The coaches are friendly and knowledgeable, and they really helped me improve my strength training. I would definitely recommend Starting Strength Columbus to anyone looking for a weight lifting gym :)

I’ve been training at Starting Strength Columbus for about three months, and I’m genuinely amazed by the progress I’ve made. When I started, I just wanted to get stronger and learn good technique, but I’ve gained far more than that. The coaching is top-notch. Every session is hands-on, with constant feedback to make sure I’m lifting safely and efficiently. They’ve helped me work through some nagging injuries in ways I never could have figured out on my own, and I’ve continued to make steady progress.
What really stands out is the people. The coaches are knowledgeable and encouraging, and the other members are down-to-earth and supportive. It’s a positive environment where everyone is working to get better. Worth every penny and highly recommended to anyone serious about getting stronger or improving their overall health.

I have been training at the Philadelphia Starting Strength gym but was in Columbus for a visit. Jarret and the clients in his training session welcomed me as a guest. Jarret was a pleasure to work with and his instruction was detailed and easy to understand. If I lived in the Columbus area, I would definitely want him as my trainer!

I always struggled with painful hips and shoulders from working as a mechanic. I started training on my own and quickly hit a wall, So I decided to get a membership to Starting Strength.
The first thing I noticed is the sense of community the gym has built up. Starting strength isn’t where you go to wait for a leg press machine, or watch a guy doing 20 sets of curls right in front of the dumbbells you want. You’re greeted with smiles, and encouragement by coaches and members who only want to see you succeed in your goals, and share the same excitement as you when you reach them. I have yet to meet someone as passionate about their craft as Coach Pete
I started off training at 150lbs with the goal of treating hip and shoulder pain, as well as getting bigger and stronger. As of today I weigh 200lbs. Everything in my life has improved. Joint pain is gone, I’m the strongest I’ve ever been, and I carry myself differently, because I feel different.

I can’t say enough great things about Starting Strength. The trainers ensure you are lifting correctly and have the knowledge to help you meet your goals. It is great for long-time lifters and even those like me who have never lifted before.

I’m a woman in my mid 60’s and I’ve been active all my life. But after a series of minor injuries from fast-paced gym classes and over enthusiastic trainers, my patience with the one-size-fits-all approach of most gyms had reached a breaking point! I was done. But as I worked outside in my garden a couple summers ago, I noticed that the bags of mulch were getting heavier and harder to drag around the yard. I knew I had to do something to at least regain the strength that had already begun to slip away. When I saw the ad for Starting Strength Columbus, I set up an appointment for a free intro session. That was the best decision I could have made. Moving through the day to day physical challenges of life requires strength. Not the pumped up bulging biceps kind but the whole body hold-your-bones-together kind. At Starting Strength I found a place where bodies and minds are trained to tackle hard things. It’s a barbell only gym where you get personal attention from a knowledgeable coach in a small group setting. You learn proper form so the lifts are safe to do. I found an encouraging community made up of all types of people. And we are all focused on the same goal- becoming a little stronger than we were the last time. Soon many of us were moving more weight around than we ever thought we could. The every day challenges of life have gotten easy enough for me now that I don’t think twice about carrying those mulch bags around the yard anymore (2 at a time)!

I have been a member at starting strength Columbus for over 3 years. At the age of 70, strength training has been such a rewarding experience and exactly what I need for this next phase of my life. One I wish I had started earlier in life for sure. It’s a huge part of my physical and mental health. The coaches and the owners are amazing. They help me focus on my strengths and weaknesses and I’ve accomplished more than I thought possible. The members are always supportive and I’ve made some great friendships. It doesn’t matter where you’re at in your wellness journey, starting strength can get you started or take you to the next level.

I've been to Starting Strength Columbus two times this year, visiting while on business trips. Megan, one of the owners, has been great to work with and very accommodating to meet my needs as a visitor. Both times I've worked with coach Jarrett. He takes the time to ask questions and to understand what's going on with each lifter individually, and then tailors his coaching to fit the individual. In the short time that I've spent with him he has given me helpful pointers to improve my technique and answered my programming questions. Both have helped me progress. I'm extremely happy with Starting Strength Columbus!

