Came here for the first time yesterday, along with my young kids that also hadn’t rock climbed before. So I can’t compare how this gym is in relation to other gyms but I can say that they have excellent staff. There was just one guy working, who was doing a stellar job at staying calm and rotating between helping tons of people (including my family who needed allll the info to get started). A couple employees showed up shortly after and they were also super friendly when I popped over to ask a question.

We were amazed at how big the gym was and how many areas we could test out. My kids ended up being shockingly good at climbing so apparently we’re going to become regulars!

Bend rock gym is one of the better rock gyms I have ever set foot in. Get your reps in. From weight training to yoga classes, there's something for everyone. They also offer lead climbing instruction.
And I believe the crack class. The sets have been good and challenging as of late. There is a decent selection of autobelays and lots of top pro and lead routes to get strong on. Don't miss the moon board or the tension board in the west boulder gym. Altogether, this is a pretty advanced training facility. As of Mon, June 9, they are offering 3 month special with no initiation fee!!!

Poor service and a weird β€œmembers only” bouldering gym. Went to the gym on a sleepy Sunday morning expecting to climb at the newer, more modern bouldering facility but was told that’s only for members and not people paying $22 day pass. They have an older bouldering area with old school walls but we wanted to climb in a more modern facility. I walked into the β€œmembers only” area and not a single person was in there climbing or training.

Really cool climbing gym but extremely soft grading for TR.

We climbed here while visiting from NY and were seriously impressed with the size of this gym. Unfortunately there was a large discrepancy in the 5.11 grading. One white 5.11 on the back wall climbed like a 5.8-5.9 warm up, and another yellow 5.11 climbed like a 5.10a or b, another red 5.11 climbed like a 5.10 as well. These weren’t just the only ones, there was a shocking amount of easy/non-technical 5.11s.

Looking past grades, the creativity when route setting is lost in some aspects. Most climbs did not require technical climbing knowledge or skill, for the *majority* of these climbs the only move was to simply reach up. Perhaps my local gym has us spoiled in this regard. I’m use to projecting all 5.11s in my gym. These 5.11s require you to become a contortionist with a great deal of balance. You need to plan your moves, precision, dead points, dynos, compression, flexibility & finger strength (it’s RARE you see any jugs on a 5.11 climb).
The difficulty did increase with the 5.12s -so perhaps those are the climbs that are more technical here? Not sure.

For me, half the fun of an intermediate climb set well is the very specific sequence, body movement with body tension required in order to send the climb.

I expected a gym being so close to an outdoor climbing area known to be stiff (similar to the Gunks) to have a more rigid grading structure. The 5.11s here were fun to climb but it was a shame that they didn’t feel like a choreographed dance on the wall.

It’s okay to make climbs more stiff and grade them in how they climb vs the intentional climb. Harder grades humble people and inspire people to push their limits. Anyway, hope this review wasn’t too harsh. Looking forward to taking laps here again.

Cool place. Designated parking outside with lines, and also an open lot. No overnight parking.
They have a lot of stuff inside: kitchen, showers, bathrooms, workout equipment.
You have to sign a waiver before climbing, and they can rent you gear.
To do Top Rope or Lead, you have to do a test and get a card for certification.
Kind staff and fun atmosphere.
The staff let me cut my pineapple up in the kitchen.

Be prepared to be invigorated! The wide variety of styles and difficulties, along with the attentiveness and creative thinking that goes into each route have challenged my stale way of climbing and improved my abilities waaaay beyond where they were just a few months ago. I can now climb so many more types of problems and have learned a ton of new moves. You can tell that all of the route setters put a ton of effort into making every route fresh and exciting. Even the easiest routes don’t default to β€œladder mode” so that beginners can be inspired about how their bodies can move and find the sense of accomplishment that comes with figuring out a route.

Source: Google

Alysa MacRae

β˜… 1

Not for beginners! The three main setters for the β€œeasy” routesβ€”Nate, Eva, and Cameronβ€”seem more preoccupied with out-teching each other rather than creating fun routes with good flow.
It used to be a fun place to climb, but now these new setters don’t care about a beginner experience.

The gym was amazing! The staff was friendly and the walls were good for all levels. My only complaint is that most of the tall walls were manual belays which you have to get a certificate for and pass a test, but I wasn’t staying in the area long so I couldn’t get it. But the auto belays were still enjoyable and challenging. The bathrooms were clean, and the atmosphere was energizing. Bouldering was really fun too! Highly recommend

Was visiting the area for the week and got to climb at this gym several times during my stay. Was a lot of fun! I was able to try around 30 different routes on autobelays and around 5 topropes. This gym is significantly softer than my home gym, which I actually really enjoyed because there were way more options for me. Was able to flash all but a few routes I tried, so it was nice to have enough climbs to maintain endurance while I was on vacation. Staff and climbers were friendly and clean facility. Never had to wait on any routes while I was there. I'd go when they open and I didn't have issues with families and kids hogging auto belays. Was a great time!

