Disappointing Experience at YMCA Rockwell OKC
I had a very frustrating experience at the YMCA Rockwell location. I was on the elliptical, using my phone to text a quick message, when I was approached by a female staff member. She singled me out and told me I couldn’t use my phone while exercising. I understand that there are rules, but it felt like I was being unfairly targeted. The gym was practically empty. I have observed other people on machines around me texting or scrolling social media and no one else seemed to be given the same treatment.
It’s disappointing to feel singled out for something as minor as texting while working out, especially when it doesn’t impact anyone else. The staff should be more consistent in enforcing rules and should not be making members feel uncomfortable or unwelcome over trivial matters. I hope the management addresses this issue, as I was a paying member and expect to be treated with respect.
Overall, this experience left a bad taste in my mouth, and I’m seriously reconsidering my membership.

If you’re looking for a serious gym, this is it. I like it better than the other bigger gyms, because there are less distractions and more open weights… Less to compete with.

From the moment we entered the pool area, the lifeguard on duty repeatedly gave us a hard time despite our efforts to comply with all directions. Instead of offering clear and respectful guidance, he continued to make unnecessary remarks, including telling us that we were “lucky” to be able to use the pool. A facility we pay for just like every other member.
Even as we attempted to leave the pool area in order to avoid further conflict, the lifeguard persisted in antagonizing us. This behavior was not only unprofessional but also created an unwelcoming and hostile environment.
As paying members, we expected to be treated with courtesy and respect, and unfortunately this experience fell far short of those expectations.

This gym looks aweful. Looks like it’s not very taken care of. I got the free membership with Oklahoma complete health and I didn’t get a chance to use it the first month. I got charged $48 for the first month. I asked if I could pay with my credit card when I went in to the facility to cancel the membership and I was told that it had to COME OUT OF MY CARD AUTOMATICALLY! that makes no sense since I would have used the same exact card that is on file to pay it with. the dumbest thing I ever heard. all I know is that my membership better get cancelled on time or it’s going to get ugly. this gym has gone down hill very fast. Also the kids don’t get to much nor get to do anything unless they are of a certain age. Why have a family membership then.

I go to the Rockwell Plaza YMCA everyday. There are all the equipments I need for my work-out at the gym. The facilities are clean and well maintained. The staff is friendly and helpful. I enjoy the atmosphere here. If there's a sauna, it would be perfect.

I have been a member of the Y for several years. The instructors and classes keep me coming back daily. I can’t say enough about the instructors and how knowledgeable and helpful they are to all of us in class. It’s definitely a part of my daily routine and I don’t know what I would do without it!

This is by far the worse Ymca Rockwell plaza! The staff in the AM seems racist, its defently not friendly nor kids friendly, the staff dont even let you work out in peace, had and importan call and staff member IMMEDIATETLY told me to get off my phone, wild working out... WHATSSsss yea kill my working out vibe never been too a gym where they had ridiculous rules! you couldn't be on your phone when walking in the leptical hands free bluetooth! its allways something at this facility. I personately dont like the vibe, seem like there interest is most on the eldery needs so if your not use too that this is not the place. definitely not family friendly.
Not ALL THE YMCA ARE THE SAMe DON'T GET DISCOURAGE.

I figured that they were more deserving of a higher score but I just realized I was charged two months after I canceled my membership. That is after the month that they charged me because of my cancellation time. Yes I haven’t been to this gym in three months. And yes, they have charged me for three months. Also, I’m paying $33 a month, including a military discount. Their gym is definitely not worth 33 a month and they don’t push out anything that would make it worth that much.
(edit)
I went to the YMCA in person and got some of the money back. That didn’t come without trouble though. The lady that was dealing with my paperwork, just left the papers on the desk and walked out. Another employee had to finish the paperwork. I probably will be questioning if giving them two stars is a good idea.