I have started this Starting Strength gym in March 2025. Almost I spent more than 5 months in this gym.
I really enjoyed this facility with all trainers.
Particularly I liked to mention my personal trainer Mr. Jarret Beck, who is teaching me based on my requirements in every aspect.
I am very much grateful to Jarret and his training methods as well as his behaviors to every fellow in gym.
I like to continue in this Starting Strength gym class.
Overall this is a great place to enjoy life.

SS Columbus is the best place to get stronger and build confidence. When I joined three years ago - after a hip replacement and could barely manage stairs—now they’re no problem. The coaches truly care about every individual. Huge thanks to Pete, Jarret, Patrick, and Paul!

I thoroughly enjoyed the squat and deadlift camp I went to at Starting Strength Columbus this past Saturday! Coach Jarret responded to my emails before camp and assured me that working with beginners is their specialty! I was welcomed to camp and was able to squat 52 pounds and deadlift 100 by the time I left. The individual instruction gave me confidence that I was safely and correctly performing each move. Coach Jarret gave cues that someone like me, who has zero barbell experience, could follow. Thanks for the great camp!

I've been an online client for 3 years now. The service has been great. I'm bigger and stronger than I've ever been. Jarret (my coach) gets back to me within 24-48 hours after I upload my results. He helped me dial in my technique so I haven't had any injuries in the gym for 2 years now. Definitely recommend.

Physical fitness and exercise have always been a part of my life. After being made aware of the importance of weight training especially for seniors, I had the opportunity to meet the owner of a new gym opening in Dublin 3 years ago. Pete Yeh explained how the Starting Strength program works to address building strength/muscle. Individual coaching and goal setting have helped me build muscle and strength, improve balance, learn about nutrition and benefit from being in an encouraging environment. Contact the gym for more information. You are missing a golden opportunity.

I can’t speak highly enough about my experience or the coaches at Starting Strength.
I joined in December 2024 after a lifetime of struggling to put on muscle and dealing with persistent back and hip pain from my job. As usual for me, I had some pain after my first session and considered not coming back, but both the coach and the owner followed up with me, encouraged me to continue, and gave me tailored, lighter exercises to build a solid foundation. Over the following weeks and months, the team worked with me at a pace that made sense for me. Today, my back pain is essentially gone, and I’m building muscle and seeing definition for the first time in my life.
The coaching here is on another level. The team is professional, highly trained, and genuinely invested in each member’s development. They meet regularly to discuss member progress, so if one coach helps me refine a lift on Monday, any coach I see later in the week already knows and continues the work, making the entire experience seamless and personalized.
It’s not just about lifting, either. The coaches take a holistic approach, working with you on nutrition, sleep, and lifestyle to help you reach your goals inside and outside the gym.
I recommend this place to everyone I can. If you’re even thinking about trying it, go for it. They’re doing something truly special here.

Starting Strength Columbus is an outstanding gym, and trainer Patrick Crawford is a true standout. Patrick has been incredibly attentive, knowledgeable, and encouraging. His coaching style is both technical and approachable—he knows exactly how to break down complex movements and help you improve with every session.
Patrick’s ability to spot and correct form issues on the fly has made a huge difference in my experience. He’s patient, professional, and genuinely invested in helping members get stronger safely and effectively. Whether you're new to lifting or experienced, Patrick creates an environment where you feel supported and challenged. In short, Patrick is a sculpted Adonis; all men who walk in the gym want to be him, all women want to be with him.
The gym itself is clean, well-equipped, and filled with a welcoming community. The Starting Strength method works, and with coaches like Patrick leading the way, it’s easy to stay motivated and see real results. Highly recommend!

I had an excellent beginner coaching session at Starting Strength Columbus. Employee Patrick Crawford patiently and professionally instructed me on lifting techniques tailored to my personal strength level and skill level. Other staff members contributed to my session in a team effort. I wish I had this instruction when I was younger. It showed me how to build useful strength with very low risk. I highly recommend it.

