I love Begin, especially Emily and Kacie’s class. It’s about alignment and healthy muscle balance and NOT weight loss or purely aesthetic. A holistic way of loving our bodies

The "Yoga for the Inflexible Guy" class has been perfect for me. Danny is patient and runs the sessions without any pretense. This is a yoga inspired class that will help anyone improve their flexibility.
Whether you haven't stretched since your last high school gym class, or you currently maintain a daily exercise routine and just need some extra work to improve results, this class can help you.

As the pandemic was coming to safer place, I was looking for a place to do yoga. I'm a guy in my 50's...I can't do the positions that 25 year old women can and frankly those studios don't work for me. When I discovered "Yoga for the Inflexible Guy", I thought it was too good to be true. It's a safe space without body judgement and Danny leads us old dudes through poses and breathing that work for my body. It's not just good for my body, it's good for my soul. I feel rejuvenated after each class. And the bonus is discovering pilates here too. I've now had a few private pilates sessions (thanks Kacie!) and have taken a number of reformer classes as well. It's a great environment with instructors that cater to a small group setting and the needs of whomever is in the class. No posers, no preeners, no judgement. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Emily Jones at Begin Pilates has literally changed my life. She is so intuitive about the body and knows every detail of mechanics and can make the most minute adjustments that make all the difference. I've seen Emily through a hip replacement, back injuries, etc and she always exactly what to do. It's the best investment in m health ever!

Begin Pilates is a great studio - the teachers are all stellar and bring their own unique voice to their classes. All teachers are also especially good at providing modifications and keeping class flowing and fun while you get a great workout. I’ve been to many other studios in Portland and feel very at home here. (And, especially if you’re new to pilates try to get a class with Kacie Dart - she’s an absolute joy and one of the best teachers I’ve ever had!)

I take Morgan Goldberg's Gentle Yoga class. She guides us through a sequence that has enough that is gentle and enough that is challenging to be a wonderful weekly experience. She talks us through everything in a way that is both reassuring and precise. I continue to learn from her class and I recommend it to everyone.

Bones and Balance (B&B), is an excellent class. I am 68 years old and am quite fit. B&B keeps me toned and restores my energy. I know this because, I recently moved to Florida & took a break from classes for about a month. I noticed a change in my over-all fitness. I’m now back on track because, Begin Pilates offers on-line classes. Thanks to instructor/owner, Maria, I am able to maintain my fitness program while enjoying life here in Florida aboard my boat. No matter your level of fitness Maria, does a great job tailoring workouts to your age and/or ability. I guarantee you’ll enjoy and benefit from these classes, no matter where you are!

Great studio with excellent instructors. Highly recommend the Livestream Pilates All Levels Mat class. I’ve taken both Kira and Emily’s classes and appreciate their knowledge, style of class and variety.... always a great workout. Livestream has a cool feature that if the class time doesn’t work for you, you can sign up, opt out and receive a link to the recorded class that you can take within 72 hours.

I take several classes at Begin Palaties, at the studio and now virtually. Pajamalates is my favorite. I don’t get dressed, just turn back the bed covers and slowly wake up my body which has prepared me for the day.

The online Bones & Balance class at Begin Pilates is just what I need to keep my core in decent shape during the pandemic! Maria is an experienced Pilates instructor and she can expertly talk the participant through every move with clear details that we can understand. No matter what the skill level, Maria teaches to benefit one's whole body and well being.

Maria's Better Bones online class has been a great resource during the pandemic. Her class is organized, easy to follow and offers a great workout. I enjoy how she mixes things up so every class is a little different.

I have been taking the Inflexible Person class for a couple of years now. I am much more flexible now. I'm 59 BTW and my wife signed me up as a gift and a subtle nudge because I couldn't sit criss-crossed without groaning.
Danny is a great teacher. He welcomes new class members, and gears the class toward people that are inexperienced with yoga, so don't be intimidated. Danny offers different ways to do the poses to best suit your level and growth, and you only do what you are comfortably capable of doing.
It is also a fun group of participants that I look forward to seeing each week. I attend Mondays,
I started out going only on Mondays. I've since added Thursdays, and Saturdays to each week. Doing the class from home on Zoom is super convenient and accessible.

I can't speak to the pilates classes, but I've been taking the Yoga for the Inflexible Guy/Person classes for over a year now, and the Gentle Hatha class for about four months and really enjoy them. The instructors do a good job of accommodating people with different abilities (or lack thereof) without the feeling that they're "dumbing down" the classes or you're not doing "real yoga." The environment is supportive, and the instructors are kind and encouraging (although most of Danny's jokes are real groaners...).

I had never done yoga before bu had wanted to for a while. My hamstrings were so tight my doctor literally prescribed going to a yoga for seniors class (I'm in my mid-50's!). A friend referred my wife to the Yoga for the Inflexible Guy class at Begin Pilates (the title alone checked so many boxes for me). The class is exactly what I needed and Danny is a great instructor. Since the pandemic we have been doing online Zoom classes and he has not missed a beat. If you are looking to add yoga and mediation to your Covid quarantine, this is the place and the class.

The bright spot in my week during this pandemic is going to Pilates with our instructor Kacie. The space is very safe for this activity and great for my emotional and physical well being. I recommend it for anyone from first timers to experienced practitioners.

