The Spot Athletics is not your normal Upper Arlington or Grandview, Ohio gym. It's a private fitness center specializing in personal training.

Whether it's losing weight and toning up, strength training or speed training for athletes, our knowledgeable coaches will help you get to whatever goals you have.

We have many levels of training available. From 1-on-1 training to small or large group training to training entire teams, we have an option that will fit your needs.

Founded by world champion powerlifter and former University of Kentucky strength coach, JL Holdsworth, The Spot Athletics is recognized worldwide as a leader in personal training.

Can’t speak highly enough of this place. Great environment for any one of any fitness background or level. Billy and Levi are both incredibly knowledgeable and fun to work with. They are very quick with an alternative exercise if something hurts an injury or just doesn’t work for me. I am a distance runner, and they are aware of my goals outside of the gym and are very supportive, sometimes even giving me extra exercise. Cale and Anna are newer coaches, but they are both great to work with, very kind and intentional. I would (and do) recommend this place to anyone, I’ve loved training here.

I’ve been coming to the Spot since November and have really enjoyed it! I was looking to get back into lifting after playing a collegiate sport and missing the “team lift” atmosphere. A fellow field hockey coach recommended The Spot and it’s a great fit! The coaches (I’ve mostly worked with Billy and Levi) are super knowledgeable and make each session fun. They make sure you know exactly what to do, no matter your lifting background. The other members are also great. I like the small group atmosphere because you get personalized feedback, but can also socialize between sets. I always look forward to the sessions I sign up for even at 5:45am :) I would highly recommend The Spot for anyone looking to lift more!

I wanted to add that Cale has been a great addition to the coaching team. He's been working with the 5:45am group and has brought a new perspective that's been great to learn from. He has a good sense of humor and offers great feedback.

I’ve been coming to the spot for about two years or so and I love it! I started off not knowing to lift properly and the coaches really helped getting me to understand the basics before throwing on heavier weights. I’ve been working with Coach Billy and Levi for awhile and they have been fantastic. They’re motivating and approachable people which was great for when I was just getting started. Working out at The Spot Athletics is exactly like having your own personal trainer. Cole, my group trainer, is always there to adjust my form and ready with an alternative movement if my shoulder hurts. He’s able to coach a large group of clients with ease and be attentive to everyone. All the trainers at The Spot are fantastic! My sons started coming here last summer to work on speed and conditioning as well as overall strength training. Cale is a great trainer and the junior/senior classes are well run and the class size is perfect for the kids to learn and grow as athletes.

Of late, they have been taking Billy’s class on Friday and he’s incredible. He really hones in on the small details and gets the best out of both of them. Anna is a new instructor and is great as well, has a lot of enthusiasm and attention to detail as well. Claire is a rock star for communication and getting their accounts set up. Highly recommend for all ages, from youth to the adults, the instructors care about their members and want them all to get the most out of their experiences.

I've been training with Billy at The Spot for almost two years now, and he's been fantastic to work with! I started here after struggling with knee pain while running and was unsuccessful treating it with physical therapy. Since I started training at The Spot Athletics, my experience has been nothing short of amazing. I was looking for a place where I could get back to lifting like I did during my collegiate athletic career and feel motivated, and The Spot has been perfect for that. The classes are very challenging, with a strong focus on free weights rather than relying on machines like in a typical commercial gym and on top of that your coach is always there to help you with the technique and workout
plans.

Another big reason I chose this gym is the small group format, classes are capped at around 9 people, but they’re not always full, which makes it easier to connect with others. That’s been huge for me after recently moving to Columbus, because I really wanted to find a sense of community. The people here are genuine, supportive, and truly want to see you improve. The combination of expert coaching, challenging training, and a welcoming environment makes The Spot Athletics stand out. Coaches Billy, Matt and Levi the ones I worked before are amazing. I came to The Spot specifically because they had group fitness classes and were recommended to me by a friend. After 6-months of attending classes, I am really enjoying the group fitness program. They change up the workout focus every 3 weeks so it never gets boring. I find myself feeling more flexible and athletic even as I approach my 40s. This is not just a facility for athletes, but it’s for anyone trying to get that feeling back. It’s not filled with endless cardio equipment and stationary weight machines. Primary focus is on free weights and agility movements. Billy, Matt and Levi are all such great coaches. Even though you are with a group of 3-6 people, they still focus on your individual performance and technique, providing coaching throughout every session. I would recommend the group fitness program for anyone who needs the extra structure while trying to achieve their strength goals. I am hitting some of my highest PR’s in my life just 6-months in, looking forward to many more sessions.

I enjoyed my time at The Spot--When I'm in town, I'll forever hit up Billy for my workouts. Great facility, staff and location. Billy is my main trainer and is 10/10. I’m a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu athlete and he customizes my workouts to help with specific body movements towards my sport, while maximizing my strength and conditioning. When I workout he and Levi, another trainer are in the gym and both are supportive and helpful guys. Both are always more than happy to answer my questions, help with technique or have a fun debate over a fun topic.