I got to a certain point in my training with Starting Strength that YouTube videos, online forums and reading the StartingStrength book by RIP wasn’t enough. So I put my ego aside and actually got some one on one instruction from an actual Starting Strength Coach.
A little over a two weeks ago, I just so happened to be heading South for vacation and would literally be passing by it so I jumped on the opportunity and made the trip to this gym in Columbus, OH from my home town in Cuyahoga Falls. I arrived into town about an hour early and I received a text if I was able to come in sooner and that was an obvious yes so that worked out great.
I walk into the doors and I’m greeted by Coach Jarret(I believe that is how it’s spelled) and another gentleman that was putting in the work but I do not recall his name. Everything was clean, organized, smelled good and was professional.
After a brief introduction of ourselves we got right to work. We went over my form in all the basic lifts with the exception of the bench as time didn’t allow as I tend to ask a lot of questions. He was more than willing and capable of answering all of them. His cues, explanations of the lifts and any corrections needed were clear and effective. Most importantly, in my opinion, he was actually capable of demonstrating the movements as well. We discussed the importance of proper gear such as lift shoes, a good lifting belt and chalk. We also touched on some pointers about nutrition and diet on the program, such as a decent starting point on what to consume as well as some cues on when to maybe increase or decrease what you’re consuming. Tracking your food intake and how you feel physically over all will help make this much simpler.
The day came to an end and time flys when you’re having fun. More questions to bug him with we answered at the end of the session then we closed up shop.
Over all my experience was fantastic. The day was pretty lay back and fun but stayed on track. The gym was clean and professional as well as easy to get to. Jarret was very knowledgeable, concise, and seemed to genuinely give a shit that you was there. I highly recommend coming here if you can.
Shout out to Megan as well, she was the first person I spoke to in regards of questions and scheduling an appointment. She was more than willing to help, easy to talk to and went above and beyond. As the first point of contact, she will ensure you are taken care of and make you feel confident that you are picking the right crew to have you back.
The whole crew there is awesome.

Priceless!!…..defines the value of training at Starting Strength Columbus….as a 63 year old man who has never taken “lifting seriously”, I have learned and implemented more in 3 months than anytime previously. Following Jarret’s (very patient and encouraging) instruction/ programming, I have achieved strength and mobility gains , I didn’t think possible.
Also, reading “Starting Strength and The Barbell Prescription “ and with my precious wife’s blessing , I am on a lifetime journey of strength!
The consistent/ precise instruction, the encouragement (puuusssh, hips hips, drive !!) and fellowship with folks I didn’t know 3 months ago……is priceless!! I’m “pumped “ to be along for the ride!

I’ve been training at Starting Strength Columbus since February 2025, and I can honestly say it’s been one of the best decisions I’ve made for my health and strength. From the moment I walked in, the coaching, programming, and supportive environment stood out.
Coach Jarret is an outstanding coach—knowledgeable, attentive, and incredibly encouraging. He knows exactly how to challenge you while making sure your form and safety are always top priorities. His feedback is clear and actionable, and he truly takes the time to tailor the program to your individual needs and goals.
The Starting Strength method has helped me gain confidence under the bar and consistently get stronger, both physically and mentally. The gym community is also fantastic—everyone is focused, motivated, and supportive of each other.

I have joined Starting Strength, at Columbus just about three months ago and super impressed with the program, coaches and the gym environment. I have never lifted weight before and was hesitant to try. However, several articles on how strength training can boost your physical and mental health interested me. I mainly train with Jarret and he is excellent, along with Pete and other apprentice coaches who I train with occasionally. Trainings are tailor made for my need and strength level with detailed attention to form and perfection each and every day. Atmosphere in the gym is very friendly, non-judgmental and welcoming. Truly enjoying my experience at Starting Strength, feeling strong and hoping to get stronger with time. May I suggest that do yourself a favor and start strength training and I whole heartedly recommend this place for your journey to healthier you.

