to be filled. Hoop Guru was formed with one AAU basketball team and now has steadily grown to over 28 AAU teams, leagues, AAU tournaments and our calling card of quality instruction at an affordable price.
Hoop Guru is located in The Courthouse, a 24,000 sq. ft. training facility that has 3 full sized basketball courts with 13 baskets. The Courthouse is the largest privately owned basketball facility in Northeast Ohio. This space is ideal for players to work on their skills and get out on the

Would not suggest this league unless you are willing to take the reigned and lead a team. The guy in charge is unresponsive and disorganized. We signed up and paid to be in a league here and ended up with 4 players on a team and no coach. I messaged and suddenly another player showed up
But still no coach. The parents were out in the position to step up and coach games on the spot. I ended up there was no communication on if games were cancelled and he was never present throughout the league. I will say the staff that ran the training sessions were great and the flexibility of those worked for us.

Saw a sign when we were at Ignite Brewing and thought we would check it out. Walked downstairs and were just looking around. A guy looks at us and says βcan I help you?β with a lot of attitude behind it and a disgusted look on his face like we were bothering him. It was very off putting and caused us to immediately leave.

If you are considering hoop guru for an AAU team - run away fast. My son played on the 6th grade team and we paid the full amount and they invited several players who werenβt required to pay. After two games, they had to cancel the season and only offered to refund us half the amount. We did reach out to Nelson, but he refuses to answer back.
There is no communication and there is little organization.

Iβm leaving this review to prevent other kids from having the same experience as mine. Do NOT participate in their AAU league for elementary age kids. My son and his team are having the absolute worst experience right now. We were lied to and this is a complete money grab.

Ok.
After reading the reviews... they are interesting. This place has a lot of potential yet It's still functional for what it is. Some of the reviews are unrealistic.
I'd been looking at this place for a while. After a visit and facilities tryout, I pulled the trigger and got a membership for my son.
We use the shooting machines of which at least one is always open. Usually there is an open court for us to work out on. There are 3 small courts in the back to work out on. It'd be nice if they were full size half courts but hey. If you're looking for a place to bring your kid to work on fundamental basketball skills then this is the place. No, it's not perfect but it's functional for putting in work. The staff is friendly. Sometimes they do get missing fora but from the front check in area but they're usually doing something else. During push times when games are hosted there I wish that there was more attention to keeping people's kids away from the shooting machine area and small courts which are reserved for members. Having little kids running around you while you're working out is an annoyance but I can't knock the facility staff for that. That kinda falls on the parents. I do feel that that area should be strictly reserved for members only. All in all, if you want to get better, this is a great place to go.

This place is old and way out of date for a basketball center. The courts have some weird tiles on them instead of a real court, the balls don't bounce normally on it. The hoops are loose and vibrate at the lightest touch, and there is nearly no barriers between the courts. What little there is, is full of holes. Several times balls from different courts effected play on our court, and vice versa. I really hope that our league ceases using this place, it is by far the worst I've seen in this area. The owners need to take some pride, and put some money into this place. There are courts in Strongsville that are much better, and down in Cloverleaf. Even the bathrooms are not clean, and they smell like an outhouse. I highly do not recommend using these courts. Having a brewery and an axe throwing place, where kids are playing is a poor choice as well.

This basketball facility has 3 full-size courts and can be set up for volleyball. They also offer leagues. They do have bleachers all around the basketball courts. These are three step seating. Restrooms are upstairs.

The Swish 365 would be great if we could get it to work. Everytime we go the tablets to set Swish 365 up it will say no wifi connection. It takes us about 15-20mins into our session for it to finally start working but only for a little bit until we lose connection again. As expensive as Swish 365 is you think there wouldn't be any issues.

My son has played in every league from 5v5, 3v3 and AAU. We love the competitive leagues they offer. We also have taken advantage of the free skills training sessions we get as part of being on the AAU team. This facility really has it all.

AAU is overpriced. Weβve done it in other states and this price is what youβd expect from a Nike sponsored team, or you would at least get uniform, shoes, & bag for that price.

