Christopher and Kristine are a true blessing. They provide a very welcoming culture at the Academy so you feel comfortable. This comfort along with their vast knowledge of martial arts, fitness and overall well-being is amazing. Then add their strong ability to teach and care for others, including an appropriate sense of humor. Trust me, when you are sparring, grappling or getting a cardio work out, a sense of humor is a very good thing.

I have been a student of Sifu Christopher for 1.5 years now attending once or twice per week. Sifu Christopher is a true friend and mentor. Meaning, he challenges me appropriately to improve mentally and physically as a human being. He takes the time to listen and learn ones abilities first, then teaches accordingly. As a early 50s professional Christopher's teaching approach is impressive and important. Sifu truly provides the foundation to be successful. Successful, not only with the technique and physical aspects of martial arts and life, but also with the philosophies and mindset of a successful life.

So, if you are looking for a martial arts academy, or to be more physically active or looking for mindset growth, look no further. You will be welcomed and well cared for with Kristine and Christopher at the Academy of Modern Martial Arts. Christopher and Kristine are a true blessing to have in your life.

We've joined almost a year ago. So thankful to have found the Academy of Modern Martial Arts. Our 15yo son is loving his classes there! Kristine & Christopher are wonderful coaches and humans. Hands down the cleanest facility I've ever been in. All the kids are kind and friendly. I highly recommend AMMA.

I have been coming here for almost 10 years now. This is not your average dojo. Sifu Chris and Sifu Kristine both care very much about every student and are personally invested in giving each of us the tools we need to become the best possible version of ourselves.
That intention is also encouraged in every student, which means we are all dedicated to helping our family, our friends, our community, and each other.
I have the utmost respect for this school and its owners and will be a student here for life.

This place is something special to the community of Lake Oswego. Sifu Christopher and Sifu Kristine create a welcoming environment where both children and adults learn not just martial arts, but also how to move through the world in a safe secure way. Classes for adults and children include teaching practical ways to move through life situations. Kickboxing classes are fun ways to not only move, but in their teaching they have created a special community. If considering a martial arts education, this is the place for you.

My son joined the place during the pandemic period for over a year now, he has not stopped the enthusiasm about learning at the center from Shifu Kristine. The communication from Chris is always impressive.

My son has attended this school for over 8 years. They provide excellent training in martial arts and development opportunities for the whole person. Additionally, they have always operated with a strong community focus that makes all feel welcomed and creates a safe space for their students. I am grateful for the positive impact AMMA continues to make in my child's life and I highly recommend them!

So far I've been great for our kids. During the pandemic it's been hard to find activities for children, and we were able to do a private lesson with groups of four. So the kids got to be with their friends, learn valuable skills and have a great time.

Strongly recommend Academy of Modern Martial Arts for both children and adults alike. The teachers and owners have my trust from years of witnessing their dedication and integrity. My very shy daughter came out of her shell and built some much needed confidence - so grateful! This business is a pillar of strength for the community and has been an inspiration to me and my family.

Not just another karate place where you learn to punch and kick ( although my kids like this very much). They take a whole body whole mind approach. Self awareness, focus and refocus, how to break out of holds ( stranger grabs them, how to get away),space awareness ( understand where you are, how far you can reach etc), work on balance, along with all the fun karate moves. I am very happy AMMA. My first son is 9 and have been going here since he was 5. My second son is almost 5 and started 1 year ago and likes it very much. I feel I am part of a community here. Highly recommend.

I have been training martial arts for the better part of 20 years, and this is hands down the best school I have ever trained at. Sifu Chris focus the lessons around sparing, not forms. Thus, students learn excellent control and safety, while getting to confidence that only the practicum of sparing can bring. There is also a very strong focus around State Management, or the mental component of martial arts. These skills don’t just make you a smarter fighter but allow you to find advantage in almost any situation life throws your way. If you have ever considered training in Martial Arts, this school is your first and last stop.

Have you ever taken a class that not only changes your body but also your perspective on life? There are so many truly great things to say about this school and the instructors. I started by enrolling my kid here, which was tricky due to scheduling difficulties. My partner and I spent the better part of a year looking for schools that would be willing to teach only on a weekend. It was impossible. Until a family member recommended this school, so nervously I called and there isn’t day I’m not glad I did. Our kid enjoys everything about this class- the energy burning activities, the attention of multiple teachers, the discipline and learning- everything! They even establish a common language that parents can use for consistency with their kids, which helps establish healthy boundaries the kids excel in! He enjoys it so much that I was curious to enroll as an adult.