I have had the pleasure of visiting Starting Strength Columbus gym twice now while traveling for work. As a regular member of the Houston/Katy Starting Strength location, I was excited to see how this gym culture compared and I was not disappointed.
Coach Jarret ran the class and somehow managed to put up with my banter (which is impressive at 5:30 in the morning). He kept the vibe fun and focused, making it way easier to get moving and actually enjoy the workout.
If you are in the Columbus area and looking for a serious strength training gym with an emphasis on the foundational barbell movements (squat, deadlift, press, and bench) Starting Strength is hands down THE place to go. As the name implies, it is the place to start your weightlifting journey in an approachable and friendly atmosphere and accepts all, women included! You will find experienced, professional coaches who are invested in your progress and who uphold the standards of the Starting Strength method. Highly recommend!

Joined 2 years ago on the recommendation of a friend. I wanted to stay injury free while hiking and rucking, as well as generally living life on my own terms. I can say without reservation that the team at Starting Strength Columbus has helped me achieve this.
Over the last 2 years I’ve gone from 6’ 1” at 150lb to 195lb, and significantly increased my lifts. One of the things I love about the gym is how Coach Jarret incorporates my outside activities and goals into the training program. During the winter we lift more and heavier, and in the summer I get to hike more while still seeing progress in the gym.

I like that we get constant feedback on form so we can lift but do it safely. Working out with others can be really nice socially as well. The trainers are knowledgeable and patient, adapting workouts if needed.
I've notice recently it's a lot easier to lift heavier things. Not only because of getting stronger, but the form carries over into everyday activities that require moving heavier objects. This makes it easier to leverage strength and lessen injury.

I'm a tall guy, and my high school football coaches didn't exactly give good barbell squatting advice for my body composition, which lead to me getting a back injury that had persisted all the way until I joined Starting Strength.

I injured three levels in my lower back 13 years ago and have felt stabbing pain or a burning sensation every day since and periodically experience flare ups that make bending or walking almost impossible. I have tried numerous alternatives from injections to radio frequency ablations to physical therapy, and nothing helped in any significant way or lasted more than a few months. I was ready to have spinal fusion surgery when my colleague recommended I try Starting Strength as it helped his lower back problems. Feeling like I had nothing to lose and contrary to all of my doctors’ advice, I tried it and I’m glad I did. In the 3 months since starting at Starting Strength, my back has felt better than it has in over a decade and my strength has increased. While I’m not pain free, the level of pain has subsided substantially and the frequency of flare ups have decreased. Pete (the owner) and his coaches are very knowledgeable and truly care about your health and wellbeing. Positive results will come if you follow the program, are consistent, and put in the work. Whether you are trying to rehab an injury like me or are just looking to increase your overall strength and fitness level, I highly recommend giving Starting Strength a try. Before joining Starting Strength, I used to go to the gym on my own, lifting weights without any clear direction. However, the past few months at Starting Strength have completely transformed my approach to training. I’ve learned the immense benefits of a structured program, and I’m now lifting weights I never thought possible.
Not only have I become stronger, but I’ve also noticed significant improvements in how I feel on a day-to-day basis. My energy levels are higher, my posture has improved, and I experience far less fatigue and soreness than I used to. Everyday tasks feel easier, and I find myself more confident and resilient in both physical and mental challenges.
A few weeks ago, I had the chance to see just how far I’ve come. My brother, cousin, and I entered a dead hang challenge. They’ve been gym-goers for much longer than I have and were always stronger than me. The challenge involved hanging from a pull-up bar, but with a twist—the bar was much thicker than usual, around 5-6 inches in diameter, making it extremely difficult to grip. To make it even more challenging, the bar would occasionally jolt and rotate, testing our grip strength.
My cousin went first and held on for 30 seconds. My brother followed, managing 40 seconds. When my turn came, I was a bit nervous, thinking I might embarrass myself with a lower time. But to everyone’s surprise, including my own, I held on for 57 seconds, outlasting them both.
I’m thrilled to have found Starting Strength and can’t wait to see how much stronger I’ll become. A special shoutout to the owner/coach Pete and coaches Ricky and Jarret for all their support and guidance.

