I called 24 Hour Fitness to ask if they could work with me for one single workout before my volunteer shift downtown by Union Station. The gym is right down the street, and I figured they might show a little flexibility or basic human sense. Instead I got hit with “it’s 30 dollars no matter what,” zero exceptions.
It’s ridiculous watching a big chain act like they’re guarding VIP access when it’s just a gym. If that’s how they treat people who are literally volunteering their time to help the city, I’m glad I don’t support them. Plenty of better gyms out there that don’t operate like this.

I’ve been a member at 24 hour fitness for several years, and appreciate the friendly staff and close proximity of their Pearl location! Ty, who is a membership specialist was especially helpful in canceling my membership. I informed him that I have a home gym and was no longer using 24 frequently enough to justify keeping the membership. There was no sales pitch to try and keep me locked in, only seamless service and great conversation. I’m sure I’ll be back someday! 😀 👍 🙏

Great location in the Pearl, the staff are incredibly kind and helpful. 👏 Special shoutout to Ty, he made the sign up process so easy! He is not pushy, he is easy to talk to, and he helped me find the best membership option for my lifestyle. Looking forward to spending more time with this great team! Thank you again!

The ONLY reason I chose this gym is because it was called 24 HOUR FITNESS and I can only work out at night due to work. I just bought a year pass and they neglected to tell me they close between 8-10 PM while giving me the sales pitch. It didn’t even cross my mind to ask about the hours of a 24 hour fitness. Absolutely ridiculous. Change your name, it’s an oxymoron. Or least tell people while you are giving them the tour. If I would have been told, I wouldn’t have wasted my money on a pass I can rarely use.

24 Hour Fitness isn’t actually open 24 hours. It’s 2025, technology exists to make this gym always available.
Outdated equipment. The place reeks inside.
But they’re down the street from me, so the convenience is too good to pass up.

People are constantly getting their wallets stolen out of the locked lockers in both women’s & men’s locker rooms. Mine included.
Gym definitely needs newer equipment. Better equipment! The gym is dated. VERY dated. Manager (Riley) is genuinely great. It is what it is. But it could be soooo much better if they took out some of the old equipment hardly anyone uses & brought in some things people actually would use… like some Plate-Loaded Hip Belt Squat Machines.

Honest opinion gym is lit no lunk alarm u can scream when u lift , no ego junky’s so far , lockers that have built in locks, hynas , if u need a spot alota nice people here wold help u . Cons sometimes it smells like wet clothes left unwashed , equipment is outdated , staff is nice for the most part the ones with a bad attitude usually are gone within a few days and they won’t push u to pay some stupid high price membership u can cancel any time

For the love of anything good PLEASE CLEAN THE STEAM ROOM!!!! It’s absolutely DISGUSTING in there. There’s dirt literally dripping down the walls, it’s slimy, and smells of pure mold and feces. At this point it’s a direct health hazard. It doesn’t help that people still wear their shoes inside despite signs posted everywhere!!!! According to the manager the steam room is cleaned ever Thursday, that’s clearly a DAMN LIE. Gym Etiquette is NONEXISTENT.

Cardio machines all wobble, jiggle, and make unnecessary noises. Overall it’s quiet and boring, which is fine. The building is an old warehouse which gives it a fun urban feel. A visit from the maintenance team would be nice - seems like they gave up on this location.

I am a former member of the Les Mills Trainer and Accessor Team and was surprised to see that Les Mills Pilates was taught in the Pilates class that Amber subbed today. I learned that she is also covering pilates classes with Les Mills Pilates at the location off of Halsey. My understanding is that 24 Hour Fitness does not have a club in the area that is licensed to teach Les Mills Pilates. The one star is because Amber knows that teaching a licensed format at a club that does not have a license for the format is against the instructor agreement, she could and should loose her certification. 24 leadership should not be allowing this to happen.