I'm changing my review for the third time! They will not take cc off of file when asked unless I add another one NO WAY, so they can take extra money like they did this month without telling me, then claim to have sent emails, lies, manager Bre or whoever won't return a call or get on the phone. They will not cancel over the phone, so I have to wait til I'm back in OKC welp I'll be getting a new card so try to charge it if you want. Will never deal with this Y again, the customer service doesn't exist like it did in previous years. Will never donate here either, they steal money and won't warn you of extra charges, but will hound by email, phone and in person when they thought I owed and turned out I did not.

The customer service has gone down hill here. No communication when they steal extra money but when they want to hound you about a balance that you don't even owe, they will call, email and stop you everyday that you go in. I've been with this Y for 7 years, and unfortunately this will be my last. Bre or whoever she is won't even return a phone call and when you request they remove your card, they won't do it without putting another on file, so they can continue to steal extra money...sad, shameful and disrespectful. I will be cancelling as soon as I am back in OKC because go figure they won't let you cancel any other way. 👎👎👎👎

Such a rude costumer service. I paid for one day pass and then had to leave immediately, i asked for a refund and they said no refunds. But they said i can come in another day without paying. When I went again, they said they can't let me in, even the supervisor she was not helpful at all, she supposed to solve the problem, but instead she said "that's my final thing, the one day pass is 10$. I called on the number asking for the director, and she said don't know her hours, thank you and hanged up on me!
Please train your staff well on how to deal with costumers, and not to lie or scam.

not one to usually leave reviews but was very offended at my last visit to your facilities. Your lifeguard jonathan likes to throw around the N word however and whenever he pleases. Didn’t think I could hear him but I definitely did. If this is what you allow your company to be represented by I’m highly disappointed and can promise me and my family will not step into your facility again.

Do not get swim lessons through the YMCA if your child is even REMOTELY special needs. They give such great talk about being inclusive to everybody, but then turn straight around and say that they can't handle your child and kick them out. To give perspective, my autistic son had gone through all but one of the lessons and was getting to the point where he was starting to get comfortable swimming in deep water without a vest on.
I get a call from the director saying he is no longer welcome for his last lesson because "he was going underwater when he wasn't supposed to". This entailed him just excitedly dunking his head underwater which was actually one of the skills taught and reinforced each lesson. He was actively listening to the coach, and said coach said he was one of the best swimmers in the class.
Two stars is because my son made remarkable progress before the director kicked him out and because they offered a refund. I'll never be using the YMCA to help teach my children water safety again. Parents aren't allowed to teach their children privately except for very short and inconvenient periods. Guess I'll cancel my membership and use the money to save up for actual lessons.
As a final thought, my son's dismissal may well have been retaliation. My wife filed a complaint with this individual against the coach because said coach called her a crybaby after she lost her goggles in water that was over her head and he had her jumping into 5 ft water for half the lesson to make her learn how to go under and pick them up when she was still learning to tread water. She came up splashing like she was drowning and we were waved off from intervening.
Bottom line, news articles shows that the YMCA has a wonderful history of turning away special needs even when they're high functioning. Lovely to know this attitude extends to Oklahoma City.

No I will NOT be contacting you as I’m not going to help you do your job for you. But I will give you this advice:
1. Have a conversation with your employees or volunteers about their attitude and how to interact with all guests
2. Clean up and revitalize your facility it looks like a nursing home facility. For the ridiculous fees you charge you should be able to revitalize your facility. Makes me wonder where your money is going.
3. Lower your fees. There are literally 20 fitness centers near your location that offer a modern, professional environment for half your fees.
Original review below.
Wow not a lot of recent reviews so I’ll get you up to speed. Run by a bunch of rude old ladies. That’s the good part. The bad part is the $78 a month fitness plan. It’s also run down and sad. Just about any other fitness center is better so avoid this place