I was a competitive distance swimmer when I was younger and always relished in what my body could accomplish with my strength and endurance. As I got older, life, career, education and everything else got in the way and feats of strength and endurance were no longer a priority. I had wanted to get back into a strength program but was afraid of hurting myself as I’d been out of practice. Since joining Starting Strength, I'm gifted with discovering what I’m capable of while in the care of talented and supportive coaches. It’s been incredible to see how my desire to get stronger has bled into every aspect of my life. I joke with friends that I’ve become a “gym bro” worrying about my protein intake and getting enough sleep. Starting Strength and the coaches here bring an invaluable environment and wholistic set of skills to help you achieve what you hope lifting will be for you. The timeslot scheduling makes it easy to be consistent with showing up while still providing the flexibility when life isn’t as structured. The time and work I put in at Starting Strength has become my favorite part of my week and I am stronger and more stable because of it.

My Fitness Journey at Starting Strength Columbus -
Nearly three months ago, I embarked on a strength training journey at Starting Strength Columbus, and the results have been nothing short of astonishing!
Physical Triumphs: My stability, mobility, and strength have improved rapidly. Now, I ascend and descend flights of stairs with grace—no handrail needed! Everyday tasks like hoisting groceries, lifting hefty items, and stowing my carry-on in overhead compartments have become effortless.
Joint Magic: Despite osteoarthritis knocking on their doors, my joints—the unsung heroes—have rallied! My shoulders, hips, and knees move more freely, and pain has taken a backseat.
Community Vibes: The workout environment is a sanctuary of positivity, devoid of judgment. Social connections thrive, and I’ve relished learning from fellow members.
Coach Jarrett: Friendly and adaptable, Coach Jarrett actively listens, tailors instructions, tweaks techniques, and ensures every member feels seen and supported. His passion for helping members achieve personal goals shines through.
Kudos to Owner Pete and the Coaching Team: They’ve created an environment in which strength training is a communal experience, with camaraderie at the forefront. Starting Strength Columbus isn’t just a gym—it’s a life-changing journey.

Starting weightlifting was my goal for myself at the beginning of this year, and I couldn't have picked a better gym to begin my journey. Jarret does a great job at programming my sessions to help me consistently progress. I started out this year fat and weak. Now, I'm fat and strong.
Edit 7/21/24: I've been making a deliberate effort to lose weight over the past several months, which naturally means some strength and muscle loss. If I had just been working out on my own without a coach, I wouldn't have known how to properly accommodate for these changes and probably would have given up on lifting. Jarret has done a fantastic job adjusting my programming to account for this to keep these losses at a minimum. This kind of personalization of programming is what I come to Starting Strength for.

Everything about Starting Strength Columbus -- coaches, people, programming, atmosphere -- is why I'm coming up on my one year anniversary. And I'll keep coming back. I don't feel too old, I don't feel too weak, and I don't feel out of place.
Coach Jarret (and all of the coaches) works with me on my own goals at the speed that works for me. I'd recommend this gym to anyone of any age.

I joined starting strength because I have never been particularly strong, and I know from experience how important it is to do strength training from a metabolic and bone health perspective. It's completely blown me away in terms of the quality of the training; I never thought I would have FUN lifting very heavy weights, but here we are. The coaching is highly personalized to your own physique/build. I can feel myself getting stronger with every session. The only relative downside is it's definitely raised my standard for weight lifting (tried going to a planet fitness when I was out of town one week and the rigidity that comes from doing machines just can't compare to doing movements that are suited to your body)! The price and time are SO absolutely worth it, from the strength and health I can see now to the long-term investment I'm making to my health for a lifetime.