I don’t understand why this place has so many bad reviews. 24 hour fitness has always been the best, most chill, down to earth but still hard working gym I’ve been to. I’ve been going for years but recently started my “serious” fitness journey. The employee Miguel helps me a ton giving advice about diet, different exercises, and techniques to maximize my progress. Always greeted with a smile and great advice when I come here. Would recommend 100%

Good gym overall, I’ve been coming here for about a year and am not planning to switch. My only critique is the climate control. The temp is perfect in the winter, but it can get very hot in there during warmer weather. I’ve had to end my workout early because it was too hot to continue. Hope they add more fans/ac, especially upstairs.

I was recently charged by 24 hr fitness for something that I signed up for from a year ago. I don't remember signing for recurring payments and I don't want to renew another year's worth of membership right now. I am very badly injured from a fall accident I had a month ago. I have a 1 year long recovery time, so I can't go to the gym anymore until I'm healed. I called the Johnson St location to dispute the charges. Riley answered the phone and looked up my account. He canceled all charges and ended my membership then refunded what was taken out of my account. I'm disabled and in a wheelchair for now, but when I'm back on my feet I'll be signing up again. Thanks 24 hr fitness and thanks Riley. 🫡 🙏

When they are open it's OK. The staff, when there, are very nice. This morning, 04/11/2025, they were closed and did not open until hours after their opening time. Not a one time thing. This has been happening every few months. There is only one person working in the entire place, at the counter, if they don't show up, it's closed. For such a big chain and the fees, it's unacceptable.

After 5 months here, I’m sad to leave ! From first signing up with Darian’s help, I’ve appreciated this gym as a “third place” while in Portland. I’ve been to a lot of gyms, in cities and small towns, and I’d give this one a solid 4/5.
Pros:
- great staff! Aaron, Johnny, and the rest of the crew have always been friendly and ready to help
- On that, I knew my time here was temporary when I signed up, and Darian helped sign me up in a way that was most economical and he was so helpful & personable!
- I’ve been to so many gyms that feel primarily white, male, and straight, and didn’t notice that as much here.
- The gym really has everything (I’m a snob on this one, so you’ll have to take my word). All the staples plus some.
- Centrally located in the pearl, I loved being able to walk in!
Cons:
- The gym is dirty. Not so much that I’ve been too disgusted to work out/use a space, but definitely enough to take note and never forget pool shoes. Pretty bad in corners, then generally the floors.
- Pool reservations. Maybe this is a pro and con. Sometimes I’d want to swim but not think of it early enough to get a reservation when I wanted. But it was nice to have the whole lane to yourself if you can plan ahead to reserve ahead of time
- Ads everywhere for IV therapy (but that’s my personal hate towards IV therapy talking)

The stars are ONLY for the staff. I really didn't want to make this review because the staff are great, especially Ken! ;) But man this place is FILTHY and something always seems broken (hand drier, scale etc.) I soak and want to start swimming but I'm high key afraid of getting pink eye, athlete's foot, staph or something else. The hot tub has things floating in it, and the bubbles weren't working because the filter is broken (I was told). The sauna is stinky (could just be because some people are funky), and the floors in the women's swim locker look like they never get clean. Ever. Caked on grime, trash and enough hair on the floor to remind me of that movie The Grudge. Every time I forget my slippers--instant regrets. I'm hobbling like a goblin on curled feet willing myself to magically levitate off the floor because it's that nasty. This place NEEDS to hire either more cleaners or better ones. And this SHOULD NOT fall back on the staff. I'm probably ending my membership this month and moving to LA Fitness or Movement. I'd rather pay 300% more and have the peace of mind that I won't end up with treatment-resistant bacteria. I guarantee you it's cheaper to higher cleaners than to pay out a very expensive class-action lawsuit to everyone who ends up catching something. The photos can't quite capture it and I wasn't willing to get close to the hairballs.
But love the staff, y'all are cool.

The place is absolutely FILTHY…like to the point it’s DOWN RIGHT DISGUSTING… crud build up in the steam room and showers. Group exercise room is full of dust and hair all over the floor. Bring your own mat, I’ve yet to see a person wipe down/clean a mat after use. Sauna permanently smells like body odor, steam room smells like mildew and mold. Locker room is never properly cleaned, there some lockers with dust that has accumulated over years. Don’t EVER look on top of the lockers or put anything up there. I don’t think the turf in the middle has ever been cleaned properly, definitely never disinfected nor deodorized.