I started training with Billy four months ago after a 10 month break from lifting that was somewhat unintentional. I feel like I’ve made gains where I thought I couldn’t. When I’m dealing with some kind of hurdle, he’s an expert at getting me over it, whether it’s a confidence issue, an old injury that needs a different approach, or just me being green at something I’ve never done before. He’s clear, direct, and patient, and I would highly recommend him to anyone trying to step into weightlifting for the first time or just needing a change. As for the venue itself, the environment of The Spot Athletics in Grandview is open and welcoming (and huge--when it’s busy, you still have room for everything). This is a great place!

2023 Review: Still a 5-star review and I have now trained at The Spot over 150 times! ALL of the staff are absolutely GREAT trainers, but Billy has been my trainer 90% of the time. I appreciate the attention-to-detail, motivating attitude, and humor that Billy brings to every session. The sessions are always challenging, rewarding, and more effective than what I would do if I was on my own.

2022 Review: I sincerely enjoy every training session with Billy D at The Spot Athletics! Great facilities with great trainers who were always willing to help even if my training session was not with them. When I say every single trainer was willing to help, I mean EVERYONE! My specific trainer that i was able to have for 3 months straight was Chelsie. Words cannot describe the experience and how great she was with me. Chelsie is so knowledgeable in what she does and has a true passion for it and helping athletes excel and move to that next level. She was very understanding and helped with some injuries i was dealing with. Chelsie is no doctor but she would go out of her way to find answers and solutions for me if you she couldn’t do it herself. She would dedicate her time after hours reaching out to friends and colleagues that she knew could help. She helped me off the clock just as much as she did on the clock. You can tell this is a lifestyle for her and because of this, not only did i find a great trainer, i created a friendship that will last a lifetime. I have been a Spot regular for years and the coaches are one of the main reasons I keep going.
Billy is one of the greatest. If training sessions were a baseball game, he would be an ANGEL IN THE OUTFIELD. But actually in the infield right up on the runner (is that a baseball term? I'm not really a baseball person), because he is super attentive and present in his sessions.
Sometimes, I am feeling spicy and will attend two sessions in a day and he will go out of his way to make sure I am not just repeating the same workout from the morning and that anything I want to specifically focus on is included.
He always goes above and beyond and I can't recommend training with him enough!!

Background about me: I've never been particularly athletic but I have always wanted to be, so I benefit greatly from guidance and encouragement. I tried crossfit for two years thinking it would get me the strength and endurance gains I was looking for. After being introduced to the programming and coaches here, I've finally seen how what I was doing before does not make sense.

At The Spot we spend the entire hour doing movements that make sense, are balanced, and incorporate progressive overload in a strategic and logical manner. The coaches really pay attention to my body. I used to experience a lot of lower back pain while working out and thought it was normal - suddenly I'm feeling stronger and better at movements without the strain on my back, because the coaches know how to adjust for what my body needs.

My daughter recently started working with Coach Rory and it has been one of the best training experiences she has ever had!!! Coach Rory has a great balance of push and support. He has set up a great training plan and in a short amount of time she is already seeing growth and results! From their first meeting they immediately clicked! She refused to go anywhere else, she knew she wanted to work with Coach Rory. He coaches like a big brother...he’s going to push you but he is also going to have your back. He works her hard in the gym (as he should) but he also gives “prep” talks before tournaments (volleyball) and checks in on her play whether that is texting for updates or actually watching a live stream. There is something to be said for the quality of a coach when the trainee leaves sessions saying I am so glad I came. That has been Lauryn with Rory. A few things I love about The Spot: the name, the coaches, the professionalism, the friendly atmosphere, the music.

So It all started about a year ago when I broke up with the last gym I was going too! I wasn’t pushed hard enough, I felt like just another customer and I wasn’t seeing the results I was paying for after TWO YEARS.
So a friend recommended me to The Spot.
My first day at The Spot I was afraid of all the new equipment and weights that I’ve never seen before. But I was introduced to everyone and it was a smaller group which was super nice. Everyone was so friendly.
When I was working out I was being guided and actually “taught” how to lift weights 🏋️‍♀️ correctly. To this day I still find myself learning new tricks to lifting and new muscles that have never even been activated before.
The music is ALWAYS on point! The Britney Burn isn’t one of my favorites... but it works in small dosages 😂
Some of my favorite coaches are Maeve, who always ALWAYS pushes me to be the beast I am. In the past I was underestimated and put in a mom group lifting 5lbs 😖. At The Spot Maeve has me NOW bench pressing 35lb dumbbells with ease and so much more because she pushes my limits. I feel so motivated when I leave. That’s the type of motivation I need!
Rory is actually pretty funny and reminds me of my Little brother. He also is the reason why I wake up on Sunday mornings. His playlist is super dope and it’s always a fun time.
If you ever go to Matt’s class... He is like a yoga guru. Be ready to find muscles you’ve never used before. He sorta reminds me of a healer. Also very chill music.
Kyle is another cool cat! He’s always super bubbly and love love loves food. He introduced me to a place on broad st that has the BEST pumpkin spice milkshakes...... NO JOKE! The coolest part about Kyles class is he always asks what we plan on eating after the class and what our favorite part of the workout was. Some of the answers he hears is probably hilarious.
Ben is a sweetheart and very cool to workout with. He’s got some pretty cool tricks to help when you are having a rough workout day. His playlist is alsoooooo pretty groovy.
Now this last coach I’ve never worked out with.... his name is Louis. He cracks me the hell up with his crockery and his personality. If he had a reality TV show..... I’d probably watch it 😂
There are a few coaches I haven’t had the pleasure of working out with but I’m sure they are just as cool. 😊