Finding Starting Strength in Dublin (Columbus) has been great!
So much of what I had read the past couple of years regarding aging indicated that concentrating on strengthening is much more important than aerobic exercise. After turning 70 last December and having shoulder surgery the previous year, plus an "iffy" bone density, it was time to get more serious about my strength and conditioning.
I tried gym memberships before and never stuck with them as I hated the atmosphere and often felt overwhelmed.
Starting Strength is a small facility and the personal attention I have received is amazing. To get started, they really took care to understand my medical history as well as any current pain issues. My coach, Jarret, is so patient and makes sure I do things correctly, giving me cues to assist with learning proper technique. Another plus is No Contract to sign!
I highly recommend them to anyone, but especially to ladies who think that lifting weights is a guy thing! It is fun and rewarding!

I'm a 74-year-old man with no athletic background and 45 years working behind a desk. Ten years ago I realized I had to train to stay mobile, compensate for a weak back and shoulder, and avoid getting frail in old age. I set up a home gym and followed the Starting Strength book. I made progress, but kept hitting plateaus and roadblocks that led to long gaps and trouble getting back on track.
I joined Starting Strength Columbus five months ago and immediately saw the benefits of good coaching: they set up your personal program, modify it as needed, and coach every rep, with adjustments I would never figure out on my own: sometimes a quarter-inch change in grip turns a painful failed lift into a pain-free personal best.
After five months, I can stand long periods with much better posture and no back pain, lift heavy objects over my head with no shoulder impingement (never could before), and move through my day confident that my body will do what I want. I've lost two inches on my waist, gained the same on my chest and shoulders, and I'm still making progress.
If you give this program - and these coaches - just three months, you'll see and feel a real improvement in your quality of life.

Jarret and Pete are wonderful. My two brothers and I showed up for an assessment, and we needed a lot of coaching! Jarret and Pete patiently got our form and technique right and helped us get a great start in our strength training journey. I am super impressed and will continue to work with them every time I am back in Columbus visiting family.

Jarrett is a wonderful coach. He is patient, supportive, and listens. Genuinely seems to care. After 3 months I was able to easily help my husband move a 100 lb rack that I struggled with last year

At age 41 I started at Starting Strength Columbus 15 months ago with no real experience with weight lifting (except for injuring my back a couple times and giving it up before even really started) and having not done any exercise for several years. It's been life changing. I am lifting weight I never thought possible. I've put on 15 pounds of muscle and completely changed by body composition. My wife has said things like, "You are so big, who is this guy? I never would have thought this was in you when we got married." She also has referred to it as a "glow up"; I'm not sure what that is but I think it's positive. Most importantly is that I've been consistent and stuck with it and that is 100% due to the great coaches, environment, and community of people at the gym. Highly recommend.

Joining Starting Strength Columbus in July 2022 was one of the best decisions I've ever made for my health! I've spent decades focused on how my body looks and I feel so much healthier now focusing on what my body is capable of.
The coaches at Starting Strength are great -- Jarret, Pete, Ricky, and Patrick are very encouraging no matter what your abilities are. They coach each of your barbell lifts and sets, so you get continual guidance and can be sure you are moving correctly (and avoiding injury). I'm always learning (or relearning) something at the gym, and find that my lifting is more effective with their coaching than when I try to do it myself.
The coaching has paid off! I started out squatting with only the bar, progressed to 140 lbs in 2 months during my novice linear progression, and this week (18 months later) I squatted 205 lbs for 2 sets of 2 (and I am only 4'11" tall). For deadlift I've progressed from 100 to 230 lbs, bench from 55 to 107.5 lbs, and my press increased from 32 to 80 lbs. One of the best benefits is that because of weight training I finally have the shoulders and butt that I wanted all along without having to constantly obsess about dieting!
I recommend Starting Strength to anybody who wants to do something good for their health and who is willing to do some work for themselves. As a health care provider I know the importance of exercise for overall health, but it wasn't until I learned more about strength training specifically that I've come to understand how important it is for longevity and metabolic health as well as bone density. Also it's never too late to start (my fellow members range in age from 15 to 82) and everyone there is extremely welcoming and supportive.