The staff is usually friendly and there is a good range of weight lifting equipment but this gym is absolutely filthy. I don't think the water fountain has ever been cleaned... it has brown muck crusted all over it and the water tastes like it's from a hose in a backyard in Louisiana.
I once spilled a bit of water on the floor and wiped it up with a paper towel... the color that paper towel was afterwords made me gag. I think there is a cleaning crew that cleans the bathrooms and that's it.
There's about a 25% surprise chance any of the cardio equipment will turn off/reset in the middle of your workout with no warning.

Pros:
-Price. Great cost for what you get.
-Generally most people re-rack their weights
-3:1 Men to woman ratio. Everyone polite. Never had an issue.
-Front desk staff typically friendly
-Appreciate the lap swimming reservations but people don’t always follow the sign up.
-Most machines are in working condition or quickly fixed. Not all mint condition. Cables could use some oiling.
-Overhead music and TVs on but sometimes a little too loud. Can hear through my own headphones.
-Front desk has weight bar pads for free rent
Cons:
-Limited hours, not 24/7
-Approx 20 free parking spaces, cars usually lined up waiting for spots
-Difficult to call via phone
-Men don’t typically follow the sauna/steam room rules. Dirty street shoes on. Frequently opening the door. Loud.
-Locker rooms are functional. Not amazing. Sometimes no soap in showers or bathrooms.
-No free towels
-Can be busy. But just have to be flexible with what machines you use if they’re taken. Not too many people hogging machines though.

Not gonna lie, I’m a little bummed that a majority of 24 Hour Fitnesses are no longer open 24 hours as their name suggests. That being said, I love being able to access whatever club is convenient for me, the towel service they’re offering, and the pool/sauna/hot tub that each club has.
The only drawback to this specific location is, people like to sit in the entrance to the parking lot WAITING for a spot to open up. I understand you don’t wanna pay for parking, but that’s just rude. I suggest maybe, just maybe, go to a different club that offers more parking… You’ll spend less time waiting, you’ll get a spot you don’t have to pay for, AND you’ll save other people the frustration of sitting there trying to figure out what in the world you’re doing. Lookit, I just wanna go in, do my workout, and leave. A parking spot is the absolute least of my worries. Not to mention, it’s not that much to pay for parking. If you drive a really nice car, I’m sure you can afford $3 for a couple hours…. Or maybe just go sit on your couch 🤷🏻♀️

They really should implement a no phone policy. There is no reason people should have their phones in the sauna. I shouldn’t be able to hear someone’s music through their headphones, and people most definitely shouldn’t be listening to music/podcasts on speaker in the sauna. The guy to my right had a podcast on speaker from his phone, and the guy to my left had music on speaker. While two other guys had a loud conversation about “running through” women. Finally all those people leave, but in walks a guy with his music so loud, I can clearly hear it through his headphones. Sauna is for relaxation. Leave your phone in a locker.

I get it. It's cold out. It might not be safe for employees to show up. However, there's GOT to be a way to let members know it's closed before they walk across town in the same weather. Tried calling and got some automated system.
While I'm complaining, none of you who mention how clean the location is have been to ANY other gym. It's filthy. I've personally seen the same garbage on the floor for 5 days straight. Can't imagine the last time it was vacuumed.
The cardio machines are maintained by someone whose only qualification for "working" is "it moves around". I've personally had to "fix" wobbly bikes by placing folded paper under one foot (the feet don't hand-twist, tried that). Weight machines go unfixed for months at a time.

24 as a company is really not doing well. So this 5 stars is not for 24. For the most part if I could afford more I would never be in this facility. With that being said, every manager at all the 24s in the portland, beaverton, tualatin area should take notes from Riley. The pearl could easily be the grossest out of all the gyms but somehow its the cleanest. I always see the manager himself cleaning and putting in a bunch of effort. I’ve seen the good, bad and and one point how awful this gym was. Within the past month I have seen such a change in the way staff interacts with its members, cleanliness, and positivity! That change has been passed along to the members as well. I’ve noticed such a huge difference in the way people are treating and respecting the gym. As a multi gym owner myself I have go to say the new management in place (John) has proven how much a simple change in leadership can make a major difference. Keep up the hard work John. You and your team at the Pearl “ 24 hour” Fitness are creating a wellness environment people want to be at!