I have been to other Swish facilities and this is by far the worst. The floor is simply unsafe. During the tournaments I have attended I have seen players of every age and ability violently fall due to poor floor conditions. At one point a game had to be stopped because an air conditioner was leaking on to the floor. Mind you it was 30 degrees outside. I hope that changes are made before someone gets injured. Players, referees, coaches and parents all voiced these same concerns while we were there.

Played a few tournaments there. Slippery rubber tiles that they clearly donβt clean make for a dangerous playing surface. In any given game at least one kid slips and hurts himself. Bleachers are falling apart to the point where spectators will start getting hurt too. They gladly take your money though.

Had my kid tryout for Hoopguru AAU travel basketball team. So they have you pay a fee to tryout, but then all of the teams are already pre-determined based on last years teams. During the 5 on 5 tryout games, my kid sat on the bench for more then Half the time while all the kids that the coach βknewβ played the entire time. The βcoachβ never even learned my kids name. Then there are supposed to be βevaluatorsβ there to give each child a grade/evaluation. I never saw anyone there watching the kids or taking notes (they said there would be) It was an obvious money grab, shame on HoopGuru for this sham tryout. Then I asked for feedback on my child and to see the evaluation (which I still think never happened) and they never replied to my multiple emails and texts. Awful customer service.

This league is a disgrace to organized basketball. For the high school boys league, a regulation ball could not even be provided for the evaluation. They had to use a girl's basketball. A regulation high school ball had to be borrowed in order to play some games, because the basketballs provided by the league were flat. There were kids who participated in games that were not even enrolled in the league. The league is basically an open gym with referees. If you think that this is a basketball learning experience for your child, especially on a high school level, that is a total misconception. If you want your child to learn anything about playing defense, rebounding or being a team player, please do not waste your money on this league.

I just wanted to address some things brought up in a different review. My son has been involved in both Hoop Guru and SMAC. Both are AAU clubs present in Northeast Ohio. He settled on SMAC last year only because some of the practices were closer to home and 3 of his friends were involved. SMAC also has a $10 tryout fee. When his SMAC team played against Hoop Guru, SMAC got killed.
This year my son decided to try Hoop Guru and we have been happy so far. They had professional Refs for the scrimmage/tryout so it was less scrummy. Nelson, the owner and director has a sarcastic personality that I think is hilarious.
Also, for a different perspective on the $10 tryout fee, my son got to play organized basketball with a professional ref for 90 minutes on a freezing cold january day. That's a pretty good deal.
Mid season update.
We still love it. My son has gotten much better and his coach is really knowledgeable and fair with playing time. He is learning a lot about the sport and he is having fun.

Classic AAU club gone wrong. Guru favors those players that attend their facility year-round instead of the players that can play regardless where they develop in the off-season. Which make their so-called AAU tryouts laughable. The Guru evaluation staff joke and carry on all throughout the tryout event, sometimes personally with those kids they already know. Some kids at the tryout were not given the same amount of evaluation time as others, mainly because it's so unorganized. The staff would get confused with the simple rotations of teams on a total of 2 full courts, leaving some teams not playing in consecutive sessions. Makes it hard to imagine what was actually being evaluated when the evaluation program itself was so unorganized. And if you can't evaluate players, how can you succeed? Check out their success as an AAU club...not much there to write home about.
This place is all about the revenue. I was told Guru fees went up 10% this year...for what reason no one knows. They also charge $10 to tryout...only club I know that does that. Guru will also host many of the "AAU" tournaments on your schedule AT Guru. And these are hardly AAU caliber facilities or staff. It's basically a big garage. Guru courts are made of rubber tiles with dead spots galore. They'll use the same staff that supposedly evaluate the players at their tryout event for their tournament referees! And add in the subpar coaching that Guru hires and it's a mess. These coaches couldn't even run plays that break the press. That's right, AAU teams that can't break the press.
Last, but definitely not least, this is a self-proclaimed basketball organization yet they just built...wait for it...an American Ninja Warrior obstacle course at their garage-like facility. And then they marketed it to their AAU teams. Guru will also pitch you on how they can help financially prepare you to send your son to college. This place is so slimy it's funny. But if you don't believe me, ask Guru how their teams perform. Or go there.. You'll see. I'll be checking them out too but from another court and with reputable club. IF they actually attend a tournament outside of their own that is!