If you work out between 8am-10am and value your peace and sanity, do not join here. They have a member that cranks the incline and speed to the max, holds on for dear life and POUNDS her feet on the treadmill so loud that it sounds like construction is going on (you hear it over your headphones in max volume). I complained to the front desk multiple times, wrote 3 emails, they spoke to her on numerous occasions, she simply rolls her eyes and doesn’t care at all about the other gym goers. Even though it states in the YMCA you can’t misuse a machine (which she is, she’s risking injuring herself and breaking equipment). Finally I reached the end of my rope and reached out to cooperate. They can’t tell her to not be loud apparently 🤷🏻♀️ so if you want a gym with proper gym etiquette and respects fellow gym goes, this isn’t the one. The staff is AMAZING and always friendly but that one morning guest is PEST to keep it mild.

waw first time i found toooo many 5 stars in this reviews, especially when you see professional & ymca pics in some reviews. this is lies. except if the whole staff including manager replaced with professional & friendly staff, not the rood ones like we left over there . please customers check other bad reviews about this location. and the weird thing never replied to one stars to approach the person or say sorry. but this how arrogant people work, not apologizing but trying to ask staff and friends to post lies & false reviews. please you are paid from our taxes ,yearly & monthly payments, you should respect and act friendly with allllllll costumers & DISCRIMINATION NOT EXPECTABLE IN USA.

The Rockwell Plaza YMCA is a fantastic place to work out and make friends! The teachers are the best. They offer a wide variety of wonderful classes. I go to the yoga, Barre, Pilates and muscle conditioning classes and have never been disappointed in the quality of the instruction in these. There are also lots of opportunities to get involved with their community outreach. The Backpacks for Kids, Pancakes with Santa, and Halloween reading/trick-or-treat events serve both the local children as well as their parents. What a great place to be a member!

I have been using the YMCA at Rockwell Plaza for over ten years now, and I'm 9 years overdue in writing this review! I must say, there's a reason I have continued to renew my family membership, and those reasons are as follows:
- Always clean
- The staff are consistently friendly and professional
- The facility is filled with plenty of all the equipment and weights you could want...personally for me, that's elipticals, free weights, and machines.
- You see the same management year after year...Taylor, Kristen, et. al....this gives comfort to we customers.
Thanks for being "MY YMCA!" You are the best!

This gym is great but you will deal with the worst membership front desk staff ever!! ! Rheanna ( front desk lady) will offer you the worst customer service you’ll ever see ! She will call the police on you and you kids just to scare you because she believes she have more rights than you. This unqualified young lady traumatized my kids for calling the police on us while we have all the rights to be at the gym like anybody else! She has no clue on how to read the policies on the board and how to treat members not the resolve an issue. She will raise her voice at you and will call you « stupid » just because she gets upset at you when you would want to talk to her supervisor… Management has never done anything to resolve the issue since she’s still working there !!! I was faced with racial discrimination and she threatened my family just because she believes she has more power than me. Where are the YMCA values? What is she asking about my race ? Why did you employee Rheanna had to ask the members if I was Hispanic or not ? What’s the point of relevance ? Why did she call the police on us while my kids had the right to be with me on the elliptical ? Why she didn’t wan to call her supervisor on the speaker so I could talk to her ? Are we a danger for her ? I feel like ma y questions were not answered yet. This is a serious concern!

I am waiting to hear back from corporate but Whitney Claybrook did nothing about it. No security there and they let my child go with someone who wasn’t on the list, as well as didn’t check their ID. Great gym… BUT.
The hours SUCK how can a gym only be open 9-4 on Saturdays and like 1-5 on Sunday? They even close an hour earlier on Friday. I just feel like it’s unfair to people playing 20+ dollars a month. I used to work here the employees only make minimum wage so I feel like you really can’t be losing that much to stay open.

The gym itself is fine but don’t sign up if child watch is the amenity you need. They only staff one person in the room and several evenings per week they are full and can not watch your child. Director says it’s a lack of staffing but every evening, the rest of the staff just congregates at the front desk laughing and looking at their phones. They suggest to call first but that doesn’t work either because the desk person doesn’t always actually go check to see if the room is full, causing yet another wasted trip to hear “sorry”. So just know you will basically be paying a more expensive monthly fee for a gym without child care. My wife and I have had to stop going to the gym together because of the hassle of it.