I don’t know why people have bad experiences with the staff at the front desk. They have always been helpful and friendly to me and everyone else that I’ve ever seen approach them. I see complaints about cleanliness but some people feel entitled and leave messes. It happens in nearly every business or public area. The staff are not eagle-eyed janitors that are waiting to pounce on trash, but I do see staff making rounds to clean and sanitize from time to time. The parking lot is small and there’s not much that can be done about that. But the building is in a very walkable area that is two blocks from a bus stop and one block from a streetcar stop. It does suck that it isn’t open 24 hours a day, or even later than 10:00pm but maybe they can extend the hours again at some point.

Good gym. Never so busy I can't find equipment to use if I am flexible about the sequence. Loses 2 stars because they play songs featuring or by the domestic abuser Chris Brown.

I’m happy with my experience here.
It definitely is a very popular gym and it will be full of people but is not imposible to get a nice work out.
Also, the club is getting to look nicer and cleaner. Stephanie has a very good energy all the times and is willing to help you!
Thank you ☺️

I usually get here around 4:30 and it's already PACKED and just gets worse the longer I stay. There's always people sitting around on machines playing on their phones and filming themselves. I waste so much time standing around waiting for people to free up the machine I want to use. A handful of the elliptical and treadmills upstairs are clunky and broken, but there's usually enough free that I don't feel like I have to be right next to someone. I wish they freed up the spin room for more workout space. Overall, we regret getting out membership here and wont be renewing after the year is up. There's a small number of parking spots out front, but we've never been lucky enough to get one. So expect to pay for street parking.

The facility had everything you needed and was decently large. The downsides are that it can get quite crowded during the peak hours, making it difficult to find available equipment or get a good uninterrupted workout in.

2023-02-22/23 Called the gym to get the opening schedule because of the inclement weather. Gym is closing early, but desk person didn’t provide any useful information about opening in the morning.
Please respond with the opening plans for Thursday, Fed 23. Is the plan to be open at 5am, or is the plan already to postpone opening?
Those of us who show up at 5am often leave before anyone would answer the phone.
In the future, a phone announcement of a postponed opening schedule would be nice.

The facilities themselves are okay. Obviously not 5-star, but it’s a 24 hour fitness, so I’m not expecting the stars. However, for the last couple of months, all but one of the ellipticals, the incline is broken so they won’t adjust. We have mentioned this to several staff members and I either get “Ok” without even looking up from their phone, or a look like “…and? What do you expect me to do?” Staff could at least PRETEND like they will mention it to maintenance or the manager. Very unfriendly and unhelpful.

not enough machines when it comes to weights they only have one or two of one set of machines otherwise your constantly waiting to do leg press etc but then they have like 14 of the same excercise bikes etc there's people with heavy medicine balls who just grab it and slam it down to the ground makes the whole bottom tier of the gym shake and echo etc

Awesome staff. Most expansive set of equipment out of all the local 24 Hours. And, if it's crowded, it's jam-packed full of 10's. Thus turning what would be a burden into an advantage. Plus, it totally serves as inspiration. Unless you're working out for health reasons. In which case, go ahead and redirect yourself to the Mall 205 24. And don't come back til your a 10!👋🏻

I've been going to this gym in this location since it was Gold's Gym over 20 years ago. 24 Hour Fitness has been a great gym for years but in the past few months as it opened back up the music has turned into speed metal and death metal and other things that most of the people who work out there don't like. I've had multiple conversations with different folks working out and they just turn their own music up even higher in their headphones and earbuds. I mentioned this to the staff but they brush it off and say they can't do anything about it it's the management that decides. If you listen to your own music or don't like speed metal and other kinds of Hardcore music than this is probably not your gym and maybe you might like a different 24 Hour Fitness or some other gym better.
12/18/2021 update - with COVID Omicron rapid accelerating one would think 24 Hour staff would be paying more attention. Yet again this morning I saw someone working out for an extended amount of time in the cardio area with his mask completely pulled below his chin. There is no excuse for this continuing gross lapse in judgement and management responsibility.