A fun spot for when it's pouring in Smith Rock or you only have a couple of hours to spare.

They have ropes and bouldering along with some training boards if you're into that.

We came for a drop-in while visiting Bend and enjoyed the bouldering and auto-belays. A quarter of the gym was closed due to route-setting but we didn't have issues finding problems to do. They have everything you could desire -- caves, slab, tall, short, vertical etc.

There's also tons of hang out areas so you can chill out if your friends still have some gas in the tank. Wifi is also available.

We found the staff really friendly and parking easy in the lot out front.

Went for the first time yesterday and was pleased with our experience. We’re a family of 5, all brand new to rock climbing, so we just opted for our kids to give it a try - they’re 6, 10 and 14. The staff were all super friendly and very helpful to get our kids up and climbing.

They have several options, from areas that require two people (one to belay), to areas that have auto-belays (great for newbies like us as well as folks climbing without a partner), and then they have boulder areas that folks can climb without clipping in, but JFYI it’s for folks 10+ unless you have adult supervision. They also had other little areas for various types of training/endurance, although I’m not sure what the technical terms are.

The only info that would have been helpful to have on the website is info about shoe/equipment rental - they do have shoes you can rent for $10 when you are buying a day pass, and they help fit you with the climbing harness. Rookie mistake we made was not buying chalk for the kids to use on their hands, so that’s something to look into as well if you’re new to this and don’t realize it’s needed.

This was a fun place to visit while visiting Bend. However, I was a little bit disappointed that the west gym is not open to day passers. The bouldering in the south gym is ok, but there wasn't a lot of variety. Definitely found myself wishing there were more interesting/innovative climbs.

Nice amount and variety of roped routes, and a fun bouldering gym. The staff are all perfectly nice and laidback. Facilities feel well taken care of, if not a little old.

Came from a gym that was newly renovated, had a massive exercise room, and free fitness classes for the same price as BRG, so I had pretty high expectations. The small workout room and $5/class yoga are slight bummers.

Appreciate that they’re always decorating for the holidays, and the Fright Night was an awesome event.

Bend Rock Gym is great. Plenty of bouldering space and autobelays. Their boulder routes are set and graded really well; interesting problems, and the V-scale ratings are comparable to those at gyms like Planet Granite and Boulderdash in larger cities. Whoever their setters are, they're doing good work. The staff are incredibly friendly, and the facility is quite clean. At $20 for a day pass with 15% off for students, the price is reasonable as well. 10/10 would recommend.

I'm a first time climber and went with my sister who goes often. The simplicity is very nice, just sign a waiver, grab some shoes and a harness and you're off to the races. There's a massive amount of walls to climb ranging from kids level to expert, with the expert levels being changed periodically to give experienced climbers new avenues to explore.

I stayed on the auto-belay walls that allow you to completely let go at any height and gracefully rappel to the ground. Each wall is marked with a difficulty and a corresponding color to follow up. For example, blue holds show a path going up on one wall while green shows another. Besides the main color holds there are much smaller, harder holds in case you want to challenge yourself on the way up by avoiding the main course and using alternate routes.

The whole facility is clean and well kept, with a very friendly staff to help you along the way.

I would have loved to stay longer but my arms were giving out...next time I hope to conquer more difficult climbs!

Great gym -- love the setting, friendly people. Seems like the youth programs are thriving, but maybe a little too much.... The only thing I'd change is more "adult swim" time/space. Yikes -- never thought I'd be that person. Maybe we could have two weeknights without kids camps? Or one or two areas to boulder without kiddos during camp time? Not sure what the best solution might be. Keep up the good work! Thanks!

BRG is a climbing gym for climbers. Between the ample bouldering, auto-belays, and climbing wall, there is plenty to keep your arms sore and skin raw for weeks on end. They are efficiently run and have a happy and helpful staff. In addition, the yoga and PILATES available make a great complement to anyone's climbing training. There are enough weights about you can get in a non-climbing based workout if you want it. There are also training walls and a cage for your movement and mobility training. It was a privilege to get to be a part of this community for even just a brief period of time.

This is a great facility. The expansion is top-notch and the route-setters are great. It's a fun place to take kids, as they have a dedicated "kids' area" with many auto-belays, but still challenging enough routes for adults. My only complaint is that I wish they offered childcare. Maybe just on the weekends and at peak times? I think the management has improved in the last 3 months.

I have brought teens here for several years with no problems. However I had a very unpleasant experience with the staff at the front desk that makes me not want to recommend them in the future.

When I ask if I could speak to a manager (or someone in charge) they said no. I asked if I could have a manger call me at at their convenience. They said they couldn't do that either. They would only give me the info@bendrockgym email address as any type of contact for further help. I can understand why they did not want me to talk with their boss. The customer service was abysmal and we left feeling disrespected.

I noticed that other reviewers were also treated rudely too. I guess is a an ongoing problem. This is first negative review I have ever posted about any business. That is how bad it is!

Everyone has always been friendly and they do a good job of keeping the routes fresh and with a range of difficulty!