If you sign up for the YMCA don't sign up at this location - they won't treat you how you deserve to be treated. I had to cancel my membership due to COVID-19 concerns. I followed the YMCA policy to cancel without any further charges, but I was still charged. When I asked about it one of the managers (Mary Beth Harper) told me it was her mistake I was charged but she refused to give me a refund. I'm honestly not sure why, but they have lost my business.

Honestly, a sub par gym at best. Plenty of useless or odd working materials. I've been coming here for 5 years or so and they continue to purchase things no one uses. They make a decent gym seem small and useless. When the bought a cage they didn't even drill it down!!! The dip bar shakes in the way down and in the way up, easily a lawsuit waiting to happen. Top 5 useless gym in OKC!!! And why kick everyone out mid workout to clean. Gold on expressway doesn't let people in during cleaning but doesn't kick any one out...this is definitely a glorified daycare and is JUST convenient!!!

I grew up as a child active in my community YMCA back in the 80’s. It was the place all the kids went after school and in the summer. The programs were fun and the sports helped keep us busy and out of trouble. The YMCA of today (for some reason) has changed for the worse since then. And it’s not just this location as I’ve been to several of the metro Y’s. This location in particular is run down and in need of repair. Not only is the YMCA funded through donations but they also receive federal funding which makes me wonder where’s the money going? My kids have attended the summer camp for the last 6 years and I’ve had multiple issues with the camp counselors and their lack of professionalism and training. The camp director (the only grown adult) is there in the morning at drop off, leaves during the day, and then comes back just in time for the parents to pickup the kids, leaving the kids with a bunch of 18 year olds. Thankfully, my kids won’t be going back next summer. My other issue is the basketball court at this location is constantly taken over by teenagers and the younger kids aren’t able to play. The YMCA needs better oversight and better management because there may come a day when people stop funding them and go elsewhere.

When asked to suspend my acct during covid they did, only to start charging again the next month, then refused to refund me the monthly fee after requesting a refund. I was uninformed by staff that "suspending an acct is for 30 days only". Manager was unapologetic and refused to do anything for their members. Hours suck. Its a glorified daycare. Take your money and membership elsewhere other than the YMCA.

Have been going here since right after they opened. Vanessa is the best Zumba teacher ever! Highly recommend her classes, yoga with heather also great...equipment always clean and can usually get the machines I want. Pool temps vary, haven't been to the pool in awhile, but it needed some work done last time I was there

I have been a member of the YMCA for some years now, today I was approached by a trainer and was told my cut off shirt was no acceptable in the facility. I also had on high waisted leggings. I have seen several white women wearing sports bras and cut off shirts in this gym and never have seen them be approached. I was the only one approached, being the black woman I am. The trainer then went to another co worker and literally started to stare and point at me as an example I assume. I nicely left the facility and went to Four Star Fitness. I will no longer donate to the YMCA.

Was told my crop top was too short and I had to cover up because it’s a “Christian facility” but there were women in the gym area with sports bras on with no shirts

Customer service has really went downhill. Don't ask anyone to turn it to the game while your in the middle of a workout on the treadmill. They will tell you to ask someone else who is working the area as it is to inconvenient as a staff member to locate the person to ask for assistance.

The facility is always neat and clean. The staff members over the last year and a half have been great. When I used the sports programs for my kids, they loved it, and they have a VERY spacious workout area, with lots of equipment.

My kids are in the summer program. Every morning they beg me not to take them. On the car ride home my 9 year old is in tears be cause of how bad their day was. The teachers don't care. They put a good front like they do. Actions speak louder than words.. Anyone know of a good child care with openings please let me know!!!!!!!!!!

Pros - convenient, decent array of equipment, childcare
Cons - manager and some of the other staff are rude, the water filters in the bubblers will stay orange or red for several months or longer before being replaced, only one ez bar, lots of elderly men on TRT who camp power racks for hours at a time, CNN plays 5 days a week (why I can’t take my child in past the lobby), manager parks close to the door preventing seniors from securing a closer spot.
I think they have a lot of work ahead of them to become a decent facility. Namely working from the top down and reorganizing. Maybe hire someone a little more in tune with the fitness industry and can manage a business alike.