I’m told her name was Muriel and she is the manager at this location. Upon first walking in, she looked at me then turned away and stood in the corner behind the desk for a few minutes while I stood there waiting for her to finally pay attention. She then proceeds to treat me as if I do not belong in this gym. I can only assume because I am black and told her my brother gave me a pass because he works in the Gresham location.. this is “the pearl” location but is obviously lacking in customer service and professionalism. Honey I may be black, but I’m also the member and YOU are the help.
Also the sauna+steam rooms are in the pool area which are NOT connected to the locker rooms and allow both men and women. Not a fan.

Yesterday while l was working out with my friend and showing him my exercise routine, the head trainer Zeena Aqel aggressively approached me and told me to stop training him or else she will ban me from the club. After speaking with her manager and explaining that l was with a friend and not a client, Zeena proceeded to make rude comments about my country (l am visiting Portland for few days) and other personal attacks towards me. Her manager was kind enough to diffuse the situation, but now l feel very uncomfortable and personally threatened by her behavior and l would NEVER step foot i to another 24 Hour Fitness. I don’t understand how someone like her is allowed to work with people if she can’t tell the difference between a trainer and a regular guy, and if she threatens and insults members in such manner.

I've canceled my membership with plans to return when y'alls Fear and Body Inconfidence is worked through in y'alls mindsets... but due to this lady who was WAY BEYOND THE PALE kicked me out for wearing the mask I bought at 24 hour fitness in Orchards Washington... For that I'm Resuming My Membership at LA Fitness...And Yes... This is a solid gym. COVID has limited some of the "extras" that some gyms offer, but there is a basketball court and pool that remains open. The equipment is is good shape, plenty of space, and the members seem to respect mask mandates. Some items like the water fountains and shower spaces could use cleaning/updates. But the staff is friendly and it is conviently located for biking around the city.

Rude and unhelpful front desk. Was a member here years ago. recently moved back to Portland and got a trial pass to try the club. Even though there were no restrictions on the pass they said because I had been to the club before and had been a member years ago I wasn’t a new member and couldn’t use the pass even though I’d driven all the way in and had already communicated this to the woman who called me after I signed up for the pass. I would have probably joined this gym but because of the terrible customer service (and unfriendly) It’d be the last place I’d go at this point.

I wish the women's lockers in the swim area and the steam room could be scrubbed down better. Like Downtown 24 hr, they really need someone with interior design skills to put hooks and other amenities where they should be, e.g., at Pearl, should you have to walk around someone taking a shower after you've already changed back to your street clothes? Otherwise, they have a nice selection of yoga classes, steam and dry sauna, jacuzzi and lots of customers.

A sports gym in transition so it seems. Healthy and mixed gender membership but management needs to step up and become more visible and involved in the day-to-day operations. Things are left broken too long. Nice basketball court and lap pool. The locker rooms need a remodeling effort. Why are there no gender neutral bathrooms? The curtain is off the former juice bar area but customer service can be slow and overwelmed behind the counter. Kaia (sp?) is the exception most days. She is very kind with a great smile. No sure about the yoga classes they offer upstairs...whoever leads that team is too humble. Good selection of weight lifting machines. There's other areas with cool stuff like ropes and bars that I haven't tried yet. Wet area has a nice jacuzzi, steam room and sauna. It's lightly patroled by staff hence the basketball shoes in the steam room problem. Men's locker room can get crowded but rarely chatty. If you are looking for a friendly social club this might not be the best place. I've been a member for a year and am rarely approached by other members for conversation.
The Pearl is one of Portland's better inner city neighborhoods (Lotta of yuppies.) Parking could pose challenges for some -- there seems to always be cars waiting for a space.