So needless to say, The Spot is the place to be!
I leave all the time, feeling empowered because I exceed my expectations. I’m more motivated to go to the gym because the coaches don’t make me feel like just another number. We are all friends. The music is always upbeat & good for the soul. The environment is always a happy experience. Even if it’s a super early morning class, everyone is always very cool.
And I can honestly say that I’ve never felt this way about any other gym.

I personal train with Steve and he’s reintroduced fitness into my life in a way which I actual enjoy, making it much more sustainable. We do a mixture of strength training and metabolic activity. I started training at The Spot a little over a year ago. I knew I wanted to learn to lift and maybe eventually get into powerlifting. I started going to the powerlifting sessions with Coach Louis consistently in January and I am very impressed with my progress! I never thought I could feel this strong or train this hard. I've had a long history with The Spot; started there part-time when my then-trainer moved to The Spot, called me, and said "you're gonna love this place!" As a part-time Columbus resident, I got hooked immediately on the personal training and small class sizes. It quickly became clear this wasn't a gym--it was a training facility with coaches who knew their stuff, knew how to diagnose a client's strengths and weaknesses, and had the equipment at their disposal to create effective workouts to meet a variety of needs. Even if I was gone for several months, I was greeted by name and a "welcome back" when I walked in.

When I became a full-time resident, I came back to The Spot. I've done small group training, one-on-one training...in various combinations as had fit my goals. When you're at The Spot, you work with a trainer; it's not just wander in and say, "I'm gonna do cardio today..." That's not how this place rolls. In fact, they have the year(!) planned out--but if you commit, you see results long before that. And you'll see all ages in there working toward their goals.

Could say more, but one important point today--they take cleanliness and safety seriously. They always have, but they've upped their game since reopening in late May when fitness facilities were allowed to do so--and I value that--I wouldn't be working out there if they didn't.

So much of what makes the Spot incredible is the atmosphere provided to its members, and that is 100% attributed to the coaches. The coaches make you feel so welcomed and everyone knows you by name. I experienced a pretty significant shoulder injury and without the support of the Spot I would not have recovered as well as I have nor would I have continued lifting and have made it to where I am now. I have been training with Louis now for the last several months and he is an amazing coach who is truly good at what he does. He has such a genuine and positive energy that make his classes the best I have ever been to. The classes are so much fun but still push you to the best of your ability. He has found my specific weaknesses and each week we work on them and every week I get a little bit better and a little bit stronger. He is super patient, incredibly knowledgeable, and always willing to answer questions. I recommend anyone and everyone looking for a gym to come to the Spot (and Coach Louis’s classes). I have never enjoyed going to the gym as much as I do now and appreciate everything the Spot has done for me.

I heard about The Spot 2 years ago as I was working in the same building as their Dublin, OH facility and I have been coming ever since. This is more than a gym, it's an athletic training center and you are always with a Personal Trainer whether 1 on 1 or in a small group class. They provide a coach, a plan and accountability. Additionally, they push and motivate you; including those you train with.

What stands out is the passion of the entire staff has for helping others. More than that it's their knowledge, attention to detail and form. You matter and your experience is important to them. It starts with JL (the owner) and all the trainers from Bri, to Adam, to Corey, to LeAnna, to Braden, to Ben, to Dave and the rest of Trainers.

I was diagnosed with Osteoarthritis and Bone Spurs in my knees 3 plus years ago and had everyday knee pain. I have also competed in many endurance sporting events and thought I knew running. My trainer told me my knee issues were due to being weak in the hips and they put me on a program to strengthen them and my knee pain completely disappeared 9 months ago. My plan includes running technique and training for Ironman Wisconsin. I thought I knew running! WOW, I am now building on proper running form. I have no doubt I will achieve my goals thanks to my PT and everyone at The Spot Athletics.

I mainly train with Bri right now for the small-group (shout out to large group exercise with Matt and Cory though). I have been training at The Spot in Grandview with Matt Barnauskas for almost two years and can't say enough good things about Matt, the gym and the staff. I have a bad lower back and shoulder, and Matt is able to set up my workouts to keep me from reinjuring myself, help me get stronger, and challenge me every week as well. I joke that he is my physical therapist and trainer all in one! Matt has taught me so many great stretching techniques that I use at home to help prevent soreness and for injury prevention. The environment is encouraging and the staff is incredibly supportive, friendly and knowledgeable. I started here about 7 months ago after being cleared to lift following a cycling accident (broken clavicle, broken ribs, and pre-fractures in both knees). I was paired up with Coach Johnny and through his extensive training and experience, he created a personalized training program that helped me regain mobility, strength, and working capacity.