Love this place, want to join! Front desk was really busy Monday when I walked in which is the reason for 4 stars. There were 2 ladies at the front desk. One (Tabatha) was very busy but took time to greet me as I walked up and said she would be with me in a moment, the other lady did not even bother looking at me when she was done, so I waited. I took a tour with Tabatha and she was knowledgeable about the programs I wanted to join and so nice and outgoing. She asked me what i was looking for to help with my goals and gave me a ton of suggestions on classes that might work for me. The pool times were not as good as I would like to see. Seems like there is a lot of planned out lessons in the evening that takes away from other water aerobic classes and free swimming times. The prices were a little high, but she told me that was due to community outreach and helping those who need it. Its nice to know my money goes to help others who need it and promote a healthy lifestyle.

Pool had too much chlorine and the noodles were torn and ripped. Pool painted edges were peeling. Kids tried to play some games but the shuffle board pieces were tore up as well as the table. Tried air hockey, wires hanging from underneath and plug was broken. Pool table is just trash, even missing some balls. Not all kids wanna work out! For the money charged for memberships this place is rundown.

The only time on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays I can go swim Laps is at 11:30. I have a 2 year old daughter I bring with me and drop off at the Child Watch Center, which closes at 12:30. Everytime I drop her off the ladies who watch the kids promptly tell me "you know we close at 12:30 right?" They're always pretty rude about it and the vibe I get is like why are you dropping your kid off now sorta thing. Honestly what parent would drop off their kids without looking at the schedule, you know? So I get really tired of them asking me that everytime I drop her off! These ladies really want you know that they close at 12:30! I suggest putting out a big ass poster board saying "WE CLOSE AT 12:30!!!" So at least I don't have to hear it again.

This place is an absolute joke. Their front end people are under trained and lack any customer service skills. To be honest, there is a new person at the desk every time we go in there. Turnover much?
Their sports leagues are also very VERY bad! They'll take the money for the league fees and thats about it. Our team(s) have missed or forfeited numerous games because of scheduling issues. That is to say, they change the schedules and never tell anyone. The person in charge of athletics there is Zack, and he is beyond clueless when it comes to actually running any of the leagues up there.
If you're thinking about playing basketball up there, don't. The refs are worse than the refs from the Lighthouse (OKC hoopers know what I'm talking about). It's worth noting that there are currently only 4 teams in the men's Fall League - down from 9 in the summer and 12 in the spring. That should tell you something.
The place is in dire need of updating as well. Hard to not feel like you walking into a 1970's hotel when you visit this location.
All in all, choose a different gym, or at least a different YMCA. Broken furniture, cold showers, outdated equipment, poor management, and a staff that simply doesn't care.
You can do better.

My son did swimming lessons here during the fall/winter months for two years and it was pretty disappointing. Most of the time, the class was too large to get much attention and the teachers were usually different people week to week. Some were very good and some pretty much wasted the whole class time. The class used floaties a lot and there wasn't much opportunity to swim without the floats, which to me is the whole point of swimming lessons. For each class level, there is certain criteria the child has to meet in order to pass to the next class, but since the teachers are different every week, they have no idea what the child's skill level is. In fact they don't even know their names. They don't have anyone grading the child and don't do a skills check off or anything like that. Once or twice, the people who worked the front desk had no record of me paying for the class (and I pay cash) so I had to dig out my receipts to show to them. One time the pool closed because it was broken and they didn't call us, so we showed up after driving 25 minutes just to have to turn around again. During inclement weather they canceled a lesson and decided to have a make up lesson really late on a school night. When I addressed this with the aquatics director, she pretty much didn't care and made it sound like I was lucky they were doing a make up lesson at all. Overall unorganized and they don't really seem to care.