****UPDATE****
It’s coming up on two years since I joined Starting Strength Columbus. I have accomplished things I would have never imagined through training at this gym (such as adding 300 lbs to my squat).
In addition to gaining strength, I gained the confidence to compete in powerlifting/strengthlifting meets which have been a total blast. I’m grateful for everything Coach Jarret taught me and look forward to working with Coach Ricky this year. The other clients are supportive and my recommendation to join this gym remains unchanged.

Highly recommend this gym for anyone looking to get stronger through personalized coaching in a smaller setting. Starting Strength Columbus owners Pete & Megan have hired an extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and professional staff. Coach Jarret, Coach Bruce, and Adam genuinely care and work with you no matter your skill level. It’s a very welcoming and supportive atmosphere.
I’m really glad I joined and I’m very impressed with my results so far.

I never imagined myself in a gym dedicated to barbell strength training, but I've now been training at SS Columbus for over a year. Previously, my fitness routine revolved around walking and jogging, and I believed it was sufficient. Training here has shown me the benefits that strength training can bring to a woman's life.
Jarret stands out as an exceptional coach who carefully designs all my workouts, taking into account my personal goals. The coaching has been incredibly beneficial, especially since I was initially very nervous about starting strength training. I was convinced that I might injure myself or somehow end up looking "bulky." However, nothing could be further from the truth.
I can only give SS Columbus an extremely strong recommendation. I now feel confident in my own body - what more could someone ask for? If you're on the fence, just come in and check it out.

I realized as I aged that I had lost a great deal of strength. Started here 3 days a week. Although it has been less than a month, my improvement is already significant. I love the atmosphere. I am lifting far less weight than anyone else but I feel nothing but encouragement from the coaches and the others in the gym. It is a community.

As a 41 year old who has never enjoyed the idea of weight lifting, starting strength has been the perfect gym for me. There are no mirrors on the wall, no fancy machines, and no pretentiousness. There is a coach on site at all times helping you with your form and developing and individual workout plan with one goal in mind, helping you get stronger. The owner is named Pete and his passion for helping others is evident the second you walk through the door. This is not CrossFit, this is not your big box gym. Starting strength is an intimate community that is accepting of anyone who wants to improve their health and their life by becoming a stronger version of themselves. I hope this review helps to motivate one person to stop by the gym and see if it is a fit for them!

I can't say enough good things about this gym. The coaches are exceptional and guaranteed to get you stronger than you ever thought possible. There are people from all walks of life and I have met some truly inspiring individuals here that motivate me to be a better, stronger and more resilient version of myself. I had previously heard of the starting strength method prior to joining and was hesitant to join at first. I decided to invest in myself a bit and wished I had done so a long time ago. I've learned so much valuable training and lifting knowledge from all of the coaches here that I will carry with me. 10/10 recommend!

Wish I would have found this gym 30 years ago! I am in the second month of the linear progression and made more progress in one month than I have ever. Best gym ever! Everything you might need in terms of equipment in a clean well ventilated gym. Focused on building strength which is important. Knowledgeable and attentive coaches plus a nice social vibe for all age groups. At 77 years old, I got to squating 195lbs in the first 7 months and progressed in all areas from there. Leaving because of conflicting family issues but hope to return.

I started training at Starting Strength Columbus with Bruce as my coach in November 2022. Before joining I was a habitual yo-yo dieter focused on a target body weight, but at my intro session Bruce advised me to focus on getting stronger instead. He is amazing, I don’t even have the words. After a year of 90 minute sessions three times a week, my body transformed without counting calories. I lost 25% of my body weight while adding significant muscle and frankly… I look cooler than ever. I work full time and have a busy life as a mom– but the coaching and training model help drive me to consistently show up.
In the past I tried other gyms, but the personal training I received wasted my time on treadmills and machines without producing meaningful results. My experience at Starting Strength has taught me the fundamentals of barbell training, and how to keep improving by increasing the load on the bar. Seeing muscle gain finally helped me understand why focusing on body composition rather than calorie restriction is more effective for fitness goals.
Coach Jarret, Pete (the owner), and the apprentices are also passionate and knowledgeable. The people here are friendly and supportive, and we all celebrate each other's success. If you need help getting healthier this is the real deal. The coaches will teach you the safe and correct way to do every lift and you will be the strongest you’ve ever been.