Maria Mankin's live streaming Zoom Bones & Balance classes are fantastic. She is very knowledgeable. Thanks to her I can stay fit and healthy (and sane) during these challenging times. She also records her classes and makes them available for a period of time, so I never have to miss a class!

I've been seeing Maria for Pilates sessions for a year. I'm thrilled with how much stronger I am compared to when I started. Maria's a wonderful, compassionate instructor and I can't imagine my life without her & Pilates now. UPDATE: Two years later and still seeing Maria at Begin Pilates. Can I have more than 5 stars to give???

I just celebrated my second anniversary of taking classes at Begin Pilates. At the age of 73, I definitely feel stronger with better balance and better flexibility. The trainers are kind, warm, and always attentive to each individual's needs, even in group sessions. They are knowledgeable and fun, for the young and old(er). Begin Pilates is a wonderful studio and I highly recommend it!

I love this studio! The instructors are fantastic and always check in to see how the class is feeling and if there are any movements we’d like to include in the class... the equipment is top notch, everything is very clean and comfortable... plus, the online scheduling is amazing for my busy schedule and finding time to fit a reformer session in around work and family! :)

I love this place! Maria Mankin knows her stuff. Taking the Reformer class at Begin is always a great start to my day. I also took private lessons with Emily who is a gifted Pilates practioner in her own right. I had frozen shoulder and still working on gaining my range of motion back - Pilates has really helped.

Danny is a great instructor. I really enjoyed his personal concern and respect for each person's process.
I'd recommend anyone with chronic pain issues, not just back pain, to take Danny's course. You will get a chance to adjust your perception of pain and learn some techniques to help deal with and reduce your pain. The class goal of giving each participant some useful tools to manage pain was clear and gradually unfolded, building on each week's lesson and homework assignment.
This was my first exposure to anything yoga. Danny was great at explaining the connections between our movements and breathing and our mindset.
It was clear from the beginning that I would get the most benefit by a consistent investment of about 10+ minutes of meditation per day. Therein, lies the rub. I was taking the class to help with back pain. The reason I have back pain is that I don't do my exercises. I still don't have the self-discipline needed, I still have back pain.
At the beginning of each class, each of us had an opportunity to describe our successes doing the homework. I could have happily skipped that part of the class. With only a few students, I couldn't hide in the back row. Danny always made it optional to participate, but I felt guilty either avoiding confession or confessing my failings.
I really enjoyed the guided movement portion of each class! The instruction was direct and easy and the individual attention was greatly appreciated. Danny really paid close attention so each of us could get the most benefit.
Danny suggested that I look into the weekly Wed. evening mat class offered by Begin Pilates. I have been going every other week and intend to go weekly as I can schedule it. The instructor is also really good. The class involves more movement and that is the ticket for me.

Yoga for the Inflexible Guy is a fantastic way to BEGIN limbering up. I have been attending this class for 7 months and have graduated from being completely Inflexible to just being inflexible. In addition, Danny (instructor) has a great sense of humor and the class is loads of fun while benefiting my body and mind.

The double whammy of Pilates and Yoga ramped up a new focus on health-centered activity. Maria and Danny are gentle task masters who keep individual motivation front and center while steady progress is being made that you can feel and see. The added bonus "Yoga for the Inflexible Guy" led by Danny Mankin is a tickle the funny bone' kind of guy whose humor during 'downward facing dog' poses has led to many howls of laughter. Why wouldn't you try this out and see what you are missing and could soon be part of? This is time well spent.

I've been attending Yoga for the Inflexible Guy for the last month at this studio for the last month and I'm hooked. The instructor and classmates have been very welcoming to someone who has never really done yoga before. I'm already feeling my body becoming more capable. After only a class or two I already had more awareness of how I'm carrying my body and I'm more present at home. This class makes me feel good while I do it, but then carries over into the evening and even the next day.

Flexibility has never been one of my strengths, but as I entered my 60's it has been the direct cause or a contributing factor to multiple injuries and pain. Unlike previous attempts at yoga, Yoga For The Inflexible Guy provides a comfortable, supportive atmosphere where, under Danny's tutelage, we work within our individual limits, developing our core strength and stretching muscle groups inherently tight in our gender.
Because I commute from Vancouver I can usually only attend one of the twice weekly classes. But the fact that I've missed only one week since I started in early May, speaks volumes.
Any male, regardless of age, should get acquainted with the principals taught in Yoga for the Inflexible Guy. It will probably be life changing.

I don’t know about anyone else but as I grow older and thus less flexible, I used to struggle in those physical activities that I enjoyed and in some cases, just had to give up. Yeah, I went to different types of Yoga classes, stretching classes and core strengthening classes, begrudgingly. Frankly felt intimidated and frustrated and this is coming from an old gym rat. I bought the dvd’s, etc. but, again being an old gym rat, working out alone is never been a motivator for me. Then I heard about “Yoga for The Inflexible Guy” at Begin Pilates and Yoga.
I started over three months ago, under the yoga instruction of Danny, with a small group of other guys just like me. I attend twice a week and it has made a HUGE difference in my flexibility, core strength and balance, to the point that I am doing things physically that I thought were no longer possible. It is a great workout and a lot of fun.
Danny is great! He keeps his classes small so that he can watch over each of his guys to provide care and encouragement to each of us in a group environment. I would give up a lot of things before I would give up my Tues and Thursday’s with Danny. What a difference it has made in my sense of well-being and physical confidence.