So I did, and I was immediately welcomed into a great community of individuals! I continue to learn ways to trust my body, establish my goals, and receive support from people that went through the same journey. They value teaching at all levels there, even between different belt levels so higher belts can go back to the basics, which is helpful for everyone. Since everyone there has a chance to teach and learn, it is impossible not to find a partner that you can work well with- different learning styles are thought of highly here. It is hard to attend class and not have the great vibes and calming methods of handling a variety of situations permeate your every day living. Life lessons are in abundance, and you walk away more mindful and reflective than any other class I’ve taken. For people not interested in martial arts, they offer Tai Chi, fitness classes, Pilates, and the more intense MMA and grappling classes for men and women. It is really is the whole package and I would recommend this school to everyone. It is especially great to enroll as a family because you can grow together, which is irreplaceable, and chose the classes and participation levels that fit your goals. I would give this place ten stars if I could.

Our family considers Sifu’s Christopher and Kristine Boyer family! We’ve been part of the martial arts community for many years and can not imagine life without these amazing people! AMMA isn’t like any other martial arts school. There’s so much more than physically defending yourself that you learn at AMMA; incredible life skills for adults and children, respectful communication and consideration and so much more. We highly, highly recommend this martial arts school!

When my 5 year old daughter decided to try martial arts I was not sure where to start looking. I read countless reviews and descriptions of types of martial arts and schools that were more like cattle herders than one on one concentration. I came across AMMA online and decided to give it a try. Our first visit my daughter was greeted and welcomed and she fit right in. Since then I have noticed the attention to detail the staff and owners put into their school. Not only do they provide a high quality education but they provide a healthy and friendly fitness environment. Kids always look happy to be there and get a genuinely great experience learning from the instructors. My younger daughter just joined her sister in class and I love the one on one instruction they get in their semi private class. Also take note on how this isn't just another franchise trying to squeeze kids in ..this is a quality martial arts instruction. I am so excited for my kids to continue at AMMA.

My daughter has been coming to AMMA for several years, and the positive impact it has had on her is incredible. The teachers are so committed to helping their students feel confident, capable and comfortable in their own skin. It's a truly beautiful thing to see my daughter and all of the students growing and becoming stronger, more resilient, braver versions of themselves. Plus it's pretty darn cool seeing them develop amazing ninja moves at the same time! :-)

Our son, Sam Monroe, studied martial arts with Sifu Chris Boyer for over 10 years. Without a doubt, this was the most important investment we made in Sam's future. Sifu Chris was his teacher, mentor and life coach. Becoming a skilled martial artist strengthened Sam's confidence, focus and achievements in all aspects of his life. The AMMA experience and community were particularly valuable during his teen years. Instead of rebelling, Sam focused his energy on academics, sports and building strong friendships.
We love the expression -- "It takes a village to raise a child." AMMA is the heart of our village. Sifu Chris and Sifu Kristine continue to be very important people in Sam’s and our lives.

My son and I have been studying martial arts at AMMA since 2014. What was initially intended as a way for him to stay active and learn to defend himself, has become one of the most treasured experiences that the two of us share. We owe much of that to the folks at AMMA, who have created a complete kit for those interested in martial arts training: skills, philosophy and community. We are very happy to have found AMMA.

My boys started here just a few short weeks ago. Immediately, our whole family felt welcomed into the community! I was impressed with the professionalism of the owners as well as the philosophy they have chosen for their school. My boys loved everything about the classes from day one and we truly feel lucky to have found AMMA! I can't wait to see the influence AMMA has on my boys as they grow.

My son and I started studying with Christopher and Kristine at the Academy of Modern Martial Arts in Lake Oswego when he was 6. he's now 24 (we had a few breaks, including moving to TX for awhile). They teach life skills in addition to self-defense. These skills include clear communication, how to perform/communicate/deal with internal and external pressures and challenges, how to learn and how to work with and teach others. Christopher has taught at team-building events for the groups I manage at work. I highly recommend AMMA.

I have been training with Kristine and Chris for nearly 19 years. During that time I have gained and honed tools for managing my focus during stressful situations, which have been invaluable in my day to day and work life. Additionally, the great workouts are fun and engaging, and I have also made some fantastic friends. Whether your interest is just increasing your fitness, learning valuable state management skills, or shutting down your opponent's shoulder lock and securing a rear-naked choke of your own, AMMA has a class for you. Chris and Kristine are fantastic, and I cannot give a strong-enough endorsement!

I have been welcomed to the martial arts academy since I was very small, 3 and a half years old, being instructed by Kristine Boyer and Chris Boyer. Their academy has a educative environment and they teach me everything I need to know about what to do in situations where I am uncomfortable or in physical contact with someone who I don't want to be. They teach me proper stances, releases, and much more of how to confront myself, in class and out. They even teach other fighting modes for you to choose from. They feel like a family to me. If you are looking for a martial arts school, I with all my heart recommend Academy of Modern Martial Arts.

AMMA is much more than just a martial arts school. The instructors (mine is Christopher Boyer) demonstrate and instruct on the importance of mental state as the foundation of how we interact with the world - especially in high stress situations. Martial arts instruction and sparring is used as a laboratory to test and increase this ability while learning practical hands-on techniques; regardless of age. I can't say too many good things about AMMA - instructors and fellow students. These are genuine, grounded, and fun people to be around. Highly recommend!