I joined Starting Strength Columbus over the summer and have been training 3x a week for the past 3 months. My progress has been phenomenal! I've nearly tripled the weight I can squat and deadlift in that time and have even had to move up a shirt size as my shoulders have filled out.
The coaching I've received from Pete, Jarret, and Bruce has been unmatched by any previous exercise program I've tried- Nothing beats the instantaneous feedback you receive from having a coach right beside you for each of your lifts. And yet, in spite of their expertise, Starting Strength's coaches have always made the gym a welcoming and comfortable environment for beginners like myself.
I'd recommend Starting Strength Columbus to anyone in the central Ohio area, beginner or otherwise, looking to develop a solid foundation for their own strength training journey.

I rarely do reviews good or bad and something has to be exceptional if I do. StartingStrength gym in Columbus qualifies for that. I started my twin teen daughters there this past summer because they were both doing sports in school and wanted to get stronger. I wanted to get them started right with good form and programming to build a solid lifting foundation. They loved StartingStrength gym from day one and increased the weight they could lift in all four of the primary exercises StartingStrength focuses on - squat, deadlift, bench press and overhead press. Compound movements that hit all the big muscle groups. I was impressed with the coaching, the facility and the overall atmosphere. Pete, the owner, made us all feel right at home and is very passionate about fitness and the StartingStrength method. He was always willing to take time to talk and share knowledge about the training, fitness and its impact on health and living your best life through lifting!
The coaching is first rate and not just some pumped up guys they pulled off the street. The coaches go through some very rigorous training and are extremely knowledgeable about lifting, form, programming and how to get you your best results - AKA get you strong.
The gym atmosphere is very welcoming as well. Everyone my girls met there were very friendly and talked to the girls as peers in training and not just as kids. The support and encouragement they showed toward the girls was wonderful to experience.
If you want to start lifting, improve your lifting or just lift in a gym that is laser focused on building strength then StartingStrength Columbus is a place you should check out.
They earned my review which isn't an easy task and I highly recommend Pete and all the crew at StartingStrength Columbus!

I’ve been aware of the Starting Strength Method since 2018. However, I’ve always been a solo lifter lifting in my garage. During a work trip to Columbus, I decided to get a form check using the free drop-in session.
I met with Jarret Beck and Peter Yeh in the morning, and we briefly discussed my past lifting history. Jarret and I worked on all the basic lifts (squat, press, deadlift, and bench press. I'd recently (past month or so) made several changes across the 4 lifts to try to better meet the Starting Strength model. Jarret was great, and he was certainly able to help me verify my recent changes. I also really appreciated his cueing style. Jarret was incredibly generous with his time. The free session is technically 30-min, but I was there for about 2-hrs. I enjoyed working with Jarret and engaging with some of the regular members. I highly recommend trying them out to get the experience of hands-on coaching at a Starting Strength Gym. All in all, I had a very positive experience with Jarret and the Columbus - Dublin gym. It was exactly what I expected being a follower of Starting Strength. I recommend anyone new to SS or anyone who hasn’t experienced hands-on coaching to give them a try.

I seriously loved my time at SSC. Pete, Jarret & Bruce are fantastic coaches & I loved all of the people that I got to work out with each session.
Having a consistent coach and group of people made for a supportive and encouraging environment to get strong in. Generally gyms are intimidating places for me, but the people here are rooting for each other and there’s no judgement, no matter where you’re starting out at. I started lifting this past January & moved to a new city in July, but put a ton of weight on the bar in that short time span. I had never lifted before becoming a member, but Jarrett really helped me to understand the lifts & made sure I had good form so that I could keep adding weight safely.
I’ve never been stronger & would absolutely recommend SSC to anyone who wants to get stronger too.

My experience at Starting Strength was outstanding and it exceeded my expectations. Everyone was friendly—from the other lifters, even to the dog! Bruce & Pete were very welcoming and knowledgable.
